It's not a portrait on a piece of toast, but it's still pretty cool

Opening a fresh container of ice cream is always exciting. You get to see all the swirls and chocolate bits and cookie dough chunks (hopefully lots of them) all lying there waiting to be scooped up into your bowl. And sometimes you see something like the picture below.

This container of Turkey Hill French Vanilla Ice Cream was purchased by a customer last month, who then sent us this picture. No word on whether this happy half gallon will be sold for thousands on eBay or attract hoards of mystified and adoring fans, but as far as cultural icons go, the smiley face is right up there with the best of’em.

I think someone was a little too hungry for the ice cream and poked their fingers in it…….

  4. Sheila Lerner says:

It put a smile on my face, also.

  5. Nicole says:

It’s pretty cute – I’m not sure I could dig in without feeling a little guilty.

  6. Turkey Hill Team says:

Nicole, we felt the same way. But then, if you don’t eat it, what do you do with it?

The “phenomenon” that caused the smiling face is actually a result of air bubbles that get caught between the ice cream and the lid, but this is the first time we’ve seen it create something as identifiable as this.

If anyone else finds faces, landmarks, inspiring phrases or anything else bubbling up on the surface of their ice cream, send us a picture and we’ll try to post it on the Ice Cream Journal.

  7. Drew says:

I saw a TV show where they went to a Haagen-Dazs factory and the last step after putting the tops on was to flip the ice cream over, leaving an nice smooth surface when you open the container. I guess it can’t be perfect all the time.

My comment is not related to the face in the ice cream. Just wanted to take this opportunity to share my history with Turkey Hill Ice Cream. When I was a young teen, we lived close to a Turkey Hill Mini Mart and got our ice cream cones scooped up there on a pretty regular basis. My favorite was the chocolate chip. Do you still make that kind? About a year ago, I saw Turkey Hill ice cream in my local grocery store and was so excited because I remembered how good it was. But they never carry chocolate chip! They have mint chocolate chip, but I’m really hungry for the regular stuff. I’m going to ask the frozen foods manager to order it next time and see what happens. Thanks for the great product. I would also like to be entered into your contest for ice cream-related stuff. Sounds fun.

There’s nothing better than opening a new tub of ice cream and viewing the pristine surface, just beofre digging in! It’s like newly fallen snow…

  10. JK PSC CORP says:

    WICKED COOL!

  11. Ben says:

Ok, I opened it! It was pritty cool cuz it was on holloween night. I will say i did eat it and for a face it tasted pritty good!

  12. Betty Boop says:

I can vouch for the smiley face because it was my brother’s family who purchased the ice cream, and my sister-in-law almost didn’t want her family to eat it because she thought it was tampered with! Then she looked at the lid and realized it was a packing phenomenon. Pretty cool, indeed!

  13. T Hill Guru says:

that’s cool….good thinking on taking a pic…i’m not sure if i would have thought of it…

  14. Richard says:

Yeah, ya can’t beat the first scoop of ice cream out of the container
