12 DAYS OF ICE CREAM (DAY 10) – ASK ERNIE: YOU SAY GELATI, I SAY GELATO
Posted by: Turkey Hill Team
CYNTHIA G. OF COLMAR, PA, ASKS: I took the opportunity to “sample” lots of gelato (with whipped cream) while on a recent trip to Italy. The flavors and texture seem very different from ice cream. What makes them so different?
Italy?! I’m jealous. Gelato (or gelati) is delicious and you’re right, the texture is a lot different. Gelato is denser than ice cream because it contains less air. It’s also made with whole milk with less butterfat than most ice cream, which can also affect the feel and texture.
If you like gelato, you might like our Duetto! The soft serve ice cream in Duetto is inspired by gelato and the flavored ice in Duetto is patterned after Italian ice! It might not compare to REAL Italian gelato, but it’s the next best thing!
Thanks!
Ernie

December 28th, 2008 at 10:47 amYour Duetto flavors are great! ….as are all the Turkey Hill Flavors!….Although my son says NO ice cream anywhere compares to your Chocolate Chip Mint!

December 26th, 2008 at 4:32 pmWhere can I buy Gelato, so I can compare it with the Duetto?
December 26th, 2008 at 3:10 pmI first tried gelato back in the 70’s while on a Med cruise when I was in the Navy. Some great eating while we were over there.
December 26th, 2008 at 12:31 pmWhen my daughter was in Italy a couple of years ago I think she lived on gelato. I know one day she ate four servings!
December 26th, 2008 at 10:56 amOur first taste of it was in the King of Prussia mall and it was yummy.
I love the Duetto’s from Turkey Hill. They are delicious!

December 26th, 2008 at 9:18 amWe love it all
December 26th, 2008 at 1:12 amMerry Christmas everyone! Thank you Lord for ice cream!!!
December 26th, 2008 at 1:10 amI don’t care what flavor it is……… if God made anything better than Turkey Hill, He kept it for Himself.’Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah.
December 26th, 2008 at 1:03 amHowever you say it. It tastes great. Thanks Turkey Hill
December 25th, 2008 at 11:43 pmActually, I don’t like gelato but I really like Duetto. The play set would be a big hit with the kids. Happy, Healthy and Safe Hilidays to all.
December 25th, 2008 at 11:23 pmWELL I LOVE ALL KINDS OF ICE CREAM. YUMMY YUMMY!
December 25th, 2008 at 10:14 pmViva Italia!!!
December 25th, 2008 at 10:04 pmViva Dueto!!!
THE SCOOP- NOTHING BEATS TURKEY HILL DUETTO!
December 25th, 2008 at 10:03 pmYes Cynthia, I also recommend you try the Duetto brand from Turkey Hill. I must admit, I was skeptical of it at first, and preferred the over 20 flavors of hard ice cream with many add ins and swirls of goodies, but when I got a free coupon to try the Duetto for free I couldn’t pass up the offer. And let me tell you I am so glad I did. It is the perfect combination of melt in your mouth icey swirl, and soft super creamy ice cream. It really does melt in your moth, coating your tongue with a sugary blanket, and leaving a lingering tingle. The soft serve does taste richer, but smoother too. Its so hard to get the super creamy soft serve ice cream, but Turkey Hill manages it. You could even leave it out for the freezer for 10 minutes before serving it, and it will be the perfect consistency. Yum, yum yum. And since I am recommending, I have to say that the coconut duetoo with the chocolate ice cream is my personal favorite. Its simply fabulous! The consistency is thicker and closer to gelato, but still has the delectibly delighting dessert treat taste of Turkey Hill.
December 25th, 2008 at 9:53 pmWell, I’ve never been to Italy, so I will have to give Duetto a try. Thanks for the tip!
December 25th, 2008 at 7:28 pmWhether scooping ice cream or duetto, the Turkey Hill scoop works the best. Much better then the other expensive scoops I have from culinary stores. A Turkey Hill scoop and a Turkey Hill gift certificate make a GREAT gift combo for ANY celebration.
December 25th, 2008 at 7:22 pmI love the raspberry and lemon duette other than chocolate marshmallow I will buy those. A mango coconut duet would really taste good. What a cute playset but I think the kids would like to play with the real thing because it tastes great.
December 25th, 2008 at 6:34 pmBeen to Italy and the gelato is awesome
December 25th, 2008 at 6:25 pmDuetto is awesome too. I live in western Pa. near Pittsburgh but haven’t been able to find the Chocolate Coconut Duetto. Just wondering TH, if you distribute that flavor in our area?
Tried the rootbeer and vanilla ice cream It is the best
December 25th, 2008 at 5:34 pmWe love Duetto at our house!
December 25th, 2008 at 4:01 pmLove it All.
December 25th, 2008 at 3:37 pmWe have a local store that specializes in gelati. It’s that type of ice cream that is good for a once in awhile treat i.e. if you want to try something different. But I will stick to Turkey Hill when I want something on a daily basis.
December 25th, 2008 at 3:09 pmHaven’t been to Italy to compare, but am more than satisfied with Duetto chocolate and coconut. UMMMMMMM!
December 25th, 2008 at 2:56 pmI loved the information!
December 25th, 2008 at 2:23 pmI love the Turkey Hill Vanilla soft serve with cherry Venice Ice, which is what is in my freezer right now. It’s great to serve at this time of the year! I like the one that tastes like creamsicle also. Nice combination. The childs ice cream set would be perfect for my granddaughter as she has a play kitchen in her play room.
December 25th, 2008 at 2:03 pmI’m always looking for something new to try and here it is.
December 25th, 2008 at 1:43 pmThanks for the info.

