ASK ERNIE: “WHY NOT MORE FAT FREE FLAVORS?”

Ernie,
Why do you not offer more Fat Free/Sugar Free ice cream? My wife and I think the taste is fine and much better for health. Thanks!
I’m with you on that one Dennis. I’ve always been an advocate for expanding our Light Recipe and Fat Free/No Sugar Added line-ups and over the years we’ve added lots of new varieties. Of course, it’s not all because of my efforts. Public demand and acceptance for low fat varieties have played a role in our decision to add new light flavors.
It’s not fat free or no sugar added, but have you tried our Light Recipe Extreme Cookies ‘N Cream yet? A lot of people are probably tired of hearing me talk about it. It’s one of my favorites right now.
If it’s fat free you’re looking for, I would suggest our Fat Free Frozen Yogurt flavors such as Neapolitan, Chocolate Cherry Cordial, Chocolate Marshmallow, and Fudge Ripple. These flavors also offer an “Excellent Source of Calcium,” “Active Yogurt Cultures,” and, of course, are fat free. But I’m getting side tracked…
You might have noticed I called our one line “No Sugar Added” and not “Sugar Free”. This is a small difference, but an important one. Our No Sugar Added flavors contain a small amount of sugar from the lactose in the milk used to make the ice cream (however, no sugar is added). Lactose occurs naturally in milk and provides that slightly sweet taste. Now back to your original question.
The demand for fat free and sugar free flavors hasn’t been as high as our low fat flavors, but we have seen a boost in interest over the years. We’ve slowly increased our fat free (FF) and No Sugar Added (NSA) selection to include flavors like Cherry Fudge Ripple (FF/NSA), Dutch Chocolate (FF/NSA), Vanilla Bean (FF/NSA) and Peanut Brittle (NSA).
I’ll pass your suggestion along to our flavor development team. Trust me, they’re used to hearing me ask for new low fat and fat free flavors.
Thanks for your question!
Ernie

If you’ve got a technical question about the ice cream making process or some other inquiry about the nuances of America’s favorite treat, chances are Ernie has the answer. He might not be able to answer all questions, but he’ll try his best and some may be featured on the Ice Cream Journal.

