Marty Hey was/is a good friend who – many years ago – persuaded his Dad to give me a summer job at the Hey Brothers Ice Cream plant in Dixon, Illinois. I remember Marty showing me a photo of “actor” Ronald Reagan holding a Hey Brother’s popsicle during one of his return trips to Dixon. Marty’s dad always served Hey Brothers Ice Cream at grade school ice cream socials. Hey Brothers Ice Cream was unsurpassed in flavor and the plant was a great place for a high school kid to work.

My family was in the ice cream business in Illinois for over 80 years, closing operations in the early 1990s. We were based in Ronald Reagan’s, hometown in Dixon. I was on the Lee County Republican committee to elect Ronald “Dutch” Reagan into office. As a way of getting the public downtown on election night, we decied to make some “Dutch” chocolate ice cream to give away at the Republican in downtown Dixon where thousands were treated!

While growing up eating anything out of a container from the fridge was forbidden by my very proper Mom. In truth ice cream was an occasional treat because of cost, money was very tight. Fortunately, times change and cost is no longer an object. Mom now lives with us and to catch an 86 year old, 97 lb. women eating Turkey Hill Chocolate Peanut Butter ice cream from the container, while standing in front of the freezer, causes me to become hysterical with laughter. I pause only long enough to get another spoon & alert Diane my wife. Pretty soon it gets crowded in front of the fridge.

I remember making ice cream with the hand crank machines. All the grand-children had to take a turn on the crank if they wanted ice cream. It was hard when little. The electric machines were easier but still a lot of work. Turkey Hill ice cream tastes almost as good, and comes in flavor combinations I never would have thought of.

I love Linda Haynes’ father’s method of cutting the carton in half and enjoying half on Friday and the other on Saturday. What a wonderful indulgence.

My son enjoys having an ice cream buffet – we put out as many toppings as possible, scoop some ice cream into a bowl and get crazy. He loves when some of the neighborhood kids join us, for an old-fashioned ice cream social.

My husband and I will be married 54 years on July 11. We will celabrate with Turkey Hill ice cream. But then again we have spent most of our 54 years eating ice cream every evening shortly after dinner. Once we found and tasted Turkey Hill there was no other for us. Our biggest decision is what flavor. We love them all but really like it when we find the Philly Eagles ice cream in the case. Keep up the good work.

I too am an ice cream aficionado. I have passed that on to my children and now my granddaughter! Ice cream evokes wonderful lifetime memories for me. I need more than a blog space to list them all. I must say, nothing compares to my hand dipped cone of “Original Recipe Choco Mint Chip Premium” on any given day. My family is Italian; I believe gelato runs in our veins. My grandparents used to make their own ice cream on weekends in the summer months and for special occasions. Ice cream is the most dynamic sweet- there are endless possibilities; it’s impossible to get bored. One bowl of ice cream reminds me of all that is good in the world.

My husband, son and I love Turkey Hill products. The Diet Green Tea and ice cream (ANY flavor, they look forward to finding out which flavor will be in the freezer this week) are staples in our house. In addition we feel good supporting a local, family owned business that truly cares about customers.

I had no idea that there was an official “Ice Cream Month” or “Ice Cream Day” for that matter. I like to let the ice cream sit out and melt a little. Then I take a spoon and slowly eat the melted parts. Unfortunately I have been known to eat the whole container of Turkey Hill ice cream at one sitting. It is hard to stop scooping that wonderful treat!

I just have to share this! A few months ago, my daughter wanted Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, although it didnt sound all that yummy to me, I got it anyway! One night I wanted some ice cream and all we had was the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. Well, I thought what the heck, I may as well try and see if it is as good as what my daughter says. Well, mmmm yummy yummy. Ever since, that is now my favorite! Always looking to find as many dough pieces as I can without making look like I was diggin thru the trash! LOL! I love Turkey Hill, I think it’s the best one out there. One town over from me there used to be a little ice cream stand that you could drive through. It was a treat when it was open in the summer, but when it was closed, Turkey Hill was the year round favorite in our family. I turned my sister on to Turkey Hill about five years ago and she says its the only brand she will buy now. Celebrate Ice Cream this month as our favorite dessert, but in our family we celebate ice cream everyday!!!!!

