Some of the most popular flavors of ice cream were only invented a few decades ago, which is weird because they’re so good and it’s hard to imagine life without them. Take Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough for instance. That heavenly concoction was invented in 1991.
Or Cookies ‘n Cream. In 1983, that flavor was invented using real Oreo cookies and quickly climbed to number five on the list of best-selling ice cream flavors. Its meteoric rise in popularity makes Cookies ‘n Cream the fastest growing new flavor in ice cream history!
TODAY’S PRIZE: Ice cream (even fake ice cream) can be used as a learning tool for young children. With that in mind, today’s gift is the Smart Snacks Rainbow Color Cones. The kit comes with one cone and eight brightly colored soft rubber scoops of ice cream which tots can stack on top of each other to learn colors and develop fine motor skills.

If you’ve got a technical question about the ice cream making process or some other inquiry about the nuances of America’s favorite treat, chances are Ernie has the answer. He might not be able to answer all questions, but he’ll try his best and some may be featured on the Ice Cream Journal.
Oatmeal Raisin Cookie dough ice cream was better than chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream in my opinion!
What a unique prize today’s giveaway is!
That’s not surprising, we have better technology to creat more exotic flavors. Market research gives companies a better idea of what the public wants.
c’mon-rubber scoops of ice cream?! why can’t we give them real scoops of ice cream?? The tots might get messy but they will have a better time-especially if one of the scoops is chocolate-ok-maybe cookies and cream-I do like that-I am sure we could find enough different colors for them to learn
with all the unique flavors out there why is plain vanilla always the biggest seller?
Recent data gathered by the International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA) shows that low-fat ice cream is the fastest growing ice cream category for 2006. I’ll stick with full-fat ice cream, thank you.
I love both cookies n cream and cookie dough!!
I’m glad Turkey Hill is still making those yummy flavors: Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough is one of my personal favorites. I do like some of the new concoctions, but I still lean toward the old stand-bys. My granddaughter would certainly love your ice cream cone prize. Thanks for a great web site.
That scooper toy would be such a gem for my granddaughter who is 2. I give her cones to play with and she has little beanie bags that she stacks on top to resemble ice cream. She loves to play that game.
I’m still a raspberry fan. I was in Shoprite yesterday and TH was on sale. I quickly used one of my 2008 calendar coupons since they had the raspberry at the time. Now I am a happy camper having my favorite flavor and saving an extra dollar with the coupon.
So these newfangled inventions have to take the place of oldies but GOODIES like Butter Brickle??? Oh please please pulleeze bring it back!!!
Wow, and I have never tried either of those two flavors.
I just have to laugh at this one! I rarely get any time at the computer. Tonight, I went & got some ice cream & decided to catch up on email. Guess what I am scooping into my mouth when I’m reading today’s comments — Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. How funny is that??
Cookies ‘n Cream is like two treats in one !
Oatmeal Raisin Cookie Dough sounds interesting, Joanne. Of course, I still couldn’t give up my Choco Chip Cookie Dough… There’s just something about it that I love so much!
Imagine my surprise when i got home today and found an envelope full of Turkey Hill ice cream coupons in the mail! Fantastic. And i think its buy one get one free this week at the supermarket. double cool…!!!
I am not really a cookie dough or cookies and cream fan myself. My husband likes both. I love chocolate chip. We like the light varieties the best and eat it like its going out of style.
I want to thank you for the calendar. it just arrived today.
I love the photos and the coupons.
thank you.
This would be great fun!
Wow a turkey hill calendar? I wish I had one??? Or more to give as gifts. Butter Brickle? I haven’t heard that in a long time. I think I loved that when I was a kid. Pineapple upside down cake ice cream sounds really yummy to try too. I get hungry every time I check this blog.
I have the same question as Barry above, how come Vanilla still reigns as queen of the flavors when there are so many other flavors out there. People need to spice their lives up a bit one scoop at a time…
Maybe vanilla is favorite to add alot of other toppings. Make your own “favorite”
try vanilla with a couple of cherries and chocolate syrup–hence chocolate covered cherry—
Funny things about these flavors. I use to add chocolate chip cookies or oreos to my ice cream If only I knew what I know now!
