ICE CREAM WITH A RETRO TWIST
Posted by: Turkey Hill Team
This is it. The 12th day of ice cream. Thanks to all of you for celebrating the holidays and ice cream with us during these last two weeks. It’s been a lot of fun chatting with everyone!
For all of our new readers, we hope you decide to check in on a regular basis. To help you stay in touch, feel free to sign up on the right to have new Ice Cream Journal entries automatically emailed to you. After today we’ll go back to our normal posting schedule of about three entries per week and, while we won’t give out prizes with every new entry, we will continue our usual tradition of giving away prizes to a few readers at the end of each month.
Speaking of giving things away, the winner of the biggest prize in our 12 Days of Ice Cream celebration will be chosen tomorrow. That’s when we look back on all of the comments left during the 12 Days of Ice Cream celebration and choose one – completely at random – to win the one year’s supply of Turkey Hill ice cream. Good luck and Merry Christmas!
TODAY’S PRIZE: Some people think we saved the best for last, and maybe we did. What can we say? These aluminum ice cream bowls are just plain cool. They’re admittedly retro, and remind us of something grandma used to have in her cupboard, along with the matching aluminum cups, of course.

If you’ve got a technical question about the ice cream making process or some other inquiry about the nuances of America’s favorite treat, chances are Ernie has the answer. He might not be able to answer all questions, but he’ll try his best and some may be featured on the Ice Cream Journal.

Love your ice cream,dave
January 5th, 2008 at 8:15 amI remember getting a drink of KoolAid or Funny Face at my neighbor’s house in metal cups. I was really jealous of the neat stuff they had. Everything we used came out of a laundry detergent box. Anyone remember that?
December 29th, 2007 at 9:27 amHaha those ice cream bowls are awesome!
December 28th, 2007 at 6:56 pmWould love to eat ice cream out of those bowls… but only Turkey Hill! the one and only!
December 28th, 2007 at 12:43 pmMy girls and I have ice cream just about every nite - no kidding. Its our little family tradition. NO matter what the mood in the house, or the schedule, or who has to be where, we have ice cream in our tried & true ice cream mugs. The “retro” bowls are great.
December 27th, 2007 at 8:32 pmIce cream is the best food invention. I eat it when I’m happy, depressed, excited, worried, tired, energetic, at home, on a trip, when it’s hot, when it’s cold (outside), with my family, alone, and in any room of the house (really)! The bowls are very nice but I want the year’s supply!!
December 27th, 2007 at 7:35 pmIt’s been fun - just wish you could give a free half-gallon to all who participated! That would have been great! I’d be glad to share.
December 27th, 2007 at 4:40 pmLove the bowls! Brings back memories of years ago. I wish we still had those tumblers, I always loved them.
December 27th, 2007 at 2:32 pmbowls weren’t of interest to me when my mother made ice cram. I wanted to have the paddle to lick off, especially when she made fresh peach ice cream. Back in the 1930s, I was glad to turn the handle of the ice cream maker in order to get the paddle.
December 27th, 2007 at 2:32 pmthe bowls do remind me of the alumimun tumblers when I was a kid
December 27th, 2007 at 2:21 pmThe aluminum ice cream bowls bring back wonderful childhood memories. We had aluminum glasses the same colors. They kept the drinks cool and looked great. My mom still has them. Thanks for the great journaling. It was a wonderful idea. P.S. I’d like to win the bowls.
December 27th, 2007 at 2:14 pmThose aluminum ice cream bowls bring back memories of my Uncle Johnny’s aluminum tumblers. Thanks for the Ice Cream Journal - I enjoyed reading it and participating. Happy New Year.

December 27th, 2007 at 2:03 amThose bowls remind me of my childhood!! They would be great with ANY flavor of TH ice cream.
December 26th, 2007 at 9:45 pmAll I want for Christmas is a year’s supply of ice cream — what could be better than that?
December 26th, 2007 at 9:33 pmHoping to end this year off well with a year’s supply of Turkey Hill. Happy New Year to all!

you are so right Ed McKito who wrote:
I remember when my Grandmother served us kids ice cream in these bowls. Seems we always ended up fighing over the color bowl we wanted. Sure do miss those fights since we’ve all grown up.