Turkey Hill is the best ice cream ever made. My dear mother and father who are no longer with us used to make it a special occasion after dinner to have our favorite flavors. My favorites are Choco Mint Chip and Black Raspberry Premium….reminds me of my childhood days.

A famous quote about ice cream I always remembered my dad who loved Mint Chip used to say was: “I don’t cry over spilt milk, but a fallen scoop of ice cream is enough to ruin my whole day. ~Terri Guillemets”….and Turkey Hill Ice Cream is ‘happiness condensed.’ I believe it – Lancaster, PA is beautiful and so is Turkey Hill ice cream.

When I sit down to eat a bowl of ice cream, I always recall my dad (now deceased) walking to the corner drugstore every Friday night and buying a half gallon of ice cream. He would cut the box in half and eat one half Friday evening and the other half on Saturday night while watching his favorite TV shows in our club basement. I especially enjoy eating it during the summer on hot, humid days. It’s so refreshing. The new Duetto has become a favorite of mine, and I’m spreading the word about how great it is. Also, I think Turkey Hill would be a great place to work!!!

Everyone took turns, was tired, and slowly ate the wonderful delicacy as it was scopped out with the wooden handle scoop.

I am currently 7 1/2 months pregnant with my 1st child. Although I have ALWAYS loved Turkey Hill ice cream and ate it at least on a weekly basis, I am now eating it daily (shh..don’t tell my Dr.)!!!! My all time favorite is Rocky Road. I could eat a gallon a day! Thanks Turkey Hill for the best Rocky Road ice cream ever made! I have no doubt that “Junior” will enjoy it as much as I do.

RUTH – About your suggestion for a root beer float flavor…not to let the cat out of the bag, but you might be in luck in the next year or so.

MICHELLE – A chocolate and coffee flavor. That sounds interesting. We’ll pass that on to our development team. And don’t worry. If it doesn’t make the cut this time, that doesn’t mean it won’t make it next time. Ice cream flavor trends are constantly changing and even though something like choco-coffee sounds unusual now, it might be the next big thing in 2008 or 2009.

RICHARD – No problem on the permission to eat ice cream straight out of the container. As for drinking OJ straight out of the carton, you’re on your own with that one.

I don’t need a special holiday for eating ice cream either! It has become part of my daily diet. What makes it perfect for me is the ingredients. I was a Breyers lover for over 20 years – After a year of advertising that it was ALL Natural, etc (milk, cream, sugar and vanilla beans)then they began adding guar gum, etc. – but didn’t tell anyone!! I searched and searched – and found Turkey Hill All Natural Vanilla!!!! I am back to eating my special, all natural, ice cream daily and am very grateful that someone still knows and understands what All Natural Means! Guar gum my be ‘natural’ BUT NOT IN ICE CREAM.

If there were no other food on this earth but Turkey Hill ice cream, I would be in my glory. Once we found out were to find it in our town, that is all we buy. Sad to say though, they don`t always have the new flavors and they never carry the no sugar added kind.
When I was a youngster (many years ago) my great grandma had a recipe for home made ice cream and boy did I love going to her place for the week-end!!!! Of course I had to help and then we sat around that machine till it was ice cream and got to lick the paddle, Yum, Yum. I will be moving back up to your area and I would love to have a tour of the plant. My son-in-law loves ice cream too and has a big bowl every evening and I mean a big bowl!

I’m being repetitive of all of the above comments, but I’ll go even a step further to say that Turkey Hill Ice Cream is definitely “head-over-heels” better than any other brand. It’s so flavorful and creamy compared to a lot of brands which are “icy.” I’m more conservative in my taste: I like Tin Roof Sundae, Mint Chocolate Chip, Mocha Almond Fudge over such types as ice cream with cookies, pieces of peppermint candy, etc., but that’s me! I do find my flavors harder to find at my local Giant due to the newer types of flavors though. That makes me sad.
