Well, on Sunday National Ice Cream Month will officially arrive, which means you can eat ice cream with reckless abandon throughout July (even more reckless abandon than usual) and you’ll have a good excuse for doing so.
National Ice Cream Month is a relatively new “official” celebration, even though most people have been unofficially celebrating ice cream during the hot summer months for more than a century. It all started in 1984, when President Ronald Reagan declared July as National Ice Cream Month and the third Sunday in July as National Ice Cream Day. As many of you may remember, Reagan was famous for his love of jelly beans, so it makes perfect sense that he’d be the president to pay homage to ice cream. (At right is a portrait of the former president made from over 14,000 jelly beans.)
According to the International Dairy Foods Association (IFDA), Reagan signed the proclamation with the request that Americans celebrate ice cream throughout July with “appropriate ceremonies and activities.” We’re not sure what those ceremonies and activities might be, but hopefully they involve a scoop and a large bowl. Actually, who needs a bowl? During National Ice Cream Month, it’s okay to eat the ice cream right out of the container.

We LOVE Pennsylvania AND Turkey Hill, right down to the convenient cartons. My favorites are Chocolate Chip and just about anything with nuts. My husband is a strawberry fan. And topped with the fresh strawberries that we’ve been picking, French Vanilla is a winner.
I love pistachios in my mint ice cream. The crunch helps in the overall enjoyment of eating this cold dessert every single time. A close second is the taste of fresh strawberries in a vanilla based ice cream cone.
I think we should celebrate ice-cream everyday.
My husband and I have ice cream every night while watching our favorite TV shows/movies. We love all your many flavors.
Any month and any day is godd for eating Ice Cream, especially Turkey Hill. As for National Ice Cream Month/Day, another great move by a great President.
We love ice cream! We usually eat it at least once a week even during the winter when it is cold and snowing.
Happy Ice Cream Month to all!
Remember, it has to have chocolate in it to count!
Favorite quote: Never eat more ice cream than you can lift.
Why did the half-gallon carton get down-sized to only 1.75 quarts, without any corresponding reduction in price?
Any time, any day, any month is a great time for Turkey Hill ice cream. But since President Reagan had a jelly bean portrait, isn’t it time for a Bust of him made in ice scream.
I was enjoying my bowl of ice cream and remembering “the good ole days” of childhood pleasures. Then when I saw the photo of the actor/President Raygun I lost my appetite. He like the current twit in the White House couldn’t be trusted to bring any happiness to anyone unlike a good bowl of ice cream. Please leave out reactionary conservatives from your ads in the future.
Thanks to President Reagan for making July National Ice Cream month! Thanks to Turkey Hill for making so many awesome flavors. But how can you let a week go by without having ice cream? It’s just not normal!
I LOVE ICE CREAM…. I SCREAM, YOU SCREAM, WE ALL SCREAM FOR ICE CREAM… IT IS MY FAVORITE DESSERT.. AND SNACK…
My son Chase would like to breathe in Turkey Hill Mint Chocolate Chip ice cream. I am positive that this 10 year old adorable little boy is made up of 75% mint chocolate chip ice cream….and only Turkey Hill brand. It is just his good fortune that he is on the thin side. He gets his calcium via Turkey Hill.
I am glad that we have a National Ice Cream Month! Now we can celebrate with Turkey Hill ice cream!!
Ice cream, an all time favorite. I remember growing up the many hours we would sit churning to get that great smooth dip of ice cream. Thanks to Turkey Hill I don’t have to churn anymore. I love your flavors and the taste, it is so creamy.
A favorite relaxation technique of mine is sitting on the backyard swing indulging in a sweet treat, Turkey Hill ice cream of course!
My son and I go crazy for chocolate chip mint and rocky road,we finish a 1/2 gallon while watching an old movie. We were in Lancaster Pa., stopped to eat lunch, which was Turkey Hill Ice Cream, best lunch ever!!!
