Who doesn’t love the ice cream man? Even in December, he could send kids scrambling into the house for loose change. A while back, we talked briefly about the disappearance of the ice cream man and reflected on the music he’d play from that megaphone attached to the roof of his truck full of frozen treats.
TODAY’S PRIZE: That iconic ice cream man music can now be yours, thanks to Michael Hurst’s “Songs for Ice Cream Trucks” CD. The disk of ice cream man tunes contains 13 tracks, including classics like “The Popsicle Parade,” “The Moose Track Shake,” and “Where Do Ice Cream Trucks Go in the Winter?”
We listened to a few samples from this CD (you can too at the link above) and liked it so much, we bought one to give away during the 12 Days of Ice Cream to one commenter chosen at random from this post.

I am thirty-one years old, and I still get excited when I hear the ice cream truck.
An ice cream man drives around our neighborhood and now actually stops outside our house because he knows we’ll be out to get the goods.
I used to teach in a school down the street from the ice cream truck garage. Every ice cream truck had to pass under my windows to get out on their route. Since we didn’t have A/C, we’d be serenaded/tortured with the ice cream truck music all day. The second we got released for recess, we all ran into the school yard with our money and stuck dollar bills through the gate. The ice cream truck drivers would walk back and fourth across the sidewalk to sell us goodies. I think I gained 10 pounds that year! LOL!
I liked the Sprinkle Twinkle song. It didn’t have as much melancholy as the other tracks. It’s even a great name for a Christmas cookie dough ice cream flavor!
Hearing the ice cream truck always makes me smile. I wish there was a Turkey Hill truck in my neighborhood.

I Started hearing the Mister Softee song 52 years ago and still get excited when i hear an ice cream vendor weather is,s on the roadway or on the beach at the shore
The Ice Cream Man can be three or four blocks away but a kid will hear that jingle. In fact,if you have a dog, the kid will be up and on his feet before the dog’s ears start twisting in the air to pick the sound.
It’s almost super-natural. It’s like human radar. Perhaps there’s a special high pitch that ice cream men utilize that only a kid can hear. Maybe these ice cream jingles are especially designed to cloak these high pitched summonings. Maybe Michael Hearst is actually an agent for the international brotherhood of ice cream venders. Maybe it’s a conspiracy of the government to stimulate the economy with child ice cream sales that are brought about with subliminal suggestions in the form of ice cream jingles. And…

I liked the Today show video. I have to say, though, that I like the fact that the ice cream truck still plays the same song! Brings back great memories. The one that comes thru my neighborhood always plays “Do Your Ears Hang Low”.
Ice cream trucks mean great treats. The music is just part of the pleasure, and it helps to locate the truck, too!

I saw my first ice cream truck when I was 20 years old. I lived out in the country so I didn’t even know they existed as a child.
I also can quickly recognize the song of the ice cream truck and still marvel at how my kids also can hear it blocks away.

We still have an ice cream truck come by every day in the summer at 2:00. It brings back memories for me as a kid but now my own kids get to enjoy the same thrill as I did when I was a kid. We love the ice cream truck!!

If you remember the Eddie Murphy skit picture 5 of us like dogs screaming for ice cream. We would grab our piggy banks, kick, bite elbow to get the change that fell between the cracks of the leather couch, and the same procedure would follow to get out the door to beat the kids from the Clancy, Delea, Doyle, Friedman, and Hopkins households, 13 kids, 9 kids, 7 kids, 6 kids and 5 kids respectively. Stickball, swimming, ice hockey, baseball, basketball we would have full teams co ed with each family having 2 different people specializing in a different sport. The ice cream man would hit our block fully stocked and leave to get more supplies. I still smile when I hear that ring. Hey TH what about a chocolate ecclair with a crunchy cookie swirl?
I’d like to know, Where do Ice Cream…Trucks Go in the Winter?
Everytime I hear the familiar Row, Row, Row your Boat tune I get excited and want to start looking for change so I can run out and get a Nutty Buddy Ice cream cone. We still have this old time ice cream truck that once a week comes through our neighborhood. I still get excited and start running for the truck! I have a friend who insists We start our own ice cream business! Maybe one day!
Brings back great childhood memories…my friends and I swimming in the backyard pool…hearing the ice cream truck blocks away….jumping out of the pool and lining up at the corner for the cool tasty treats.

I love hearing the ice cream truck music. It takes me back to my childhood days at the beach. Eating slow enough to savor the flavor but as fast you could so it didn’t drip away.

