THE HISTORY OF NATIONAL ICE CREAM MONTH
Posted by: Turkey Hill Team
Well, on Sunday National Ice Cream Month will officially arrive, which means you can eat ice cream with reckless abandon throughout July (even more reckless abandon than usual) and you’ll have a good excuse for doing so.
National Ice Cream Month is a relatively new “official” celebration, even though most people have been unofficially celebrating ice cream during the hot summer months for more than a century. It all started in 1984, when President Ronald Reagan declared July as National Ice Cream Month and the third Sunday in July as National Ice Cream Day. As many of you may remember, Reagan was famous for his love of jelly beans, so it makes perfect sense that he’d be the president to pay homage to ice cream. (At right is a portrait of the former president made from over 14,000 jelly beans.)
According to the International Dairy Foods Association (IFDA), Reagan signed the proclamation with the request that Americans celebrate ice cream throughout July with “appropriate ceremonies and activities.” We’re not sure what those ceremonies and activities might be, but hopefully they involve a scoop and a large bowl. Actually, who needs a bowl? During National Ice Cream Month, it’s okay to eat the ice cream right out of the container.

Marty Hey was/is a good friend who - many years ago - persuaded his Dad to give me a summer job at the Hey Brothers Ice Cream plant in Dixon, Illinois. I remember Marty showing me a photo of “actor” Ronald Reagan holding a Hey Brother’s popsicle during one of his return trips to Dixon. Marty’s dad always served Hey Brothers Ice Cream at grade school ice cream socials. Hey Brothers Ice Cream was unsurpassed in flavor and the plant was a great place for a high school kid to work.
August 28th, 2007 at 10:02 pmMy family was in the ice cream business in Illinois for over 80 years, closing operations in the early 1990s. We were based in Ronald Reagan’s, hometown in Dixon. I was on the Lee County Republican committee to elect Ronald “Dutch” Reagan into office. As a way of getting the public downtown on election night, we decied to make some “Dutch” chocolate ice cream to give away at the Republican in downtown Dixon where thousands were treated!
August 2nd, 2007 at 1:12 amlOVE YOUR ICE CREAM. WE WISH THERE WAS A TURKEY HILL TRUCK THAT CAME BY EACH NIGHT INSTEAD OF MR. SOFTEE.
July 9th, 2007 at 7:13 pmWe just tried the lemon Duette and it seems as though this flavor can be turned into an elegant dessert. Does anyone have any recipe ideas?????

Happy Ice Cream Month! I, myself, however think of every month as ice cream month, and every day as ice cream day. I never need an excuse to eat my favorite food. And speaking of favorites, I absolutely LOVE Turkey Hill’s lemon meringue pie - wish it was around all year and not just a special flavor.
July 4th, 2007 at 4:59 pmHAPPY 4TH EVERYBODY…WHAT A GREAT WAY TO CELEBRATE…..WITH ICE CREAM!!!!!!
July 4th, 2007 at 12:43 pmAmericans certainly love their ice cream. Therefore,it is fitting that our nation has a National Ice Cream Month.Ice cream on a hot summer day is a great treat. It is so American.
July 3rd, 2007 at 6:50 pmWhile growing up eating anything out of a container from the fridge was forbidden by my very proper Mom. In truth ice cream was an occasional treat because of cost, money was very tight. Fortunately, times change and cost is no longer an object. Mom now lives with us and to catch an 86 year old, 97 lb. women eating Turkey Hill Chocolate Peanut Butter ice cream from the container, while standing in front of the freezer, causes me to become hysterical with laughter. I pause only long enough to get another spoon & alert Diane my wife. Pretty soon it gets crowded in front of the fridge.
July 3rd, 2007 at 10:29 amI LOVE your ice cream. Every flavor is great! I have a bowl around 8pm every night.. My two dogs watch patiently because they know that they will get the last two bites. They give Turkey Hill their official puppy paw of approval.
July 2nd, 2007 at 9:37 pmIce Cream is cool. Get it.
July 2nd, 2007 at 5:41 pmI remember making ice cream with the hand crank machines. All the grand-children had to take a turn on the crank if they wanted ice cream. It was hard when little. The electric machines were easier but still a lot of work. Turkey Hill ice cream tastes almost as good, and comes in flavor combinations I never would have thought of.
July 2nd, 2007 at 5:38 pmI agree with coupons, coupons coupons. Or at least more frequent special pricing.
July 2nd, 2007 at 2:02 pmWe just love Turkey Hill! Even though I have to eat just the sugar free flavors now I will still enjoy my Turkey Hill Every Day!!!
July 2nd, 2007 at 1:50 pmIt’s great to know that there is a national ice cream month — even though I don’t need one for a reason to buy and enjoy Turkey Hill Ice Cream!!!! I just love Turkey Hill! Even though I can only enjoy the sugar free flavors now I will still enjoy having my Turkey Hill every day!
July 2nd, 2007 at 1:47 pmTurkey Hill makes the best ice cream.
July 2nd, 2007 at 12:54 pmThere’s a great special on it this week at Giant Food Stores. Go get it!
My son and I go crazy for chocolate chip mint and rocky road,we finish a 1/2 gallon while watching an old movie. We were in Lancaster Pa., stopped to eat lunch, which was Turkey Hill Ice Cream, best lunch ever!!!
July 2nd, 2007 at 10:29 amA favorite relaxation technique of mine is sitting on the backyard swing indulging in a sweet treat, Turkey Hill ice cream of course!
July 2nd, 2007 at 9:20 amIce cream, an all time favorite. I remember growing up the many hours we would sit churning to get that great smooth dip of ice cream. Thanks to Turkey Hill I don’t have to churn anymore. I love your flavors and the taste, it is so creamy.
July 2nd, 2007 at 8:58 amI am glad that we have a National Ice Cream Month! Now we can celebrate with Turkey Hill ice cream!!
July 2nd, 2007 at 1:01 amMy son Chase would like to breathe in Turkey Hill Mint Chocolate Chip ice cream. I am positive that this 10 year old adorable little boy is made up of 75% mint chocolate chip ice cream….and only Turkey Hill brand. It is just his good fortune that he is on the thin side. He gets his calcium via Turkey Hill.
