SECOND SCOOP: STRANGE FLAVORS FROM AROUND THE WORLD
Posted by: Turkey Hill Team
Back in February we wrote about odd varieties of ice cream from around the globe and some right here in the U.S. Sure, “octopus ice cream” sounds horrible, but it might be delicious to ice cream lovers in Japan. Besides, they might think “chocolate chip cookie dough” is downright nauseating (but we doubt it). Enjoy a second scoop of some flavors you probably didn’t want a scoop of in the first place!

Some people make ice cream at home using sophisticated ice cream machines and others do it with much simpler methods. Either way, the great thing about do-it-yourself ice cream is that you can experiment by making all sorts of unusual flavors.
Speaking of unusual flavors, here’s a few varieties of ice cream from around the world that definitely fit that category:
- Sweet Potato Ice Cream (Japan)
- Rose Petal Ice Cream (From the Rose Café in Venice, California)
- Octopus Ice Cream (Japan)
- Chunky Bacon Ice Cream (From the Udder Delight Ice Cream House in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware)
- Mango Seaweed Ice Cream (Taiwan)
- Habanero Pepper Ice Cream (USA)
- Beer & Nuts Ice Cream (Max & Mina’s in Queens, NY)
There’s even a website with an “ice cream flavor generator” you can use to invent random and endless combinations of wacky varieties. Try it yourself and let us know what comes up. Turn on the “Gross & Weird” feature if you dare. (Who’s up for a little Triple Salmon Soybean Swirl?)

If you’ve got a technical question about the ice cream making process or some other inquiry about the nuances of America’s favorite treat, chances are Ernie has the answer. He might not be able to answer all questions, but he’ll try his best and some may be featured on the Ice Cream Journal.

