12 DAYS OF ICE CREAM (DAY 2): ICE CREAM WRESTLERS

First of all, we’d like to say hello and welcome to all of our new readers this holiday season. We’re happy to have you! If you’d like to receive new Ice Cream Journal entries via email, feel free to enter your email address in the Subscription box on the right!

The inspiration for this story comes from a very cool and unusual ice cream blog that we check out now and then called “Ice Cream People.” Each entry contains photos and drawings of ice cream concoctions that have human qualities. Ice cones with faces, arms and legs…things like that, mostly from advertisements and artists.

Back in June, Ice Cream People wrote about a wrestling tag team duo called Los Ice Creams. The pair compete in the Chikara Wrestling League – a WWE-style league patterned after Mexican wrestling, but with events throughout Pennsylvania and the northeast U.S. As is customary in Mexican wrestling, competitors sometimes dress up in outrageous costumes and Los Ice Creams are no exception.

That’s a photo of one member of the team above. Like we said in our comment on the Ice Cream People blog, we’re not sure if this character looks intimidating or just funny. Either way, they’ve got their own t-shirts. If you’d like to buy a Los Ice Creams Shirt, check them out here.

TODAY’S PRIZE: A little Turkey Hill history is up for grabs here on the second day of ice cream. It’s the book, “Turkey Hill: A Family Vision,” a 64-page illustrated account of our humble beginnings, our modern day successes, and everything in between. One comment will be chosen at random from this entry to receive the book, which is also available on our website. Good luck!

  1. Judy says:

I wonder if anyone ever got poked in the eye wrestling with the guy with the cone on his head?!?!?

  2. Caren says:

This costume looks like it would be perfect for Mardi Gras.

  3. Nicole S-H says:

Hilarious! I wish the mask looked a bit more like a scoop of ice cream attached to that cone. Some sprinkles would be nice! LOL!

  4. Tris says:

What flavor is he supposed to be? How can he see? I have to agree with Judy-has anyone ever gotten poked in the eye?

  5. Delia says:

The guy looks kind of scary, but I do like the concept.

  6. Jennifer Cote says:

I think I may have nightmares. Hopefully they’re not about me not eating ice cream!

  7. Kratzy says:

While I agree the chosen ice-cream people picture looks scary, the ice cream people blog does has some much better pictures (less scary ones) on it. I like the picture of the cone from the Kalamazoo parade.

  8. Peter Mogish says:

Looks like a Circus Clown to me ! ;) )

  9. Charity says:

IT is amazing what is entertaining in our world today. WOW

  10. Vicki says:

The Ice Cream blog does have some interesting drawings. I don’t think I’ve ever met Ice Cream people.

  11. Nikki P says:

Ahhh, now I know how to dress my son up for next Halloween!

  12. Dave G. says:

An true “conehead” if there ever was one. Perhaps one of Dan Akroyd’s descendants?

  13. Mike says:

    Haha pretty weird

  14. Paula J says:

I would never think of an ice cream cone as a wrestler…..although I might wrestle a cone away from my husband if it was Turkey Hill Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough!

  15. JOHN HORN says:

HE LOOKS LIKE A REAL FRIENDLY CONE HEAD

  16. Lois says:

I would start wrestling a cone man from the head down just to eat the cone to see if it was filled with peanut butter mania. luv it

  17. Meghan Scannell says:

Yes the elaborate costumes to grab some attention and stares, and are mildly entertaining, but the Los Ice Creams can certainly take some better steps into increasing their fan base…Perhaps they could offer ice cream to their patrons during the wrestling matches. They could do it to make money by selling it, or offering it for free for season ticket owners or higher priority seating. Perhaps, an even better idea would be for Turkey Hill to sponsor them. They could advertise their new flavors with the teams which would increase publicity and serve as another mascot. Turkey hill could also attract and cater to a population of people (athletes specifically) who fear away from ice cream because they feel like it is unhealthy or counter-productive for training. They could contradict and correct false beliefs, advertise healthy low-fat yogurts and “light flavors” that won’t drag you down during practice or competitions. Or to attract another population of people (maybe the more eclectic), there could be a wrestling IN ice cream competition once a year. The possibilities are endless….but one thing is for sure…this wrestling team would become a LOT more popular is they had turkey hill backing them. I mean who could resist the delectably delicious tasty treats that turkey hill has to offer?

  18. Erum says:

looks scary to me, might give childern nightmares

  19. Virginia says:

Hey I’m all for advertising ice cream, but there is a reason he has a FULL mask on his head & it’s NOT for safety. That costume is terrible.

  20. Joan Deal-Haun says:

    The book sounds very interesting.

  21. John Deal says:

  35. Joanne says:

Well, I must say that I would surrender to the ice cream cone guy without much of a fight. I would be too busy laughing my head off! I wonder where they ever came up with the idea for such a costume.

Perhaps they could use some Turkey Hill ice cream and then they wouldn’t want to scare people with that ice cream look……

  40. jp22874 says:

cool but a little over the top for my taste. The book sounds great! It is always nice when people stop and think of where they have come from and share that with everyone.

  41. Glenda Steffee says:

I wonder if the weird outfit is supposed to cover the fact that they are terrible wrestlers? I mean – has anyone outside of their immediate families every heard of them? Still, I wouldn’t want to open my door on Halloween night and find them there! As for the prize, if I win, will I have to take a test on the history of Turkey Hill after I read it?

  53. Gisele Phipps says:

I love to read. A telemarketer called yesterday to sell me some magazines. She tried to make me believe first that she was doing a survey. She asked me what I liked to read. I told her books — the thicker the better. She asked about magazines and I told her that I hate magazines. There is not enough depth and breadth to them. She hung up quickly enough. I love to read on any topic and my book habit ties with my Turkey Hill habit for using up my discretionary income.

  54. Michelle J. Barboru says:

This costume is pretty scary! Kids have enough problems being afraid of clowns, now they’re going to make them nervous about ice cream?

  55. Helene Harris says:

you ask if he is intimidating or funny -
yes, he’s funny but i wouldn’t want to mess with him in the ring!

    “I’m suppose to be a wrestler…hard as nails…, not a drippy, ozziing soft-serve.”

    “Oh my life’s alot a nuffin…”

  90. brenda says:

I love the picture of the ice cream cone man. I think he look more like a pineapple ice cream with everything in it or He can be a lemon ice cream too.
He look cute in that ice ceam mask with the cone on the top.

  91. Jennifer says:

I agree I don’t wether to be intimidated or to just burst out laughing. I guess either reaction would be in their “flavor”

“Mr. Conehead” is a little weird, but the book sounds interesting.
