July is only five days away. It’s our favorite month of the year because July is National Ice Cream Month. That’s right, a whole month dedicated to celebrating the greatest culinary invention EVER. It’s so great, that when sliced bread was invented, everyone called it “the best thing since ice cream.”
Last year we celebrated National Ice Cream Month by doing some cool things here on the Ice Cream Journal and 2008 is no exception. This year we’ll spend July getting back in touch with our roots. That means you’ll see lots of entries about the history of Turkey Hill Dairy, but also about the history of ice cream and some glimpses of life here in Lancaster County.
As for the prizes…well, that’s the best part. Each Wednesday in July we’ll write about something in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Those weekly entries will include an authentic Lancaster County prize, which we’ll give away to one comment chosen at random from that entire week.
At the end of the month we’ll give away our grand prize: a package that includes a year’s supply of Turkey Hill ice cream, a one-night stay at a local Lancaster County bed & breakfast AND a personally guided tour of Turkey Hill Dairy by everyone’s favorite ice cream expert, Ernie!
We’re pretty sure it’s the biggest prize we’ve ever given away here on the Ice Cream Journal and we can’t wait for July to begin!

The last time we actually vacationed in Lancaster, our oldest son was 2. He is now 28 and just got married. Loved Amish country. We were so young then and my husband was an ice cream fanatic even then. Over the years i have become one too, I guess. Believe it or not we are not big night time eaters. When we come home from work, “dinner” is usually a coffee cup (or two) filled with ice cream.

I love Turkey Hill Ice Cream and I love Lancaster County. Its my favorite place to visit. There are great things to do! I’m still waiting for that tour of Turkey Hill, maybe someday it will be open to the public.

My annual (5th) ice cream social that I hold for the grandkids will be this Sunday, June 29th. It is an event that the kids look forward to each year when they get out of school. Of course, Turkey Hill Ice Cream is the one we use.

The Turkey Hill grand prize is really a grand prize as it would give me the opportunity to share this frozen desert with many of my senior friends at the Counsel on Aging. We had a sundae social in March and everyone loved the Turkey Hill Ice Cream served with chocolate sauce.

Hmmm So let’s see 2 1.5 litres Choc (Philly Style) every 2 weeks (4 amonth) for 12 months = 48 total + add 2 for my Birthday month (sept) + 2 for Turkey day (Nov) + 3 for Dec friends and family need their own (I don’t share all my stash) so that = 55 containers for just one year! Hubby and I just love Turkey Hill ice cream. Since discovering Graham Slam it has become our favorite flavor, we were drooling with anticipation awaiting its return this year. Ahhhhhhhhh picked up two containers this week! Our favorite destination is Lancaster County, we go there as often as we can. I think we could become a guide there, ha ha.

My family loves TH Ice Cream. I grew up in Berks County, and I really like the Duetto flavors. We’ve created our own little addition to them, by taking some Flat Earth Fruit Chips, like the Mixed Berry, crush them in our hands, and pour them ontop of the Raspberry Duetto Flavor. We also take the Lemon Duetto and add the Peach Mango Fruit Chips and do the same. The chips taste like ice cream cones, and but having it in a bowl, the ice cream doesn’t melt all over the sides of an ice cream cone and onto your hands. We would love to win a year’s supply of TH Ice Cream and stay in a local B&B. We are coming to Denver, PA for a wedding reception in August.
I live near the Turkey Hill dairy, but I’m on vacation in Colorado. I miss being able to get Turkey Hill ice cream while I’m here. But I was pleased to see that Turkey Hill iced tea is advertised prominently at some of the local mini-markets. It made it feel a bit like home. We, too, are imported from Lancaster County.
I’ll keep looking for Turkey Hill ice cream at the grocery stores here.

I need a bigger freezer. When it’s ice cream buying time we all have our favorite flavors. Luckily they are all different so when I feel like a bowl of sherbet I know it will be there because everyone else chooses something different. The amish country is our favorite vacation spot. We have been staying at the Quiet Haven for over 40 years.

