ICE CREAM AFTER TONSIL REMOVAL – FACT OR FICTION?

Posted by: Turkey Hill Team

tonsils.jpgQuick, you’ve just had your tonsils removed, what’s the best food to eat to sooth that sore throat?

Most people would say ice cream. After all, soft foods are the prescription during the tonsillectomy recovery process and what better soft food is there than ice cream? Ice cream is also a “comfort food” and when you’re in the hospital (or recovering at home), comfort is of the utmost importance. It’s the perfect plan, right?

Now for the bad news: The whole “ice cream after tonsil removal” thing isn’t exactly the best medicine. In fact, most doctors advice against it. We know, the news was hard for us to hear too.

To double check this myth, we talked to Dr. Robert Belser, an otolaryngologist   (that’s an ear, nose and throat doctor) from Lancaster Otolaryngology.

Dr. Belser admitted to being a Turkey Hill ice cream fan, but recommended that patients avoid ice cream and other milk products for about two weeks after having their tonsils removed. The reason, according to Dr. Belser, is that milk products generate phlegm, which causes patients to cough or clear their throat and potentially aggravate the healing tissue and increase the chances of bleeding.

Instead of ice cream, the doctor advises patients to eat sherbet or freeze pops. Both options offer the same throat-soothing qualities of ice cream (although our sherbet, like most sherbets, does contain some milk). Thankfully, Turkey Hill makes sherbet. And don’t worry, two weeks without ice cream may seem like an eternity, but you can make up for lost time later!

Hi All
I am 39 and had my tonsils removed, deviated septum repaired and the soft palate uvula shortened (UPPP) last week Thursday. I had problems swallowing water or anything else right after the surgery and then was given some anti-inflammatory meds into the IV and that helped a lot the first night. Now I am on my 4th day after surgery and have been able to eat: Mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, white bread with butter (crust cut off), pea soup (strained like baby food) and gallons of water. I have had a bit of ice cream here at home. In the hospital there was a freezer full of ice/Popsicle and it did help a lot, albeit the mucous buildup was noticeable. Same with pudding based on milk. I am getting bored now at home. I have been written off work for 2 weeks but could go back the next few days the way I feel now. The pain isn’t half as bad as I thought it would be, but I am not out of the woods yet. Ice packs on my throat every few hours or so help. The pain relievers I was given was Ibuprofen 600mg so no heavy meds either. The one’s I was given to take home with me are still unopened on my table. Way too many side effects so I dare not take them. I will just use 2-3 200mg Ibuprofen every 6 hours with a lot of liquids and the ice packs. Hope everyone is feeling better. Oh by the way a question: I heard a lot about possible bleeding after the operation. I can tell in my nose if I am bleeding but my throat, I have no clue. How would you know? Signs? Thanks

hey my name is Melissa and no im not trying to be perfect on here hell im to messed up on painkillers omg number one the name of it is roxicet and it is fabulous liquid form of course but you feel no pain. i am 10 days into this after having tonsild removed and thanks doc for fibbing about the pain my ears have so much pressure and the swelling only makes it worse but ill live. i have developed a thrush form of infection from all the antibiotics and sterilization to say the least so i still cant go to semi solid form foods still ice cream popcicles and pudding im so tired of it all i want food!!!! i do not advise this surgery to people who have a hard time healing but it is good for kids under 14 but the ice cream helps and milk heat it up it doesnt leave the filmy stuff in your throat. but to all who yet to have it done good luck.

First of all, good God people! Can anyone here type a complete sentence?! Is everyone illiterate? And what’s with the spelling? Are you just mashing the buttons on your keyboard? Are you even trying to spell words correctly? Jesus Christ people, take some grammar lessons.

Ok…now that I’ve vented about that, I wanted to say that I just got my tonsils out 7 days ago. It actually hurts more now than it did for the first few days after the surgery. And as far as the ice cream goes, it is pretty much the ONLY thing that doesn’t make my throat hurt.

I am 31 and I did mine 2 days ago, I read so much about it I was scared to death, well I made it,I need the swelling to go down I want steak and shrimp.when I take the med there is no pain except if I swallow. and for some reason pain comes every 4hrs and meds say take every 6hrs.Also feels like there is nasty coating on my tounge which a scrapper is not helping. But I think I could do this 10 times again, haha don’t mean to show off.Get well all of you.

I had my toncills out on the 12th of semptember. I am 24 years old and i have to say that it was the worst pain ever. I thought delivering two babies was bad. I found that the cold foods were horrible on my throut. I agree with the doctors, i found by personal experience that ice cream was the worst thing to eat becuse of the phlem.. It is now day 13 and the back of my throut still is uncomfortable. It feels like it has bad bruising.. it hurts to yawn.. anyways my advice is to do what you can handle but i used ice packs on my throut and i thought that was a big help and warm soup.. Good luck to all….

I had my tonsils removed last week, this is day 7, and I’m 22 years old. So far it’s been horrible, and today was the worst of all! Apparently I had very large blood vessels running through my tonsils so cautery was not an option so the stitches are rubbing and scratching my already painful throat… The ear aches are making me crazy as well. So far the best thing I’ve found is a warm/HOT steamy shower to moisten my throat and hot chicken broth… frozen products are not helping one bit! Thin mashed potatoes are awesome too. This was not the diet I had in mind, already lost eleven pounds!

Hello!
I’m 38 and I got my tonsils out on Aug. 8th. I thought I was not going to be able to talk right away, but I was wrong. I was suppose to take 10 days off but only took two days and went back to work. I’m a chef. I have stayed away from all milk products. I ate cold items the first 3 days and warm foods after that.