July 1st, 2007 at 11:44 pmI LOVE ICE CREAM…. I SCREAM, YOU SCREAM, WE ALL SCREAM FOR ICE CREAM… IT IS MY FAVORITE DESSERT.. AND SNACK…
July 1st, 2007 at 10:13 pmThanks to President Reagan for making July National Ice Cream month! Thanks to Turkey Hill for making so many awesome flavors. But how can you let a week go by without having ice cream? It’s just not normal!
July 1st, 2007 at 1:13 pmI was enjoying my bowl of ice cream and remembering “the good ole days” of childhood pleasures. Then when I saw the photo of the actor/President Raygun I lost my appetite. He like the current twit in the White House couldn’t be trusted to bring any happiness to anyone unlike a good bowl of ice cream. Please leave out reactionary conservatives from your ads in the future.
July 1st, 2007 at 12:20 pmAny time, any day, any month is a great time for Turkey Hill ice cream. But since President Reagan had a jelly bean portrait, isn’t it time for a Bust of him made in ice scream.
July 1st, 2007 at 8:51 amWhy did the half-gallon carton get down-sized to only 1.75 quarts, without any corresponding reduction in price?
July 1st, 2007 at 8:06 amHappy Ice Cream Month to all!
Remember, it has to have chocolate in it to count!
Favorite quote: Never eat more ice cream than you can lift.
July 1st, 2007 at 7:33 amWe love ice cream! We usually eat it at least once a week even during the winter when it is cold and snowing.
July 1st, 2007 at 12:23 amAny month and any day is godd for eating Ice Cream, especially Turkey Hill. As for National Ice Cream Month/Day, another great move by a great President.
July 1st, 2007 at 12:02 amMy husband and I have ice cream every night while watching our favorite TV shows/movies. We love all your many flavors.
June 30th, 2007 at 11:40 pmI think we should celebrate ice-cream everyday.
June 30th, 2007 at 10:11 pmI love pistachios in my mint ice cream. The crunch helps in the overall enjoyment of eating this cold dessert every single time. A close second is the taste of fresh strawberries in a vanilla based ice cream cone.
June 30th, 2007 at 10:05 pmWe LOVE Pennsylvania AND Turkey Hill, right down to the convenient cartons. My favorites are Chocolate Chip and just about anything with nuts. My husband is a strawberry fan. And topped with the fresh strawberries that we’ve been picking, French Vanilla is a winner.
June 30th, 2007 at 9:53 pmI Love your Turkey Hill Mint Chocolate Chip I had Turkey Hill Banana at my friends house but have never seen it again and I really loved that one.
June 30th, 2007 at 8:17 pmwho needs a special day for ice cream?
June 30th, 2007 at 8:11 pmmy dad lived to 96 years old and ice cream was a part of his daily diet forever!
Turkey Hill is the creamiest, not the creamaiest. Sorry for my spelling.
June 30th, 2007 at 8:10 pmTurkey Hill is by far the creamaiest ice cream.
June 30th, 2007 at 8:08 pmI scream -
You scream -
We all scream for ice cream!
I think that just about sums it up for me. Ice cream is by far my favorite treat!!!
June 30th, 2007 at 7:54 pmLove vanilla, reminds me of when I was a little girl and my mother took me to the five & dime and bought me a double cone of vanilla. Always brings back that sweet memory of being with my mother.
June 30th, 2007 at 6:56 pmThere’s nothing like a great ice cream cone on a hot summer day!! The boat harbor near my house just started serving Turkey Hill ice cream, and boy, does it make a difference!!!! I look forward to it every time I head down there now.
June 30th, 2007 at 6:32 pmlove turkey hill ice cream
June 30th, 2007 at 4:32 pmEating ice cream is a wonderful way to have a holiday any day.
June 30th, 2007 at 4:22 pmMy wife and I have Turkey Hill every night.
June 30th, 2007 at 9:49 amWe love it!
Appropriate ceremonies and activities? Hmm, that sounds like the best kind of challenge!
I love Linda Haynes’ father’s method of cutting the carton in half and enjoying half on Friday and the other on Saturday. What a wonderful indulgence.
My son enjoys having an ice cream buffet - we put out as many toppings as possible, scoop some ice cream into a bowl and get crazy. He loves when some of the neighborhood kids join us, for an old-fashioned ice cream social.
June 30th, 2007 at 9:23 ami won a free 1/2 gallon of turkey hill playing the pinata game and have been hooked ever since..THANKS
June 30th, 2007 at 9:22 amMy husband and I will be married 54 years on July 11. We will celabrate with Turkey Hill ice cream. But then again we have spent most of our 54 years eating ice cream every evening shortly after dinner. Once we found and tasted Turkey Hill there was no other for us. Our biggest decision is what flavor. We love them all but really like it when we find the Philly Eagles ice cream in the case. Keep up the good work.
June 30th, 2007 at 9:18 amI too am an ice cream aficionado. I have passed that on to my children and now my granddaughter! Ice cream evokes wonderful lifetime memories for me. I need more than a blog space to list them all. I must say, nothing compares to my hand dipped cone of “Original Recipe Choco Mint Chip Premium” on any given day. Sadly, I have developed a lactose intolerance, but with the help of “dairy aid” medicine, I can still enjoy my daily taste of “Choco Mint Chip” Nothing will stop that!
June 30th, 2007 at 9:17 amLet the fireworks begin.
June 30th, 2007 at 9:05 amHappy ice cream month celebration to all!
Turkey Hill ice cream is a time for celebration.
I like all flavors.
My family is Italian; I believe gelato runs in our veins. My grandparents used to make their own ice cream on weekends in the summer months and for special occasions. Ice cream is the most dynamic sweet- there are endless possibilities; it’s impossible to get bored. One bowl of ice cream reminds me of all that is good in the world.
My husband, son and I love Turkey Hill products. The Diet Green Tea and ice cream (ANY flavor, they look forward to finding out which flavor will be in the freezer this week) are staples in our house. In addition we feel good supporting a local, family owned business that truly cares about customers.