December 26th, 2007 at 5:00 pmHappy Turkey Hill and Happy New Year!
December 26th, 2007 at 4:32 pmWhat better way to “ring” in the “NEW YEAR” than to win “TURKEY HILL” ice cream for a year. May everyone have a healthy, happy 2008. Bless you all!!! P.S. Serving all that yummy ice cream in those aluminum bowls would be awesome. I remember drinking kool-aid out of those aluminum tumblers. Such sweet childhood memories.
December 26th, 2007 at 4:30 pmThe bowls remind me of a set my mother had with matching tumblers. My mother would freeze them. They kept the ice cream, milkshakes and floats cold on a hot summer day.
December 26th, 2007 at 4:25 pmLooks like something that would keep a ’serving size’ of ice cream in check. But, who really follows serving sizes when it comes to ice cream!
December 26th, 2007 at 4:20 pmNICE BOWLS ,HOPE THE ONE WHO WIN ENJOYS THEM, MERRY CHRISTMAS
December 26th, 2007 at 4:15 pmLove the retro bowls…awesome! Happy New Year!
December 26th, 2007 at 4:05 pmI recently found my grandmothers tumblers that match these bowls. They are fun, and they keep things really cold.
December 26th, 2007 at 3:39 pmNow that’s what I’m talking about. Very fun dishes that remind me of when I was a kid. We had cups like that. Like I’ve told you in past excerpts, I’m one of 12 and have 6 kids myself. We had a mismosh of all different cups and dishes…nothing matched and we didn’t know any better nor care. I can remember how cold they were when we would drink anything with ice in them. Now all these years later, seeing them, it brought a smile and memories back. I know my siblings would laugh and smile as well. I would prob. break them up and send one to each of my older siblings that needed a laugh. Once again, I’m glad to have signed up for your 12 days of Christmas. I have so many memories that I’m so fond of and you brought alot of them to mind. God Bless all of you and keep the ice cream coming. Amy
December 26th, 2007 at 3:08 pmlove the bowls and think they would keep the ice cream nice and cold like it should be.
December 26th, 2007 at 2:58 pmI love coffee Ice cream and love pecan Ice cream how about a new flavor of coffee/pecan. Will be waiting for it.
December 26th, 2007 at 2:56 pmWow Those bowls do remind me of those aluminum tumblers from the past and of course I guess I,m showing my age! First thought of those bowls reminded me of all the colorful flavors of icecream that Turkey Hill has to offer. I guess I would love these bowls and would continue to fill them with all the great kinds of ice cream!!!!!!
December 26th, 2007 at 2:53 pmBeautiful bowls!
December 26th, 2007 at 2:32 pmI actually had some glasses like these dishes YEARS ago !!!!!
December 26th, 2007 at 2:20 pmI love these bowls….cool (in more ways than one). When you fill them with ice cream do you need mittens to hold them?
December 26th, 2007 at 2:10 pmwhat U mean retro? when did they go out of style? does this mean I am retro also?
December 26th, 2007 at 1:49 pmI was merely midle aged when they were introduced. I can still eat a bowl full as long as its turkey hill class

December 26th, 2007 at 12:18 pmAwesome colors on the ice cream bowls. Happy New Year to everyone!
December 26th, 2007 at 12:16 pmI would love some coffee ice cream in those beautiful bowls!
December 26th, 2007 at 12:15 pm364 shopping days till Christmas
December 26th, 2007 at 12:06 pmI remember when my Grandmother served us kids ice cream in these bowls. Seems we always ended up fighing over the color bowl we wanted. Sure do miss those fights since we’ve all grown up.
December 26th, 2007 at 12:03 pmMy Mom had the aluminum tumblers. I always wanted to use the purple one (my high school colors were purple and white).
December 26th, 2007 at 11:59 amNo matter the price Turkey Hill Ice Cream is number ONE in our house. To decide a favorite flavor becomes a household debate so we pick Turkey Hill as our favorite
December 26th, 2007 at 11:53 amHOPE YOU ALL HAD A WONDERFUL CHRISTMAS………….
December 26th, 2007 at 11:49 amNOW WE WISH YOU THE BEST FOR A HAPPY NEW YEAR “2008″
I didn’t get this email until 26th - but I still say ice cream should be it’s own food group and should be an integral part of everyone’s diet!
December 26th, 2007 at 11:37 amWhen I was little we had bowls and glasses like the ones pictured. Aah, memories!!
December 26th, 2007 at 11:29 amMy aunt still has the aluminum cups! These cups would be great to complete the set!