I recieved a calendar this week as well. Thanks! Love those coupons in it too!
I wonder what the list of oldest original flavors are. Not sure who won the book, but i’m sure they know!! chocolate is still my heaven, with any topping mixed in!
fir the kids
Doesn’t that cow get tired of running through everyone’s computer? Or are there lots of cows, taking turns? Perhaps Lancaster cows are especially strong and hearty!
Regardless of all those special combinations, my tastebuds tell me the best flavors are vanilla and chocolate.
Moose tracks is my favorite! I don’t think that was invented too long ago!
Vanilla may also be most popular because of all the kinds of vanilla that are available, like vanilla, French vanilla, vanilla bean
cookies & cream rock
Okay, I’ll admit I went out today and bought More Turkey Hill …dutch chocolate and now we are going to try mint chocolate chip. This is to keep in line with the twelve ice creams of Christmas!
Professional ice cream tasters have a great future. Thanks for your efforts from all of us who eat ice cream.
OK, this is the one prize I would absolutely love since I have a 3 month old daughter. What a great toy!
my grandson would love this prize!!! He loves to eat ice cream cones and we have lots of pictures!! He will just turn 2 and i believe his favorite is chocolate marshmallow!!
My daughters love cookie dough and I love cookies and cream. Dad adores French vanilla, so when they’re on sale I MUST buy all three flavors.
who’s with me…
GO GRAPE NUT ICE CREAM!!!
My mother always told me not to eat the raw cookie dough! And maybe that’s why I’m not very fond of this flavor. I’m partial to Rum Raisin.
For the 12 days before Christmas I eat a new flavor of Turkey Hill…Then in January, I eat Turkey Hill Lite…LOL what fun!!!
All I can say is YUMMY!
Oh how neat! My nephew would love these!
As for flavors…..I prefer chocolate or a fudge swirl. The hubby prefers the Cookies-n-Cream.
The kids would have fun with these for sure
Those 2 are wildly popular, hard to believe they’re so “young” in the world of ice cream
both chocolate chip cookie dough and cookies and creme are in my freezer right now. My daughter will finish both this weekend.
Cookies and Cream is a great flavor, especially if ya add a little hot fudge, some whipped cream, and of course cherries ~ YUMMY!
Are there raw eggs in the cookie dough in the ice cream?
Mmmm Coooooookies ‘n Cream!
the kids will love it
“Oatmeal Raisin Cookie dough ice cream was better than chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream in my opinion!”
Now, that sounds great!
I’ll stick with the basic flavours like vanilla, peach, spumoni or rum raisin.
Oh, I do love some cookies ‘n cream!
Its never to early for Ice Cream toys! They can play with their ice cream as mommy eats the real thing
“So these newfangled inventions have to take the place of oldies but GOODIES like Butter Brickle??? Oh please please pulleeze bring it back!!!”
Another good one I haven’t had in years! Or butter pecan.
There is nothing like coffee ice cream..plain or in combination. Coffee with nuts and chocolate…now that’s the perfect combo.
I love Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough! It’s the greatest flavor
Every time I think I’ve found my new “Favorite” flavor of Turkey Hill ice cream,, I find a different flavor in my grocer’s freezer, I take it home and try it and I have a NEW favorite flavor! lol
Chocolate Chip Cookies Dough is one of my favorites.
We love your ice cream. It is so tasty and I have not chosen a favorite yet. Every one of the flavors we have tried is great.
Chocolate Chip Cookies Dough & Cookies n Cream are among the best flavors!
Humm, makes you wonder what took so long in finding such divine tastes? I have to say though, your feature flavors are the bomb. I really miss the coconut cream pie flavor. Will it ever return????
The rainbow cone sounds really cute and I know my granddaughter would love to play with this one. One of my favorites in the ice cream is the black cherry and vanilla. I’m happy with any of the flavors tho. Keep them coming. I started using my coupons from the calendar. They certainly get used fast.