Thanks to Turkey Hill, the late President Reagan and dairy cows everywhere!
I scream, you scream…
June 30th, 2007 at 8:59 amI think everyday should be ice cream day!!! I enjoy a bowl of ice cream, or 2, a day.
June 30th, 2007 at 8:54 amIt wouldn’t be summer without Turkey Hill ice cream! You guys are truly the best. I am never without a carton of Neopolitan ice cream in my freezer!

June 30th, 2007 at 8:30 amI have always loved ice cream. Turkey Hill ice cream is always creamy and delicious. I look forward to trying the new flavors - even though vanilla is my favorite!
June 30th, 2007 at 8:25 amSeasonal special flavors should be around longer.
June 30th, 2007 at 8:04 amJust when you realize they are there they disappear.
(Or perhaps send out announcements so we know they are coming!!) Please!!!
I’ve recently discovered your black rasberry flavor and it really brings me back to my childhood. Thanks so much!
June 30th, 2007 at 7:05 amWe LOVE icecream….summer favorites?….any flavor in a cone! Why not a jelly bean flavor!!! That would be great!!
June 30th, 2007 at 7:00 amMe and my family has been eating Turkey Hill ice cream for years! After dinner every day, me and the kids pull out the banana split ice cream out of the freezer or the double decker ice cream sandwiches to enjoy. Every month is ice cream month at our house! We love Turkey Hill ice cream!
June 30th, 2007 at 6:58 amWe love Turkey Hill Ice Cream, we have it throughout the year, at home and away from home, at the Harborfest and State Fair, etc. It is a great treat for any celebration.
June 30th, 2007 at 6:41 amWhat a wonderful reminder that it is OKAY not to feel guilty about eating out of the container
Turkey Hill has been and always will be a favorite in this house, so rich and creamy…Thanks TH Crew !!
June 30th, 2007 at 5:25 amI LOVE Turtkey Hill ice cream! Strawberries and Cream is my favorite. And ice cream is on my dish all year long!
June 30th, 2007 at 4:21 amWe love Turkey Hill. So rich and creamy especially the Black Raspberry. Of course my daughter Kaylie would argue that the Mint Chocolate Chip is the best. At 8 years old she is the expert since she eats more ice cream than anyone I know.
June 30th, 2007 at 1:27 amMy husband loves the Dutch Chocolate so much that I can hardly buy it fast enough!
June 30th, 2007 at 12:56 amI had no idea that there was an official “Ice Cream Month” or “Ice Cream Day” for that matter. I like to let the ice cream sit out and melt a little. Then I take a spoon and slowly eat the melted parts. Unfortunately I have been known to eat the whole container of Turkey Hill ice cream at one sitting. It is hard to stop scooping that wonderful treat!
June 30th, 2007 at 12:17 amI just have to share this! A few months ago, my daughter wanted Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, although it didnt sound all that yummy to me, I got it anyway! One night I wanted some ice cream and all we had was the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. Well, I thought what the heck, I may as well try and see if it is as good as what my daughter says. Well, mmmm yummy yummy. Ever since, that is now my favorite! Always looking to find as many dough pieces as I can without making look like I was diggin thru the trash! LOL! Oh and I am hooked on Turkey Hill Ice Tea too! You will always find some in my fridge!
June 30th, 2007 at 12:16 amRegan was wonderful he: He recognized ice cream as a fun and nutritious food that is enjoyed by a full 90% of the nation’s population. Now if we could just get the other 10% to realize what they were missing!
June 29th, 2007 at 11:46 pmI love Turkey Hill, I think it’s the best one out there. One town over from me there used to be a little ice cream stand that you could drive through. It was a treat when it was open in the summer, but when it was closed, Turkey Hill was the year round favorite in our family. I turned my sister on to Turkey Hill about five years ago and she says its the only brand she will buy now. Celebrate Ice Cream this month as our favorite dessert, but in our family we celebate ice cream everyday!!!!!
June 29th, 2007 at 11:15 pmMy husband and I love the turkey hill ice cream flavors, especially the original and homade vanilla. It’s so creamy and melts in your mouth. Keep coming up with new flavors since I like to mix and match my flavors. Thanks again Turkey Hill.
June 29th, 2007 at 11:11 pmHello to all the ice cream fans!!!
June 29th, 2007 at 11:03 pmI just want to thank turkey hill for ice cream, Some of my fondest memories of my family are based upon ice cream. We would always have ice cream with our celebrations.
Now we can celebrate ice cream in July.
ENJOY !!
I love ice cream!!!! There is nothing more comforting then that first spoonful milky, creamy delight.
June 29th, 2007 at 10:55 pmAlmost every flavor is my favorite. I love them all. I always have at least 4 different flavors in my freezer. The new Duettes are great and low in calories too.
June 29th, 2007 at 10:40 pmTurkey Hill is the best ice cream ever made. My dear mother and father who are no longer with us used to make it a special occasion after dinner to have our favorite flavors. My favorites are Choco Mint Chip and Black Raspberry Premium….reminds me of my childhood days.
A famous quote about ice cream I always remembered my dad who loved Mint Chip used to say was: “I don’t cry over spilt milk, but a fallen scoop of ice cream is enough to ruin my whole day. ~Terri Guillemets”….and Turkey Hill Ice Cream is ‘happiness condensed.’ I believe it - Lancaster, PA is beautiful and so is Turkey Hill ice cream.
June 29th, 2007 at 7:04 pmmy husband loves your chocolate chip.iloveyour peanutbutter cup. we just love your product
June 29th, 2007 at 6:59 pmhey whos linda haynes?

June 29th, 2007 at 6:56 pmI love ice cream already but now that I know that there is an official month for it watch out i’m gonna go crazy lol
June 29th, 2007 at 6:55 pmWhen I sit down to eat a bowl of ice cream, I always recall my dad (now deceased) walking to the corner drugstore every Friday night and buying a half gallon of ice cream. He would cut the box in half and eat one half Friday evening and the other half on Saturday night while watching his favorite TV shows in our club basement. I especially enjoy eating it during the summer on hot, humid days. It’s so refreshing. The new Duetto has become a favorite of mine, and I’m spreading the word about how great it is. Also, I think Turkey Hill would be a great place to work!!!