When I was little, the ice cream truck would only make a ding, ding sound (actually just like the timer on Mom’s stove). My dog would get excited no matter if it was the ice cream truck or the stove timer.
I grew up in the country next to a dairy farm and never knew what an ice cream truck was until I married and moved to the “city”. My husband had to explain to me what the ice cream truck was because he grew up in the “city” and he use to use his allowance to buy ice cream when the ice cream truck came around. We still have an ice cream truck that comes around our neighborhood and when I hear the music I know it’s summer!!!!

Our local ice cream truck drives thru our neighborhood all summer long about dinner time,the music echoes from his truck.
Sad thing is, I live on a busy road, so I rarely see the ice cream truck, but I always hear the music.

Wow, that CD looks awesome. I remember the ice cream truck coming every day in the summer and NEVER ONCE did I ever get to buy an ice cream. Sigh.
Like Joanne, I saw the ice cream truck but never got money for an ice cream treat. “Too expensive” was my mom’s comment. Years earlier, I did get 7 pennies to buy an ice cream bar (we called them “chocolate covers”) from an ice cream vendor on a BICYCLE with a freezer on the front cooled by dry ice. We’re talking about 1950!
We’re lucky. We’ve got an ice cream man that lives two doors down!!!! I’m surprised the poor guy didn’t move out after 1/2 the neighborhood went knocking on his door when they realized where he lived!
When i was litter we had no money for ice cream.I didn’t understand why other kids could get ice cream and not us.Now that i’m older and not as poor we have family ice cream partys. No one should go with-out so we give to the familys that need alittle LOVE.

In our town there was an ordinance that banned ice cream trucks. But a young man here fought city hall and got the ban removed. But I’ll stick to you Turkey Hill, thanks.
I just learned that my 16 year old and my 20 year old are both pregnant. I would love to win this CD to drive them crazy in a few years once I introduce their children to the joys of the ice cream truck. This sounds like a great grandparent revenge — so the grandchildren will bug their parents to buy them things like they did to us!

This is so COOL! What a great CD to pop in with the kids in the car (or without even!). I love to hear the ice cream truck coming and trying to guess what street it’s on before it comes to ours. It’s part of the background noise of summer. The kids will stop whatever they’re doing to see the ice cream truck…will run out in their swimsuits dripping wet…everything stops for the ice cream truck!

When I was a young boy [1940s] a very old man and his wife would drive into the neighborhood in a silver painted panel truck. There was no music or jingle jangle, just wonderful sugar dusted waffles with a slab of ice cream inside. I think about those good times often.
It will remind me of my childhood waiting for the ice cream truck to come along. Now, my grandchildren would believe me, if they hear it, about my childhood memories.
One could really torment their kids with this if they wanted to.
As a child the ice cream truck did not play songs. It had a bell which the driver pull a string so all could hear. My hubby in the early 1960′s was a Good Humor man. He had the white open front truck with the bell. He loved it seeing the smiles on the children’s faces when they bought their ice cream and always let then ring the bell. He did it for about 2 months between graduating from college and entering basic training to keep busy. Those days they got clean white uniforms and worked on commission.
My kids would love it.
When I was growing up I only remember once hearing an ice cream truck and that was when we were visiting my Grandmother in town. No we didn’t get any. We didn’t have the money and it didn’t register with us what an ice cream truck was, so we didn’t fuss.

What a fantastic idea! I wish I’d thought of it. Great for reliving memories or just adding a fun touch to on iPod mix. We have a great jingle here in Williamsburg, Brooklyn – the neighborhood “Kool Man” trucks have a signature sound like no other I’ve heard anywhere in the country. It starts off…(knock), (knock), (knock), “HELLO!” in a maniacal female child robot’s voice, then the music kicks in. Makes me want a Kool treat just thinking about it!
Remember the ice cream man and his musical truck. He could be heard a few streets away. Gaves us time to beg mom for money to buy a cone.
This brings back wonderful memories from my small hometown when the ice cream truck came on the street(it was a Good Humor truck with no Turkey Hill but the only one we had). I clearly remember our dog Buff who was as excited as we were when the truck came because my Mom always bought him his own popsicle(he also loved the stick).

