JANUARY POLL: CONE OR CUP?
Posted by: Turkey Hill Team
This month’s poll is simple, though the choice in real life may not always be. When you visit your local ice cream shop (which, as an ice cream lover, you really should be doing more often…remember our New Year’s resolutions?), are you more of a cup person or a cone person? It’s a valid question. Some of us are strictly one or the other and some of us kind of go back and forth depending on our mood.
You’ll also notice in our poll that we’ve broken down the “cone” category into the two main families of cones: sugar (or waffle) and wafer (sometimes referred to as a “cake” cone). The sugar and waffle cones are a dense, brittle, crunchy cone. They’re almost always tall and pointy-ended, although some ice cream shops offer waffle bowls (technically not a “cone”), sometimes dipped in chocolate and other sweets.
The wafer cones, on the other hand, are much different. These are the light, airy, flat-bottomed ones you probably remember from your childhood. The flat bottom comes in handy when you want to take break and put your cone on a table or a leather car seat. Most soft serve ice cream is served up in a wafer cone. These are also the type of cone you’re most likely to see being sold in boxes at the grocery store.

If you’ve got a technical question about the ice cream making process or some other inquiry about the nuances of America’s favorite treat, chances are Ernie has the answer. He might not be able to answer all questions, but he’ll try his best and some may be featured on the Ice Cream Journal.

Waffle Bowl all the way!!!
January 27th, 2008 at 12:23 amI love the sugar cone, the waffle cone, ice just taste better on the cone. That is just my opinon, but however you like your ice cream if it is Turkey Hill’s Ice Cream it got to be good
January 19th, 2008 at 1:29 pmI like cake cones, but usually take it in the cup…does eating it out of the container count as a cup??? LOL
January 12th, 2008 at 9:36 ammy favorite is the sugar cone, just make sure it is filled with turkey hill ice cream
January 11th, 2008 at 1:53 pmMy favorite is waffle cone! Of course, Turkey Hill in the cone makes it perfect!
January 11th, 2008 at 10:48 amIt’s the waffle bowl for me, but my Grandson’s love the waffle cones. But when we make a sundae we all use the bowl because it holds more.
January 9th, 2008 at 8:35 ami like both cake cone and sugar cones. but ice cream is good in all of them.
January 8th, 2008 at 2:03 pmSugar Cone, if they don’t have a sugar cone I will not eat a cake cone so I go with a bowl.
January 8th, 2008 at 10:32 amI like the waffle cone!
January 7th, 2008 at 10:39 pmLIKE CONE BUT YOU GET MORE GREAT ICE CREAM IN A BOWL
January 7th, 2008 at 6:52 pmI like the waffle cone or cake cone Best.
January 7th, 2008 at 6:10 pmCake cone
January 7th, 2008 at 2:56 pmWaffle cones, or sugar cones as we used to call them are my favorite. I fill them up at least twice before I eat the cone, and I usually dip them in…as we call them “jimmys”!!! chocolate ones of course!
January 7th, 2008 at 11:24 amYipee I received my Turkey Hill calendar in the mail Saturday….Thank you so much and this weekend I had my usual Turkey Hill Vanilla ice cream over Apple Pie….and yes I prefer a cone of ice cream…..
January 7th, 2008 at 9:18 amI always go for the cup. The kids love the sugar cones but we insist that they get a cup and turn the ice cream cone upside down to avoid the ineditable scoop of ice cream on the floor.
January 7th, 2008 at 9:14 amHey! I noticed you fixed your clock! Good job!
January 7th, 2008 at 12:05 amEver since we had our Ice Cream shop, I fell in love with the waffle bowl. You just can’t keep hot fudge or caramel on a cone! It’s the best of both worlds! and you can build a great sundae in it too! (Plus, we saw an awful lot of kids lick the ice cream right off the top of those sugar cones! It just doesn’t hold the scoop of IC very well.)
January 7th, 2008 at 12:04 amI’ll take it any way I can get it, but prefer a waffle cone.
January 6th, 2008 at 7:17 pmCup or bowl for sure.I cannot risk losing any of that rich, creamy, delicious ice cream which I may want to put a topping on. I think I need some right now.
January 6th, 2008 at 6:46 pmCup - too hard to manage a cone - and too risky!
January 6th, 2008 at 6:02 pmI love the waffle cone. I will now experience the luxurious waffle bowl. I love the taste of the cone too.
January 6th, 2008 at 3:06 pmA Waffle Cone. The Ice Cream tastes great when you get to the bottom.