THANKS TURKEY HILL
September 5th, 2007 at 7:56 pmThis is directed towards Carm Hodgins-
I am a TRUE BLUE Turkey Hill ice cream fan & while I understand your situation with being a diabetic dont you think that is a little unfair to assume that ALL Turkey Hill & any other brand of Ice Cream should be “sugar free” just to appease you or any other diabetic? What about the people who dont mind & even prefer sugar? Non Diabetics? I think that offering “sugar free” and regular Ice Creams to appease all customers from all walks of life is more towards the fair end of the spectrum. Again, I understand your situation, I have a friend who is diabetic but she doesnt feel I should suffer & be forced to eat ice cream without sugar just because she cannot..how fair is that? Im not diabetic!!! There is plenty of Ice Cream out there suited for people who are diabetic & for now, I guess that is the ice cream diabetics will have to eat even with its limited flavors to choose from. Sometimes its some things in life that we just cant do…this may be one of them. I would like to see Turkey Hill make more flavors geared to please your taste buds but to suggest they MAKE ALL THEIR ICE CREAM SUGAR FREE is ridiculous, one sided, unfair & a bit self centered. OMG, I cant beleive Im having this conversation about ice cream. smh@ me….Peace
September 5th, 2007 at 7:48 pmThere is nothing like Turkey Hill brand “Extreme Cookies-N-Cream” (Lite Recipe) in the world!! Nothing!! Seriously, I have been eating almost a whole tub A DAY!! I go & buy 5 tubs at a time!! Thank God I am hyperthyroid because I would be huge by now! I have been doing this routine now for 6 months or so & have only put on 4 LBS, *Go Figure*..Betcha it all catches up with me though!! I cant help it!! Im definetly addicted!! I cant even describe what the cookies taste like, they are undescribable I just tell people that if u LOVE chocolate like I do, then this is for you!! It is very very rich & the ice cream is so fluffy almost like whipped cream. Man, I spend like $25.00 a week on it!! LMAOOO Im spending a $100.00 a month on ice cream, what a stuffed pig I am!! Shame on u Turkey Hill for making such good ice cream…*wink*.
September 5th, 2007 at 7:38 pmKeep the fat free flavors coming. I love them all.
August 30th, 2007 at 11:43 amLove the Extreme Cookies N’ Cream! My girlfriend would love it if you could make that with a Vanilla base instead of Chocolate as well!
I think more people should start discovering Light Ice Cream - it isn’t what it ONCE was…at one time, Light meant light on taste too. That is no longer the case with any of the Light ice cream nowadays!
Also, the Skinny Minty is awesome….
August 24th, 2007 at 6:42 pmI tried the green tea & mango yogurt (fat free) Honestly I am a full fat ice cream eater but I must say I really did enjoy this frozen treat~
August 24th, 2007 at 12:03 pmHi: I never received any information as to why Turkey Hill Ice cream or any other can’t be totaly sugar Free not the kind that says no sugar added? Is it because it’s to much of a proceess to do it?
August 24th, 2007 at 7:43 amWe diabetics should not have any sugar of any amount.
Estimates say there are 30 millon Americans that don’t even know they are dibetic.
If there is any way to not have Sugar in Ice Cream I know Turkey Hill can do it.
JOAN - Feel free to check out the nutritional information posted for our FF/SF flavors here:
http://www.turkeyhill.com/products/fat-free-ice-cream.asp
If you need more information, just let us know!
LEE - We know what you mean about some people REFUSING to eat low fat ice cream (or any low fat products). The same is true of people who prefer our regular iced teas over our diet varieties.
We think you should try this: Buy a container of our Light Recipe Extreme Cookies & Cream ice cream (not fat free, just low fat) and then dish some up for your husband. Don’t tell him it’s low-fat and see if he notices. We’ll be he doesn’t and he’ll be surprised when you tell him about it.
August 22nd, 2007 at 9:02 amFat free or not,, I just found my new “Favorite Flavor of Turkey Hill Ice Cream”. I bought a half gal on Duetto lemon and OH MY GOODNESS,it is delicious! Apparently I’m not the only one who thought so, the entire container is empty already & was only opened last nite! lol
August 21st, 2007 at 9:07 pmMy problem is that my husband refuses to eat anything that says “low fat” or “fat free” or “sugar free”.
August 21st, 2007 at 6:27 pmhe says that he wants the real thing, and these choices are not it.
please continue to give him real vanilla, real chocolate, and real coffee ice cream.
I don’t know if it’s fat-free or the yogurt, but the chocolate covered pretzel is really good too! Keep making more flavors…I love the variety!
August 21st, 2007 at 5:25 pmThe ice cream issue is always a challenge for diabetics. My husband is diabetic and loves ice cream. He also had heart bypass surgery and so must watch both fat and sugar content. I have read so many labels and find that it is very difficult to find a product that fits both problems. We have tried several brands but the taste just isn’t there. I have not seen the Turkey Hill no fat/no sugar added in our shop. I will have to look again. Can you give me the sugar, carb and fat content?
August 21st, 2007 at 11:54 amOh my, Just last night my son and I went to T. Hill to get Death By Chocolate, but it was not available so we got the Light Extreme Cookies ‘n Cream, WOW it is GREAT! I have an ice cream machine and had made my own version of this a while back, well, hubby thought this WAS mine, loads of cookies and very chocolatey, this might beat Death by Choc now as my favorite. I will need more coupons now Ernie!!
August 21st, 2007 at 10:31 amI would love to see more fat free and low calorie versions of Turkey Hill because I eat it everyday. But don’t ever sacrifice taste for fat. So many times companies make tasteless fat free versions and it just isn’t the same. I would love to see a fat free rocky road.
August 21st, 2007 at 4:42 amI love your light recipe ice cream. It is very hard to tell that it is light ice cream and you have great flavors, like moose tracks.
August 20th, 2007 at 5:49 pmI haven’t had any of your light/ NSA or any of that yet…
August 20th, 2007 at 5:35 pmI just got braces on a few hours ago and then one popped off because they’re under so much pressure, so I had to go back at like 3:00. They hurt! and there’s not much food that I can eat. You’d be surprised- bread is harder than you think! On the up side, I can eat:
mashed potatoes, applesauce, and……
ICE CREAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yay! So I can maybe try the light (or whatever)ice cream.
ANNE - Fear not! Carb IQ is still being produced. We make Vanilla Bean, Choco Mint Chip, Chocolate and Peanut Butter Paradise. Distribution of our Carb IQ flavors has been scaled back a bit though, to match the slowed growth of the low-carb trend in general.
The best advice we can give you (and this goes for ANY ice cream flavor) is to ask your grocery store or freezer manager to stock it. You’d be surprised at how often they take customer requests to heart the next time they’re ordering product.
August 20th, 2007 at 4:35 pmMiss your Carb IQ ice cream. Why did you discontinue it? It was delicious!
August 20th, 2007 at 3:51 pmMy doctor always told me if your going to eat ice cream (in moderation) eat the real thing. The real deal is the best!!
August 20th, 2007 at 1:11 pmRight now I have a container of Fat Free Frozen Yogurt, Sugar Free and Light,,each, in my freezer, along with a container of Duetto lemon. Hey, I’m all for the fat free, light, etc. Less calories, the more we can eat! lol
August 20th, 2007 at 12:47 pmPersonally, I love the trend for “light” ice creams that stick to regular sugar but don’t use as much. I don’t care for artificial sugars. Although, I would like to see your light ice creams use more regular cane sugar and less high fructose corn syrup, but I know the latter is cheaper and easier to work with in some applications. I need to try that cookies & cream, though!