December 25th, 2008 at 12:06 pmI LOVE the Duetto…one of my favorites. My daughter spent 3 weeks in Italy and had the “real” Gelato which was out of this world according to her! The kit looks like it would keep a child busy with hours of fun!

December 25th, 2008 at 9:57 amDuetto is great! Merry Christmas to all
December 25th, 2008 at 9:33 amI LOVE the Lemon Duetto,,, so light & delicious,, specially in the summer. I guess I can only imagine what REAL gealato tastes like. But I’ll be happy as long as there’s Turkey Hill ice cream in my freezer!
December 25th, 2008 at 9:26 amMerry Christmas to all!
I’ve had Gelatto several times and really enjoyed it. I’ll try the Duetto and compare. Usually I buy nonfat frozen yogurt, but variety is healthy.
December 25th, 2008 at 9:13 amI love the Duetto, right now I have chocolate with coconut and vanilla with cherry. It is very refreshing in the summer but can be enjoyed all year round but of course, I always have to have regular TH ice cream too.
December 25th, 2008 at 9:07 amMERRY CHRISTMAS to everyone at Turkey Hill and to all the bloggers.
Duetto is wonderful! I love gelatis.
December 25th, 2008 at 8:54 amItalian water ice is also much different from our American version.
December 25th, 2008 at 8:48 amFirst Carolina Welcome, I must say it was refreshing to find someone more loqocious than I.
December 25th, 2008 at 8:48 amAs far as I know sundae glasses are expensive. I lucked out and was given 4 last year for christmas. 4 different family members scoured Garage Sales, store closings, freecycle and Friendly’s. The last place gave my Uncle an Outlet for Restaurants there was 1 left because the style had changed, it was $12. My Aunt picked up one at a Maine garage sale $ 0.50. My brother got one from Freecyle $0.00. And my best friend got one for $2.00 at Odd-Job going out of business sale. Funny thing all 4 are a perfect match! Merry christmas all I’m enjoying some Nutty Neapolotan with choc crunchies with a chase of Mango from Duettos.
Remembering my 6 months in Sicily where all I did was Manga Manga con amore.
Duetto is delicious…love the raspberry!! Merry Christmas everyone!!
December 25th, 2008 at 8:36 amI have not tried Turkey Hill Duetto…but Ill make it my New Year’s resolution to!
December 25th, 2008 at 8:28 amTurkey Hill Duetto is great. I think I tried all the flavors that are out there. Thank God I have a TH Store about 5 min. from my home. This prize is great, the ice cream looks so real. Thanks Turkey Hill for the best product on the market. Linda
December 25th, 2008 at 8:20 amIt’s all good ,Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays all