January 6th, 2008 at 3:03 pmI like to enjoy my ice cream in a cup. Why “fill up” your space with a cone? I think cake cones are “flavorless” and if I want some crunch with my ice cream I go for the waffle cone or bowl because they taste better.
January 6th, 2008 at 3:01 pmI prefer a cone because it makes my ice cream last longer.:-) Definitely the waffle cone is my favorite but any will do. This also allows me to eat less than in a bowl and savor the flavor. But who is counting calories?
January 6th, 2008 at 3:01 pmSugar cones provide the sweet crunch to compliment any flavor ice cream yet, for the mere fun of having a cone on those hot summer days, a flat-bottomed waffle cone can not be beat as, too, it is sweet to eat with the cool drippings accumulated at the bottom providing a spongy, sugary culmination to the treat which can not be beat!
January 6th, 2008 at 11:33 amI love those waffle cones
January 6th, 2008 at 7:05 amI like them all, but give me the sugar cone. I love the crispiness of it and the texture of it. Tastes good too
January 5th, 2008 at 11:21 pmsometimes i have a small dilemna deciding just which one because i love them all. lately i’ve chosen a cup because i find eating my turkeyhill slowly is more enjoyable!! in hot weather a cup is the neater way to go.
January 5th, 2008 at 8:49 pmthen on other occasions i ask for a cone and when being served ask for the whole thing to be put in a cup!! the best of both worlds.
Waffle Cone for me:
January 5th, 2008 at 8:22 pmBut with my 2 gran children the Waffle bowl, if the best bet. Less mess and more Ice Cream to enjoy.
My favorite is the sugar cone. Two great tastes together. Aaaaah!
January 5th, 2008 at 7:53 pmGive me the sugar cone every time.
January 5th, 2008 at 7:50 pmMakes the ice cream stand-out. Two things to enjoy at the same time.
I like the waffle and the sugar cone. After I have eaten the ice cream above the cone and midway through it, I then bite off the bottom and suck the ice cream through the bottom. It is more like a fluid since its melted on the bottom. Deelish.
January 5th, 2008 at 7:03 pmSugar cone is my favorite
January 5th, 2008 at 6:44 pmSugar cone first and cake cones second
January 5th, 2008 at 6:43 pmThere are so many varieties of the cones, sugar, waffle, cups, I think it depends on the flavor of the ice cream. I like mint choc. chip in a bowl, but I also like Phila Vanilla in a waffle cone. It depends on the flavor or your mood.
January 5th, 2008 at 5:53 pmThe sugar cone was always my favorite- that was until the introduction of the waffle cone and bowl! My choice depends on how much I can eat! My absolute favorite is a waffle cone dipped in chocolate and nuts! Yum Yum!!
January 5th, 2008 at 5:40 pmEating ice cream out in a bowl is almost liking eating it at home…I want to splurge and have something different and it has to be a waffle cone
January 5th, 2008 at 5:38 pmMaybe it’s because I grew up with the cake cone, but I still prefer it. Every Sunday night was ice cream night.
January 5th, 2008 at 5:35 pmI liked when we had the cones that came in different colors.
I’m definitely a sugar cone girl! In fact, I have to admit to buying a box just to eat the cone without ice cream. I know, that’s almost sacrilage on this website, but they taste that good to me.
January 5th, 2008 at 5:30 pmI guess I am from the old school as I still enjoy the cake cones, either at home or in a store-shop. Since I am having cholestrol problems I try to stick to just ice cream for a spluge. Turkey Hill is the best at home ice cream to us.
January 5th, 2008 at 5:00 pmI guess I am old fashioned because I still prefer the cake cone over the rest…occasionally though I do like the dish of ice cream because that is the way we used to eat it at my parents and grandparents house..back then no one ever purchased cones…
January 5th, 2008 at 4:53 pmMost of my ice cream is enjoyed at home in a bowl, with two flavors a winning combination. During the good weather months it is tough to top savoring the experience of licking the ice cream sitting atop a sugar cone, staying just a whisper ahead of the melting ice cream, and every once in a while giving a lick to the cone’s bottom to make sure it is not leaking!
January 5th, 2008 at 4:35 pmCake cone!!!!! Makes you feel like a kid again.
January 5th, 2008 at 4:28 pmWaffle cone! No contest!
