12 DAYS OF ICE CREAM (DAY 7): MILLIE THE CAT

Posted by: Turkey Hill Team

Many of you may have noticed that we forgot to post an entry yesterday. Sorry about that. But the good news is, that means we’ll be posting THREE entries (which means three prizes) in the next 48 hours in order to get all of our 12 Days of Ice Cream entries published before December 25!

Thanks to Lee C. from Philadelphia, PA, for sending us this photo of “silly Millie” enjoying some Cherry Duetto. Lee says licking the bottom of the Duetto carton is one of Millie’s “favorite things to do.” Funny thing is, for a lot of us here at the office, it’s our favorite thing to do, too!

NOTE: Because some dogs and other pets are prone to lactose intolerance, care should be taken when feeding your pet ice cream. Like most “people food” treats, moderation is the key. Talk to your veterinarian if you have questions about your pet’s ability to eat ice cream.

TODAY’S PRIZE:  The soft and cuddly little guy on the right is today’s prize for one commenter chosen at random from this entry. He’s the Ice Clown Plus from a company called Evil Ice Cream. The name may sound ominous, but they actually make a variety of very cute toys!

My son and I try our best not to let any TH go to waste. My husband was a dog handler for twenty years in the service. We don’t have any pets, but I’m sure if we did they would get a taste of ice cream once in a while.

I don’t have a cat, but I use my fingers to make sure I get all the ice cream out of the seams on the bottom of carton.

Gloria wrote:

My sister “Millie” loves cats (has two) and loves Turkey Hill ice cream, too. I wonder if she shares her ice cream with her cats. I’ll have to ask her.
I’ll pass on the stuffed animal. It probably wouldn’t get along with all my penguins.

Lydia D. wrote:

That is a cute picture but my dog which is a german shepherd mix loves to lick out the cartons and gets her head stuck because she really gets inside the carton. When she is done it is like there wasn’t any ice cream in the carton at all. She would love to have that toy to carry around and as long as it dosn’t taste or smell like your ice cream she won’t chew it.

Paula wrote:

I would not go so far as to stick my head in the carton to lick it out, but I do get every bit my spoon can find. The ice cream that hides in the cracks at the bottom of the box? THAT is EVIL ICE CREAM!

brenda wrote:

Hi Turkey Hill And fans,
I love the picture of the cat. I love cat and mille look so cute in that picture. I like the prize for this time too. Like everyone say…a taste of or lick on the spoon is not goign to hurt them..please check with veterinary first befroe you give any pet any kind of ice cream.

Joni R wrote:

Cute photo. I never had a cat but would always give my dogs ice cream, esp. in hot weather. Just make sure it’s not chocolate, they’ll get sick.

I love the stuffed toy and know a little girl who would be crazy about it. I also loved the cat picture. At my daughter’s home it’s the two German Shepards who wait patiently for “Mom and Dad” to finish their ice cream so they can each lick a bowl.

Karen Cohn wrote:

Love the photo!

Bernadette wrote:

Yes, my Aussies compete for the chance to clean out the carton. One gets the lid, I have to make sure there is ample ice cream on it, and the other the container……. We humans of course love Turkey Hill Ice Cream….. keep it coming.

Susan wrote:

My cat, Cricket, also likes ice cream so I have to hurry and put the bowl away before she can get to it. She’s a bit overweight. She’d probably love the toy.

Lori wrote:

Evil and Ice Cream, now that doesn’t sound right! Glad the dog figured it out but isn’t that a waste of good ice cream? ha!

Ice Cream is not evil..we love it so how can it be evil?

Peg Cramer wrote:

I go to FreeKibble(DOT)com daily to learn facts about dogs and cats, and to donate food to shelter animals. I learned that cats do not have taste buds for “sweet” so I guess Millie is tasting the milk in the ice cream.

Tamika wrote:

Wow! Seems like ice cream would be too cold for a cat..?..

Craig Kurtz wrote:

Everyone screams(meows, barks) for ice cream. Our beloved Minnie could be anywhere in our home but all you had to do was take the Turkey Hill box out of the freezer and she would be at your feet. She has gone on to heaven but our other cat Tigger cries for it too. And lets not forget the Oliver the dog who sits and waits for his taste.

Margaret M wrote:

That really is a cute picture of Millie. Those who are worried about ice cream for pets, I’m sure the little bit that’s left in the carton should be a safe amount. I always let my cat lick it and have never had any problems.

Lucy T wrote:

My granddaughter just loves stuffed animals. I could give her that and ice cream too, Turkey Hill, of course

Kimberly L wrote:

My dog loves vanilla ice cream. Although I am very cautious of how much he gets, and when he gets it. He only gets a few licks. But boy does he enjoy it. Love the picture.

Lori wrote:

I never thought to share ice cream with my dog. I’m sure she would love it

mary anne kazlauskas wrote:

every dog and cat i have ever had has shared our ice cream of the day. the one memory that stands out, is momma cat, who lived to be 21. she had her own little dish and when she saw ice cream being dished out, she would twine around your feet and meow until she got it. she wasn’t too partial to chocolate, but went crazy over butter pecan.

That is a really adorable picture. I always thought cats could enjoy milk products, but my daughter-in-law who has always had cats insists not. I guess it all depends on the cat. Obviously, the one in the picture doesn’t have a problem. Lucky Cat!

Meghan Scannell wrote:

This picture is super adorable. And yes, most things in moderation are good for dogs, so ice cream can certainly be served to dogs. However chocolate ice cream should never be given to dogs, because chocolate is poisonous to most animals (human’s just have a very high tolerance but still could die from eating too much, although they would likely just get sick and puke it up). Chocolate can cause arrhythmias in the heart and worms for dogs and it contain caffeine, theobromine, or theophylline, which can be toxic and affect the heart and nervous systems.. Vanilla is certainly a safe flavor. Low fat versions should be avoided as well though because the artificial sweeteners are not easily digested by dogs and can be toxic. Ice cream treats are even available in most local grocery stores called “frosty paws.” Too much ice cream can be a problem though because it is harder for dog’s digestive systems to process and break down a lot of dairy as they have less of the essential enzymes for lipid digestion. Also they have small amounts of the enzyme lactase, which breaks down the lactose in milk. This can result in diarrhea. Lactose-free milk products are available for pets. But yes, letting your dog lick the top of your ice cream cone or sundae will not harm him/her, and they sure lick their lips after so you know they are enjoying it!