June 29th, 2007 at 6:54 pmI was just putting ice cream on a list to purchase for this weekend and walked by to check my email. Seeing your blog invitation was perfect timing. I need not write on my list, “Turkey Hill), because it is the only one I bring homer from the supermarket.
June 29th, 2007 at 6:51 pmi love your ice cream. it is the best ever, my favorite is cookies and cream
it tastes so good! i think since its ice cream month you should make a new flavor, i think you should make jelly bean ice cream in honor of ronald regan.
June 29th, 2007 at 6:51 pmI was just putting ice cream on a list to purchase for this weekend and walked by to check my email. Seeing your blog invitation was perfect timing. I need not write on my list, “Turkey Hill), because it is the only one I bring homer from the supermarket
June 29th, 2007 at 6:50 pmWe remember the days of youth, at the
coldest time of the year, when we chopped the ice form the pond, got out the salt dish, always in its proper place in the summer kitchen, and started the slow, laborious process of making one container of home made
vanilla flavored Ice cream.
Everyone took turns, was tired, and slowly ate the wonderful delicacy as it was scopped out with the wooden handle scoop.
Now Turkey Hill makes all these creamy flavors in so many delicious, rich and creamy delites that we can have this desert all year round! Bravo!!!
June 29th, 2007 at 6:45 pmIn honor of the late President Reagan, why don’t you create an ice cream that has jelly beans in it? How about vanilla ice cream, chopped jelly beans and little candied American flags? That would be delicious! Thanks! Happy 4th of July!
June 29th, 2007 at 6:41 pmI just love Turkey Hill, so many flavors, so many calories. “I just love them all the gweieieie the bettttteeerrr!!”"
June 29th, 2007 at 6:37 pmNancy
I love Turkey Hill light ice cream. The raspberry chunk is so delicious. Keep those flavors coming!
June 29th, 2007 at 6:33 pmI LOVE Turkey Hill ice-cream! It’s the only kind I buy. I’ve tried everything else and Turkey Hill is the creamiest, tastiest and best around. Love Tin Roof Sundae and Moose Tracks!! At any given time there are at least 2 half gallons in my fridge. Wonderful!! Thank you.
June 29th, 2007 at 6:26 pmIce cream any flavor any month of the year!

June 29th, 2007 at 6:03 pmI love Turkey Hill Ice Cream. This is the only brand I purchase. I love many different flavors and I also enjoy trying the special editions. I cannot wait for the next new flavor.
June 29th, 2007 at 5:55 pmWhat wasn’t to like about Reagan? Not many presidents would stop to take note of such an indulgent delight as ice cream!
June 29th, 2007 at 5:52 pmWhat can I say about Turkey Hill Ice
June 29th, 2007 at 5:51 pmCreams….Just that out of all the brands out there I still only put Turkey Hill in my shopping cart every
week! When it comes to taste you can’t
beat Turkey Hill Ice Cream. It reminds
me of when I was a kid and we go to the
dairy and get homemade ice cream. Thanks for the memories!
Turkey Hill has a flavor to suit every mood — whether I’m upbeat and chocolate-chipping it, or down in the dumps and need my mood soothed with a good dollop of chocolate, I know exactly where to turn. Thank goodness for freezers and Turkey Hill to fill them!
June 29th, 2007 at 5:51 pmGo Chocolate Marshmallow and Cookie Dough….pick me pick me pick me
June 29th, 2007 at 5:39 pmI am currently 7 1/2 months pregnant with my 1st child. Although I have ALWAYS loved Turkey Hill ice cream and ate it at least on a weekly basis, I am now eating it daily (shh..don’t tell my Dr.)!!!! My all time favorite is Rocky Road. I could eat a gallon a day! Thanks Turkey Hill for the best Rocky Road ice cream ever made! I have no doubt that “Junior” will enjoy it as much as I do.
June 29th, 2007 at 5:24 pmHi,
I love your ice cream but hope you might consider doing some sorbets (whole fruit sorbet, like strawberry).
Beth
June 29th, 2007 at 5:24 pmOur family loves Turkey Hill ice cream, it’s so fresh! It never lasts long since all of the kids in the neighborhood tend to stop by for a sundae! That’s what summer’s all about; well, winter too! Happy 4th of July America!
June 29th, 2007 at 5:23 pmDid you ever mix chocolate and butter pecan in the same bowl? Turkey hill makes it really GREAT!
June 29th, 2007 at 5:22 pmToday is sort of my 50th anniversary so I am celebrating with the mixture
Turkey Hill chocolate ice cream is my family’s favorite.
June 29th, 2007 at 5:08 pmI wish every grocery store carried EVERY flavor of Turkey Hill!
June 29th, 2007 at 5:06 pmICE CREAM ……. hmmm good!
June 29th, 2007 at 4:58 pmWe love rocky road and Eagles Touchdown the best
June 29th, 2007 at 4:53 pmEven though I can only eat sugar-free Ice Cream, my family loves all the flavors of the months.Their favorite one is the phillies gram-slam,also cookie dough, and mint-chocolate chip.
June 29th, 2007 at 4:52 pmwe love the pretel ice cream and are looking for a peach ice cream
June 29th, 2007 at 4:40 pmMY HUSBAND AND I JUST LOVE YOUR CHOCOLATE CHERRY CORDIAL BUT OUR STORE DOESN’T HAVE IT ALL THE TIME. CAN YOU TELL ME WHY? YOUR PRODUCT IS FANTASTIC YOU PROVIDES US WITH AN OLD TIME TREAT WITH OLD TIME QAULITY KEEP IT COMING.
June 29th, 2007 at 4:34 pmAnother good reason why President Ronald Reagan was one of the best presidents!!
My favorite ice cream is the yummy Turkey Hill Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough!! I could eat the whole 1/2 gallon at once, lol.
