OCTOBER POLL: COMBINING FLAVORS (DO YOU DARE?)

Posted by: Turkey Hill Team

Last month we asked readers if they’ve ever travelled to Lancaster County. After all, it is our home and, though we may be biased, it’s absolutely one of the best places in all of Pennsylvania. Nine percent of you answered that you already live in Lancaster County (howdy neighbors!) and 26 percent said you visit several times each year. The good news is, 10 percent said they’ve never visited, but they plan to visit in the near future. We’re happy to have you!

This month’s poll is pretty simple and it’s inspired by something we talked about last week in our presidential ice cream entry. As you know, President Clinton is the only person ever allowed to break the Penn State Creamery’s rule against mixing flavors in the same cone or bowl. We want to know what you think. When it comes to scooping from multiple containers, are you for it or against it? Give us your answer on the right and some explanation for your position by leaving a comment below.

LOVE TO MIX DIFFERENT FLAVORS. USE TO WORK IN AN ICE CREAM STORE. I WAS ALLOWED TO EAT AS MUCH ICE CREAM AS I WANTED. IT WAS A PLEASURE TO TRY DIFFERENT MIXES TO SEE HOW THEY TASTED. I ALSO GOT TO EAT THE MISTAKES I MADE FOR THE CUSTOMERS????

I am a 8th Grader and How do you make different flavors of ice cream? Is there a website that could tell me how? Thanks in advance.

I always combine flavors “cause I can”t decide which one flavor to pick. Afterall, you make so many awesome flavors it”s impossible to choose just one!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bonnie wrote:

I always combine flavors. Afterall’ how could I settle on just one flavor when Turkey Hill makes soooo many great flavors!!!!!!

Dani wrote:

You know I don’t usually combine flavors, but that’s not to say I wouldn’t if the combination was right. I know that when I was a kid, I used to make my parents mad by eating the vanilla out of the middle of the neopolitan box. Although they were always amazed at how neatly I could do it without disturbing the chocolate and strawberry.

However, as it is a little cold lately for eating ice cream alone, I’ve been enjoying my Baked Apple Dumpling with hot baked oatmeal in the mornings! What a great excuse to have ice cream for breakfast!!!

My brother at one time got Vanilla, strawberry & black raspberry for his 4th of July special. Red, white and Blue.
me My favorite mix, is chocolate marshmellow and black raspberry. Tastes like chocolate covered raspberry.St

Mary wrote:

Making decisions has never been one of my strong points–especially when it comes to ice cream. It does depend on the flavors, but just like the potato chip ad says–I can’t eat just one!

Paula wrote:

chocolate or vanilla with anything usually works, but I’ll try any combination once!

Edie wrote:

Great idea! This way if someone doesn’t like a certain flavor he or she has another to choose. Me I like them all so I could try some of each.

Will you start mixing some of these (and other) combinations at T Hill? Sounds awfully delicious to me!

I’m a mixer and a dipper, I will mix up stuff whenever it fancies me and I will dip into things too. so yes I will mix two flavors and I will dip my cookies into my ice cream or my pretzels or my apple slices, need I go on?

When I attended UVA there was an ice cream shop there (no Turkey Hill, unfortunately) with offerings named after Shakespearean things. One of them was called “The Globe” and you needed lots of people to finish it – twelve scoops of ice cream and multiple toppings. We would order one for a group, start spooning and after a period stop and turn the bowl and start eating again. That way everyone got to taste all the flavors!

Donna wrote:

I agree with Judy, Chocolate mixed with orange sherbet is the best.

Patty wrote:

I love to mix ice-cream flavors. You get a unique taste made only for you.
I especially like chocolate marshmallow and strawberry cheesecake together!

My grandmother always gave us a special treat–chocolate ice cream and orange sherbet; when I have this, it brings back wonderful memories.

Sarah wrote:

Generally, I stick to one flavor of TH straight from my freezer, but when I’m someplace where they may not have TH, I try to mix peach and raspberry together.

Nancy N wrote:

Mostly a one flavor a day guy, usually put fruit on vanilla, then butter pecan, or another flavor different day.

