Let the celebration begin! Like we said last week, we’re turning the Ice Cream Journal into party central for National Ice Cream Month. We’ll feature a new entry every day, Monday through Friday, and we’re giving away some great prizes. Why? Because we love ice cream!
Each Wednesday we’ll give away a Lancaster County-themed prize and at the end of the month we’ll give away our biggest Ice Cream Journal prize ever: a one-night stay at a local Lancaster County bed & breakfast AND a personally guided tour of Turkey Hill Dairy by everyone’s favorite ice cream expert, Ernie! How will we choose the winners? The same we always do – by selecting comments chosen at random, so feel free to comment as often as you’d like!
With that, here’s a little history about National Ice Cream Month, as reported last year on the Ice Cream Journal:
National Ice Cream Month is a relatively new “official” celebration, even though most people have been unofficially celebrating ice cream during the hot summer months for more than a century. It all started in 1984, when President Ronald Reagan declared July as National Ice Cream Month and the third Sunday in July as National Ice Cream Day. As many of you may remember, Reagan was famous for his love of jelly beans, so it makes perfect sense that he’d be the president to pay homage to ice cream. At right is a portrait of the former president made from over 14,000 jelly beans!
P.S. – According to this website, today is “National Creative Ice Cream Flavor Day.” That means you have to try something unusual (sorry vanilla). May we suggest our new Limited Edition Junior Mints or some Chocolate and Coconut Duetto?

If you’ve got a technical question about the ice cream making process or some other inquiry about the nuances of America’s favorite treat, chances are Ernie has the answer. He might not be able to answer all questions, but he’ll try his best and some may be featured on the Ice Cream Journal.
I’m in love with the duetto vanilla soft serve and mango ice – but my nieces and nephews are going through an average of 3 gallons a week of the Philadelphia chocolate! whether there’s a game on or not!
I can’t stay on a diet because I crave ice cream at night. So I try to be good all day and reward myself with a (very) small bowl at night.
Don’t forget to visit our blog http://www.allthingsicecreamblog.com for your chance to win a free motorized ice cream cone!
How about some type of ice cream which includes coconut? Mmm, that sounds good!
Every month is ice cream month to me.
Can we get some banana?
Have you read the article about the first ladies of ice cream? From 1533!!! That is so interesting.
Over the years I have tried many flavors, but the best of all is Turkey Hill, top of the line. Egg nog, rum and raison, vanilla, black cherry. I eats a container before going to bet every night. This is not good but I love it. The best.
Nothing tops ice cream! Enjoy all your flavors!
Oh boy! Turkey Hill is on sale this week and they didn’t even limit it to 2 like they usually do.
I didn’t know that the third Sunday in July was ice cream day! The third Sunday this month starts my birthday week so I will be sure to extend that by eating Turkey Hill every day that week (as if I didn’t already). Still haven’t found the Junior Mint..can’t wait to try it and think about making a banana ice cream (just banana, maybe a little chocolate ribbon through it)!
Hot and humid next 2 days and we are stocked up on my favorite Turkey Hill flavor, good old reliable chocolate!!!
I spotted the Turkey Hill cow at my hometown supermarket this past weekend. I quickly got out my camera from the car and snapped a photo of Bo. He’s now posted on my freezer door and I smile at him everytime I go into the freezer for my container of Turkey Hill ice cream!
Too bad I don’t live in an area where I can go out and get Turkey Hill Ice Cream (SE Tennessee). At least our local grocery stores have recently begun to carry Turkey Hill Iced Tea, so maybe ice cream won’t be too far behind.
Went to a party yesterday and had cake and vanilla turkey hill icecream. I’m more into chocolate but enjoyable all the same!!!
WOW!!! What a great way to CELEBRATE NATIONAL ICE CREAM MONTH. I’m originally from Lancaster County, down by the river, now live in Lebanon county. My son is now 11, but when he was younger he would get excited when Columbia would have there parades and he would see the giant cow come thru or see the cow when we were driving somewhere. The only ice cream you will find in our freezer is Turkey Hill. It would be nice to win the Tour and YES of course the ICE CREAM!!..LOL My whole family loves the ice cream.
Hope Everone has a Wonderful Day!!
With every spoonful of Turkey Hill ice cream it brings back memories of the many trips our family has made to Lancaster County.
Well tomorrow is my birthday, the cake is in the oven and the chocolate Turkey Hill icecream is in the freezer! And to think I get gift too!!!