January 5th, 2008 at 4:25 pmI THINK THE THE CAKE CONE IS THE BEST. IT’S THE TRADITIONAL LOOK OF THE ICE CREAM CONE AND I THINK IT TASTE THE BEST WITH ICECREAM.
January 5th, 2008 at 4:05 pmMy choice is no cone… that way there is more “room” for ice cream!
January 5th, 2008 at 3:18 pmI like sugar cones but I get sundaes too so they are in a large cup
January 5th, 2008 at 2:47 pmi like my icecream in an oversized coffee cup.
January 5th, 2008 at 2:46 pmi also want to thank turkey hill for the very cool calendar i just got in the mail today filled with coupons. love it…! so does my husband. i think he is going to steal it and bring it too work. I may need another one. ;o(
Love the sugar cones, BUT–I put my money into an extra scoop–or two, instead of a cone. As for flavors-TH is the ONLY ice cream maker that has a true Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream….with millions of fine, sweet, delicious pieces of shredded chocolate,
January 5th, 2008 at 2:19 pmunlike all the others, who have some hard little chunks of chocolate and green or white flavored ice cream. My grandson calls those others “ooooo, barf-bag”.
sugar cone is my favorite…funny how i’ve never seen one of those waffle bowls before!
January 5th, 2008 at 2:04 pmOld fashion Sugar Cone Is My Preference
January 5th, 2008 at 1:45 pmI prefer the cake cone to the waffle. Sometimes the sweetness of the waffle cone takes away the flavor of the ice cream, which is what this all about.
January 5th, 2008 at 1:42 pmLOVE THE CONE SHAPES ,THEY MAKE A NICE CONTAINERS FOR LITTLE CUPCAKES FOR THE FAMILYS AND PARTIES
January 5th, 2008 at 1:29 pmI really like the waffle cone but rarely get. I usually pick the cup and splurge on the ice cream & topping.
January 5th, 2008 at 1:26 pmI prefer a bowl at home and a sugar cone out-if you use the cones at home-put a mini marshmallow in the bottom to prevent leaks or if you are serving a lot at home-melt a little chocolate and pour in a little in each cone to prevent the leaks-let it harden-i do like eating the cone from both ends-such a challenge!
January 5th, 2008 at 12:46 pmCup for me…saving the extra calories for more ice cream!!!
January 5th, 2008 at 12:43 pmNo contest, the crunchy “cake” cone is
January 5th, 2008 at 12:29 pmbest
It’s functional, easy to hold and
passes the taste test.
Yes, the bottom gets soggy and
even leaks a bit
But this helps enjoy the ice cream, top
and bottom, every drop of it!
Cake cone, for sure. Reminds me of a little gas station that also had a cooler with hard ice cream that was hand scooped. It seemed like it took forever to get the cone, but when you did, it was well worth it. Who cared if the bottom got soggy and it ran into your hand!!!
January 5th, 2008 at 12:09 pmI am definitely a cone girl (my favorite is the waffle cone. My hubby is a cup guy. But we always agree on the flavors. On a cold dreary winter’s evening, there is nothing like good company and a bowl of Turkey Hill Ice Cream. Yummy
January 5th, 2008 at 11:52 amI love sugar cones with any flavor Turkey Hill ice cream. When we were kids, we would eat it down level with the top of the cone, then bite the bottom off and suck it out through the end! Very messy, but loads of fun!
January 5th, 2008 at 11:46 amCones are for when you need your ice cream to be mobile with you. I love them in the summer when you either scoop ice cream at home and go for a walk or walk to the ice cream shoppe and then eat it while walking back home. Waffle bowls are a nice treat when you want everything piled on your ice cream!
January 5th, 2008 at 11:34 amWe like the cup the best so doesen’t our 14 year ols Bassett Hound
January 5th, 2008 at 11:31 amI like vanilla in either a waffle cone or a cake cone.
January 5th, 2008 at 11:29 amAny type cone is good but especially the waffle cone.
January 5th, 2008 at 11:29 amThere was no doubt the waffle or sugar cone. I’ve avoided the “cake” type ever since I was old enough to find out the sugar or waffle cones were available. Just what is in those “cake” cones? Sort of reminds me of “soft-serve ice cream” that’s served by “air pressure” - down a few pounds??
January 5th, 2008 at 11:25 amI prefer cake cones with soft ice cream, however here in the South, usually to warm, and the ice cream melts down over my hand. So I get mine in a cup.
January 5th, 2008 at 11:15 amSugar Cone with coffee ice cream is my favorite!