December 26th, 2007 at 11:10 amDeb P.
Happy New Year!!!!!!
December 26th, 2007 at 11:06 amNow that’s something I’d really use and a great way to eat my ice cream with the style and prominence it deserves.
December 26th, 2007 at 11:05 amI don’t remember how I first found the Turkey Hill site, but I am sure glad I did! This is my most favorite site,,, it’s the most fun,,informative and you can win prizes too,, what more could anyone ask for?! We too, had the aluminum tumblers when I was young. My Mom might still have them around somewhere,, but I never knew there were other pieces to match. I love those ice cream bowls, they are really cool. If I won them,, they would ONLY be for eating Turkey Hill ice cream out of!
December 26th, 2007 at 10:58 amThe kids have already picked out who in the family would get each color so we really hope we win.
December 26th, 2007 at 10:56 amI really like the bowls. I might even be pursuaded to change from my nightly mug but the ice cream would still be Turkey Hill.
December 26th, 2007 at 10:54 amI know it’s not the 25th but all the posting seem to be a day late? In any case I logged on yesterday and wished everyone Happy Holidays but I’d like to say it once again.
December 26th, 2007 at 10:53 amMy grandmother used to have aluminum cups. They would be so cold in the winter but perfect for the summer!
December 26th, 2007 at 10:49 amI remember those bowls from when I was a young child. As soon as I saw them it brought back memories of a slower paced and more innocent time. The only problem was the limited flavors of ice cream but then we didn’t know what we were missing!!!
Merry Christmas to all.
December 26th, 2007 at 10:26 amThese 12 days of Christmas have been so much fun and the prizes were great. Hope I win the year’s free ice cream. Merry Christmas to all and a Happy and Healthy New Year to come. I love those bowls!
December 26th, 2007 at 10:23 amHappy Holidays to everyone - I still prefer my ice cream in a tall dessert dish, just like the restaurants serve.
December 26th, 2007 at 10:22 amMy grandma had glasses like this, but not bowls & she unfortunatley didn’t have TH ice cream either.
December 26th, 2007 at 10:19 amI don’t remember when I first had TH ice cream or when it became common in the markets around here where I live. That would be interesting to find out. Keep the great flavors & quality ice cream etc coming!!
At what age does a product or a person become “Retro”.
December 26th, 2007 at 10:17 amWayne
I feel I need another bowl of Turkey Hill ice cream.
December 26th, 2007 at 10:04 amThose bowls are definitely retro… and cool!
December 26th, 2007 at 10:00 amYou’re the best. Thank you Turkey Hill!!
December 26th, 2007 at 9:56 amSomehow I didn’t get to see the purple cow photo. But the aluminum cups are cute.
December 26th, 2007 at 9:47 amI’d love to have those. Would really enjoy my ice cream in them.
December 26th, 2007 at 9:45 amDidn’t get everything that you wanted for Christmas? Drown your sorrows in ICE CREAM made with milk from Purple Cows.
December 26th, 2007 at 9:38 amThe bowls look really neat! They’d look even better filled with our favorite flavors of Turkey Hill Ice Cream. Wow, that would look really good to all of us!
Thanks for making so many delicious flavors of ice cream. We all enjoy it!
December 26th, 2007 at 9:30 amI remember those bowls. Would love to have a year’s supply of TH Ice Cream and the bowls to eat it from.
December 26th, 2007 at 9:27 amwe have talked about the best flavors in ice cream, everone has a differant personal favorite ! discussed appropriate occasions to eat ice cream, any celebration at all, such as weddings, christenings, sunday after dinner, monday night football, or just because. we have seen somethig i did not believe existed, purple cows, and now its down to the final day of the contest. the prize of a years supply of turkey hill ice cream is mind blowing. hope i win !
December 26th, 2007 at 9:13 amThanks for the fun these last 12 days. These bowls are really cute.
December 26th, 2007 at 9:13 amGreat. This was a lot of fun. Thanks Turkey Hill.
December 26th, 2007 at 8:55 amThese aluminum dishes remind me of ice cream dishes that a neighbor of my mother’s had when we were kids. My neighbor, the late “Aunt Emmy” made the best cookies and pies served with vanilla ice cream. Those were the days!
December 26th, 2007 at 8:14 amGIVE ME ICE CREAM EVERYDAY FOR THE HOLIDAY SEASON!
December 26th, 2007 at 8:12 amI’ve always thought the aluminum dishes were the coolest. My mother did not have any when we were kids but a neighbor did. I used to go over to their house and ask for a drink of water just so I could drink out of an aluminum glass. How funny is that?
December 26th, 2007 at 8:05 amHappy Holidays.
December 26th, 2007 at 7:41 amAbsolutely beautiful! Please send me the bowls along with the Ice Cream, of course!