I had my tonsils removed earlier this morning, and it has been pretty bad but not as terrible as some people have made it sound. I’m 21, and they say that the older you are the harder it is to recover, but I think the older you are the more pain you can deal with so it balances out. As far as eating goes, all I have drank is iced water that is just fine, popsicles are ok but the sugar kinda clogs my throat. Pudding was pretty bad because of the dairy. However, theres a product out call fruit chillers that are basically frozen fruit puree’s, the mango is delicious and they make my throat feel great!

I had my tonsils and adnoids removed two weeks ago and I still am unable to eat the foods i wish i could. Ice cream was probably the worst food i could possibly have put in mouth. I didn’t like how it felt on my throat after the surgery. I prefered warmer liquids like chicken broth. That’s about all I ate until i could handle those Ramon Noodles. Room temp sweet tea is really good too. That’s all I drank. But for the cold stuff, I just stayed away from it!

hey, im 11 and ive just got my toncils out about 9 days ago and ice cream makes your throat really cloggie and it is really not good. I personaly think that milkshakes are better but remember to keep your throat moist or it will bleed like mine did, i was in hospital for 4 more days and 3 more nights on a drip and trust me its not good when you have a needle in your arm 20 4 7. So i seguest that you should have ice blocks and milkshake and try not to dehighdrate

thanks for reading my comment

I got my tonsils removed yesterday morning and let me tell you….I am a pretty strong guy and it hurts like hell, so since we did not have ice cream at that time my mom decided to cut and mix little pieces of cantaloupe and crushed ice together and it seemed to do the trick. Also gatorade is a great product to drink since it has salt and sugar in it.
good luck to all

I am 13yrs.old.I got my tonsils and adnoids out thursday the 5th. Its been 5 very painful days.Haven’t got a lot of sleep because of the severe pain in my ears and throat. Milk Shakes at 3:00am are my usual. Pop sicles are better though. I probably eat 8 a day. Gatorade has been my all time favorite though. Drinking atleast a gallon a day. Sweet tea with honey is extraordinary though! I have been able to eat a few soft foods. Soup,Mashed poatatos, and mac&cheese are brillant.

*NO KETCHUP
OR ORANGE JUICE!

Hopefully this helps!

I had my tonsils removed here recently, and I’m on my 7th day after healing and I still can’t manage to eat anything even semi-solid. I’ve found that the cold foods hurt worse and that actually warm foods are more soothing to my throat. But for some reason everything tastes really bad and all sweet things taste the worst of all. So ice cream has really been off limits for me all around, which really bites, cause I was looking forward to eating all the ice cream I wanted after my tonsilectomy. :(

I just got my tonsils removed two days ago, and let me tell you worse pain I have ever felt. I tried to eat ice cream and for some reason it just didnt taste good. Now popsicles on the other hand are the winners. Orange cream and fudge pops. I have been drinking tons of water and ice cubes. Unfortunately can’t eat much more than that. Food sounds so good but I attempted mashed potatoes and while they tasted good, it hurt eating them and I bled a but after

My 3 kids just had their tonsils out! I was out of my mind when I scheduled the 3 at the same time.

I am exhausted running from bed to bed. Hopefully this will end soon!!

The only rest that I get is when I bring them thier Duetto!!

They say the the Lemon Duetto is the best thing that they can eat!

I am being very lax with them. I usually give them a single scoop, but they say they need more. I’ve been to my local Shop-Rite and bought the last 4 Lemon Duetto. I may have to race out to Pathmark.

Thanks for the wonderful product!!!

Sherry Zbar wrote:

I must dispute your scientific findings.

My father, brother and nephew were all otolaryngologists (Ear, Nose & Throat MDs.) When I was a child, my father performed more than a dozen tonsillectomies daily in his office that was in our house. Now, ice cream ingestion was a necessity to proper healing and rapid pain relief in those days. Why the controversy? Because we didn’t have TURKEY HILL ice cream in those days with it’s thick, creamy, extraordinarily satisfying taste. Instead, ice cream was watery and thin. The chill was what relieved the raw surgical throat and sputum production was not a concern as Turkey Hill was not available.

THIS, actually, is the explanation for my never having had my tonsils removed. No Turkey Hill ice cream??? No surgery!

I hope this clears the air – and the palate.

Best remedy for tonsils, if you can eat ice cream,(the pain ouch!) go the Duetto way. This way you get a little bit of ice cream and that delicious ice in all those great flavors. But in reality anyone who can eat anything after that…your good!!

KATH – Good advice. And remember, crumbling your cookies over ice cream doesn’t count!

JACQUELINE – You had your tonsils taken out twice? Ouch and ouch.

STEFANIE – Almost. It doesn’t work on athlete’s foot, but it sure is fun to sit there with your feet in two tubs of Vanilla Bean.

This could be trouble. If my husband ever has to have his removed he would expect TH as I and my grown children had. He would feel cheated but hopefully he will never need them removed since he has had them for 67 years. If my grandchildren ever need the operation I think they could handle the sherbet.

I was told, also, that ice cream is not the treat of choice after having tonsils removed. Ok, so you have to go a week or two with no TH ice cream,,,, just think how much more you’ll appreciate it when you CAN have it again!

I do remember the ice cream, but the pain was too great for me to eat it.
It seemed totally unfair!

Kath wrote:

I knew ice cream wasn’t the way to go when two of my children had their tonsils removed. As a matter of fact, their otolaryngologist……what a mouthful………..suggested putting crackers, chips or cookies beside their bed because it would help keep the phlegm from the throat area and they would heal faster……..It worked! His reference point was when he and his twin had their tonsils out…He ate chips and crackers and his brother ate ice cream. He was up and about much sooner than his brother was!
