This is it. The first annual Turkey Hill Ultimate Flavor Tournament. Once a year the power to crown one ice cream flavor as the “Ultimate Flavor” rests in the hands of the readers of the Ice Cream Journal. It’s a big responsibility, but we know you’re up for it.
Here’s how it works: Each week will feature a different series of match-ups, all voted on by you (see the polls on the right). We’ll start with 16 flavors (the “Sweet 16”) and narrow the field down every week until one flavor, as determined by your votes, is crowned the champion. Of course, there will also be prizes. At the end of the tournament, we’ll give away a free one month supply of ice cream to 10 commenters chosen at random and one lucky reader will receive a ONE YEAR supply of ice cream.
Each Monday, we’ll take a look back the previous week’s winners and losers and offer some predictions for the upcoming pairings, so feel free to check back often. And on that note, here’s an expert analysis from Ernie himself about this week’s “Sweet 16” match-ups. Take it away, Ern!
THE DUETTO MATCH-UP – Mango Duetto vs. Raspberry Duetto
“I can’t think of a better way to start the tournament than with this battle of two of our best new flavors. Either one could win here, but regardless of which one comes out on top, I expect the winner to make it into the Frosty Four and possibly make a run for the title.”
THE LIGHT MATCH-UP – Light Recipe Snyder’s Chocolate Pretzel vs. Light Recipe Moose Tracks
“This one is tough for me because ever since I’ve started my new weight loss plan I’ve really taken a liking to the entire Light Recipe line-up. I’m a big fan of both of these flavors, but based on the chocolate/peanut butter combination, I think Moose Tracks might have the edge here.”
THE MINT MATCH-UP – Light Recipe Skinny Minty vs. All Natural Mint Chocolate Chip
“A Light Recipe flavor going up against an All Natural flavor? This one should be interesting. Skinny Minty might be leaner, but that doesn’t mean it won’t fight hard for this win. It’ll be a good battle, but I expect Mint Chocolate Chip to come on out top in this one.”
THE YOGURT MATCH-UP – Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough vs. Raspberry Lemonade
“Even though they’re technically not ice cream, you can’t count out the frozen yogurt flavors in this tournament. These are two of our strongest yogurt contenders and I’m having a hard time picking a winner here. I might have to go back for a few more samples before making up my mind.”
THE SPORTS MATCH-UP – Eagles Touchdown Sundae vs. Phillies Graham Slam
“Is this a battle of flavors or a battle of sports? You’ve got football vs. baseball in a showdown of two of Philly’s most beloved sports teams. Since we’re coming up on the start of baseball season with the Phillies expected to make a strong run for the title, it looks like Graham Slam might be able to intercept this Touchdown pass and hit one out of the park for a win here.”
THE PEANUT BUTTER MATCH-UP – Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup vs. Peanut Butter Ripple
“Everyone knows I love peanut butter. Do I really have to pick a winner here? That’s like asking a Beatles fan what their favorite Beatles song is. They’re all great! If this one comes down to anything, it’s the fact that one flavor uses chocolate ice cream and the other uses vanilla. But even that doesn’t really narrow it down much!”
THE FRUIT MATCH-UP – Black Cherry vs. Black Raspberry
“Ahh, the fruit flavors. Some of the very first ice cream flavors ever created used fruit as a main ingredient. In Rome, they combined snow with fruit, which is technically more of a sorbet than an ice cream. But I digress. A winner here? I’m going with Black Cherry by a stem.”
THE BATTLE OF THE CLASSICS – Dutch Chocolate vs. Vanilla Bean
“This is the biggest battle of them all and I really think either one of these flavors could win this entire tournament. As for the winner here, it’s a coin toss. Ask me on Monday and I’ll say chocolate. On Tuesday, I’ll pick vanilla. Then on Wednesday, I’ll try both of them and call it a tie!”

Hey I also was 1 to pick all the majority flavors on the poll. I don’t think chocolate pretzel will win all the way. My son asked if the Phillies Graham Slam was still around as he had it for his birthday and he loves to follow the Phillies during the season. As far as vanilla and chocolate goes I usually always keep a vanilla along with other flavors in the house. You can add whatever you want to the vanilla to make new creations and its always good over pie or other fruit desserts.
Rasberry of any kind. The best is a rasberry PB and J so it has to be Peanut Butter Ripple and Black Raspberry

I haven’t voted yet but I can already tell I’m going to be struggling over many of the choices. I love ice cream and choosing one over another will be a challenge.
I just finished my “picks”. Now I feel just like my husband with his fantasy leagues. I took this way too seriously.
This contest is very hard. It should not put light up against regular. It depends if I want to be good and go light or splurge and go natural. Tough choices ’cause I love them all. Can’t wait to see if my choices come down to the final.

