WHO WANTS SOME LIGHT ICE CREAM?

Posted by: Turkey Hill Team

Not long ago, regular Ice Cream Journal reader Lee C. commented that her husband “refuses to eat anything that says “low fat” or “fat free” or “sugar free”.”

We suggested she try to fool him by offering up a bowlful of one of our Light Recipe flavors and see if he notices the difference. Although you can’t blame him for sticking to what he likes. It’s the same way with our iced teas—some people don’t mind the diet flavors and others drink nothing but the “regular stuff.”

Which leads us to this month’s ice cream poll about light ice cream eating habits (see the poll in the sidebar on the right). By the way, last month you proved the national averages wrong by admitting that 70 percent of you share your ice cream with your pet. Way to look out for the little guy!

I only eat the light stuff for the most part…but the good thing about Turkey Hill (and a few of their competitors) is that the “full-fat” line is still something you can indulge in every now and again and not feel too guilty about it; pretty much, a regular flavor of Turkey Hill is on par with what Haagen-Daaz or Ben & Jerry’s promotes as “Light”.

So, if I see an interesting Feature Flavor that is only made in the full-fat version, I may pick it up from time to time - just to get a taste of it.

(By the way - if you could ever make your Party Cake into a Light version, I think you’d have quite the winner!)

TERRI - We feel the same way. A blind taste test (similar to the old Coke vs. Pepsi tests in the 80s) would be fun, wouldn’t it?

LEE- The husband buys the ice cream? That does put a kink in your plan to sneak some Light Recipe into his bowl.

How ’bout this: If he buys vanilla or Moose Tracks (or any regular flavor with a Light Recipe alternative), take the regular ice cream out of its container and swap it with the Light ice cream (a little warm water around the outside of the container should help you make the switch). He won’t touch the light stuff (which is really the regular stuff) and you can just sit back and see if he notices!

I challenge anyone to give Turkey Hill light ice cream to anyone who will not eat light ice cream. There is no way that they can tell the difference. Try it! With all their yummy flavors, everyone would buy it if they tried it!I will have to end here and go get some!…………..

I’m only particular about eating the “regular” versions of certain flavors. If you’re gonna have ChocChip CookieDough, you might as well go all the way and have the regular stuff. ;) But I love trying all the interesting flavors in the “skinny” variety, and the frozen yogurts are so yummy!

And I know it’s off the “light” subject, but my roommate brought home the new limited edition “Baked Apple Dumpling” and WOW!!! Good job, Ernie!! You must have had a great time picking that one - please put it on the “regular” list! :)

I love Turkey Hill Light ice creams because not only are they healthier but they taste great. SO you don’t have to sacrifice flavor and goodness for less calories.

I prefer the lite or no-fat, sugar free, etc., ice creams,,,, but it depends on what flavors are available and what I’m in the mood for, as to what I buy. Right now, I have lite, sugar free & reg, all in my freezer and we all eat all of them

Like others have said, I like light ice cream if it’s made right. In my opinion it’s not necessarily the flavor that is lacking in many light ice creams so much as the texture just isn’t right - it’s more “ice” and less “cream”. The Turkey Hill light ice creams I’ve tried have been great though and if I hadn’t been the one to buy and serve them I’d have never guessed they weren’t regular old ice cream.

fool him?
I wish I could but he is the one who buys the ice cream and he is the one who dishes it out.
thanks for all the suggestions.
I agree with Jennifer,
I think that Turkey Hill does an excellent job in producing its light flavors.

I think that Turkey Hill does an excellent job in producing its light flavors. Skinny Minty is now my absolute favorite ice cream flavor and I never would have dreamed it was light if I wasn’t the one that purchased it!!!

Caroline -

I am just the opposite of your husband! I can’t stand coffee…but I LOVE coffee ice cream!

Speaking of which - TH should come out with a “Light” Ice Cream with a Coffee base!

Thanks for the good reviews everyone! Truth is, a lot of hard work goes into making our Light Recipe flavors. Formulating, creating, taste testing, reformulating, recreating, re-tasting. It’s a detailed process, but reading comments like this remind us that it’s worth it!

It’s “ALL” good!…Thanks for making such wonderful products that I know each time I spend my hard earned money on I will be satisfied.

I have tried other brands of light ice cream and they definately tasted different from regular ice cream. However, with Turkey Hill, unless you look at the package, you don’t know that you are eating light. I love all the light flavors TH flavors that I have tried so far.

My husband just does not like chemicals to sweeten his food. He has no problem with “Lite Ice Cream” since that is usually less butterfat unless it is a flavor he does not like. He is a little nuts since he drinks at least 2 cups (10 ounce size) of regular coffee but does not like coffee ice cream, figure that out.

I don’t mind eating fat free ice cream if it is made right. I didn’t respond to the pet question but my 2 cats LOVE Turkey Hill raspberry ice cream….just like I do!!

Exceelent job with ALL flavors in ALL varieties Turkey Hill Team. I often serve light or fat-free to dinner guests, without telling them it is not regular. No one has ever seem to tell the differece, including a friend who claims to be an “expert” in detecting any fat-free frozen treats (while eating a bowl of T.H. fat-free)!!!

I prefer fat free and my husband now accepts it as well. He loved the cherry chocolate cordial. I just made personal milk shakes using the Neapolitan fat free with one percent milk for my son and daughter-in-law when they visited the other day. They loved it! One had strawberry, the other chocolate and I had a vanilla shake. We loved the variety. So I say, keep those nonfat and lowfat flavors coming! You’re doing a great job.

Also I forgot to vote in the pet poll, but I do give my pooches ice cream. They love to eat the strawberry in my neopolitan.

If light ice cream is made right, I don’t mind it. In fact, I prefer it sometimes. It’s nice to see more companies, including Turkey Hill, are expanding their light ice cream varieties.