Those 2 flavors were favorites for my kids when they were growing up. They ate them at their friends’ houses, then asked me to buy them the same kind. I’m glad I did!
I CAN SEE IT NOW, MY 5 GRANDCHILDREN FIGHTING OVER THIS GREAT CONE KIT.
You know I’m the one with 6 kids and they all love ice cream. I work in a supermarket and I am the one who buys the ice cream. I feel so boring now, because cookie dough is also what I buy the most. Vanilla def. sells the most, but everyone is different. What sounds awesome to me might sound disgusting to you. Thanks Turkey Hill for making tons of flavors. My only complaint is that I hang the ice cream tags when they go on sale and there’s so many flavors that I’m freezing by the time I get done. :O. My favorite…Choc. cov. pretzel. Yummy.
my birth year is when cookies and cream was invented, AWESOME!
I can’t wait to see what new flavors Turkey Hill will come up with in the coming year. It is hard to find my favorite, because I love them all.
how can there be a favorite flavor? Just when I finally decide I can’t live withoout one, they come up with an even better one. It’s real hard to make a choice anymore!
I’m not a big fan of cookie dough ice cream, although it’s my older son’s favorite and I will buy it when he visits. But I’ll eat chocolate chip anything. Still, I prefer chocolate chip ice cream without cookie dough.
Cookie Dough Ice Cream has always been a favorite of our family!!
My grandchildren would LOVE that prize. I too love Cookies n Cream!
Blessings for Happy “Holy”days!
I really like the Banana Split but don’t find it very often.
If you want a calendar, call their customer service department at 1-800-MY-DAIRY after 8 AM.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year everyone that reads these blogs. I still love all flavors of turkey hill ice cream. Cannot get it – unless I travel over 30 miles. Please put in the south closer to me!
I can’t believe the chocolate chip cookie dough flavor has been around for that long. I love it believe it reminds me of baking cookies, which I really enjoy. The flavor is just so home-made tasting. Gosh, the years are just flying by.
ITS ALWAYS FUN TRYING NEW FLAVORS. THE NICE THING IS, THAT THEY ARE ALL GOOD!
Bring back your peanut butter banana flavor that you once had as a feature flavor
The colors are great and interesting… but the flavors of your ice cream is the best.
I remember in collegecookie dough ice cream was a “new” thing! My kids love it.
cookie dough is one of the best flavors of ice cream!
While my favorite flavor is coffee, my store rarely carries it, or much of anything else other than the traditional. So, I tried something new and had some raspberry chocolate chunk recently. Excellent, I highly recommend, as well as the chocolate marshmallow. To be honest, kind of sick of that cookie dough stuff…
I have 14 grandchildren and they all have a favorite flavor. Today we are having a birthday party for the 2nd oldest granddaughter who turns 17 and her favorite is COOKIE DOUGH. But no matter what flavor we love them all. Todays prize would be great for the crowd. They would have a ball.
It’s enough to make you want to leave the house right now and go buy some ice cream. My husband loves vanilla bean and I love coffee and mint chocolate chip, but we always try new flavors.
I love trying the new flavors that come out!
There is not a flavor I haven’t tried!
Turkey Hill just keeps getting better and better!
Chocolate chip cookie dough IS my favorite, along with good old chocolate. It’s good to blend the old flavors with the new ones and have new, popular favorites.
I like pistachio and butter pecan.
Stacking toys are great for kids. I always bought them as gifts for them.
These ice cream themed gifts are great!! Keep them coming
When it comes to ice cream, Turkey Hill is in the front, taking big steps to surprise all of us that love ice cream.
The rubber cones are a cute idea.
Not just for the little ones, if your crafty there are many things to do with them. Just sit down and think about it while enjoying a bowl of your favorite flavor ice cream.
Hi – just wanted to wish everyone a Happy Holiday and enjoy Turkey Hill everyday.
I seem to remember Chocolate cookie dough ice cream first appearing in the store and taking it home to try it. I had no idea it was just invented, I guess I figured I hadn’t noticed it before! I have been making Christmas cookies but nothing beats that ice cream flavor!