Ok, I’m pregnant now, so there’s no holds barred. I told you all to eat frozen yogurt for the new year, but now options are limitless. I got one wrong in the voting. I’m going to give the top three. Vanilla, Mint Choc. Chip and Choc. Pretzel. Choc. Pretzel is my favorite, but I’m thinking it’s always Vanilla hands down.
I somehow managed to pick ALL the current second-placers but one… I always knew I was averse to trends, but wow! At this rate I’ll have a hard time picking semi-finalists…
P.S. It may not have made the top sixteen, but my ultimate favorite is still Baked Apple Dumpling!!!!

Snyders Chocolate Pretzel is great, and the Mango Duetto. I have them together in the same dish, this way I have the best of both. Vanilla Bean is great with cream soda and dutch chocolate with root beer. WOW!! Thanks TH

As much as I love ice cream and peanuts, I dislike any kind of ice cream with peanuts or peanut butter in it. Walnuts, almonds pecans, pistachios are all fine, but not peanuts!
I happen to be in love with the Mango Duetto. The Lemon Duetto is great too. I could live on them. Not so much a raspberry fan.
C’mon Peanut Butter Ripple is the best flavor! It has that delicious gooey peanut butter chunk at the bottom! I certainly hope it wins!
My personal very favorite Turkey Hill flavor isn’t being made anymore: Death by Chocolate. That might be a good thing, since I now go mostly for the light ice creams and yogurt for health reasons.

so many choices, so many good flavors, as good as one is, it is hard to eliminate another. I love mango and raspberry duetto but now I have tried the cherry and I may never go back to the other ones. eating cherry duetto is like eating a jar of maraschino cherry, it is like having a cherry on top of the sundae in every bit.
There are quite a few flavors listed above that we haven’t tried. But we will. Can’t find the Box of Chocolates flavor that was out at Valentine’s Day. Will Turkey Hill be making more?
I love all Turkey Hill Ice Cream. How will I ever choose? Well, I’ll have to make a sacrifice and taste them all first to make my final decision

The Fruit Match-Up looks to be the tightest race since Affirmed and Alydar in the 1978 Kentucky Derby! Black raspberry has been my favorite flavor since I was a child, but black cherry is such a hot flavor that this contest could go down to the wire.

This contest is a great idea, but how can you only name one flavor as the champion? There are so many wonderful flavors that you may have a 3 or 4 way tie for first place.
I first was disappointed that my favorite, Coffee, didn’t make the match-up, but I was glad to see my second runner up, Black Cherry, did. I expect Black Cherry to come from behind and make it into the next round for sure!
I checked back this morning after making my selections yesterday to see how my favorites were doing. It’s really a lot of fun. Congrats to whoever thought of this idea.

A couple of my favorites as well as my husband and kids favorites didn’t make the list. I feel I should at least type them here to be fair. I’ve always loved the mint cookies and creme and my husband and son love the raspberry chocolate chunk. Thanks Turkey Hill for these amazing flavors.
I love the raspberry duetto, mango duetto and raspberry lemonade frozen yogurt flavors. Vanilla bean is such a classic, as is the dutch chocolate. I will be surprised to see if any of my picks win as THE ULTIMATE FLAVOR, as I tend to pick the underdog flavors.
It was interesting to see how many of the flavors are so close – almost a dead even heat for some of the flavors.
My prediction is for plain old vanilla bean – it’s a classic adn you can’t beat the Turkey Hill Vanilla Bean flavor.
OVERALL WINNER would be chocolate peanut butter cup, as that is the absolute best ice cream ever. It beats out any other brand out there, including Ben and Jerrys!

Among this week’s choices, I have favorites in 3 categories, and they’re easy choices. Moose Tracks in Light Recipes and Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup are ones most agree on. But in the fruits, I got to go with Black Cherry. I love everything with cherries, and Raspberry is not a favorite of mine in anything. Plus, Turkey Hill’s Black Cherry has a great taste.

Black Cherry and the all-natural Mint Chocolate Chip are two of my favorites. I hope Black Cherry pulls ahead in the voting. I’d still love to see Death by Chocolate make a return. The Box of Chocolates was good, but the milk chocolate “wrapper” wasn’t as complementary as I had hoped. I’d probably try a vanilla wrapper next year.

