DID YOU KNOW?

Just a quick fact for today’s entry. We may actually make this “Did you know?” thing a regular feature on the Ice Cream Journal. There are so many random and fun facts about ice cream out there that deserve to be noticed.

Did you know that the world record for the most ice cream eaten is held by Patrick Bertoletti of Chicago, Illinois? On May 26, 2006, he ate 1.75 gallons of vanilla ice cream in 8 minutes during an ice cream eating contest in Brooklyn, New York. It should be noted that Bertolleti is a professional competitive eater whose other eating records include 19 slices of pizza in 10 minutes, 11.1 pounds of shoofly pie in 8 minutes and 177 pickled jalepeno peppers in 15 minutes. For now, we’d be happy with the ice cream title.

And I thought my husband was bad eating a half of a half gallon of Turkey Hill Fudge Swirl with a large slab of cake underneath it every night in a bowl that would hold a pound of spaghetti. Yet he is thin, and I am fighting the battle of the bulge except when I cave in and enjoy a bowl of Turkey Hill Vanilla Bean.

Did he also down dozens of Mrs. Stahl’s of Brighton Beach Knishes or the sandy greasey ones on sold on the beach.

Brooklyn has or had many great eating places for nitche foods mostly by the waters which surround 3 sides of it.

I gotta find a brandy snifter for at home and i could have the same thing here with Turkey Hill peanut Butter Ripple with peanut butter syrup, nuts, whipped cream, etc!

I take my time when eating Turkey Hill Ice Cream to savor each and every spoonful for all the qualities that go into the making of this delightful food. In fact I usually make that second trip to the Refrigerator (encore)for that special treat to make sure I didn’t miss anything about this relaxing part of the day for me.

Turkey Hill’s Chocolate Marshmallow has caught the same texture and quality. Try a nice big dish of Chocolate Marshmallow in a microwave dish. Put your dish of ice cream 5 to 11 seconds in the microwave. The marshmallow catches the heat and becomes smushy and you start to hear Frankie Avalon on the Juke Box.

Hummmmmmmmmmmm, I wonder if I could do that (maybe with a little help from my husband and three dogs). Everyone dogs included get their dose of Turkey Hill ice cream every night. What I like the best is that after our treat that is soooooooooooo sweet but not bad for you it signal the end of the meal and no more eating of anything till the next day.

Did you know…

if you eat faster, you can eat more? It’s because you consume more while your brain takes up to 20 minutes sending the thought that ‘you’re full’ to your stomach.

Still, that’s a lot of ice cream.

What flavors were the ice cream??

I can’t even watch those competitions- much rather watch a bunch of children on the sidewalk try to wolf down their cones, leaking from the bottom or not ( :

R Tianna - To answer your question about famous ice cream firsts, the history of ice cream is a little cloudy. We do know that the first ice cream cone was invented in New York City in 1896 by Italo Marchiony. A few years later, in 1904 during the St. Louis World’s Fair, the ice cream cone really caught on when an ice cream vendor ran out of dishes and used rolled up waffle pastries from a neighboring food stand to serve ice cream in.

When I first read that, I thought it said 1.75 QUARTS, you know… the almost half-gallon size. And I have nearly done that in one sitting (don’t know about eight minutes…) but usually stop because I want to save some for later! But 1.75 GALLONS. That’s insane!! Props to my fellow New Yorker.

I once at a large (plate-size) waffle covered with blueberries in 44 seconds. (I was a college kid. We weren’t that smart.) And I am a fast eater in general. But I am just floored by that record.

Still… I might try to break it some day. I’ll let you know if I do. ;-)

Whoohoo, I love how Brooklyn is the Place for most (not all) only most food eating contest. I had my first Gellatto there so I’ve really enjoyed the mango version served Duetto. (I’m not a vanilla Fan although I do like the Turkey Hill Vanilla Bean ice cream mixed with 2 Tbsp on Pure Hershey Cocoa powder. The deep cocoa flavour is really brought out by the vanilla bean. I enjoyed it so much that In the Winter here in NY, I give my niece and nephew and myself a small scoop (the kind that you use for melon balls) of vanilla bean ice cream on top of the cocoa. (Not hot chocolate) Milk vanilla, Cocoa powder, saucepan on the stove, fluffy marshmellows, ice cream instead of whipped cream it melts a little, floating with a nice foamy outer shell (like an ice cream egg. I could talk about ice cream all day. Bye the Bye Who is credited for the first ice cream, 1st cone, first waffle, and what was the first flavour?