Wow… I’ll try ANYTHING once, I’m a very adventurous type. But some of these might require a bit of encouragement! Ha ha!
How could ANYONE -not- love Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough! omigosh! Just the thought of not having it on hand to satisfy those midnight-cravings… perish the thought!
July 26th, 2007 at 12:31 pmWe have a local Lima Bean Festival every summer here in Cape May (our farms used to raise all the lima beans for Fordhook) with all the local restaurants and organizations trying different recipes; Lima Bean Ice Cream isn’t as bad as it might sound!!
July 21st, 2007 at 2:14 pmTried that wacky thing a couple of times and got: Ultimate Squirrel French Fry Parfait, and Smooth Hazelnut Duck Ice Cream. Though I’d pass on the squirrel bit, french fry ice cream could be interesting…
July 18th, 2007 at 7:40 pmTops closed in our area and they were the only place to purchase Turkey Hill.
July 16th, 2007 at 2:54 pmWrote to Giant Eagle to please stock it on their shelves. Well, to my surprise they now carry Turkey Hill and I am over
joyed for it is my favorite ice cream
Some of those sound gross!! Although Chunky Bacon Ice Cream from the Udder Choice sounds okay, I went to an Udder Choice and the flavors were fairly normal!! It was in PA, though, so they might not have done that. When I went to Rehobeth, though, I didn’t see an Udder Choice.
Mint Chocolate Chip obsessed people unite!!!!!!!!!!!!!
July 16th, 2007 at 12:53 pmIce cream in any flavor, especially unique flavors tend to heighten the taste buds. Ice cream is always cool and relaxing and brings enjoyment.
July 13th, 2007 at 10:50 amI have heard of lobster flavored ice cream and Jack Daniels whiskey flavors. Surprisingly they are the best sellers on the menus. Me personally will keep tasting Turkey Hill, I love that ice cream!
July 13th, 2007 at 3:53 amI would prefer just two scoops of what I ordered since that would be my favorite.
July 12th, 2007 at 11:32 pmI”d like to try the Habanero (cold and hot at the same time) and the rose petal ones – they sound interesting, but more important – where’s the coconut cream pie that anne wrote about? I’d buy that in a minute!
July 12th, 2007 at 5:05 pmi suggested a few a couple of months ago.
July 12th, 2007 at 5:00 pmi remember a bubblegum when i was a kid.
of the recent TH featured flavors, i liked the Fried Ice Cream.
Beer and nuts? hmmmmm
Those flavors don’t sound too appealing to me,lol. The absolute best i’ve ever had is Turkey Hills Coconut Cream Pie!! Unfortunately none of my local grocery stores had it this year–what a disappointment!
July 12th, 2007 at 4:49 pmGot to love Turkey Hill ice cream! There are so many flavors to choose from, and the Special Editions are here for a short while and than there gone for another year. Turkey Hill… please stop teasing us! Please make them stay forever!!!
July 12th, 2007 at 3:29 pmI agree with the comment about the pumpkin pie ice cream. Turkey hill should make that!! I’ve had pumpkin at a local ice cream shop when they have it in the fall and it was delish!! Right now my favorite of turkey hill’s is the duette, raspberry. yummmmmm.
July 12th, 2007 at 2:21 pmWhile in Gilroy California I was surprised to find Garlic ice cream!!
July 12th, 2007 at 12:40 pmWell other than Sweet Potato and Beer and Nuts Ice Creams, I think I’ll stick to what Turkey Hill has to offer.
July 12th, 2007 at 12:38 pmOh do some sound gross, I wouldn’t try any of those, stick with NorMal flavours,’cept the whoopie Pie flavor!
July 12th, 2007 at 11:38 amFound Lobster Ice Cream on Cape Cod, Butter Based Ice Cream with Chunks of Lobster Meat. Think I’ll stick with Turkey Hill P’Nut Butter Ripple!!!
July 12th, 2007 at 11:10 amI love ice cream – but none of those sound good to me.
July 12th, 2007 at 10:50 amI’ll try any kind of ice cream, but my favorite is rocky road. I love ice cream with lots of nuts and chips, then I top it off with chocolate syrup. Turkey Hill Rocky Road has loads of nuts and chips, it’s the best. I think I will have some for lunch! Thank you!!
July 12th, 2007 at 10:05 amRuth, thanks for the tip. Turkey Hill Dairy ice cream lovers really like helping each other….I like that. I like a bargain too, that’s why I am “Mr. BargainMAN.”
July 12th, 2007 at 8:44 amI work for a chocolate factory/store and we make pieces of chocolate with hot pepper liquid in it. It must sell or we wouldn’t keep making it. I tasted it once when we were making it,,, I didn’t care for it, but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. I guess if someone liked “HOT” stuff,, they would like hot pepper ice cream. Not me,, I’ll stick to the “old fashioned” normal flavors. Personally, I like anything with nuts in it, nuts & cherries are even better! I wish our store carried more Turkey Hill flavors so I could try them all!
July 12th, 2007 at 8:31 amOctopus ice cream? Do you put chocolate syrup on that, or wasabi?
July 12th, 2007 at 7:45 amI think I’ll stick with moose tracks!
Although I am sure if Turkey Hill were to make some of those flavors, like sweet potato pie, It would be delicious!
I think I’ll go have a bowl of fudge ripple.
July 11th, 2007 at 8:35 pmWell, for the standard variety I got:
Brownie Boysenberry Twist
mmm.
For the weird variety, I got:
July 11th, 2007 at 7:46 pmDirty Tomato Rutabega Ice Cream
Seems like it would work better as a water ice… if I would ever consider it.
I wonder … do you have to be 21 and show your driver’s license to order Beer & Nuts Ice Cream? LOL!
July 11th, 2007 at 5:11 pmI tried dandelion ice cream at a Cub Scout event about 15 years ago. It wasn’t that bad. I also had dandelion tea and chocolate ants. I gagged on the ant because I was too gossed out to eat it. I would try the weird ice creams if I didn’t know what I was sampling first. How about LIVER ice cream? YUCK–I wouldn’t touch it with a ten foot pole. I’ll stick with Turkey Hill. I hope my Giant Eagle has that sale. I’ll be there!!
July 11th, 2007 at 3:49 pmI’m a bit of a NUT lover; Your favorite Turkey Hill ice cream, nuts and loads of whip cream…on a Hot summer’s day!! Now that’s living!!
July 11th, 2007 at 3:24 pmI just received my Giant Eagle circular in the mail. Starting tomorrow, Thursday, Turkey Hill Icecream is on sale 5 for $10. You all know where I’m going tomorrow!!! : )
July 11th, 2007 at 2:34 pmCircus Peanut Ice Cream. I love that!
July 11th, 2007 at 1:49 pmAfter some discussion around the office, it’s a split decision. About half are like CJ, willing to try anything once. The other half are like many of the rest of you — perfectly happy with good old fashioned flavors.
Although we have to admit, those flavors suggested by GREG C sound pretty good too.
July 11th, 2007 at 1:17 pm“Whipped Cheeseburger Grass Ice Cream”
Mmmmm…cheeseburgers!
July 11th, 2007 at 12:49 pmI’m more of a salty snacker than a sweets-lover, so I’m interested in that bacon one!!!! But mostly I’m just great with a bowl of chocolate marshmallow
July 11th, 2007 at 12:35 pmNone of the varieties from around the world appeal to me. In fact, they all sound a little repulsive.
July 11th, 2007 at 12:28 pmThat site came up with this for me: Blackened Ant Dark Matter Ice Cream.
I don’t think you should make that one.
Sweet Potato Pie ice cream would probably be awesome- or Pumpkin Pie for that matter.
July 11th, 2007 at 12:13 pmI think that I will just stick with the chocolate varieties. I like sweet ice cream flavors, not savory or seafood. YUCK!
July 11th, 2007 at 11:45 amwow, I thought the Graham Slam was great but now I want to try the sweet tea with lemon or the sweet potato.
July 11th, 2007 at 11:26 amlet me know asap when they will be offered.
Wowee… Mango Seaweed, eh? I’m adventurous with food, but, that’s a bit beyond me I think. I would like to try that habanero pepper one, though!
Here’s a few to try: (these do not exist as far as I know…)
Circus Peanut Ice Cream
Orange circus peanut-flavored ice cream, with either chunky bits of circus peanuts, and/or orange marshmallow creme (like you’d find in chocolate marshmallow ice cream) swirled throughout!
Sweet Tea with Lemon Ice Cream
Sweet tea is a summertime staple in the south, and so is ice cream! Why not have both together? The ice cream would probably not have any inclusions… it would just be sweet tea flavor with a touch of lemon.
(I guess you could include some sort of dry cookie bits… like animal crackers or something. Would just be better on the smallish side…)
I’ll see if I can think of any more…
July 11th, 2007 at 11:23 amAs unappetizing as some of those sound, I’ll try anything once.
Though any kind of seafood and ice cream seem like the most unlikely pairing.
Oddly enough, I can remember as a child, often thinking about broccoli ice cream. For some reason I found the idea to be really amusing. I think I even wrote a little story about it in fourth grade.
July 11th, 2007 at 10:58 amI think I’ll just stick with Turkey Hill flavors!!!! It is always the best!!!