Rasberry Lemonade Frozen Yogurt–I can think of some great ways to serve it as a great summer treat. Smoothies, as a base for fruit sundaes, frozen yogurt pie–Yum Yum. It will look fancy and be easy to fix.

We love Turkey Hill products at our house. Just wish they made a Grape Nut flavor. There’s only one co. that makes it and they charge $5/half gallon.

I have a really hard time choosing a flavor when chocolate is involved. Turkey Hill has such a variety.
What a great idea. The only thing would be to have a half and half battle of the icream flavor, two in the same package. Then you could extend the battle to house holds as well as whole neighbor hoods. If you need more ideas I am for hire. Keep up the good work.
Chocolate lovers demand the strongest candidate, not the mild Dutch variety, but a dark chocolate with chocolate syrup and chocolate chunks. Unbeatable, on the plate or in the tournament!

Eagles v. Phillie Graham Slam
Well, I enjoy both of these flavors and while I am a big peanut butter fan, I have to admit that I like the Phillie Graham Slam best of the two. Those tiny mallowmars (sp?) in the mix make for an especially nice chewy treat to the graham cracker swirl!
The Eagles ice cream came into my world afterward when I could no longer find the Phillie Graham Slam and I have to say that there is not one flavor that I have tried of Turkey Hill’s icecream that I find displeasing.

Turkey Hill Ice Cream – nothing could be better in life. For my hubby – Raspberry Duetto and Mint Choc. Chip are his favs. My kids love the ‘swirly whirly’ (fudge ripple) flavor the best. As for me, give me choc. and pb! gotta love it!

Mint Chocolate Chip is definately my favorite type of ice cream. I especially love Turkey Hill’s mint chocolate chip because the chocolate is not hard and chunky but light, flakes
Moose Tracks is my second favorite, – Its just such a great mixture of chocolate, peanut butter, and carmel.

I just voted and was thrilled to see the peanut butter entries on the ballot. I, too, found it hard to pick which was my favorite because I have so many! Ice cream is my weakness and Turkey Hill is the BEST!!!
My son and daughter can be heard down the street at dessert time yelling, “Skinty Minty, Skinty Minty”. They are 2 and 4 and cannot pronounce it correctly, but I sure do know what they’re calling for!
Turkey Hill Ice Cream is the best! I especially love the following flavors and ingredients: vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, mint, peanut butter, any kind of nuts, cookie dough, pretzels, marshmallow, dark chocolate, milk chocolate, raisins, fruit flavors, fruit bits . . . Should I go on?
I just returned from a week in Haiti. We walked to an ice cream shop as I was going thru withdrawal from ice cream. I asked for peanut butter and I am a “peanut butter aholic”. I was so disappointed because I got coconut instead. I tried a second time for chocolate and got coffee. I am thankful for a safe trip home and a delicious bowl of peanut butter ripple w/ hot fudge topping. Great contest!

There are two favorite flavors at our house – chocolate and peanut butter. Of course I voted for chocolate peanut butter cup….but then, Black Cherry is so smooth and fruity, and Skinny Minty is so refreshing, and Vanilla Bean is so…vanilla! Come to think of it, I can’t find any I don’t like.

We all know that the best ice cream Turkey Hill makes is Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup. I have friends who have moved from the area, that come home just to eat that ice cream flavor. It’s a stand-out that is unmatched!

Light Recipe Skinny Minty is one of my all-time favorites. It is so delicious and filled with a trove of Keebler Grasshopper cookies–it’s not even like cookie “pieces”–there are nice chunks in there!! You can hardly even believe it a light recipe it’s so delicious and chock full of cookies…Yum-Yum-Yummy-Yum-Yum!!!!

The world has vanilla people and chocolate people, but even my husband, who is a chocolate person, says that Turkey Hill’s All Natural Vanilla Bean is the best vanilla. Not to put down Dutch Chocolate, but the All Natural Vanilla (not the Premium — sorry guys, doesn’t compare) can go head to head with all those frou-frou, high-priced ice creams and come out on top. The Dutch Chocolate isn’t a match.
These match ups are wonderful! I am not sure if I can pick a “favorite” as there hasn’t been one variety of Turkey Hill that I haven’t absolutely loved. Maybe because I always liked creamcicles as a kid, I am drawn to the
“duetto” group, and if I had to pick a favorite now that would be it. In any case….”Go Turkey Hill!!!”