December 25th, 2008 at 8:16 amDuetto is the perfect summer treat and today’s prize is the perfect summer toy when my grandchildren are old enough to come and stay with grandma and grandpa.
December 25th, 2008 at 8:08 amGelati…gelato….tomato…tomata……However you say it, it’s all good. Let’s just eat it!!! Merry Christmas everyone!!!
December 25th, 2008 at 7:50 amGood Morning to turkey Hill and Fans,
December 25th, 2008 at 7:50 amI just read my e-mail about the prize for this time. I could use that right now. I jsut brought some Turkey Hill ice cream. I have been buying 2 to 4 every other week since Thanksgiving. I have to buy more like 6 For this week. I am having family over. They love the Eggnog ice cream. I do too we put some butterscotch ice syrup over and and a little chocoalte syrup too. That set would come in handly now. But as I say to everyone. You can’t beat a very good ice cream and teas like turkey hills. They are one hug family and they do care about their family. Erine youare so right about the answered this time. When is turkey hill going to make some Gelato plain one. I love the Duetto, but I some time like to just have one like your Lemon or Berry. I wish I can just eat the lemon only. I like the lemon after a heavy meal. Lemon is so good and light for the soul. It is not heavy like ice cream. Can you come up with with side of Duetto.(one side is Lemon and other side is vanilla or lemon ice cream) Not like you have it now. Turkey Hill yu are Number One in my Family. happy Hoilday to all. Please be safe this hoilday.
Merry Christmas everyone -out here on Long Island you can get authentic gelato-very rich and yummy
December 25th, 2008 at 7:11 amForget the kids, I will have fun palying with the set! LOL
December 25th, 2008 at 6:43 amOur trips are in the USA only and our ice cream is always Turkey Hill. Stay with the BEST !
December 25th, 2008 at 6:19 amI am going to go have a bowl of Turkey Hill right now to celebrate the holidays and it is so good. Season’s greetings to all, I love the prize too!
December 25th, 2008 at 4:46 amwe went to italy for the 1st time this past march, landing in rome. 1st thing we did was find a gelato stand in the airport on our way to our connecting flight to palermo. eating gelato in italy was one of the reasons to go to italy. 2 weeks ago we discovered a gelato store in moorestown, nj. we’ll be back!
December 25th, 2008 at 2:58 amThank you for blogging and offering the prize! I would LOVE that prize! Not sure who I would give that gift to, my only son’s 10-years-old and I don’t think he’d appreciate it like I want the child I’d give it to to appreciate it? I do have a next door neighbor named, “Kyle,” though that would prolly like that! I would love to win that gift for Kyle! The Bible says that you should love your neighbors as yourself, and I certainly do love my Kyle, he is really somethin’ else!
Well..
One of the things in that gift set that caught my eye was the magnetic like ice cream scooper. I think my mamma always had one of them in our house when I was a child. However, although I may have had one in my past when I moved out on my own, I KNOW I haven’t had one of them on hand for many, many years now. Well, I could have really used one tonight! I bought my son some Vanilla Turkey Hill ice cream, big container, and then Hershey’s Hot Fudge topping and also Caramel Topping from the Turkey Hill Minit Market on Hershey Ave., in Lancaster.
Well, I told him I had purchased that for him tonight and I tempted him with it, and he wanted some then!
However, it was so difficult for me to spoon the ice cream into the bowl, the ice cream was so hard frozen, I was using a kitchen spoon and could only manage to get a little bit of ice cream basically into the bowl, I even bent the spoon somewhat? So, I definitely one of those adult kind of ice cream scoopers…maybe you can sell them in your store? You could sell 2 kinds of them, just like selling the ice cream sundae glasses, one very reasonably priced one, and the other, a highly expensive one. After I had blogged to you the other day about my wanted to buy new sundae glasses, I googled sundae glasses online and I was SHOCKED at what I found, I found like $100 priced sundae glasses and even more expensive, wait, I’ll try to show the link I had seen!
Here it is!
http://www.instawares.com/ice-cream-sundae-glasses.6598.4.7608.0.0.8.htm
Maybe instead of selling so much ice cream in your store, you could just provide us with good links! Ha ha!
I just saw the small $1.71 sundae glasses for sale at that site too, just caught my eye, I’ll definitely have to get those too.
Well, I have SO much to tell you’s!
Thank you for sending me those coupons in the snail mail, I got them yesterday, I think, and they brought me great JOY! Especially seeing the envelope, all cardboard and stuff, no cheap paper envelopes for Turkey Hill! Only the BEST they can find will do! Hee hee. I’m so GLAD I’m a decendent prolly of the Frey’s of Lancaster who started Turkey Hill, even if I’m not a “direct” decendent or whatever, my mamma was still a FREY, spelled F-R-E-Y!
Ha ha! I’m so proud now! Just found that info out the other day when I came to your site.
OH! I am just having a BLAST at your sister company Turkey Hill Minit Market on Hershey Avenue in Lancaster City. I go there all the time, everyday, a lot of times through the day, I even want to go there now! Though I’m getting sleepy, so, I’ll prolly go to bed, wanna get bacon there though so that I can make it for hubby for breakfast tomorrow morning?
OH! I just have SO much to tell “you’s”! I used my first Turkey Hill coupon that I had received today. I think I got 35 cents off a smaller Turkey Hill iced tea, I usually always bought the big ones, but there’s no room in my fridge right now, and besides I know now that I’ll never “run out” of Turkey Hill iced tea when I want it, because I can just run around the corner from my housey to get some mo! Even if it’s at 3 a.m. in the mornin’ I’m not scared!
Isaiah 41:10
‘Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’
I hope I can encourage others to get crazy for Jesus and party with the HILL at the same time! I’m spreading the word about TurkeyHill.com, especially at the Turkey Hill convenience store on Hershey Ave. in Lancaster, have so much more I wanna tell you…thank you for the coupons, I never woulda realized though how very valuable they are before, like with the $1.00 off any Turkey Hill product, I can now ALWAYS buy Turkey Hill butter, not think it’s too “expensive,” and need to use inexpensive margerine or whatever? I’m going to write you guys another letter again in the future, and hope I get some more coupons! They told me that they were gonna send me coupons because of my letter, and they DID! Pronto too!
And the money off the iced teas, I will use them all up! And the Ice Cream! I will definitely ALWAYS have Turkey Hill ice cream in my fridge, especially VANILLA, so I can make my sonny bwoy, or anybody else who comes to my housey Sundaes!
Oh, I am having so much fun! God bless Turkey Hill! Eternally!
Write more soon,
Carolina, from Lancasta, Pennsylvaia, AMERICA BABEEEEEEE!!! XXX 000 America SURELY IS the BEST Country in all the earth, no need to be ashamed of that fact? XXX OOO

