BAKED APPLE DUMPLING ICE CREAM IS HERE!

Welcome to autumn! A symphony of color mixed with crisp, cool breezes, fall is one of our favorite seasons. Fall means scarecrows, pumpkin pies, and of our favorite Lancaster County treats: baked apple dumplings. Peeled and cored apples in a blanket of flakey dough baked with cinnamon and sugar to bubbly perfection. Naturally we serve them piping hot with a scoop of Turkey Hill All-Natural vanilla ice cream on the side. While we were enjoying one (or two or three) of these a few falls back, we decided that baked apple dumpling would be perfect for a fall Limited Edition flavor and it’s been a hit ever since. Our fall favorite is back again – cinnamon ice cream with caramel apple swirl and real dumpling pieces. Enjoy!

We are looking forward to tomorrow’s yearly pilgrimage to a local restaurant for one of their apple dumplings. I hope we can find this ice cream in our area.

Place each apple in the centre of a pastry square. Draw up the edges of the pastry around each apple, brush the edges with water and press together to seal tightly.

Baking Place the apples in a loaf pan and sprinkle brown sugar, walnuts and raisins in the bottom of the pan. Pour about 1/2 cup cider over and around the dumplings. Cover with tin foil and bake in a preheated 350F oven for approximately 20 minutes. Pour in remaining apple cider and baste the dumplings with maple syrup. Recover and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes.

An apple dumpling is a pastry filled with apple, cinnamon and occasionally raisins. Apples are peeled and cored, placed on a portion of dough, then filled with cinnamon and sugar. Then the dough is folded over the apples and the dumplings are baked until tender.
Apple dumplings are more of a native food in the northeastern United States, around Pennsylvania. A very common recipe among the Amish, it is often eaten as a breakfast item, but they are also a very common dessert item after meals. It’s also popular to eat them with ice cream or in milk.

I just tried the new “Baked Apple Dumpling”. Wow! It’s so good. The cinnamon ice cream and graham bits were so tasty together. And the real texture of the apple piecess were a pleasant surprise. I’m a confirmed chocoholic, but so glad I ventured to try someting new.
