FANS RALLY TO SAVE LOCAL ICE CREAMERY
Posted by: Turkey Hill Team
We’ve long been advocates of supporting your local ice cream shop. Most of them are seasonal and family owned and rely on the sweet tooth of ice cream lovers like us to make it through the “off season” (even though there’s really no off season when it comes to enjoying ice cream).
Here’s a great example of that support. An ice cream shop in Cambridge, Massachusetts called Toscanini’s (the New York Times once claimed Toscanini’s had the world’s best ice cream) recently had to close its doors because it owed $150,000 in back taxes and the Massachusetts Department of Revenue seized the property until a portion of the total was paid. That’s when Toscanini’s local customers (and ice cream lovers throughout the area) came to rescue.
After an outpouring of online donations, fans of the shop raised $30,000 in just five days—enough to reopen the shop and bring Toscanini’s world famous ice cream back to the masses.

If you’ve got a technical question about the ice cream making process or some other inquiry about the nuances of America’s favorite treat, chances are Ernie has the answer. He might not be able to answer all questions, but he’ll try his best and some may be featured on the Ice Cream Journal.

March 4th, 2008 at 7:03 pmHELLO PEOPLE The owner did not pay his taxes- Since when did we become a country where it’s a “nice story” that a tax cheat got caught and his buisness shut down and other people pay send money to pay his taxes?
February 8th, 2008 at 4:53 pmI just love this story about ice cream, Turkey Hill taste like it is home made, rich and creamy. Can’t get enough of it.
February 6th, 2008 at 8:09 pmMy first job while in high school was in a local,(albeit, franchise), ice cream store. That chain of stores is still very much in the area as well as in surrounding states. Good product but I still love TH the best. Oh yeah, never did care much for the title of “soda jerk”.
Another FYI-in the county below mine they too have a Turkey Hill Road.
February 6th, 2008 at 8:49 amMy only chance to have ice cream treats was at the Woolworth lunch counter. I loved to watch the soda jerk fix my order.
February 4th, 2008 at 2:47 amA sweet story! Ice cream is the absolute best dessert and they knew it.
February 3rd, 2008 at 12:08 pmthis is such a good story. I have seen 3 of my childhood ice cream places close, so it is good to know that some people still care and are able to do something.

February 2nd, 2008 at 11:25 amGreat Story! Too bad ALL the Mom & Pop, local stores couldn’t get the same help. I worked for a family owned grocery store,,, it was a great store,, they were the greatest people to work for, but the big chain stores put them out of business. So sad!

February 1st, 2008 at 6:56 amThe Mom and Pop stores bring out the best in people. People probably grew up with this shop in their neighborhood and wanted it to continue. May the ice cream shop exist to see and serve another generation. Who doesn’t like ice cream anyway?
February 1st, 2008 at 12:18 amIt`s nice to hear that there are still good people in this world….
