Last week, we posted several answers from Ernie to questions posed by readers about cows (arguably the most important employee in the ice cream making process!). In this week’s edition of Ask Ernie, our ice cream expert will answer a few non-cow related reader inquiries. Remember, if you’ve got any ice cream questions of your own, feel free to ask Ernie using the link on the right!
JENNIE C. ASKS: Ice cream, ice cream everywhere!! Wow! How many states do you distribute to?
We’ve expanded a lot during the last year, adding 13 new states to our distribution list for a total of 24!
RUTH K. ASKS: Do you need any taste testers? I’m willing to travel!
I’ve got the taste tester duties under control here at the Dairy! Honestly though, I like to consider all of you official Turkey Hill taste testers. The best feedback we receive about our ice cream often comes from customers.
PEG CRAMER ASKS: Is there ever a “bad” batch of ice cream that doesn’t pass inspection? Who decides?
Turkey Hill has very stringent quality standards and each batch is tested for quality assurance purposes. The ingredients are all tested before the ice cream is made and then the first and last sellable package of each product run are pulled and cut so they can be checked for quality and consistency.
JACQUELINE ASKS: Is nonfat ice cream still fattening? If so, to what extent compared to the regular stuff?
That depends on what you mean by fattening. All foods can be fattening if eaten in large quantities. Our Light Recipe ice creams do have less fat and less calories than regular ice creams (and taste amazing, by the way), which does make them better for you. It’s like I always say, you can still enjoy treats like ice cream, but moderation is the key. I recently lost a lot of weight and have been able to keep the weight off, all while still feeding my ice cream habit!
MARY SHOEMAKER ASKS: If 70 people make the ice cream, where do the other 650 work?
The employees that don’t make ice cream work to make our drinks, load the trucks, drive the trucks (almost 150 drive trucks alone!), design the packages, pay the bills, and do countless other jobs to make those delicious drinks and ice cream.

If you’ve got a technical question about the ice cream making process or some other inquiry about the nuances of America’s favorite treat, chances are Ernie has the answer. He might not be able to answer all questions, but he’ll try his best and some may be featured on the Ice Cream Journal.
If you are in 24 states, which one of them is North Carolina, but are not in the area of the state where I live, when are you coming here. I have to stock up when I come back to Central Penna. Which is very difficult in the spring and summer to get ice cream back!So please come to the Piedmont of North Carolina – for I miss your wonderful TH ICE CREAM and LEMONADE!
Thanks for the great inside dish on your great tasting ice cream. I love Turkey Hill. When will it be in vegas?

I feel that Turkey Hill ICe CReam was born in USA. So you are #1 ice cream
Do you think Turkey Hill will give factory tours in the future???
After reading the other blogs I am very happy that Turkey Hill is in my area and I have converted some members of my family who, for some strange reason, always bought another brand until they had TH at my house. Now that’s all they buy and they are telling everyone how good it is!! Word of mouth is the best advertising.
everything in moderation, that’s easy, but sometimes a little extra Turkey Hill is better
Ernie I have a BIG question; Where is the Junior Mint ice cream??? I live in Staten Island NY and I have been looking since July 1st. Coconut Custard is brand new and its here…where’s the JUNIOR MINT!!! Thank you.
DOES THE TURKEY HILL COMPANY EVER A SHUT DOWN FOR MAINTAINCE???

Has Turkey Hill considered expanding to the West Coast?
Great information as always. Thanks!
I know Turkey Hill is available in Maryland – our local Giant food store has a freezer full of all kinds of flavors. I wonder how long it will be until they are sold out.
I am still looking for the coconut cream pie flavor in Western PA, if anyone knows where I can purchase this flavor, please let me know….thanks
I keep looking for limited edition Germ. choc. cake and coconut creame pie flavors. Did I just miss them somehow?
I can’t find the coconut custard flavor in my area (Rockland County,NY) Looking forward to trying it. Also, there was a yummy flavor called cranberry walnut a long time ago-any chance of it coming back? I believe it was out around Christmas.
I’m from L.I., and we also don’t have all T H flavors. What’s up? I thought NY was first for everything!!!!!
still cannot find the cocoanut cream pie flavor I am still on the hunt thought!
We live in Berks County, PA., and I still haven’t been able to find the cocoanut cream pie flavor! When can we expect it in our area?
Just wondering if when summer ends (almost there right now) will production of Duet be discontinued until next year? We love the raspberry/vanilla flavor and haven’t been able to find it at our Giant.
Why did you do it? Why did you finally lower the amount of ice cream in ALL your cartons to 48 ounces?
Why?
Moderation certainly is the key! It’s all about the amount of calories you burn versus the amount you consume. I’m big on lower fat items, but indulging in the regular varieties won’t hurt if you’re careful!
In response to Margaret’s comment about the power of word of mouth advertsiing, I say, “Right on!” It’s how I discovered Turkey Hill, and it’s not even available in my area!