January 5th, 2008 at 11:10 amWhen I’m in my easy chair, definitely the bowl approach where I can hem and haw and slowly enjoy the moment. When on the road, the cone route…plain old fashioned sugar cone most times, but really not picky. As long as there’s some good ice cream it will be devoured in short order. On those hot summer nights, I tend to speed up my approach and all manners go out the door, I have my priorities, i.e. not letting any get away from me:)
January 5th, 2008 at 10:57 amWell, when I’m out and about, it’s a cone for me, top choice is a waffle cone, with a sugar cone if they don’t have the waffle cone. But when I’m home where no one can see, I’m greedy for my TH! Give me a plain bowl so I can get more ice cream in it! Depending on circumstances, sometimes only the carton of TH is the answer!
January 5th, 2008 at 10:47 amI grew up with the wafter cone and its still my preference IF I’m having a cone. If I want to do it up right, I use the bowls and add sauce and nuts and and whatever else I can find.
January 5th, 2008 at 10:45 amMy husband got cheated out of his vote. He says you have a very good system not allowing the same ID to vote twice preventing the stuffing of the ballot box. It is the better half of the trade-off which costs duel users two votes. Some answers seem like they are answering how they have their ice cream at home. It would be interesting to have a vote on that which I feel for TH 99% will say from the carton. As for the comment it seems more prefer the bowl but the voting shows the cone the favorite so in my house we both were in the majority–Me with the comments and hubby with the vote
January 5th, 2008 at 10:42 amWaffle cones for me but, why not just eat Turkey Hill ice cream right out of the container!
January 5th, 2008 at 10:38 amWhen we go out, I usually get a waffle cone and once in awhile, I will get the sugar cone. At home it’s usually a regular bowl.
January 5th, 2008 at 10:01 amFirst choice is a waffle cone(it has to me homemade at the ice cream shop), if not then I always choose a sugar cone. I only choose a bowl when I eat ice cream at home.
I also miss the double cones,Isaly’s stores always used them,it made eating a double or triple scoop alot easier.
January 5th, 2008 at 9:55 amWell ice cream in the retro bowls that I did not win (sore loser:)) would be awesome with tons of homemade whipped cream, but at an ice cream store…definately the good old fashion sugar cone with choc. sprinkles. Amy
January 5th, 2008 at 9:49 amI love the sugar cone, maily in the winter. We, New Englanders, eat ice cream year round. In the summer, however, I can’t eat the ice cream fast emough to keep it from dripping down my arm. At that point, I reluctantly order a cup.
January 5th, 2008 at 9:45 amThe sugar cone brings back childhood memories for me. I always ate my ice cream this way. Even today we buy sugar cones to have at home. It may get messy at times but that’s part of the fun.
January 5th, 2008 at 9:28 amMy choice is definitely the cup. Less messy.
January 5th, 2008 at 9:25 amI love the Sugar Cone, But like all Cones/Bowls too
January 5th, 2008 at 9:19 amI wish I could find the Double Cone havent seen it since Lskewood Park Closed.
I always get my ice cream in a cup! But if I had to get a cone, it would definitely be a sugar cone!
January 5th, 2008 at 9:06 amchocolate dipped waffle cone is pure heaven…and filled w/ ice cream…even better!
January 5th, 2008 at 9:04 amI usually get my ice cream in a bowl but sometimes will get a cake cone or a sugar cone. The last bite of a cone that is soggy with ice cream is wonderful!!
January 5th, 2008 at 8:53 amCake cone is my favorite, but also like the waffle cones on occasion.
January 5th, 2008 at 8:47 amI chose a waffle/sugar cone,,because if I”m going to have a cone, that’s my cone of choice. But, depending on what I want ON my ice cream, will determine if I want a cone or in a bowl. If I want goodies on my ice cream, then I order it in a bowl. Sometimes, at home, I put my ice cream in a reg. bowl and crush a sugar cone ontop of it,, the best of both worlds! lol
January 5th, 2008 at 8:44 amPUT TURKEY HILL ICE CREAM IN A PAPER CUP AND I ENJOY IT
January 5th, 2008 at 8:32 amI prefer sugar cones, but love ice cream and I love it best in a cone!
January 5th, 2008 at 8:30 amIt depends on my mood….bowl or waffle/sugar cone. Some places don’t have the waffle cone or it’s just too big a serving (ok, I know, I know…..is there such a thing as too big a serving of ice cream??). I’ve never tried the waffle bowl. Looks good, but also looks like it would provide a challenge to eat it.