Now that we have the second freezer, we’re able to stock up on LOTS of Turkey Hill Ice Cream, which is a good thing, since everyone in this family has more than one favorite! The tour of the dairy would be a real cool activity for the family, especially the kids. Every time we visit the Lancaster area, the kids get a kick out of pointing out the cows in the fields.

I love to share a “banana dango” with my family on a really warm night! I put a big scoop ( or Two ) of vanilla ice cream in a dish, and banana slices and hot fudge topping. Ad some chopped nuts and enjoy!

I haven’t met a Turkey Hill Ice Cream that I didn’t like. Your ice cream reminds me of my childhood, under the old oak tree at my Nanny’s house. She would make a freezer of homemade ice cream and we would all take a turn churning. It made those hot days of summer more bearable.

I would love to see a Turkey Hill Red Raspberry Ice Cream with dark chocolate shavings. If shavings wouldn’t be a possibility maybe a raspberry puree rippling through the ice cream. I think raspberries are probably too costly to make this happen. Shucks!! My 13 year old Poodle Pierre and I have Turkey Hill (most times) ice cream every night!

My favorite is the mango duetto. My son Nicholas chooses the mint chocolate chip. He likes the fact that it is white and not the standard green color. Why can’t I find Turkey Hill ice cream in West Virginia?
Our local grocery store wasn’t stocking the fat free versions of your ice cream or yogurts, and since we have health issues that’s all we can eat.
After many requests, I am very pleased to say they now stock a small selection. Better than what we had, so we can still enjoy that fabulous taste. Thanks for working so hard to keep our ice cream something we can still enjoy!

I still remember making peaches and cream ice cream with my Dad for the 4th of July when I was 10. When I was married I served Turkey Hill vanilla ice ceam with fresh peaches or hot peach cobbler to everyone’s rave revues.

I LOVE ICE CREAM!!! Turkey Hill is especially smooth and creamy. I eat it anytime I can. It does not last long around our house. I can’t wait to try the new Junior Mint! I’m sure it will be a new favorite.

Would love to win this prize. Just read in the newspaper about the expanding of Turkey Hill to NC. My son has been waiting for his favorite Turkey Hill ice tea to follow him there. He is so excited!! I could experience this same excitement if I would win this prize!!!!

One of my fondest memories of growing up in Selinsgrove, PA., was visiting my Grandma & Grandpa Herrold and helping them make homemade vanilla ice cream in their 1950′s style kitchen. Thanks to Turkey Hill, I’m able to return to that time & place each time I dip into a bowl of your vanilla ice cream. Although you’ll never bring back my grandparents, you do bring back the memories I have of them and those “deliciously wonderful” days. God Bless!

Turkey Hill Philadelphia Style is the only ice cream we buy for our family. Even though mint chocolate chip is our favorite, we can’t wait to try some new flavors! Please keep up the great job you are doing!
My all time favorite is Choclate Cherry Cordial but had to find a different flavor because when I would take it I would follow the fudge vein or keep digging out cherries and before you know it I would have demolished almost the whole container. Those fudge veins are just endless and gooey.

A trip to Lancaster and possibly free ice cream for a year what could be better? We took our son to Lancaster last summer and he had a blast. We also had free ice cream and iced tea at the Cherry Crest Adventure Farm where we tried to make a hay structure. We lost but had a great time.

I think July is my new favorite month of the year now since I learned I can now dedicate it and associate it with ice cream. I want to win the grand prize more than anything else. I cannot tell you how wonderful and more enjoyable my life would be knowing I can always come home and have a bowl of ice cream…at no cost. I would rave about Turkey Hill to all my friends, and recommend it to them and preach how lucky I was to win. Not to mention as a recovering anorexic, the added ice cream to my diet would help me gain the weight I need!

My husband grew up in Pennsylvania. He ate Turkey Hill ice cream by the gallon , so he says. I always thought he was kidding me because having never been to the North, until recently, I thought he was making it up. Now I know there really is Turkey Hill ice Cream.