June 29th, 2007 at 4:28 pmSince discovering Turkey Hill, it’s all I’ll buy because everything about it and in it is truly good enough to be celebrated, but it was good of Pres. Reagan to make the official celebration during the month when we’re the most active…gotta watch those waistlines.
June 29th, 2007 at 4:18 pmTurkey Hill has so many flavors it is always hard to choose. There is always room for ice cream.
June 29th, 2007 at 4:17 pmHello Turkey Hill, There are many Turkey Hill flavors I enjoy but if I were to name a favorite,it would be chocolate chip cookie dough.I love Jana’s cookie dough.I do a lot of bike riding in the summer and Turkey Hill ice cream gives me a lot of energy for those long rides.
June 29th, 2007 at 4:13 pmEven if President Reagan didn’t make July national ice cream month I would still eat ice cream very often during the month. Turkey Hill makes amazing flavors especially their limited editons.
June 29th, 2007 at 4:02 pmWhen it comes to Turkey Hill ice cream, I am like Will Rogers, “I never met a flavor I didn’t like”
June 29th, 2007 at 3:19 pmRUTH - About your suggestion for a root beer float flavor…not to let the cat out of the bag, but you might be in luck in the next year or so.
MICHELLE - A chocolate and coffee flavor. That sounds interesting. We’ll pass that on to our development team. And don’t worry. If it doesn’t make the cut this time, that doesn’t mean it won’t make it next time. Ice cream flavor trends are constantly changing and even though something like choco-coffee sounds unusual now, it might be the next big thing in 2008 or 2009.
RICHARD - No problem on the permission to eat ice cream straight out of the container. As for drinking OJ straight out of the carton, you’re on your own with that one.
June 29th, 2007 at 3:16 pmI don’t need a special holiday for eating ice cream either! It has become part of my daily diet. What makes it perfect for me is the ingredients. I was a Breyers lover for over 20 years - After a year of advertising that it was ALL Natural, etc (milk, cream, sugar and vanilla beans)then they began adding guar gum, etc. - but didn’t tell anyone!! I searched and searched - and found Turkey Hill All Natural Vanilla!!!! I am back to eating my special, all natural, ice cream daily and am very grateful that someone still knows and understands what All Natural Means! Guar gum my be ‘natural’ BUT NOT IN ICE CREAM.
June 29th, 2007 at 3:16 pmTHANKS.
JERRY from Utica, NY.
I just want a year supply of ice cream.
June 29th, 2007 at 3:15 pmI always wondered why ice cream was my favorite food group - being born in July, it’s genetic!!!
June 29th, 2007 at 3:15 pmIf there were no other food on this earth but Turkey Hill ice cream, I would be in my glory. Once we found out were to find it in our town, that is all we buy. Sad to say though, they don`t always have the new flavors and they never carry the no sugar added kind.
June 29th, 2007 at 3:11 pmWhen I was a youngster (many years ago) my great grandma had a recipe for home made ice cream and boy did I love going to her place for the week-end!!!! Of course I had to help and then we sat around that machine till it was ice cream and got to lick the paddle, Yum, Yum. I will be moving back up to your area and I would love to have a tour of the plant. My son-in-law loves ice cream too and has a big bowl every evening and I mean a big bowl!
Eating Turkey Hill ice cream, reminds me of the icce cream my grandmother use to churn. There is a smoothness that just is not in the texture of other ice creams. Here, ya go, “Turkey Hill Ice Cream is as smooth as a ride in the North Carolina countryside.” Thanks Grandma and thank you Turkey Hill !!!
June 29th, 2007 at 2:59 pmThanks for giving the OK to eat ice cream right out of the carton. My wife always yells at me for this practice. Now I have an ice cream expert’s permission.
June 29th, 2007 at 2:56 pmI love chocolate chip and the new lemon and soft vanilla swirl. It is very refreshing (Lemon swirl).
June 29th, 2007 at 2:49 pmIce-cream is amazing! Lots of people think it is just for summer, but it is great year-round!
June 29th, 2007 at 2:47 pmTurkey Hill Ice Cream…oh so good…hard to stop eating once you start…used to get an ice cream cake when it was the dog’s birthday…of course we ate it all…Happy Birthday!
June 29th, 2007 at 2:45 pmMy favorite is Eagles Touchdown Sundae!! When are you going to make a choc & coffee combo? I’ve requested it before!!
June 29th, 2007 at 2:33 pmIce Cream is a daily necessity. Coconut Pie is my favorite flavor. When it comes out we go to several stores buying gallons to freeze. Love that Turkey Hill and I love getting the calendar every year, thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!
June 29th, 2007 at 2:30 pmCelebrating is fun! My husband and kids LOVE ice cream, so we should be having a fun month!
June 29th, 2007 at 2:29 pmWould it be possible to make a rootbeer float flavor?
June 29th, 2007 at 2:25 pmSo, when will the Jets Sundae Blitz be available in NJ? Hopefully by the start of preseason tailgating!
June 29th, 2007 at 2:23 pmSorry, I should be more careful! Turkey Hill has been our favorite!
June 29th, 2007 at 2:22 pmTurkey Hill all natural is my favorite ice cream, unfortunately I have to drive 15 miles up a humongous hill to the only place that sells it in my area. Thank goodness summer is here and I can drive up that hill all I want.
June 29th, 2007 at 2:22 pmTurkey Hiss icecream has been our favorite for almost 20 years. It is the only icecream we buy!
June 29th, 2007 at 2:21 pmI’m being repetitive of all of the above comments, but I’ll go even a step further to say that Turkey Hill Ice Cream is definitely “head-over-heels” better than any other brand. It’s so flavorful and creamy compared to a lot of brands which are “icy.” I’m more conservative in my taste: I like Tin Roof Sundae, Mint Chocolate Chip, Mocha Almond Fudge over such types as ice cream with cookies, pieces of peppermint candy, etc., but that’s me! I do find my flavors harder to find at my local Giant due to the newer types of flavors though. That makes me sad.
June 29th, 2007 at 2:18 pmOur family loves Turkey Hill Ice Cream. It is truly the best around.