December 26th, 2007 at 6:18 ammerry christmas
December 26th, 2007 at 5:21 amAre you familiar with the painted cows that populate downtown West Hartford, CT? I could swear there is a swirly cow or two there, too. You must check them out, if you haven’t already. Merry Boxing Day & Happy New Year, purveyors of fine ice cream. Now, let’s go ‘bowling’!
December 26th, 2007 at 4:33 amGreat Picture!!! The bowls look like there are coming out of the computer screen. Awsome. Well Merry Christmas & Happy New Year. God Bless Ya’ll & your four legged “babies” too.
December 26th, 2007 at 2:37 amI love these retro bowls. They bring back fond memories and great taste memories! It seemed that ice cream tasted creamier, sweeter and colder in those little darlings.
December 26th, 2007 at 2:05 amMerry Christmas! Nice bowls.
December 26th, 2007 at 12:46 amThis looks to me like the best of the twelve prizes!
December 26th, 2007 at 12:46 amThese aluminum chalices remind me of the precious vessels we used to receive our local dairy’s finest ice cream in when I was a youth. After a ballgame, there was no better place to go to celebrate youth, America, and baseball than our local dairy. It reminds me of the little cone-shaped water cups on Final Jeopardy. Euclid (Ohio) Race Dairy, where are you now????
December 26th, 2007 at 12:45 amWow the 12 days went sooo fast. The bowls can go with my mother-in-law’s scoop from the 50’s.
December 26th, 2007 at 12:38 amMy family wishes all a joyous holiday and a Happy and Healthy 2008. We also look forward to all the 2008 new flavors of TH. Good luck to all in the drawing for the year supply of TH and if it is not me I had fun writing my entries so all would not be lost.
What a fitting closure to your “12 Days of Christmas”…..I am imagining finishing a Christmas Dinner with a lights-out (candles lit) presentation of Ice Cream Snowballs served in aluminum bowls. This has been a happy contest! Whether we win anything or not, I have enjoyed so much reading the comments of other ice cream lovers. Thank you, Turkey Hill!
December 26th, 2007 at 12:33 amCool bowls, cool flavors, cool contest. What’s not to like?
December 26th, 2007 at 12:08 amThese bowls are stunning and would make eating ice cream even more fun! Thanks so much!
December 26th, 2007 at 12:06 amThe bowls are beautiful! But they’ll be even more beautiful with some of my favorite Turkey Hill Limited Edition Baked Apple Dumpling ice cream in them!!!

December 25th, 2007 at 11:39 pmI wouldn’t mind eating some Turkey Hill ice cream out of these bowls. I remember these when I was a kid growing up. You never know - what goes around comes around. I am glad I am still around to see these cups come back in style.

Turkey Hill BUTTER BRICKLE!!!
Is the bowl big enough for my turkey hill? Guess it will be ok…there are six of them!
December 25th, 2007 at 8:37 pmWe could each have our own color bowl. I get purple to go with yesterday’s cows. Thank you for the 12 days of Christmas. It’s been fun.
December 25th, 2007 at 8:32 pmThe bowls are great. I remember the tumblers and I believe there was also a pitcher. Turkey Hill makes the best.
December 25th, 2007 at 8:17 pmI would love the bowls, remind me of home long ago.
December 25th, 2007 at 8:10 pmWe had the tumblers too. I remember how cold they were when you put ice cubes in them!
Guess my mother had a full set at some point, but I only remember there being maybe three or four of them.
This was a fun kind of contest. Thanks!

A great way to remember all the Christmas holidays that use to be when everyone got together and spent the day with each other and not with the gifts. Oh, if we could only bring those days back again? Maybe these awesome almost christmas ball like dishes will help.

December 25th, 2007 at 6:53 pmMerry Christmas Turkey Hill! We will be celebrating tonight with an ice cream pie made with Turkey Hill chocolate ice cream. We hope that everyone there had a blessed holiday!
December 25th, 2007 at 6:33 pmLOVE the bowls. I bet they’d get all chilly with ice cream in them, which would be wonderful come those hot August days. Aw, who am I kidding? They’d be awesome ANY time. Grandma used to have the cups that matched them… I’ve never seen bowls.
Merry Christmas to all. This has been fun. Thanks, Turkey Hill!!!

December 25th, 2007 at 5:49 pmHey, love the picture, it’s pretty trippy. I have an idea for a really cool ice cream flavor: ‘Candy Cain Gingerbread Cookie Dough Ice Cream,’ you could have it available just for the holidays. It would be vanilla ice cream with red swirls in it that would be Candy Cain flavored, with Gingerbread Cookie Dough in it - yummy!
December 25th, 2007 at 5:29 pmMerry Christmas!
