BREAKING NEWS: TURKEY HILL IS TOPS IN PA
Posted by: Turkey Hill Team
We’ve always known Turkey Hill ice cream was #1 in the hearts of ice cream lovers throughout our home state of Pennsylvania, even if some of the bigger national brands outsold us overall. Not any more. Now, for the first time in our 76-year history, Turkey Hill is the #1 selling ice cream in Pennsylvania!
It’s an amazing honor to be the best selling ice cream in our home state and we owe that success to fans like you. You helped boost statewide sales by eight percent last year. Although we saw sales increases in Philadelphia and the mid-state, we saw most of our growth in Pittsburgh and western Pennsylvania (up 22 percent in those areas).
Overall, Turkey Hill accounts for 27 percent of all ice cream sold in Pennsylvania. Not too bad for a company which, as recently as the late 1970s, produced only 1,000 gallons of ice cream per day. Today we churn out over 100,000 gallons each day.
It’s hard to say what Turkey Hill founder Armor Frey would have thought if, back in the 1940s, someone had told him his company would someday hold a title like this. Actually, knowing what we know about Armor’s passion and will to succeed — a drive he passed on to his grandson and current Turkey Hill president, Quintin Frey — that prediction probably wouldn’t have surprised him one bit. Â

If you’ve got a technical question about the ice cream making process or some other inquiry about the nuances of America’s favorite treat, chances are Ernie has the answer. He might not be able to answer all questions, but he’ll try his best and some may be featured on the Ice Cream Journal.

March 30th, 2008 at 2:39 pmMy son is standing here with me and would like to mention how much he loves Turkey Hill. He tells me he wants me to buy Turkey Hill ice cream sandwiches. I know you make them and we’ll be sure to check the supermarket later today.
March 30th, 2008 at 8:29 amI see that some locations don’t have Turkey Hill and certainly many don’t have the variety we have here in the tri-state area. I guess there are some advantages to living in NJ.
March 30th, 2008 at 8:27 amWhen TURKEY HILL started selling here in the Philly suburbs, I was won over quickly. I smile every time I read the slogan on the box “Imported from Lancaster County”…makes it sound so classy!
March 30th, 2008 at 12:41 amCan’t believe it’s Vanilla vs. Peanut butter. I like neither, but will vote for vanilla. I’ll eat vanilla in a pinch. I’d rather not have ice cream than eat peanuts in ice cream. Crazy, huh?
March 29th, 2008 at 9:47 pmTurkey Hill is the only Ice Cream We eat in my family. Turkey Hill Is #1 all the way. You can’t touch Turkey Hill Ice Cream
March 29th, 2008 at 8:58 pmTurkey Hill is Number in NY too at least in my household!!!!
March 29th, 2008 at 6:36 pmTurkey Hill Dairy is a most beautiful site, driving up that hill and seeing it right there in the hillside. You deserve the accolades not just in Pennsylvania, but everywhere it’s sold. Your company should be the standard others strive to live up to!
March 29th, 2008 at 4:17 pmBetter breaking news for me. Today at Wegman’s I finally found the “THE BOX OF CHOCOLATES” and it was even on sale. Just tasted it and it was well worth the hunt for it. Is this a reissue of it for Mother’s Day or should I rush back to stock my freezer with it ?
March 29th, 2008 at 1:10 pmWay to go…as a MDresident we enjoy being a neighboring state and having quite a variety of flavors from Turkey Hill. I look forward to the Ice Screamers convention in June each year to be able to EAT and Eat and enjoy Turkey Hill in it’s home state. Congrats to you at Turkey Hill.
March 29th, 2008 at 11:36 amCongratulations for being number one in PA. You have my vote here in Maryland.

March 28th, 2008 at 4:35 pmI join in with all of the of the other bloggers in saying congrats and this is really no surprise! How far exactly does Turkey Hill’s marketing territory reach? Maybe it is time to open up some satellite Turkey Hills around the countryside. I bet it wouldn’t be too hard to find plenty of people to support that idea!
March 28th, 2008 at 4:26 pmI’m doing my part for sure in trying to make Turkey Hill #1 up here in Maine!
March 28th, 2008 at 4:23 pmCongratulations!! on being No. One in PA.

March 28th, 2008 at 9:31 amMaryann - We have two brand new Duetto flavors out this year. Root Beer Duetto is our regular flavor addition to the Duetto line, and Chocolate-Coconut, which has Chocolate Soft Serve and Coconut Venice Ice, will take the place of Raspberry as a Limited Edition Duetto for this year. Don’t worry though, due to incredible popularity Raspberry is now a regular flavor!
March 28th, 2008 at 9:23 amI’m surprised to hear this was just announced. In my book, TH was always #1. I am disappointed though that I can’t find Cherry Orchard Sherbet at my favorite Giant anymore. I hope you are still making it because it is my absolute all-time favorite.
March 28th, 2008 at 9:16 amTo us TH is tops in Western Monmouth County, NJ and number one in our freezer

March 28th, 2008 at 8:48 amLouisiana’s got some Turkey Hill Lovers too! When I made the 2-day drive home for Christmas last year, I packed a gallon of Turkey Hill’s Limited Edition Baked Apple Dumpling (my all-time fave!) with me! Every time I stopped for gas, I checked on that ice cream and replenished the cooler’s ice to make sure it survived the journey home. The family was so impressed the gallon was gone in five days!

March 28th, 2008 at 7:49 amThank you all so much! We couldn’t be prouder. We still are that small Lancaster County dairy that we started as, we just have a lot more friends now!
We don’t make an ice cream flavor that is only milk chocolate, however milk chocolate ice cream is the base of some of our other flavors such as Box of Chocolates and Peanut Butter Chocolate Cup.

I for one, can certainly see how you acquired this honor. I live in the Pittsburgh area, and I was intoduced to your product just a few short years ago at a Spring Home & Garden show at your sample booth. The minute my husband and I tasted your vanilla sample cup, we were impressed. We learned that your products were being sold at our Shop ‘n Save stores. We picked up a few different flavors that day, and have been hooked ever since. You folks truly have a superior product.