June 29th, 2007 at 2:14 pmOH MY GOD! I Live for PEANUT BUTTER and especially Turkey Hill with Peanut Butter Cups….to die for!!!! Makes me want to leave work now for one….
June 29th, 2007 at 2:10 pmThanks Turkey Hill - keep up the good work! Lori
MANGO GREEN TEA is our favorite
June 29th, 2007 at 2:09 pmTurkey Hill is the best. I love it.
June 29th, 2007 at 2:07 pmBETTY - Your suggestion for a jelly bean flavored ice cream is a good one! We’ll pass this along to our developement team. They’re always happy to get flavor ideas like this from customers.
June 29th, 2007 at 2:03 pmMy favorite is the CHERRY VANILLA……….. ILOVE IT.
June 29th, 2007 at 2:00 pmTurkey Ice Cream Roooccks!!!
June 29th, 2007 at 1:52 pmI just wanted to say that my family LOVES the extreme cookies and cream and the Moose Tracks. Both are in the blue, low fat container. Delicious!!! and you would never know that they are the healthier versions!
June 29th, 2007 at 1:50 pmMy favorite is the mint chocolate cookies & cream - mmmm!! My hubby is the ice cream maniac in our home and he loves most flavors. He recently tried Duetto and loved that too!!
June 29th, 2007 at 1:49 pmIce cream is good any time and a national ice cream month is as good as an excuse as any!
June 29th, 2007 at 1:47 pmWe are big fans of the Turkey Hill frozen yogurt, although I would eat just about any flavor or type!!
Enjoy!
So If President Reagan declared July National Ice Cream month, have you ever considered making jelly bean ice cream? If so, then what flavor jelly bean would be best in what flavor ice cream?????
June 29th, 2007 at 1:45 pmMy grandparents ate ice cream every night while watching the 11 o’clock news. They lived to be 87 and 96. I am soooo happy that I inherited the ice cream gene. I love ALL of the Turkey Hill flavors.
June 29th, 2007 at 1:36 pmRepublican, of course, maybe that’s why I like Turkey Hill Ice Cream so much. too.
June 29th, 2007 at 1:36 pmMy family are addicted to Turkey Hill Ice Cream and Frozen Yogurt - so much so - that we travel 60+ miles to purchase my favorite flavor of frozen yogurt on a monthly basis - Non-Fat Chocolate Marshmallow. Seems that the distributor for my local stores doesn’t offer this flavor on the order blanks. HELP!!
My husband is luckier - he likes the Chocolate Chip Light Ice Cream and is able to readily find it near home - “I should be so lucky!!” -
June 29th, 2007 at 1:35 pmI did not know that President Reagan declared July as National Ice Cream Month 1984 and the third Sunday in July as National Ice Cream Day. Whoopee!!! I guess I will have to make sure we have some Turkey Hill that day to celebrate!
June 29th, 2007 at 1:28 pmWe recently tried the new “Lemon Duetto” and really enjoyed it!!!
I can’t decided if I love the Party Cake or the Strawberry Cheesecake the best. When I want to be selfish, I get the Strawberry Cheesecake.
June 29th, 2007 at 1:27 pmI love the new Duetto so we will be serving that at our July 4th family get-together. I think it is cool to have a National Ice Cream Month to celebrate. Although, I do not need an excuse to have any!
June 29th, 2007 at 1:24 pmI didn’t know Turkey’s made Ice Cream!! Just kidding, it is the best. What I would like to see is coconut or toasted coconut in Ice Cream. Cherry coconut, Orange coconut, butterscotch toasted coconut, turkey bone vanilla. I could go on and on. There used to be a butterscotch-nut candy called chicken bones that could be used.
June 29th, 2007 at 1:23 pmWe love Turkey Hill Ice Cream, vanilla is the favorite. You can do so much with it. Like make smoothies, sundaes etc. Use the last banana that is getting too ripe, make a chocolate or butterscotch with soda crackers sundae.
No need to overdo it with other additives, just lots of ice cream.
I like all kinds of ice cream….but my latest favorite is the Peanut Butter Kandy Kake…..that is a Creamy Comotion
June 29th, 2007 at 1:21 pmEveryday is Turkey Hill ICE CREAM MONTH for me! Why wait?
June 29th, 2007 at 1:19 pmMy favorite ice cream is pistachio on the forth of july we have food drinks and ice cream.
June 29th, 2007 at 1:18 pmJuly is the PERFECT month for the Official Month for Ice Cream. Hot, hazy summer days with no better way to cool off! Plus like others said, it’s my birthday, double reasons to celebrate!!!!!!
June 29th, 2007 at 1:16 pmThis is so exciting–so many July Birthdays. Mine too. I love ice cream
June 29th, 2007 at 1:12 pmand don’t feel the least bid guilty enjoying all my favorite flavors anytime especially in July.
I like ice cream in the Winter, Summer,
June 29th, 2007 at 1:10 pmSpring and Fall! : )
My favorite flavor is Butter Pecan. Turkey Hill makes the best ice cream.
When it goes on sale I double up with 4
half gallons. Glad to know that July is
the official month for ice cream but I
celebrate it EVERY month.
Why have ice cream party cake when you can have Party Cake ice cream?
June 29th, 2007 at 1:10 pmWe used to “hijack” your trucks for Party Cake because the store nearby didn’t carry it, then it was gone altogether, but thanks to heavy boycotting, it’s back! The strange thing is, at first we wondered what the big deal was, but as we worked our way through the first half gallon over several days, the extraordinariness of the texture and flavor revitalized our receptors, so we’re “hooked” again. Why have ice cream cake when you can have cake ice cream?
June 29th, 2007 at 1:07 pmI just love your coffee ice cream If I can’t have yours I don’t want any!!
June 29th, 2007 at 1:04 pmGreat tasting ice cream. Just bought two gallons for our July 4th party. Hope it’s enough. May go back to the store and get two more just in case. Yep, going back!
