FROM OUR FAMILY TO YOURS, HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

The iconic Normal Rockwell painting above, entitled “Freedom from Want,” is certainly appropriate for this time of year. It very much reminds me of my own family and many of the families and ideals that have shaped our home, Lancaster County. But no matter where you are this Thanksgiving, find thanks in the smaller things and everything around you. There are plenty of examples, if you just look hard enough.

On behalf of the Frey family and the entire Turkey Hill Dairy team, Happy Thanksgiving!

Warmest Regards,
Quintin Frey
President, Turkey Hill Dairy

SECOND SCOOP: STRANGE ICE CREAM LAW IN NEW JERSEY

Monday, November 24th, 2008

The following was posted on the Ice Cream Journal as a two-part entry in 2007 about an unusual ice cream law in Newark, NJ. By the way, here in Lancaster County, you’re allowed to buy, sell and eat ice cream whenever you want!

PART ONE

According to DumbLaws.com (and several other websites), in Newark, New Jersey it is illegal to sell ice cream after 6pm unless the customer has a note from his or her doctor.

We can’t imagine a medical condition for which the prescription is a double scoop of chocolate chip cookie dough, but whatever it is, it doesn’t sound too bad. Do you think Newark has ice cream addicts who forge prescriptions in order to satisfy their Sunday evening ice cream habit? We really hope it doesn’t come to that.

And what happens if a police officer catches a shop owner breaking the ice cream law? Do they take away your scoop? It’s funny to imagine the Newark Police Department setting up sting operations outside of suspected illegal ice cream vendors and barging in with badges and guns drawn, ordering everyone to “put your spoons on the floor and step away from the ice cream cone!”

PART TWO

In our last post we talked about the old Newark, New Jersey law that states that it is illegal to sell ice cream in Newark after 6 pm on Sundays unless the customer has permission from his or her doctor. It sounds pretty strange, so we did some poking around to find out if this outdated rule is still enforced.

None of the restuarants we talked to had even heard of the law. A few of them ended our conversation as soon as we mentioned the law and asked if they sold ice cream on Sunday evenings. Perhaps they were afraid we were a police informant of some sort. The New Jersey Restaurant Association was also unaware of the 19th century rule.

Before we ended our brief investigation, we went right to the source of the law’s enforcement: The Newark Police Department. There, we spoke with a clerk from the Laws Department who was unable to find any immediate record of the law, but agreed to fax us a form to initiate a more in-depth search.

So there you have it. The Newark ice cream law is probably on the books somewhere, but known by very few (and enforced by no one). We know that ignorance of the law is no defense, but in this case, we’re guessing what you don’t know, won’t hurt you.

THE 2009 TURKEY HILL CALENDAR PHOTOS HAVE BEEN CHOSEN!

Friday, November 21st, 2008

Way back in February we asked everyone to send us their best photos of loved ones (human or otherwise) enjoying Turkey Hill ice cream or iced tea. The best photos would be featured in our annual Turkey Hill calendar. The response was overwhelming. After sifting through hundreds of submission, we were finally able to narrow it down to 13 finalists – one for each month and one for the cover.

A big thanks to everyone who submitted pictures. It wasn’t easy choosing the 13 featured images because there were so many great photos to choose from. We’ve had many themes for the calendar over the years, from recipes to artistic renderings of Lancaster County, but this one is one of our favorites. That’s because it’s a reflection of the people most important to us: our loyal customers.

We think you’ll be pleased with the 2009 calendar and we know you’ll like the photos we’ve chosen for it. To give you all a sneak peak at what’s in store, below is the fantastic image we chose for the cover of the calendar. It was featured here on the Ice Cream Journal several months ago, and it was submitted by Matt E. of Douglas, MA (that’s his daughter, Jenna).

If you’d like to receive the calendar (it’s free!) please call 1-800-MY-DAIRY or email our customer service department using the “Contact Us” feature on the website.

LAST CHANCE FOR THANKSGIVING SHIPMENTS!

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

The subject line pretty much says it all. If you’re thinking about surprising a friend or family member who lives outside the Turkey Hill area of distribution with a shipment of ice cream or iced tea, tomorrow (Thursday, November 20) is the last day to order your products so that they’re delivered by Thanksgiving. To place an order — packed in dry ice and everything! — check out the Turkey Hill website here.

ASK ERNIE: HOW DO I INVEST IN TURKEY HILL?

Monday, November 17th, 2008

Julie P. from Ambridge, PA asks: I was looking to invest for the first time in the stock market and was wondering if Turkey Hill has a stock symbol. I am asking because I only eat Turkey Hill these days.

Thanks for your question, Julie. Turkey Hill itself isn’t a publicly owned and traded company and therefore has no stock for sale, but our parent company, Kroger, is publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol KR if you’d like to invest a bit in that.

I guess you could consider our ice cream and iced tea like stock. Every time you buy those products, you’re making an investment in Turkey Hill Dairy. And unlike the stock market, where you might lose money or wait a long time to see a profit, with our ice cream and iced tea you’re rewarded immediately!

On that note, I’m headed to the grocery store after work to make several investments of my own!

Best,
Ernie

THE HOLIDAY FLAVORS ARE HERE!

Friday, November 14th, 2008

‘Tis the season for special holiday flavors of Turkey Hill Ice Cream. Of course, we’re talking about our annual Egg Nog and Peppermint Stick varieties. The Egg Nog Premium Ice Cream is available in stores now (it has been for a few weeks) and the Peppermint Stick should be arriving on shelves very shortly (depending on your location). And if you’re an egg nog fan don’t forget to check out Turkey Hill’s egg nog drinks, which are also currently in stores.

Some of you may remember Rum Raisin was also, at one time, a seasonal flavor but due to popular demand it was added to the year-round line-up. Anyone want to vote to make Egg Nog or Peppermint Stick part of the permanent rotation?

DID YOU KNOW: THIS RECIPE DOESN’T SOUND HALF BAD!

Monday, November 10th, 2008

During World War II, when acquisition of wheat flour was difficult, quick thinking companies in Philadelphia made ice cream cones from crushed, sweetened popcorn.

TURKEY HILL ON WGAL

Friday, November 7th, 2008

As an active member of the community, Turkey Hill is involved in a lot of different sponsorships, especially when it comes to local sports. WGAL is the NBC affiliate serving the Harrisburg and Lancaster region and Turkey Hill is the sponsor of a program called “Football Friday.”

After two of WGAL’s Friday round-ups of local high school football news, the first person to call in wins a Turkey Hill Ice Cream party for their entire high school. The first Football Friday show takes place tomorrow night on WGAL (channel 3) from 11:35 pm to 12:05 am. We know it’s late, but when you’ve got a chance to win an ice cream party for an entire school, we think it’s worth staying up for!

NOVEMBER PRIZE: THE LAZY SUSAN ICE CREAM SERVER

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

November already? Wow. And what an historic one it’s shaping up to be. Regardless of you voted in the big election, at least we can all agree on one thing: ice cream. And nothing’s better for bringing people together than an ice cream party. That’s why we’ve chosen the Lazy Susan Ice Cream Server as the this month’s prize. One commenter at random from all the comments from November will be chosen to receive this party starter.