The “goodie bar man” as we called him stopped at the corner one house from mine. He would play his music until every kid in the neighborhood arrived. Our house was the closest to the corner and we (my brother and sister’s and I got there before anyone else). We could get our treat, walk home, finish amd be ready for bed and the music would still be playing. He always came right before dark so if there were enough kids there, his music would be our bedtime song. What a wonderful memory. Wish my daughter had one like it instead of driving to the nearest DQ.
When we were kids and staying with grandma in the summer, we would wait for the ice cream truck, with our change as we sat on the porch steps (stoop as she called it). No matter if you called it a porch or a stoop, it was the place to wait for the ice cream man to pull up in front of the house all through the summer. It was great you bought an ice cream bar or other such novelity for a quarter – yes a quarter. Popsicles were only fifteen cents. We also had a chance to win a free ice cream treat if you were the one to lick clean the lucky stick. And that is if you still had your change because Grandma’s steps had a big crack in them and most of us could not sit still long enough to wait for the ice cream man and would drop our change down the crack which you would never get back out. Can’t remember if I ever won but I do know that I lost alot of change in those steps never to be seen again. Years ago of wonderful memories.
It reminded me when my daughters were little and as soon we heard that music, we were all out buying ice cream. We all are Ice Cream’s Lovers. So far I did not see any truck were I live now in Pine Grove, PA

I used to get goodies from the ice cream man when I was little. Such a treat! Now, there is an ice cream truck that drives through the neighborhood but the driver has a smarmy look to him. I’m not brave enough to buy from him. So far my kids haven’t bugged me too much about it. I keep our freezer stocked with ice cream treats so I’m sure that helps.
We hear the Mr. Softee go by the house every day in the summer. It does bring back lots of memories of a simpler life.
Two of favorite things are music and ice cream.
The music of the great ice cream trucks, are silent in our area, any more, they only remind us as a sweet reminder of yesterday. But, every time we eat ice cream from our local Turkey Hill freezer, the ice cream truck music is still on our minds.
How much more summer can you get than the music from the ice cream truck. Right now in Cleveland its about 20 degres with snow so anything to remind me of summer is welcome.
I remember the ice cream truck coming on Tues and Sat nights. I always got a double dip of butter pecan and chocolate with the chocolate on the bottom. One dip was 10 cents. My oldest daughter was only a few days old and I came over 20 miles just to get my ice cream. There was no music, just a bell he rang.

Hearing the original ice cream truck song reminds me of my grandmother’s house in the city. The ice cream man, as we called him would come around every day in the summer. We were poor so we only got some for a special occasion, usually when aunts and uncles came to visit. My cousins and I had more grown-ups to beg for the money!!!
There is an ice cream truck or two that still swing by where I am living in the summertime, and they play the old-fashinoned music.
These ice cream truck songs are completely different from the one that drives around in our neighborhood. As long as I can remember, it has always plays the entertainer by Scott Joplin. I remember it going by every summer and everyone gets excited.

We still have a Mr. Softy truck that comes around all summer and if its still nice out also in the fall. The woman that has it is a nice person, friendly, and always happy. I can remember that truck coming around when I was small and it was a wonderful sound.And it still is today with great memories attached !
At 60 years old I’m still tuned into the music of the ice cream truck! My husband also drove one when he was younger.
We still have ice cream trucks here in the summer and when I hear it coming, it brings back memories of when I was a child. Only once in a while would we be able to buy a treat and we thought that was heavenly! When my kids were growing up I had the rule of once a week from the truck so that stopped the begging of every night! I love the fact that now I can just go to my freezer and have TH ice cream any time I want it.

When I was little I would rock in my rocking chair. Mom and Dad said when I heard the music from the ice cream truck getting closer I would rock faster and faster. Fortunately, since we spend a lot of time at the beach, the kids still get to see and hear the ice cream truck. Unfortunately, the ice cream isn’t as good as yours.

Unfortunately on campus here at Ithaca College we have to pay for our internet, so of course as a poor college kid I buy the cheapest option, but this means super slow dowloads, uploads and page navigating. I clicked on the youtube play button and it took 3 minutes just to load 2 seconds of the song clip! Being the ice cream fanatic I am, I actually waited for the whole thing to load…3 hours and 47 minutes just for 2 minutes and 41 seconds of music….Lucky for me I had a bowl of ice cream while I was waiting, and caught up on my journal blogging, and played a few “catch the cow games”. As for commenting on the tunes…they are pretty catchy…what I would LOVE to see made into and “ice cream remake” is the song “Ice Ice Baby” by Vanilla Ice. But instead the song should say “Ice Cream Baby” Can you imagine how entertaining the music video would be? Turkey hill could make it amazing and maybe have the cow shown singing it, wearing some bling and cool clothes as he raps. And yes, I too do wonder where the ice cream man has gone. Does he now know he would make millions driving around college dorm living?!