December 24th, 2008 at 10:30 pmI haven’t tried the Duetto but plan to very soon. Thanks for the coupons.
December 24th, 2008 at 9:51 pmMy kids are asking for their own entry as they love Turkey Hill and love the prize.

December 24th, 2008 at 9:49 pmI’ve not yet tried Duetto, but after reading the other comments, I definitly will. Would also love to win this toy for my children.
December 24th, 2008 at 8:21 pmI haven’t tried any of the Duetto’s yet….guess I better get with the program ! When my egg nog is gone, I will.
December 24th, 2008 at 8:08 pmYes, the children in our daycare would love playing with the Deluxe Ice Cream Parlor set. Oh, and I have tried Duetto and I do like it.
December 24th, 2008 at 7:01 pmthe duetto is a excellent ice cream
December 24th, 2008 at 6:31 pmI also love the mango Duetto. I wish there was a chocolate chip flavor.
December 24th, 2008 at 5:55 pmI was in Italy for 3 days in 1967 when I was in the Army. Can’t remember if I had any gelato or not—must be getting old—but I do love my ice cream
December 24th, 2008 at 5:05 pmWow, this prize is adorable. I will try and share with the kids, but it looks like too much fun not to let us adults have a chance too.
December 24th, 2008 at 4:59 pmDuetto is really good…I like the mango one. I’d like to try raspberry but I haven’t seen it anywhere yet.
December 24th, 2008 at 4:55 pmEvery time I visit this blog I get hungry! LOL!
December 24th, 2008 at 4:43 pmi love duetto!! mango is my favorite!!!
December 24th, 2008 at 4:21 pmThe new duetto is going on my shopping list. I haven’t seen it yet in our area but it does sound good.
December 24th, 2008 at 4:13 pmI just love the root beer Duetto when i can get it Please don,t discontinue making ii
December 24th, 2008 at 2:34 pmI always preferred regular ice cream over gelato.
December 24th, 2008 at 2:17 pmOh we love Gelato – and can not wait to indulge in the Duetto. My husbands family is from Italy. There is a restaurant in our area that has Gelato on it’s dessert menu – we get it everytime we go there. Which unfortunately isn’t that often, so having the Duetto as a unique option is going to be fantastic.
December 24th, 2008 at 1:35 pmWhere I live isn’t really known for a lot of gelato places, so I will gladly settle for Duetto. My mother would like the local Turkey Hill retailer to start carrying the Raspberry Duetto.
December 24th, 2008 at 1:32 pma wonderful kit for any chridren to enjoy ice cream
December 24th, 2008 at 12:58 pmI’ve never been to Italy and I’ve never tasted gelato so I guess I’ll go buy Duetto!