June 29th, 2007 at 12:38 pmI am not going to be shy, I LOVE TURKEY HILL ICE CREAM! A few years ago I found Turkey Hill in the grocery store and bought 4 1/2 gallons. My husband thought I was out of my mind. You see I am from Lancaster County and have moved away for years. I gave up hope of ever finding it again, so I was so excited when I found it. He now loves it too. There always is Turkey Hill ice cream in our freezer, when I see it on sale, I buy extra. Thank you for coming to northwestern PA. I must mention, when my daughter was young, we use to go the Turkey Hill store in Ephrata, Pa. for ice cream cones….Now that is a memory….
June 29th, 2007 at 12:33 pmTurkey Hill ice cream is always our first choice and raspberry is our favorite flavor.
June 29th, 2007 at 12:31 pmTurkey Hill ice cream is always our first choice and raspberry is our family’s favorite flavor.
June 29th, 2007 at 12:30 pmWOW, WHERE DO WE START? We’re reading and enjoying all of your comments, but we’ll try to address a few here:
MARY - It’s good that you request flavors from your grocery store freezer manager. They really do value customer input.
TOM - Chaos and darkness without ice cream? We couldn’t imagine life without it either.
MARY ANNE - It’s funny to hear about your daughter eating the strawberry out of the neopolitan ice cream. She’s definitely not alone!
DONALD - Your story of love and chocolate ice cream is great! It sounds like a scene from a movie. It’s touching to know that our ice cream can help bring two people closer together (and that you’re willing to run out in the soaking rain for it).
JAY - You poetry skills are enviable. I think that’s the first rhyming comment anyong has every left on the Ice Cream Journal. Thanks!
June 29th, 2007 at 12:30 pmTurkey Hill ice cream is so good!
June 29th, 2007 at 12:27 pmI did not know that July was National Ice Cream Month. In celebration I am going to try some feature flavors I have never had before. Usually I stay with the same flavors, like vanilla, banana split or butter becan. In July I am going for the WILD! Who is going to venture out with me and try some new feature flavors?
June 29th, 2007 at 12:25 pmEat your ice cream year round- have got other friends and family tryimg your flavors both in ice cream and tea.
June 29th, 2007 at 12:24 pmThe ice cream tastes better while visiting friends in Mt Joy, PA, especially with an ice cold guzzle of iced tea! yummm—the perfect combo for summer. Can’t wait to see you @ the Corn Hill Fest
June 29th, 2007 at 12:24 pmTurkey Hill’s fat free chocolate cherry cordial is my favorite ice cream. I would love for you to come out with more flavors that are fat free and low calorie
June 29th, 2007 at 12:23 pmI love ice cream! But I’ve never been able to try Turkey Hill! Anybody know of a place to find it out here in California? I live in the San Francisco Bay Area.
June 29th, 2007 at 12:09 pmMmmmm. Ice cream. My husband tells me I have a problem — I say it’s never a problem!!
June 29th, 2007 at 12:08 pmIt figures the month of our Countries’ Birthday would be the same month as Ice Cream because it would be Un-American to not like Ice Cream!
June 29th, 2007 at 12:07 pmDid you know that it takes 8 letters to spell ICE CREAM? But I am excited and have been one of your satisfied valued customers for years and I am pleased that your company spends a great deal of time creating more than 8 different kinds of delicious flavors. I am most forward towards acknowledging National Ice Month. I like to indulge into 2 scoops of Mint Chocolate Chip with a scoop of Chocolate so that the two flavors compliment each other. I must say, this helps soothes all my burdens away. “Take me away Turkey Hill!”
June 29th, 2007 at 11:56 amI’m about the go on chemo and the only good thing about it is I can eat as much ice cream as I can stand. Yay for ice cream!
June 29th, 2007 at 11:55 amWhat my family loves about Turkey Hill ice cream is trying the Feature Flavor.
June 29th, 2007 at 11:52 amyummy; that’s the perfect concoction of turkey hill ice cream (toffee) serving ice cold over warm fudge brownie…is there anything else on earth that comes as close to perfection???? i think not!
June 29th, 2007 at 11:52 amWho needs an occasion to eat Turkey Hill ice cream? But it is interesting to know that July is THE MONTH.
June 29th, 2007 at 11:45 amThere is a great taste from the hill,
June 29th, 2007 at 11:42 amIts so sweet, oh so good, its a thrill,
Its so creamy and right
Eat it day and in night
In July, enjoy some, Turkey Hill
We love Turkey Hill in my house. My husband will only eat your Vanilla Bean flavor. If I buy any other vanilla ice cream it gets thrown away! My kids love the Chocolate Chip mint and I’m a peanut butter fan!! Keep it coming we LOVE your ice cream.
June 29th, 2007 at 11:42 amI wish I could continue to enjoy Turkey Hill, but my local stores seem to have discontinued carying any of your low carb selections.
June 29th, 2007 at 11:41 amTurkey Hill is the only ice cream allowed in my home. My husband loves chocolate/vanilla and I love butter pecan. What I like to do is have my potato chips with my ice cream and use them as a spoon. Yummy.
June 29th, 2007 at 11:38 amLast night it came to my attention from my wife Muriel that we had no Turkey Hill Ice Cream. It was pouring rain, but I knew that our love for each other and for Ice Cream could not go un recognized. I went to my local A&P, got thoroughly soaked in the rain. Ran down the Ice Cream Isle noticing along the way lost of full cases of various brands of ice cream. Arriving at the Turkey Hill section, much to my total amazement there were two containers of Turkey Hill Dutch Chocolate. No more of any other flavors. Standing there dripping from the rain and wondering why, it came to me clearly in a flash. “More people love Turkey Hill than any of the other brands”. Upon checking out with the last two remaining containers of Dutch Chocolate, I happend to notice a few other soaking wet men holding desperatley on to there Turkey Hill conatiners. Isn’t love grand.
June 29th, 2007 at 11:34 amTurkey Hill is by far my favorite ice cream. And my favorite flavor has always been Vanilla with Orange Swirl second on my list. I haven’t seen Orange Swirl in a couple years, however. Is it still in production?
June 29th, 2007 at 11:34 amMy daughter, Carina, was born on July 6th during a heat wave and just loves ice cream. Her favorite flavor is strawberry. The only problem is whenever we buy Turkey Hill Neopolitan ice cream, she always eats the strawberry section! The only solution is to buy her her own 1/2 gallon of strawberry!!! I’m sure she’d agree to that!