We need a campaign to inform Americans that we are behind in the ice cream race. How can we let the Kiwis beat us? . Hey how about kiwi ice cream?
I never saw that anyplace.in +
Keep coming up with new flavors Turkey Hill. Love to try them
I always forget about those two flavors when I shop for ice cream. Guess what’s going on my shopping list!
I mix my favorites – vanilla fudge, cherry vanilla fudge and top it off with chocolate cherry cordial. Can’t wait for the weekend.
In my opinion, some of the best flavors have been introduced in recent years. Anything with “add-ins” (cookies, candy, peanut butter, etc.) is great.
Cookie dough is one of my favorites.
even the littlest child would like these scoop toys. BUT, they surely would enjoy THE REAL THING. i know i would ! when babies and little children are eating ice cream the ;ool pn their faces are pure bliss !
in my blog i meant to say ” the look on their faces is pure bliss “, however thinking of ice cream gave me a brain rush that interfered with my fingers sorry.
I love cookies and cream.
As a kid I remember breaking cookies over ice cream and also apple sauce. Now I can buy ice cream with the cookies already in it. Amazing!
Looking forward to a new year with surprising new flavors (and old favorites continuing to come from Turkey Hill. Thanks for the joy!
I LOVE my calendar and coupons! Thanks! My 17 year old saw it and promptly sat down with it to drool over all the ice cream possibilities!
Rubber scoops of ice cream!!!! Geez. Sounds like something my dogs would like to chew up. We prefer the real thing in our house. Even tots will think thats dumb.
Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough is the favorite of 2 of my grandchildren. The rest of us can’t decide on a favorite so I buy a different flavor every time along with the cookie dough when they come to visit and no one is ever disappointed!
Merry Christmas to all.
I wish that “Turkey Hill” had a few of their most popular flavors in a sugar- free version. I’m trying to watch my sugar content- not because of a medical condition but to eat healthier. My favorite flavor,Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup, has over 10 grams of sugar per serving so I don’t buy it very often.
Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough was never one of my favorites, until I tried Jana”s C.C.C.D now I’m hooked (but only on Jana’s) And Cookie’s and Cream
is gret too.
With 3 young children we’d LOVE this prize.
We love cookies and cream. We can’t believe how recently it came into existance.
I love this flavor.
Can you do it in low-fat? Please…
Deb P
What would be neat is to have elementary school kids come up with new “flavors”, like the way Crayola did with crayons. Then have the company put some together and see what happens. We are all kids when it comes to ice cream!
I have never been fond of that flavor…my personal new flavor favorite is strawberry cheesecake!!
My teens enjoy the “newer” flavors. I still enjoy the old favorites…coffee, chocolate….and butter brickle!!
Turkey Hill is a family celebration!
my favorites are chocolate chip and mocha.
My kids are used to eating Turkey Hill vanilla (with stuff on top), banana split, and mint chocolate chip. So when we were in Colorado and couldn’t get Turkey Hill and needed *one* flavor, we tried another brand’s cookies and cream. Now I have another favorite Turkey Hill flavor to pick up at the store.
I never did understand the attraction of chocolate chips in ice cream.. Give me a good chocolate marshmallow or almond any day.
Sounds like a great educational toy.
I have a cold sore (’tis the season) and eating ice cream is one of the only soothing things that I can get near it. Any flavor will do.
I am a contributor to the rise in sales of low-fat ice cream. It’s so good you can’t tell the difference and it makes for a smart indulgence.
Nothing beats chocolate chip, and in fact, anything with chocolate in it is tops.
good toy for my 11-month old
In the twelve days of Ice cream: On the eighth day of Christmas my true love gave to me, Dutch chocolate with a Christmas medley….
Kids love ice cream, a nice way of teaching colors.
Oreo Cookie ice cream is so delicious.
I like cookies n cream because the cookies are so finely ground up. It has a smooth texture and you don’t have to worry about chomping down on something hard. Even with this ice cream I may have a cookie or two.