Turkey Hill makes the best ice cream.
There’s a great special on it this week at Giant Food Stores. Go get it!
It’s great to know that there is a national ice cream month — even though I don’t need one for a reason to buy and enjoy Turkey Hill Ice Cream!!!! I just love Turkey Hill! Even though I can only enjoy the sugar free flavors now I will still enjoy having my Turkey Hill every day!
We just love Turkey Hill! Even though I have to eat just the sugar free flavors now I will still enjoy my Turkey Hill Every Day!!!
I agree with coupons, coupons coupons. Or at least more frequent special pricing.
I remember making ice cream with the hand crank machines. All the grand-children had to take a turn on the crank if they wanted ice cream. It was hard when little. The electric machines were easier but still a lot of work. Turkey Hill ice cream tastes almost as good, and comes in flavor combinations I never would have thought of.
Ice Cream is cool. Get it.
I LOVE your ice cream. Every flavor is great! I have a bowl around 8pm every night.. My two dogs watch patiently because they know that they will get the last two bites. They give Turkey Hill their official puppy paw of approval.
While growing up eating anything out of a container from the fridge was forbidden by my very proper Mom. In truth ice cream was an occasional treat because of cost, money was very tight. Fortunately, times change and cost is no longer an object. Mom now lives with us and to catch an 86 year old, 97 lb. women eating Turkey Hill Chocolate Peanut Butter ice cream from the container, while standing in front of the freezer, causes me to become hysterical with laughter. I pause only long enough to get another spoon & alert Diane my wife. Pretty soon it gets crowded in front of the fridge.
Americans certainly love their ice cream. Therefore,it is fitting that our nation has a National Ice Cream Month.Ice cream on a hot summer day is a great treat. It is so American.
HAPPY 4TH EVERYBODY…WHAT A GREAT WAY TO CELEBRATE…..WITH ICE CREAM!!!!!!
Happy Ice Cream Month! I, myself, however think of every month as ice cream month, and every day as ice cream day. I never need an excuse to eat my favorite food. And speaking of favorites, I absolutely LOVE Turkey Hill’s lemon meringue pie – wish it was around all year and not just a special flavor.
I’m with a lot of posters here as every Sunday is Ice Cream Sunday ! i love Turkey Hill Choco & Peanut butter all stuffed into a cannolie shell !
On top of all that i buy the free coupons & give them away as thanks you’s fro my business
We love your ice cream. Yum, yum.
We just tried the lemon Duette and it seems as though this flavor can be turned into an elegant dessert. Does anyone have any recipe ideas?????
lOVE YOUR ICE CREAM. WE WISH THERE WAS A TURKEY HILL TRUCK THAT CAME BY EACH NIGHT INSTEAD OF MR. SOFTEE.
My family was in the ice cream business in Illinois for over 80 years, closing operations in the early 1990s. We were based in Ronald Reagan’s, hometown in Dixon. I was on the Lee County Republican committee to elect Ronald “Dutch” Reagan into office. As a way of getting the public downtown on election night, we decied to make some “Dutch” chocolate ice cream to give away at the Republican in downtown Dixon where thousands were treated!
Marty Hey was/is a good friend who – many years ago – persuaded his Dad to give me a summer job at the Hey Brothers Ice Cream plant in Dixon, Illinois. I remember Marty showing me a photo of “actor” Ronald Reagan holding a Hey Brother’s popsicle during one of his return trips to Dixon. Marty’s dad always served Hey Brothers Ice Cream at grade school ice cream socials. Hey Brothers Ice Cream was unsurpassed in flavor and the plant was a great place for a high school kid to work.

Have we ever really needed a National Ice Cream Month? Every month is ice cream month as far as i’m concerned. Do we need an excuse to eat ice cream? It’s just being there seems like a good enough excuse to me.
have fun with that
Of course America the fattest country in the world would celebrate a month like this
