FEATURED PET: DUNCAN LOVES HIS PEANUT BUTTER MANIA

Posted by: Turkey Hill Team

It’s said that 10 percent of dog and cat owners share their ice cream with their pets. After reading through some of the comments left on the Ice Cream Journal about how many of you indulge with your pets, we’d think that number would be higher. (Check out this month’s poll on the right to register your own thoughts on this behavior.)

Many of you have talked about how your dogs, cats and even birds are bigger ice cream fans than you are, so we thought it would be a good idea to feature ice cream-loving pets here on the blog, starting with Duncan, a two-year-old West Highland Terrier owned by Terri R. from Pittsgrove, NJ. According to Terri, Duncan and his brother Gillie like all flavors, but they like Strawberry Cheesecake the best.

If anyone else has an ice cream-loving pet, send us a photo of your pet indulging in his or her favorite Turkey Hill treat. If we use it on the Ice Cream Journal (and chances are, we will), we’ll send you and Fido a coupon for some free ice cream.

(NOTE: Because some dogs and other pets are prone to lactose intolerance, care should be taken when feeding your pet ice cream. Like most “people food” treats, moderation is the key. Talk to your veterinarian if you have questions about your pet’s ability to eat ice cream.)

Just so everyone knows Duncan only gets a little here and there and it is always light Turkey Hill ice cream. He never gets any flavors containing chocolate or nuts.

Back to good old Turkey Hill Ice Cream.
It’s going to go up to the high 80’s in the North-East starting tommorow.

Duncan is just precious! We have two West Highland White Terriers and will have to give Charlie and Corkie a taste of Turkey Hill Ice Cream. I just bet they will prefer it to their usual dog chow!

Of course after reading all the concerns about animals and people food we do have to be careful…my pets ONLY get to lick the dishes before they make it to the dishwasher. And of course, there is NEVER much left in the bowls anyway after we’ve had our share!!!

My cat Acorn adores ice cream, but I try to only give her vanilla or something plain (I stay away from all chocolate with her since I know it is toxic to pets). She gets about a teaspoon or so on a little saucer whenever I am having ice cream. We keep our ice cream in our basement refrigerator, so she runs down there whenever I am going, but gets annoyed when I am heading to the basement for another reason. As another little aside, she only likes the pure stuff. I have put out low-fat vanilla ice cream on occasion and she takes one tiny taste and shakes her paw at it and leaves disgusted!!!

I just love the picture of Duncan! The dog is smilling! I have a dog an a cat an I known it is not really good to give them people in general but I do let them lick my vanilla or peach flavor ice cream (!What would life be without animals!)

That is so awesome! Way to not waste anything, TH!!! I would have never believed my dad (or anyone else who jokes aroung a lot) if he had said that TH gives the ice cream scraps to pigs!

By the way, I have a pig… yes, did I not mention that?… I will.. I mean my PIG will enjoy the leftover scraps, especially of Mint Chocolate Chip [saying to person behind me] Yes I know Chocolate is bad for animals. [to computer] Ignore my comment. Yes, of course I have a pig [squirm anxiously]…

My cat Chip loves ice cream. He has to stick his face to the bowl and smell the flavor, then decide to take a lick. He likes chocolate and vanilla, and you should see him eat tapioca pudding! Must get a pic to you having some T.Hill ice cream.

A potbellied pig who loves ice cream! That’s priceless Sue. Please send us a photo of Harley enjoying some of his favorite treat.

Did you know that the scrap ice cream and other leftover ice cream from our production process is shipped to nearby farms and fed to local pigs? It’s true! They love it.

I have to admit I used to feed my dog ice cream and he loved it. I guess we both know great tasting ice cream comes from Turkey Hill.

I have a dog & a potbellied pig. Both have to have ice cream whenever we have a birthday party. I give them their own dish with cake & ice cream on it! Mindy, the dog, eats her’s very daintily,, but Harley, the pig,, well,, lets just say, it’s quite a site. I”ll try & get a picture the next time he eats ice cream!

Cute story, I don’t have a dog but I am sure that if i did they would love ice cream as much as I do.

Rosemary wrote:

A little ice cream once in a while is okay for dogs but please remember that chocolate anything is toxic to dogs and could kill them and don’t forget the high fat content. An overweight dog is an unhealthy dog. But, hey, a little ice cream here and there never hurt anyone, so enjoy, Rover!

I agree 100%. My cat Holly loves T.H. Vanilla as stated in my last blog. I very rarely give her milk. It’s hard to say “NO” when she has her paws wrapped around my leg and begging for a bite of ice cream. I give her about a heaping teaspoon. Her favorite thing is to lick clean the last traces of the empty container. I’ll try to get a photo of her next time. You should never give pets chocolate! It could be toxic.

Every dog I’ve ever owned has loved ice cream. However, now we usually buy Frosty Paws, or one of the brands made just for animals. Although our dogs have never had problems with any type of people food, it’s better to be safe than sorry. They love the dog brands as well. And we get our ice cream all to ourselves!

I don’t have a pet, but the stories are still enjoyable to read. Although I must admit, I’d be concerned for my pet eating ice cream….Nice touch adding the lactose information. I’m sure a lot of pet owners never considered it…but it’s far too late to stop giving up the ice cream now!

Good catch Sarah. We’re changing that as we speak. And it looks like someone just voted “yes”. Some lucky dogs, cats or birds in that household!

Sarah wrote:

I just voted in the “July” ice cream poll… don’t you mean the “August” ice cream poll? Right now it’s 100% No and 0% Yes. But there’s only two votes. Who was the first one to vote ’cause it wasn’t me?

Sarah wrote:

Nice touch about the lactose intolerance thing. It’s nice to know that TH cares about your pets.

My dog would probably love ice cream, except she would eat too much and get sick. I am pretty sure she not lactose intolerant, because she once got a hold of a lot of cheese and didn’t get sick! Besides, we only usually have chocolate mint chip around (now we have cookies and cream)… and hopefully Duettos!
I wonder if Scrappy would like Duettos…….