I agree with some posters that if there are so many varieties out their why is vanilla still number 1. Unless so many people buy all these varietys and they help keep their count low that vanilla can stay on top
HOW ABOUT PRODUCING A PEACH FLAVORED ICE CREAM?
I liked the cookies and cream ice cream more than the cookie dough ice cream. But I wonder why some people say that cookies and cream is not good. I like it very much.
there is no bad ice cream— but i like vanilla the best
my all time favorite is the ice cream sandwicj…now Turkey Hill has the little devils in chocolate and vanilla…woo hoo!!!!
The kids love ice cream, cones, colors, sprinkles, anything….and they’d eat it every day if we would let them!
Cookies and Cream and Cookie Dough are two of my favorites, that’s for sure.
I’ve tried lots of other brands, but Turkey Hill’s the BEST!!!!!I love when it goes on sale.
I wonder when Chocolate Peanut Butter cup was invented and when it had anything to do with the Reese’s Cup candy.
I am sure my grandkids would have fun with the cones should I win today. However, I am really hoping to win the year’s supply of real Turkey Hill ice cream. I plan to share the real thing with my grandkids and also with the Awana children and staff that we work with each Wednesday. They’ll love it!
I prefer chocolate chip cookie dough. I
never really care for Oreo’s. They are over rated.
HAVE A MERRY CHRISTMAS – EAT LOTS OF TH ICE CREAM
never met a flavor I didn’t like right out of the container
Just to celebrate the popularity of Cookies n Creme I think I’ll have an extra scoop tonight!
It wood be great if German Chocolate Cake would become a staple
the best part of my weekly grocery shopping is picking out what flavor ice cream to try. sometimes i stick with old favorites, but occasionally i’ll get brave and try something new. i was really happy when i tried the duetto flavors they are now my current favorites.
I think the Rainbow color cones would be great for kids. I like a lot of flavors of ice cream, but Fried Ice Cream is very good.
There is not a bad ice cream out there.
Just found chocolate Moose tracks (lite) that is the best yet….
I am not a big fan of cookie dough ice cream.
I like cherry-vanilla the best.
It makes you wonder what other great flavor haven’t been invented yet! You can never have enough ice-cream…
I cannot wait to see what new flavors are on the horizon .I think all stores should carry all flavors!!!
I’ve never tried that flavor but will in the very near future!!
Today’s prize would be great to use with the 2 year old grandson we babysit. We still enjoy vanilla ice cream. There are so many possible toppings to use on it.
Still waiting for some ice cream maker to make strawberry marshmellow again. We had this in our town for a while, the dairy went out of business, and haven’t had it since. Can you imagine, chocolate marshmellow ice cream but with strawberry ice cream instead of chocolate. Hope some dairy will try to duplicate. It was really good.
Elaine, You never heard of Peaches and Cream.
You Scream I scream we want ice cream, Have ya noticed people in assited living or nursing homes still want ice cream , no matter how old you get you never lost the ability to have the urge to want ice cream, and vanila, choclate or strawberry is still there all time favorites.
We are a 4 carton a week home and vanilla always tops the list. Then we pick in order which flavors are next to be chosen.
I don’t like too many things mixed into my ice cream. Cookie dough, for example is not for me. I ENJOY peaches and cream!
I still don’t like anything to come in the way of that smooth ice cream taste. The exception is fruit or chocolate.
My favorite is now the Pineapple Upside Down Cake! Too bad it was only temporary – if I had known that at the time, my freezer would have been filled up with it!
Not a fan of cookie dough ice cream, would rather have the cookies!
I am still a Coffee Ice Cream girl
FACT: TURKEY HILL LOVES ME
FACT: THEY WANT ME TO BE A GRAND PRIZE WINNER
FICTION: I AM A HOPELESS DREAMER
You never know since chocolate chip cookie dough was invented may Vanilla ice cream w/white Chocolate and raspberry would be a terrific new flavor.
Not surprised by its popularity!
Just sent hubby out for some Turkey Hill ice cream
hey, they dishes are just wonderful;;;nice prize for some one
