ASK ERNIE: HOW DO YOU STAY IN SHAPE?
Posted by: Ernie
Jean from Ohio asks:
Ernie, how long have you been on that job and how much weight have you gained? If you haven’t gained any weight, what’s your secret?
Thanks for your question, Jean. I started in the “Dairy Business” at 18 months of age, delivering an empty milk bucket to my dad for him to fill after he was finished milking the cows. I’ve been here at Turkey Hill for the last 14 years and actually over the past year I’ve been able to lose more than 40 pounds.
Eating sensibly with portion control and exercising regularly are the driving forces behind my fitness plan. But I still make room for ice cream by treating it as a reward to myself. Yes, you can literally have your Turkey Hill Ice Cream and eat it too!
Ernie
P.S. - I just noticed that this month’s poll crossed the 4,000 vote mark this weekend. That’s a lot of votes! I’d like to thank everyone who’s been reading the Ice Cream Journal and leaving comments throughout the month. It’s fun to hear from so many different people and even though we can’t respond to all of your comments personally, we do read and appreciate all of them.

If you’ve got a technical question about the ice cream making process or some other inquiry about the nuances of America’s favorite treat, chances are Ernie has the answer. He might not be able to answer all questions, but he’ll try his best and some may be featured on the Ice Cream Journal.

I like that, Ernie, keep up the good work and congratulations on the 40 pound reduction.
July 29th, 2007 at 10:31 amWell, being i work full time in a hospital, (3-11 shift) i’m on my feet the entire time i’m there, taking vital signs, and answering call lights all night, so only get to sit for dinner break! Like a gym, only I get PAID!!
July 26th, 2007 at 5:01 pmportion control is certainly the key to staying at a good weight. BUT… every once in a great while, everyone needs to pig out on a giant sundae loaded up with all kinds of toppings! it is essential to good emotional well being. :o)
July 25th, 2007 at 11:37 pmYou did not say what shape you are in. It could be like a muscleman or round like Buddy Hacket. My TH method is to just eat 4 or 5 teaspoons of TH Red Rasberry a night to stimulate my taste buds.
July 24th, 2007 at 11:58 pmI agree with portion control. I just switch from fat free to the light and it’s delicious. As my mom and dad often remind me “Everything in moderation including moderation”.
July 24th, 2007 at 12:33 pmI love the fat free ice creams and frozen yogurts! Still, I have to limit myself to the weekends or else. It is hard to control portions or seconds/thirds, etc.
July 24th, 2007 at 11:29 amSUE - Your “ice cream only” diet suggestion sounds like a great idea. Do you think you’d get tired of ice cream after a while? Is that even possible?
July 24th, 2007 at 10:51 amI really don’t have to watch what I eat, I’m thin and always have been, but the fat in ice cream is what I have to watch, I have high cholesterol so I have to be careful. Duettos are great and so are the sherberts. I do love ice cream and once I have some I can’t stop! Last night I bought Lemon Duetto. so far I had the cherry and mango tonight its the Lemon!
July 24th, 2007 at 10:41 amI had the Turkey Heill Lemon ice cream once, I think it must have been a Special Edition. It was SO GOOD that I check for it now EVERY time I stop at a Turkey Hill! When are you ever going to bring it back!?
July 24th, 2007 at 9:05 amHey Ernie,, how bout we just ditch the “regular food” every day and eat Turkey Hill ice cream for breakfast, lunch & dinner and snacks? LOL A different flavor for every meal!
July 24th, 2007 at 8:15 amThanks so much for the advice and the great ice cream. My favorite indulgence is a big bowl of Turkey Hill. I don’t feel guilty because it is so good and I am pretty good about moderation the rest of the day. I think everyone should stop for a moment to enjoy life, especially with a big bowl of Turkey Hill ice cream.
July 24th, 2007 at 4:42 amYour right Ernie, if you add exercise to your routine, you can eat Turkey Hill ice Cream and not gain weight. I Recently lost 50lbs. by modifying my diet and exercising regularly. I did not give up ice cream however.
Keep the blog coming, I enjoy all the useful information.
July 23rd, 2007 at 10:10 pmI ain’t huge like some other people but I do love icecream!! Its one of the best things to eat at anytime of the day!! I love the chocolate Turkey Hill icecream it rocks!!
July 23rd, 2007 at 9:58 pmTried the Mango Duetto today, tangy and good, never even ate a mango before, went by the comments here to try it! Don’t think I could drop that from my favorites and lose weight ever!
July 23rd, 2007 at 9:52 pmWhaddya know…so THAT’S where Ernie’s 40 pounds went…! RIGHT ON MY BELLY!
July 23rd, 2007 at 9:34 pmHowever…I cannot quit my Tin Roof addiction so I substitute one dinner with Tin Roof, or one lunch with Tin Roof..and then for snack time: yup, Tin Roof! Turkey Hill reigns SUPREME in my home. I’m a forever fan!
That’s great to have lost 40 pounds and still be able to have ice cream! Congrats and keep up the good work.
July 23rd, 2007 at 7:45 pmI try to watch what I eat in somewhat moderation. I was told to take vitamin D by my doctor. Us older woman have to make sure we’re getting enough calcium. This is a delicious way to add it to our regimen. It’s my excuse for eating ice cream daily… Like I really need an excuse…. LOL
July 23rd, 2007 at 2:42 pm“A half gallon serving.” That reminds me of a cartoon I saw not long ago involving a man and a giant ice cream cone.
July 23rd, 2007 at 1:15 pmthis is very good news.
July 23rd, 2007 at 12:24 pmI will make sure to share it with my husband that he can have is Turkey Hill every day.
he is the ice cream monster in our house.
when we bought our refrigerator in 1979, the first thing he wanted was Ice Cream.
I also eat right. I only have one serving of Turkey Hill at lunch.
July 23rd, 2007 at 12:14 pmUsually just a half gallon serving.
We tried your fat free icecream for the first time this weekend. I honestly can not tell the difference! It is so rich and creamy!
July 23rd, 2007 at 10:21 amErnie you should write a book. “How a professional ice cream taster lost weight and how you can too!” The title needs a little work, but the idea is good.
