8 WAYS TO CELEBRATE NATIONAL ICE CREAM DAY

Posted by: Turkey Hill Team

triple_dip.jpgJust a quick reminder to everyone that in the midst of National Ice Cream Month is yet another reason to celebrate ice cream. That reason, of course, is National Ice Cream Day and that glorious day is this Sunday, July 15th.

We’re not sure if this will create a frenzy in the ice cream aisle at your local grocery store, causing all the ice cream to be sold out by Saturday afternoon. Still, you might not want to take any chances. If you’re not already stocked up on Moose Tracks and Cherry Duetto, now might be the time to do it. We’re just kidding of course, but if people rush to the store for milk and bread when a storm approaches, why wouldn’t they do the same for National Ice Cream Day?

With that, we thought we’d offer a few tips for how to celebrate National Ice Cream Day in style:

  • Have ice cream for breakfast (if there’s one day of the year when you can do that, it’s this Sunday)
  • Go to a baseball game and eat ice cream out of one of those minature helmets
  • Have ice cream for lunch
  • Prepare a dessert or meal using ice cream as an ingredient (recipes here)
  • Pay a visit to your local ice cream stand and order a sundae with extra whipped cream and chocolate fudge or a triple scoop cone with three different flavors
  • Make ice cream at home with a tin can
  • Have ice cream for dinner (or a milkshake with your dinner)
  • Watch your favorite movie with friends and family while eating ice cream (or while eating the ice cream dessert you made earlier)

The possibilties are endless. If we’re missing anything, or if you have any suggestions of your own for how to celebrate National Ice Cream Day, just let us know!

National Ice Cream Month is a great excuse to eat ice cream every day! We love Turkey Hill all natural vanilla.

Try a Cherry Vanilla Ice Cream Soda:

Mash frozen or fresh cherries in the bottom of a cup with a little bit of sugar and lime juice. Add half a glass of seltzer or lemon lime soda. Add a scoop of Turkey Hill All Natural Vanilla. Fill the cup with the seltzer or soda. Top with whipped cream.

It is delicious!!

I’m with Janis! Chocolate Cherry Cordial ROCKS! I started buying it in an attempt to eat healthier and lose weight (lost about 60 overall!), and soon forgot that it was fat free; it was THAT good. The best part is, I generally get to eat it all myself, as my husband’s more of a mint cookies ‘n cream kind of a guy. :)

Turkey Hill Team wrote:

WOW! Congratulations Janis. We’re glad to hear that you are still able to find a way to reward yourself with ice cream and frozen yogurt.

Our own Ernie (of “Ask Ernie” fame) recently lost over 40 pounds and he’s our official ice cream taster who still enjoys his favorite ice cream at home. A lot of people are hesitant to give light ice cream a chance, but once they taste it they’re usually surprised about how great it is.

Speaking of our Light Recipe flavors, try our Extreme Cookies and Cream. After you try that, you can say goodbye to any misconceptions you may have had about light ice cream!

Janis wrote:

I celebrate ice cream day every day. When I set out to lose 100 lbs., I feared most losing my daily fix of ice cream. No more fancy ice cream. I steadied myself to endure low fat, no sugar added, etc. And frozen yogurt? Must be yucky. So after losing 113 pounds and learning that alternatives are good and tasty, I continue my nutritious choices. Sure I miss the specials and some old favorites, but my healthy feeling is worth it. Guess what my favorite flavor is. Chocolate Cherry Cordial and it’s YOGURT, imagine that!

I feel good that I’m not the only one eating ice-cream for breakfast. In third grade we were talking a healthy breakfast and we all needed to say what we had for breakfast. I said, “strawberry ice-cream with rainbow sprinkles.” I got a lot of stares and plenty of people saying that you cannot eat ice- cream for breakfast. I thought that it was totally normal to eat ice-cream for breakfast. I bet that all the third graders in my class asked there moms if they could have ice-cream for breakfast the next morning!

Ice cream on oatmeal sounds awesome. Happy Ice Cream Day to all the ice cream lovers out there. There is nothing else that tastes so good and makes me happy. Thanks for all the Turkey Hill flavors!

My birthday was yesterday - National Ice Cream Day - but I didn’t have ice cream for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. I did however have my nightly mug (I NEVER MISS IT) and enjoyed it knowing that my day was also National Ice Cream Day and for a true ice cream lover it was quite fitting. I eat more ice cream than other other food item

Turkey Hill’s ice cream is the greatest. My wife loves Butter Pecan and I love Party Cake. No other companies ice cream can compare to Turkey Hill’s. We have tried a few other’s, when on sale, but we throw out theirs and always get Turkey Hill’s Ice Cream.