I consider myself somewhat an ice cream connisseur. I once had 19 half gallons in my freezer! I love Turkey Hill products and have been trying to stick with many of the lighter varieties,(although chocolate peanut butter cup is to die for!!!) I LOVE the chocolate moose tracks (light) and I just got Nutty Caribou Caramel that I can’t wait to try. The contest is great. I look forward to picking my favs each week!

Chocolate seems to reign in this contest. But you can do so many things with Vanilla Bean – the variety of toppings are numerous. Even chocoholics can top their Vanilla Bean with chocolate syrup, chocolate chips, chocolate sprinkles and even crushed up chocolate chip cookies.

I think that the black cherry and vanilla bean are the greatest. The black cherry is always fill with sooooo many cherries. Every bite you get a cherry. Love it, love it.

Duetto is the greatest idea in ice cream. Raspberry is my favorite.
They should have put the root beer duetto up here, that’s actually one of my favorites now!
We take our ice cream seriously in our house. From making old fashioned chocolate sodas, to trying new flavors, we love it all. Although the choc. coconut Duetto wasn’t a kid favorite, my husband liked it as a lighter alternative. I wish the stores in our area carried all these great new flavors!
I love the many flavors of Turkey Hill and it is always fun to try all the flavors trouble is my freezer isn’t big enough to keep them all on hand!
I love, love, love ice cream. I’m totally addicted!!! Turkey Hill is my all-time favorite brand. My vote is for the Philly’s Graham Slam…when the supermarket has this, I’m a happy ice cream lover!!!
I didn’t know you had Eagles and Phillies flavors. Why don’t you give some love to the Pittsburgh area – we would like a Steelers flavor! I’m sure it would beat the Eagles in a matchup!!
When I was growing up, my grandfather would eat a heaping bowl of chocolate peanut butter cup ice cream almost every single night. I have fond memories of playing cards and eating ice cream with him. I’ve inherited his love for peanut butter cup ice cream, and will be cheering it on in the tournament!
My family will only eat Turkey Hill ice cream, if it is not Turkey Hill than it is still at the store. The only ice cream you will find in my freezer is Turkey Hill. We love all of the flavors but for me personally I love the Chocalate peanut butter filled pretzels, yum yum!

The All Natural Mint Chocolate Chip is the best mint ice cream I have ever had. Very fresh flavor. Of course, I love all of Turkey Hill’s all natural flavors. They are the only ice cream I buy.
It so hard to chose between flavors,but moose track and pb ripple are our house consistent winners.

I love Turkey Hill ice cream. It is impossible for me to choose a favorite as it depends on which I am in the mood for. The way I voted today might not be the way I’d vote tomorrow. One thing I can tell you is I buy Turkey Hill ice cream every week and have tried almost every flavor. The lite versions are excellent and other brands of lite do not even compare!
This tournament’s results are going to be very interesting. Our favorites are Mint Chocolate Chip and Dutch Chocolate, although we do love Butter Pecan too. It’s a tough decision to make as they’re all great.

Just finished up the chocolate,butter almond,vanilla box–it is great as I am not a strawberry lover. Now, the decision is which flavor will be next on my shopping list.
Jeanne, I’m jealous. My store doesn’t have the chocolate/butter almond/vamilla ice cream, and I have been dying to try it. I do like strawberry, but butter almond is a nice change.
Awsome pairings. There are definitely a few Cinderella flavors lurking that could prove to be big upsets. Watch out for that Raspberry Lemonade Frozen Yogurt – it will surprise you, Baby!

OOOHH never had peaches and cream, or th box of chocolates, must see if my store has them. Habe a quick combo for the kids, or the kid in us adults, Raspberry Duetto blended with Hawaiian Punch!! Makes a great cool shake!!
The mint chocolate chip was the favorite ice crean for month of March because it was green to celebrate the green of Ireland and had chocolate chips to make it a sundae topped with whipped cream and a cherry. What a treat for a great occasion. Add a scoop of vanilla with a drizzel of carmel and the combination will please everyone at the party.

If you haven’t tried Pineapple Upside Down Cake you are missing out. I was skeptical when a household member purchased this flavor, but now it is my favorite flavor of all time. It has even surpassed timeless vanilla, indulgent peanut butter cup, and refreshing mint choc chip! A perfect mixture of pineapple goodness and soft & sweet crust.
