THE HISTORY OF NATIONAL ICE CREAM MONTH

Posted by: Turkey Hill Team

Well, on Sunday National Ice Cream Month will officially arrive, which means you can eat ice cream with reckless abandon throughout July (even more reckless abandon than usual) and you’ll have a good excuse for doing so. reagan-jelly-bean-portrait.gif

National Ice Cream Month is a relatively new “official” celebration, even though most people have been unofficially celebrating ice cream during the hot summer months for more than a century. It all started in 1984, when President Ronald Reagan declared July as National Ice Cream Month and the third Sunday in July as National Ice Cream Day. As many of you may remember, Reagan was famous for his love of jelly beans, so it makes perfect sense that he’d be the president to pay homage to ice cream. (At right is a portrait of the former president made from over 14,000 jelly beans.)

According to the International Dairy Foods Association (IFDA), Reagan signed the proclamation with the request that Americans celebrate ice cream throughout July with “appropriate ceremonies and activities.” We’re not sure what those ceremonies and activities might be, but hopefully they involve a scoop and a large bowl. Actually, who needs a bowl? During National Ice Cream Month, it’s okay to eat the ice cream right out of the container.

Marty Hey was/is a good friend who - many years ago - persuaded his Dad to give me a summer job at the Hey Brothers Ice Cream plant in Dixon, Illinois. I remember Marty showing me a photo of “actor” Ronald Reagan holding a Hey Brother’s popsicle during one of his return trips to Dixon. Marty’s dad always served Hey Brothers Ice Cream at grade school ice cream socials. Hey Brothers Ice Cream was unsurpassed in flavor and the plant was a great place for a high school kid to work.

My family was in the ice cream business in Illinois for over 80 years, closing operations in the early 1990s. We were based in Ronald Reagan’s, hometown in Dixon. I was on the Lee County Republican committee to elect Ronald “Dutch” Reagan into office. As a way of getting the public downtown on election night, we decied to make some “Dutch” chocolate ice cream to give away at the Republican in downtown Dixon where thousands were treated!

While growing up eating anything out of a container from the fridge was forbidden by my very proper Mom. In truth ice cream was an occasional treat because of cost, money was very tight. Fortunately, times change and cost is no longer an object. Mom now lives with us and to catch an 86 year old, 97 lb. women eating Turkey Hill Chocolate Peanut Butter ice cream from the container, while standing in front of the freezer, causes me to become hysterical with laughter. I pause only long enough to get another spoon & alert Diane my wife. Pretty soon it gets crowded in front of the fridge.

coldest time of the year, when we chopped the ice form the pond, got out the salt dish, always in its proper place in the summer kitchen, and started the slow, laborious process of making one container of home made

If it doesn’t make the cut this time, that doesn’t mean it won’t make it next time. Ice cream flavor trends are constantly changing and even though something like choco-coffee sounds unusual now, it might be the next big thing in 2008 or 2009.

My family are addicted to Turkey Hill Ice Cream and Frozen Yogurt - so much so - that we travel 60+ miles to purchase my favorite flavor of frozen yogurt on a monthly basis - Non-Fat Chocolate Marshmallow. Seems that the distributor for my local stores doesn’t offer this flavor on the order blanks. HELP!!

My husband is luckier - he likes the Chocolate Chip Light Ice Cream and is able to readily find it near home - “I should be so lucky!!” -

I did not know that President Reagan declared July as National Ice Cream Month 1984 and the third Sunday in July as National Ice Cream Day. Whoopee!!! I guess I will have to make sure we have some Turkey Hill that day to celebrate!
We recently tried the new “Lemon Duetto” and really enjoyed it!!!

I didn’t know Turkey’s made Ice Cream!! Just kidding, it is the best. What I would like to see is coconut or toasted coconut in Ice Cream. Cherry coconut, Orange coconut, butterscotch toasted coconut, turkey bone vanilla. I could go on and on. There used to be a butterscotch-nut candy called chicken bones that could be used.
We love Turkey Hill Ice Cream, vanilla is the favorite. You can do so much with it. Like make smoothies, sundaes etc. Use the last banana that is getting too ripe, make a chocolate or butterscotch with soda crackers sundae.
No need to overdo it with other additives, just lots of ice cream.

We used to “hijack” your trucks for Party Cake because the store nearby didn’t carry it, then it was gone altogether, but thanks to heavy boycotting, it’s back! The strange thing is, at first we wondered what the big deal was, but as we worked our way through the first half gallon over several days, the extraordinariness of the texture and flavor revitalized our receptors, so we’re “hooked” again. Why have ice cream cake when you can have cake ice cream?

I am not going to be shy, I LOVE TURKEY HILL ICE CREAM! A few years ago I found Turkey Hill in the grocery store and bought 4 1/2 gallons. My husband thought I was out of my mind. You see I am from Lancaster County and have moved away for years. I gave up hope of ever finding it again, so I was so excited when I found it. He now loves it too. There always is Turkey Hill ice cream in our freezer, when I see it on sale, I buy extra. Thank you for coming to northwestern PA. I must mention, when my daughter was young, we use to go the Turkey Hill store in Ephrata, Pa. for ice cream cones….Now that is a memory….

WOW, WHERE DO WE START? We’re reading and enjoying all of your comments, but we’ll try to address a few here:

MARY - It’s good that you request flavors from your grocery store freezer manager. They really do value customer input.

TOM - Chaos and darkness without ice cream? We couldn’t imagine life without it either.

MARY ANNE - It’s funny to hear about your daughter eating the strawberry out of the neopolitan ice cream. She’s definitely not alone!

DONALD - Your story of love and chocolate ice cream is great! It sounds like a scene from a movie. It’s touching to know that our ice cream can help bring two people closer together (and that you’re willing to run out in the soaking rain for it).

JAY - You poetry skills are enviable. I think that’s the first rhyming comment anyong has every left on the Ice Cream Journal. Thanks!

Last night it came to my attention from my wife Muriel that we had no Turkey Hill Ice Cream. It was pouring rain, but I knew that our love for each other and for Ice Cream could not go un recognized. I went to my local A&P, got thoroughly soaked in the rain. Ran down the Ice Cream Isle noticing along the way lost of full cases of various brands of ice cream. Arriving at the Turkey Hill section, much to my total amazement there were two containers of Turkey Hill Dutch Chocolate. No more of any other flavors. Standing there dripping from the rain and wondering why, it came to me clearly in a flash. “More people love Turkey Hill than any of the other brands”. Upon checking out with the last two remaining containers of Dutch Chocolate, I happend to notice a few other soaking wet men holding desperatley on to there Turkey Hill conatiners. Isn’t love grand.

Your low fat/low calorie and combos of soft service and sherbert are fantastic for special diets.

Stephen, you’ll be happy to know that we asked our own expert, Ernie, a very similar question not too long ago (he’s Turkey Hill’s official ice cream taster, among other duties).

Ernie says it’s mostly a matter of preference, but he like likes to let his sit for a few minutes prior to eating. This raises the temperature a bit, which helps bring out the various flavors.

Personally, I’m with you and Butter Brickle Fan…if I’ve got ice cream in my bowl and a spoon in my hand, there’s no way I can let it sit there untouched.

GOOD QUESTION STEPHEN…sometimes I let my ice cream sit on the table for a few minutes to get soft and other times I just dig right in. I know sherbert is best when it’s more frozen. If it melts it gets too watery. I’d have to say I like my ice cream harder. That way I can take my time eating it and by the time I’m at the end, it’s nice and soft.