January 5th, 2008 at 8:17 amThe wafer/cake cone is definitely out…what a crummy taste to leave in your mouth after eating such delicious ice cream….never quite understood that one, I’m sure it’s a lot cheaper than the sugar/waffle cone though.
When it comes to cones, I`d rather have the waffle cone..
The cups are great at home, when I have friends over…We chat while eating the ice cream then the cup..It`s great!
January 5th, 2008 at 8:11 amSugar cone all the way.
January 5th, 2008 at 8:07 amwaffle cone if i am out, bowl if home
January 5th, 2008 at 7:53 amThe real answer to today’s poll is BOTH cup and cone. I like the ice cream in a dish with the cone on top. Why? 1. I think you get more ice cream. 2. I like to have peices of the cone with the ice cream. So, I think you need to add another choice to your poll.
January 5th, 2008 at 7:45 amThanks!
Cake cone for me.
January 5th, 2008 at 7:45 amwaffle cone is the pick for me..if your going to splurge and eat extra calories, why not go all the way!
January 5th, 2008 at 7:39 amI always get a soft serve in a cake cone. But I love waffle cones.
January 5th, 2008 at 7:25 amcorrection, if I get ice cream out, I love the luxury of hot fudge.
January 5th, 2008 at 6:57 amFirst pick is a waffle cone…second is the waffle bowl…third is sugar cone, and lastly is the cake cone.
January 5th, 2008 at 6:56 amI have to say I like my ice cream straight up, no cones for me. But if I get ice out and they have hot fudge, I can’t resist.
January 5th, 2008 at 6:56 amI love to get a scoop inside a sugar cone, but I put it in the cup. This way I can savor the taste of the ice cream and have the sweet treat of the cone at the end. This also helps control the ice cream leaking all over the cone. But no matter how you have your Turkey Hill, it is always great!
January 5th, 2008 at 6:10 amSugar cone if available. Can’t afford a waffle cone size (sigh).
January 5th, 2008 at 2:14 amI usually prefer any kind of cone because for some reason I eat it much slower and savor every lick, unless of course it’s a superhot day.
January 4th, 2008 at 10:21 pmwhen I visit my friendly ice cream shop, I prefer a cone unless we are staying and sitting and eating sundaes.
January 4th, 2008 at 9:56 pmI like them all, but prefer a bowl, then a cake cone and then waffle cones or bowls.
January 4th, 2008 at 9:04 pmSugar cone does it for me, though I’d rather put my calories directly into Turkey Hill, so I always ask for a paper cup, which, by the way, I do not eat!
January 4th, 2008 at 9:03 pmAlthough I voted for bowl, my absolute favorite is to get my ice cream in a bowl with a sugar cone on top (kind of like an upside down ice cream cone in a bowl). I then use the sugar cone as a spoon, eating a bite of the cone with each spoonful until the cone is gone. Then I switch back to the traditional spoon. I do this because I am far too clumsy to manage an ice cream cone on its own and it ends up either being a drippy mess or on the ground entirely before I have gotten a chance to enjoy it.
January 4th, 2008 at 8:51 pm~At home, it’s a bowl for me, but out it’s most definitely a cone!! Cones are so much fun because you have the chase of making sure the ice cream doesn’t drip down each side! In the car with sprinkles is a sure challenge, but I like to live on the edge!! I have to admit though, although the cake cone is good for sitting here there and nearly anywhere, and usually doesn’t leak out the bottom, most places I know usually have a paper boarder around the base of the cone that often times is glued to my cone making me overly aware that my next bite may be glued flavored! Other than that tid bit, I will eat ice cream in most anything.
January 4th, 2008 at 6:47 pm~But my favorite is eating it out of my duetto mug and sitting on the couch with a good movie!
No cones for me - I’ll take a bowl (and I don’t mean a waffle bowl) any time.
January 4th, 2008 at 5:31 pmI definitely like the waffle bowl, mostly because I don’t have to worry about missing a drop of ice cream that might otherwise get away by dripping down the cone!
January 4th, 2008 at 3:56 pmI only voted for myself. I will let my husband also vote after. We differ, me a cup and dear hubby the sugar cone.
January 4th, 2008 at 2:53 pmA well-made pretzel cone will occasionally get my pick — though I’m more likely to go sugar cone and crush some pretzels for the top of cone.
January 4th, 2008 at 2:10 pmI like them all, but my favorite is definitely the waffle cone.
