NEW YEAR, NEW PRODUCT, NEW GIANT COW?

Posted by: Turkey Hill Team

cherryduetto_revised.jpgEvery now and then something entirely new comes along in the world of ice cream and we’re happy to share with you that Turkey Hill has developed one of those “entirely new” products.

It’s called Duetto, and technically it’s not even an ice cream (at least not in the traditional sense). To be more specific, Duetto is a combination of vanilla soft serve and swirls of smooth, scoopable Venice ice. It is in select stores now (and more stores later on) and available in mango, raspberry, lemon, and cherry flavors.

So what makes Duetto something entirely new? Well, until now no major ice cream manufacturer has been able to package a soft-serve easy-scoop ice cream and smooth, scoopable water ice product like ours. That’s because Turkey Hill has found a method and recipe to keep the composition of both treats scoopable and soft at normal freezer temperatures.

Although some of the details of the Duetto recipe and manufacturing process are a secret, we can tell you that it has taken us more than a year of trial and error to perfect the recipe we’re using today. That’s a lot of tasting and scientific “analysis” by our research & development team, but we know you’ll be pleased with the results.

In fact, we’re so proud of our new product, we’ve painted one of our Giant Cows to resemble Cherry Duetto’s signature red and white swirl. That cow was featured at the 91st Annual PA Farm Show earlier this month and our team gave away 23,000 samples of Duetto on the opening weekend ALONE. We’ll take that as a good sign of things to come!

TRICIA - Glad you like the Duetto. The softness of the soft serve and the Venice ice is due to our special recipe. Kudos to our R&D team for that!

As for the size of the container, some of our ice creams use ingredients or processes that cost a bit more. Instead of packaging the ice cream in the standard container and charging a bit more for it, we decided to make the package slightly smaller in order to keep the price down. We talked to many of our customers about both options and most agree that the second is better. In the end, we hope that the quality of the what’s inside is all that matters!

SUSAN - Glad you liked the Duetto. The amount of cherry or other Venice ice flavors might vary from container to container. As for packaging pure soft serve, we’ll keep that in mind for our next flavor development meeting. Thanks for the suggestion!

Susan wrote:

Finally got to taste this Duetto. One thing I have to comment on…there was way more cherry ice than ice cream. I had to get a box of vanilla to add to the cherry ice to finish the box off. I think you should make it half and half. It was absolutely delicious when I got the mix of ice and ice cream just right. You should make vanilla soft serve in a container all by itself,,and chocolate too. Now that would be heaven!!

Tricia wrote:

My husband and I picked up the cherry/vanilla Duetto at our local store to try it out since “1/2 gallons” were on sale AND we had a coupon (thanks Turkey Hill!). We can’t get over how soft and creamy the gelati-type soft-serve ice cream is.. paired with the soft cherry ice that is suprizingly not rock hard.. absolutely amazing! We do have a question, though — why are there only 1.5 quarts in a Duetto container compared to the 1.75 quarts in other Turkey Hill containers? Does it have anything to do with the flavor or the newness of a product? What ever happened to a true half-gallon (2 QT) container of ice cream??

Carla Perry wrote:

You must be the 1st to distribute soft serve ice cream….Definately an answer to weight loss as I can satisfy my thurst for ice cream at home….

doug wrote:

Is this anything like the Gelati? That was fabulous but our store doesn’t carry it anymore. Do you still make it and why can’t I find all the flavors in our local store? Can’t wait until we get the Duetto in our local grocery store. Sounds wonderful!

Sue wrote:

Hey, I only live in Newville which is only an hour and a half from Lancaster. Where is Duetto?? We need Duetto in our local store, Saylors Market. I keep checking and its not there yet. Please send them a bunch of flavors. Can’t wait to try it!!!!
Thanks!!

How does this compare to the Turkey Hill Gelati? I’ve been buying (and enjoying!) the Cherry Gelati here in Massachusetts for the last few months, long before ya’ll officially announced Duetto.

The complementary flavors and contrasting textures combine to make a really unique and delicious frozen dessert experience.

Kudos to Turkey Hill for another winner (though I really wish I could get more of your feature flavors up this way, I love that Coconut Cream Pie!)

JAVA & BARB - Thanks for your health-conscious suggestions. We’re always anxious to hear new ways to expand our low-carb or low-sugar lines.

KIM - Sorry you didn’t like the Cherry Duetto, but thank you very much for your comment. Hopefully the mango, raspberry or lemon Duetto flavors will suit you better. (Everyone seems to like the “exotic-ness” of the mango.)

AMANDA - Thanks for adding us to your blog list! We had talked about doing a blog for awhile and have been pleased with the reception it’s gotten so far.

NAT - If you’re living in Massachusetts, you might be in luck. Turkey Hill has already expanded into the Boston market, so depending on which part of the state you’re in, you might be able to find us!

PAMELA - As for Chicago, all we can say at this point is “definitely maybe.” Keep an eye on the blog for future updates about Turkey Hill’s Westward expansion.

JOAN - We’ll pass your suggestion for strawberry on to our research & development team. They meet on a regular basis to discuss new flavors and definitely take customer requests into consideration.

LEONA - Stay tuned to the Ice Cream Journal for updates about new flavors. This will be one of the first places we go to announce new products.

And to everyone else, thanks for your comments. We love hearing from so many fellow ice cream lovers!

As an ex-Philadelphian, through contact with east coast friends, they’ve told me how wonderful Turkey Hill ice cream is. I have never heard of it while living in Philly 30 years ago. I can’t believe all the wonderful flavors you have come up with! I now live outside of Chicago, Illinois, and would like to see some “specialty” stores, like Whole Foods, carry your ice cream!!!! Please, will you ever be able to distribute some of your wonderful frozen treats out here!!!! I’m tired of the same old big name ice cream products.

I ENJOY TURKEY HILL VERY MUCH. I BUY WHEN IT IS ON SALE AND BUY SEVERAL 1/2 GALLONS TO KEEP FOR FUTURE EATING. THE TROUBLE WITH THE LOCAL STORES, IS THAT THEY PUT A DIFFERENT BRAND ON SALE EACH WEEK, SO IF T/H OR BRY IS NOT ON SALE, I HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL. IT DROP AS MUCH AS A $1 TO $1.50. A BIG DIFFERENCE TO CONSIDER IN THESE TIMES. IT WOULD BE NICE TO RECEIVE COUPONS WHERE BUY ONE, GET ANOTHER FREE OR 1/2 PRICE. I GENERALLY BUY 2 1/2 GALLONS AT A TIME, AS MY WIFE ONLY LIKES VANILLA, WHERE I LIKE TO TRY VARIETY. REALLY LIKE THE CHERRY AND BUTTER PECAN.

Barbie Seiferd wrote:

We buy only Turkey Hill Icecream and have for quite a few years. None of the other manufacturers of Ice cream measure up. We have tried all of the flavors at one time or another but we have a few select favorites and Eagles Touchdown is one of them. My whole family is anxious to try your new soft serve,Duetto. At our house we all agree: If it’s not Turkey Hill, it’s not icecream.