Janie wrote:

I’m happy to read about all the other folks who eat ice cream for breakfast. I have let my kids eat ice cream for breakfast a couple of times - on school days, no less! They’ve gone to bed the night before looking forward to breakfast and it is not a problem waking them up in the morning! I figured it’s dairy, and has only a bit more sugar than the cereals out there. We remember it as something fun! I agree w/the person who mentioned hot oatmeal w/a scoop of ice cream on it - yummy! whether summer or winter!

Debbie Falter wrote:

It’s making me cry as I’m writing this. My Birthday is July 21st, I would give ANYTHING to just taste your Black Cherry or Vanilla Bean. UMMMM!!!!!!.
It’s so sad.

Sometimes I can be very boring with my ice cream But I’m an avowed Chocoholic. Today was one one those days so I had 2 scoops of Philly Style Chocolate with crushed Heath bar for b’fast. I also made a Chocolate/Cocolate Peanut butter Ice cream pie. I lined a Pyrex pan with crushed Oreo Cookies (minus the filling) and spread the 2 chocolates (Philly Style Choc & Choc Peanut Butter) over the crumbs. Freeze then slice and serve with Fresh Scotch Flavored Whipped cream (2 tsp of Laphroaig Single Malt in Heavy cream and sugar) Whip to soft peaks. Yummy. Sorry that recipe topping is only for the Adults!!!

Im normally never without my turkey hill, especially since I discovered Tastykake, I’ve gotten my whole family hooked on it. What will I do on National Ice cream day without my tastykake. Please, bring it back!

Turkey Hill vanilla ice cream makes a great dinner! I love plain old vanilla, but one could add a dash of whipped cream!!! Yum! But as a kid I loved Pistachio ice cream! Does Turkey Hill make that favor- our food store does not stock it!

I’ve been taking my family on yearly trips to Lancaster County, PA for many years. One of the biggest highlights for me was the getting some Turkey Hill Ice Cream! We ate it everyday. National Ice Cream Day sounds like a day to be celebrated with family and friends sharing in a bowl of Turkey Hill. I might even give some of the recipes a try although, I love just eating the ice cream just the way it comes in the container.

Another way to enjoy your favorite flavors - make your own ice cream cake. Soften a 1/2 gallon of your favorite flavor and spread in the bottom of a cake size plastic freezer container. Crush up your favorite cookies, layer them on the ice cream and then layer with a second flavor of softened ice cream. Top with a layer of cool whip and refreeze. enjoy!

Just picked up the lemon pie flavor yesterday, I totally forgot about it in the freezer!! Sunday will be the day I try it for breakfast! I’ll just picture it in the shape of a slice of pie!!

Turkey Hill just arrived at Cleveland, Ohio. We had been enjoying it while we lived in North Carolina. Hooray it’s here! We presently have strawberries & cream, black cherry and butter pecan in the freezer. Went to buy more yesterday and the grocery store was OUT OF TURKEY HILL. We told the manager we would come back! Substitutes just don’t make it.

I didn’t know about this holiday! What a way to celebrate! Icecream, or foods made with icecream. (I have a recipe for sticky buns made with french vanilla icecream. Or what about icecream pie or cake?) I think we might just have a buffet of icecream with various toppings and let everyone just “go for it!”

Kathy Eger wrote:

I’ve never written to a blog before — This seems llike a great time. Good vanilla ice cream on a piece of State fair winning apple pie (mine BTW) is one of my best memories! The other is having pizza after an afternoon swim with the kids and going home to Turkey Hill cones (strawberry, my choice)

CJ wrote:

Ha! Ha! I’m laughing today as I post.

Ice cream for breakfast has always been a standard for me. Doesn’t sound healthy, I know. But, if you eat your fats and calories early then you have the day to burn them off.

My husband has long been shaking his head at my unorthodox eating habits.

His loss. Maybe I can convince him to join me in honor of National Ice Cream Day. And I won’t have to disguise my breakfast from my son either. He will need no convincing to join in the festivities.

What fun. And I pulled out my box of sugar cones yesterday and dropped that fluffy little white ball right in the bottom, topped with Turkey Hill Snyder’s Chocolate Covered Pretzel Ice Cream. Worked like a charm.