June 29th, 2007 at 11:26 amTurkey Hill ice cream is the best around!
June 29th, 2007 at 11:25 amWe love ice cream at our home and the kids love the Party Cake ice cream and now we make individual milkshakes almost every night for the kids.
Great site. Thanks-
June 29th, 2007 at 11:24 amTurkey Hill ice cream has a great variety that all taste good.
June 29th, 2007 at 11:24 amI eat ice-cream every day. Without it, there would be chaos and darkness in my life.
June 29th, 2007 at 11:19 amJULY IS THE PERFECT MONTH FOR CELEBRATING ICE CREAM.BUT I LIKE TO CELEBATE ALL YEAR LONG, OUT BY THE POOL OR IN FRONT OF THE FIREPLACE.
June 29th, 2007 at 11:19 amCHOCOLATE IS MY FAVORITE.
BUT WITH 2 BOYS AND THEY BOTH PLAY HOCKEY YOU ALWAYS HAVE A FEW EXTRA MOUTHS TO FEED ICE CREAM PLEASES THEM ALL. I ALWAYS KEEP AT LEAST 3 TO 4 CONTAINERS IN THE FREEZER. FROM SANDWICHES TO 1/2 GAL CONTAINERS.
We luv Turkey Hill products. Living in Northeast Ohio, it was a real drag when the Tops Markets were taken over by Giant Eagle. We kept asking Giant Eagle and they finally are stocking some items. My husband asks every week at the store to stock more products and all types and flavors of ice cream and related products. Your low fat/low calorie and combos of soft service and sherbert are fantastic for special diets.
June 29th, 2007 at 11:16 amHELLO TURKEY HILL AND EVERYONE ELSE WHO VISITS THIS SITE. BY NO MEANS IS THERE ANY OTHER ICE CREAM OUT THERE THAT EVEN COMES CLOSELY TO TURKEY HILL. TURKEY HILL IS THE ONLY ICE CREAM I PURCHASE FOR MY FAMILY. WE ALWAYS EAT IT WHEATHER IT IS SUMMER OR WINTER IT TASTE SO YUMMY. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS OPEN MY FREEZER DOOR AND YOU WILL SEE QUITE A BIT OF TURKEY HILL.
June 29th, 2007 at 11:15 amSo many flavors. So little time.
My absolute favorite is ah, wait a minute, I’m trying to narrow it down.
Hmmm, low carb chocolate.
No. Strike that.
Strawberry cheesecake. Yeah, that’s the ticket.
Oh, oh. Never mind that one…how about Peanut butter cup.
Dang. This is hard.
Okay, I love them all.
June 29th, 2007 at 10:55 amStephen, you’ll be happy to know that we asked our own expert, Ernie, a very similar question not too long ago (he’s Turkey Hill’s official ice cream taster, among other duties).
Ernie says it’s mostly a matter of preference, but he like likes to let his sit for a few minutes prior to eating. This raises the temperature a bit, which helps bring out the various flavors.
Personally, I’m with you and Butter Brickle Fan…if I’ve got ice cream in my bowl and a spoon in my hand, there’s no way I can let it sit there untouched.
June 29th, 2007 at 10:55 amMy fiance’ was born in raised in Lancaster. He introduced me to Turkey Hill and it was the best thing he has ever given me besides my children and a diamond! I think you should come up with some Jelly Belly jelly bean flavors ice cream around Easter.
June 29th, 2007 at 10:53 amI LOVE the multi-colored cows on your newest commercials! Ice cream should be fun-and Turkey Hill makes it fun and GOOD!
June 29th, 2007 at 10:52 amIce cream makes so many different types of celebrations special. Think about it, when is ice cream not served at parties?
June 29th, 2007 at 10:47 amWhenever friends and family come from out of town, we HAVE to have Turkey Hill Ice Cream!!! Now that I know it’s National Ice Cream month, I think we should try a new flavor every week!
June 29th, 2007 at 10:44 amI love eating vanilla Turkey Hill with Splits pretzels, that is the best of home for me.
MOE
June 29th, 2007 at 10:43 amI live for National Ice Cream month! Thanks Turkey Hill for always reminding me to eat even more ice cream than usual! Peanut Butter Cup RULES!!!
June 29th, 2007 at 10:43 amPeanut butter cup has always been my personal favorite! I love that Turkey Hill has seasonal flavors, too. Hmmmmmmm, National Ice Cream Month. Interesting.
June 29th, 2007 at 10:39 amI have to say that I searched for 3 months and many cities in my area to find your Chocolate Cupcake falvor ice cream. I found one lone half gallon of it and then could not find it again. I was on a state wide search. My father who drives truck was enlisted to search every store he went into and talked to every freezer section manager he saw and I finnaly found some in my city. I bought every one they had to make sure I had enough for a little while. Thanks for all of the great flavors and you can’t beat the price or taste. Keep up the good work.
June 29th, 2007 at 10:37 amGOOD QUESTION STEPHEN…sometimes I let my ice cream sit on the table for a few minutes to get soft and other times I just dig right in. I know sherbert is best when it’s more frozen. If it melts it gets too watery. I’d have to say I like my ice cream harder. That way I can take my time eating it and by the time I’m at the end, it’s nice and soft.
June 29th, 2007 at 10:36 amVanilla Bean … with cheeries, blueberries, strawberries, peaches, … … …
June 29th, 2007 at 10:36 amWe’ve been eating Turkey Hill ice cream for so many years now I can’t even remember not seeing it in the refrigerator freezer. Philadelphians like myself celebrate the month with a day down at the waterfront where for one day in July you can eat all the ice cream you want, second, third etc. helpings, all on one ticket.
June 29th, 2007 at 10:35 amWe love turkey hill ice Cream, Especialy your Chocolate Cherry Cordial Fat Free Frozen yogert.
June 29th, 2007 at 10:33 amIt is out of this world, Everyone should try it.
I call it Heart Smart and really good.
Hi Turkey Hill,
W