Linda Leffler wrote:

I mix my flavors all the time. Right now I have 6 containers in my freezer. I have so many flavors and I can’t pick a favorite, I love them all. Linda

Having several flavors in the same dish is what makes it such a heavenly experience to eat ice cream! Why do the supermarkets run specials?, why did someone create the original banana splits with three flavors, why did the originators of frozen treats on sticks combine vanilla ice cream with orange to form creamsicles? Bring on the ice cream, the more flavors the better! Keep up the good work, Turkey Hill and keep introducing even more enticing flavor combinations!

Robin Ames wrote:

I love to mix ice cream flavors, provided they are in the same family. I wouldn’t mix a fruity flavor with a chocolately flavor, though. You have to be rational about this!

peg wrote:

Why not? Turkey Hill already combines chocolate and vanilla, as there is not enough space to name the others..I love to mix flavors if I have them in my freezer.

Variety is the spice of life!!!

Are you kidding? I eat my Turkey Hill with no less than three flavors at a time!

We love to make sundaes in a banana split dish so we can put 2 or 3 different flavors then toppings and of course whipped cream. It doesn’t get any better than that!

karen wrote:

Please! The Duetto coconut ice and soft serve chocolate is to die for! Actually, all of the Duettos I’ve tried are pretty darn good – so mux away!

Barbara Sulzer wrote:

We always have 2 flavors in the freezer. My husband picks one, I the other and we have a scoop of each every evening. This way we get to see what flavor the other one loves…and the cartons empty faster so we can choose 2 new flavors.

Carol Triano wrote:

My gosh, that is the joy of having choices…I love to mix flavors and so do the children…I don’t think we would have it any other way……

alicelynne wrote:

Usually the flavors are so great, I do’t have room in my bowl for ANOTHER flavor!!!

Christine wrote:

I love mixing orange sherbert with vanilla bean ice cream! My new combo of the week is coffee ice cream with strawberry ice cream! YUM!

Marti wrote:

I can’t imagine not having more than one flavor. It is my way of creating my own Turkey ice cream flavor! My ultimate job would be an ice cream tester and be able to create new combinations!

Lois S wrote:

Definitely, I always have at least 2 cartons of different flavors of Turkey Hill in my freezer all the time and use both of them together. Favorite? butter pecan and mud traks. Also, coconut and chocolate duetto

Jacqueline wrote:

I think mixing flavors is a great idea.
I love variety.

Stefanie Schmidt wrote:

I love mixing flavors because you can get a few spoonfuls of all your favorite. I like combining chocolate chip and rocky road for a great dessert.

Victoria C. wrote:

Yes! I like to have a scoop of chocolate chip mint with a scoop of coffee ice cream.

Beth Katz wrote:

At home I usually put only one flavor in the bowl. Tonight it was the Banana Split Light which isn’t as yummy as the normal Banana Split. Yummy, but not great. Banana Split combines flavors all in one box. Does that count?

If I’m buying a cone at an ice cream shop, I may have a chocolate something and a nut something. Some flavors definitely don’t go together.

It’s probably a no-no to mention here in Penn State country, but the University of Maryland in College Park has a dairy. There were many days when my now-husband-of-20-years and I would go to the dairy and get a cone of butter almond ice cream. It was a wonderful date.

Pat wrote:

I mix flavors on a regular basis. I can never make my mind up what flavor I want. This way I can have it all LOL! :)

Christina M. wrote:

Oh my gosh this is sooo up my alley!!!! My favorite thing to do is to eat multiple scoops of different flavors of ice cream!! I’m not a single scoop girl and I’m definitely a topping girl also!! The more flavors the better the more toppings the merrier!!!! This is my favorite blog question!!! It is necessary to have at least two different scoops at one time! Thanks TH, Love you!!!

barry wrote:

of couse we can mix flavors. we have too. there are too many flavors from which to choose!

Serving-Ice-Cream wrote:

Yup! I would definitely have to mix the flavors! There’s no way that I could possibly just decide on one flavor!
