IF YOU LIKE SEAFOOD, YOU SHOULD LOVE THIS…RIGHT?
Posted by: Turkey Hill Team
Since we’re on the topic of new Duetto flavors (two people suggested peach and watermelon — both great ideas!), we thought we’d take a look at the place where unusual ice cream is pretty much the norm. Of course, we’re talking about Japan. To be fair, Japan has many, many very tasty varieties of ice cream, but some are, well, you can judge for yourself.
We found a website that has a short list of odd-ball flavors and some descriptions of each, which we’ve shared below. A few sound potentially tasty. Others…not so much.
CACTUS ICE CREAM - “It is smooth and refreshing with a taste that must be like drawing water from a cactus after being parched in a desert for days.”
CHICKEN WING ICE CREAM - “Nagoya is famous for its poultry, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the taste of this ice cream is best described as foul. It actually tastes like a fried chicken wing.”
CRAB ICE CREAM - “Though not everybody’s preferred ice cream flavour, this is a dish worth getting the claws into.”
EEL ICE CREAM - “Surprisingly, the smooth taste is quite palatable, even if the thought of what’s being eaten is not quite as tasty.”
OCTOPUS ICE CREAM - “Want to tantalize the taste buds with a tentacle? If so, Octopus Ice Cream is the go.”
WASABI ICE CREAM - “While its tingling taste makes a delightful addition to raw fish, wasabi’s tangy flavor also makes for a surprisingly edible ice cream.”

If you’ve got a technical question about the ice cream making process or some other inquiry about the nuances of America’s favorite treat, chances are Ernie has the answer. He might not be able to answer all questions, but he’ll try his best and some may be featured on the Ice Cream Journal.

December 19th, 2007 at 8:07 pmAt A MUSHROOM Festival they were serving Mushroom ice cream an mushroom& pumpkin flavor… people were saying it was good.. since I like mushrooms I would also try those flavors!!
November 9th, 2007 at 4:55 pmThanks for letting us know how others enjoy their ice cream,,,, but I’ll stick to “normal” flavors like those we enjoy now! I just can’t imagine fish flavored ice cream! YUCK
November 8th, 2007 at 9:31 amI’ve had the Green Tea Ice Cream, and it was good (not my ‘favorite’, but, good.) Hershey Chocolate makes a candy bar with green tea creme filling - excellent if you like green tea! (And if you read the past comments on Lima Bean Ice Cream, it wasn’t bad, either)
November 7th, 2007 at 9:25 pmDani I love the Fortune cookie ice cream idea!! since I love fortune cookies I like to save the fortunes!I say thats a great idea for a limited flavor for the Chinese New Year!!
November 7th, 2007 at 4:34 pmHow about Turkey Hill putting out something like Toasted Almond on a stick-it seems like the OTHER company puts their’s out in few and far between locations-I think with some slight variation to protect other’s patent (if there is one) would really fly in the Turkey Hill marketing areas.
November 7th, 2007 at 7:20 amI guess I old fashion remembering the Good Humor man in his open truck with the bells and the Toasted Almond ice cream pop (NY) Those fishy flovors don’t send me. Next you will come out with Lox (smoked salmon) ice cream packaged between 2 halves of a bagel. No way.
By the way does anyone know how to get frozen ice cream cones crisp again.
November 7th, 2007 at 12:58 amJust curious. What is the cost of the eel ice cream…since smoked eel runs about $60.00 a pound. Also, most of us are familiar with coffee ice cream, and don’t think of it as unusual, yet many local japanese restaurants offer green tea ice cream which most people think is quite unusual. Thnks THT for giving us such good variety and superb flavor choices.
November 6th, 2007 at 11:06 pm…with a fortune printed on the bottom of the container!
November 6th, 2007 at 8:23 pmI’d love to have a big bowl of Turkey Hill Wasabi Ice Cream chasing my sushi dinner rather than that silly little fortune cookie…
OOOH! Fortune Cookie Bits Ice Cream!
November 6th, 2007 at 8:22 pmI’m not to sure about these fish flavors.
November 6th, 2007 at 7:53 pmwhen I was a little girl, my mother always said that you should never mix milk products with fish.
she always thought that it would make you sick to mix them.
so I think I will skip them.
Popcorn flavored ice cream does sound good as would soda flavors. I don’t think I want the fish flavored ones.
November 6th, 2007 at 6:48 pmI would try the garlic flavor ice cream, not the seafood ones. We enjoy all the specialitys of the month and the other flavors, also. Turkey Hill is the only ice cream we buy.
November 6th, 2007 at 5:37 pmStefanie, I tried a “Buttered Popcorn” ice cream flavor at an ice cream vendor (don’t want to say the name, but it rhymes with “Baggie Boo”). It was good!
November 6th, 2007 at 2:24 pmWASABI an CACTUS would be the two flavors I would like to try.At the Gilroy garlic festival the flavor is of course garlic I hope to go one year an give that a try!!!
November 6th, 2007 at 11:55 amI don’t think so. I love my ice cream after the meal, its like having 2 meals and no dessert! There’s nothing to look forward to. I’m not up for change I guess. Give me the real thing!!!
November 6th, 2007 at 10:07 amWow these flavors are strange. I would love to see a popcorn ice cream!
November 6th, 2007 at 5:18 amThe flavors sound interesting, but I hope you guys at Turkey Hill stick to the flavors we all love.
November 5th, 2007 at 11:01 pmI’m sure if Disney had an Ice Cream tasting area like the Soda’s around the world, we’d all have to have a taste! I know they sound gross, but you become intrigued to find out what such things taste like. Who know’s, someone may really like them, and think that peach, or chocolate chip is gross. We never know!
November 5th, 2007 at 5:03 pmWow, I love feature flavors, but those are a bit out there.
When will you guys have next year’s feature flavors calendar out?
