Did you know that Turkey Hill produces 36 million gallons of ice cream each year? To help put 36 million gallons of ice cream into perspective, consider these facts:
• That’s over 1 BILLION servings of ice cream (1,152,000,000 to be exact). That’s almost four servings for every man, woman and child in America!
• 36 million gallons is enough ice cream to fill over 54 Olympic-sized swimming pools (they’re pretty big), or 12,100 backyard swimming pools like the one pictured on the right.
• If one person were to eat one container of ice cream per day, it would take them 263,000 years to finish 36 million gallons!
• If you were to stack the 96 million containers of Turkey Hill ice cream that make up those 36,000,000 gallons on top of each other, it would stretch 6,060 miles high, or enough to reach outer space and back over 48 times.
• Those same 96 million containers of Turkey Hill ice cream line-up end-to-end would stretch 10,606 miles. That’s enough to reach from Lancaster, Pennsylvania to Los Angeles four-and-a-half times.
The point is, that’s a lot of ice cream, but as long as there are people out there who love it, we’ll continue to make it!

Four servings per person—oops—I was over first week of January
good point thomas!
remember the definition of a serving size: 4 oz or 1/2 cup. i bet lots of us eat (much) more than that at a time! a ’serving’ means that a pint container, for example, serves 4. who can eat just 4 oz at a time?
so if a person actually eats twice that amt at a time, a cup (8 oz), that’s 2 servings in a pint, 4 servings in a qt, 6 servings in the new 1.5 qt size TH box. if 2 people per house dig into that box, that box probably survives just 3-5 days max in a fridge at home. for the TH fans on this blog that means a likely 2 boxes (6 servings/person) per week. waaay over 4 servings per year!
here’s some more arithmetic:
1,152,000,000 4 oz servings should probably be 576,000,000 8 oz servings
divided by 52 weeks in a year =
11,076,923 servings/wk
divided by 6 servings/wk/person =
1,846,153.8* loyal TH fans in your northeast US territory. with about 75 of us on this blog somewhat regularly.
* which is the same as 96,000,000 containers divided by 52 weeks, the number of containers made/wk. divided by 5 working days/wk = 369,230 containers per day from your one factory in lancaster county. that’s a lotta cows!
TH: i was wondering. of those 96 million boxes, are any sold under another (private label) name besides TH, such as under the Kroger name?
I was food shopping yesterday and saw peanut brittle as a flavor! I never saw this flavor before, although was disappointed they only had it in the sugar free kind.
I’m sure our family even our dog eats more than our share.
Wow, that’s a lot of ice cream! Thanks for sharing, I am going to go enjoy a big bowl of Turkey Hill right now. Yum!
oh, floating on a raft, with turkey hill ice cream in each hand, on a warm summer day, is a nice thought, considering it’s 16 degrees outside right now.
I know that I have contributed more than my share when it comes to those numbers!
Oh, all this talk about ice cream and pools and summer (minus 1 last night! I am going to run a hot bubble bath tonight and get my 4 servings and relax in the tub! It is the next best for us in the NW who won’t see “pool weather” for some time!
Good Morning to all of Turkey Hill fans and Family, That was some good information. Well, I am goign to keep eating Turket Hill Ice cream so that the count will be even more next time.Everyone Have a good today.
Well I know for a fact my brother and myself are way over the amount stated. I buy 3-4 containers of Turkey Hill a week, since my brother asks for ice cream 2-3 times a day. At 82 and disabled I give it to him, ice cream is his enjoyment. Oh my dog loves Turkey Hill. Don’t forget to include animals that love Turkey Hill in your estimates.LOL. Linda
What does that say about us Americans? That we know good ice cream when we eat it–keep on making that fabulous stuff!
No matter what the servings, my family enjoys Turkey Hill Ice Cream every night for a treat. The kids know 8:00 is snack time!!!!!!
Just purchased two more boxes of Turkey Hill. My husband likes the lowfat “Vanilla Bean.”
I am so glad that I can do my part to keep the numbers up! Let’s all try to raise the bar so that Turkey Hill will have to make more this year and set a new record!
My hubby was happy to reads Barry’s blog since it save him the time to calculate it. He also was going to use the 8 ounces since he remembers as a kid when the Good Humor man came it was rare for someone to buy the 4 ounce cup unless it was for someone under 5 years. He alway got the large 8 ounce one. A lot of people are missing out on the TH since we have TH about 5 days a week at 8 ounces which for the 2 of us is 20 servings or a 1000 for the year. I guess that most of us bloggers also polish off about 500 serving a year so we are hogging over 100 people’s worth of the TH
boy does some one have time on there hands to calulate this ice cream number; I just enjoy eating the ice cream , have fun with the numbers
Amazing math! We are contributing big time to amount consumed!
Thanks for all the statistics, back to the ice cream, it is the best i ever experienced in all my travels.
36 million gallons!!! Is that an average per year or just this past year? How do you know when to increase the volume? Despite the economy I will bet Turkey Hill ice cream is not declining in sales. We know a good deal when we see it.
Wow…gives new meaning to everybody in the pool, huh?! I say you could never have too much Turket Hill ice cream!!!
Yes, please keep making it! I promise to keep eating it!
Thank you for the statistics…how fascinating to hear about all the scenarios of where the ice cream would go. Keep making it…delicious flavors of Turkey Hill ice cream never get old.
Thats alot of icecream eating. Does that include my 1/2 pint that I eat every other night?
With the peanut butter scare going on now, will you not be putting any into your ice creams?
Give each of us a spoon and turn us loose. LOL
Wow! 36,000,000 gal frm one company! What was the TOTAL gallons of ice cream produced in both the US and the World???
That number must be stagaring!!!
Oh boy, would love to just see a pool filled with all that ice cream .ENJOY ENJOY!!!!!!YUM YUM.You’d have to say to someone “Pinch me ,see if I’m dreaming”
i have a spoon and am willing to volunteer as our new prsident is calling us all to do! HA HA
sounds good
Keep making the ice cream we love the it!
Enough of the statistics, just keep making it as I know I am one of the biggest eaters of TH ice cream. Saw your red and white duetto cow at Country Store in Mt. Joy this week. Looks as good as the ice cream tastes.
36 million gallons. My mind is a vast compendium of useless information.
Forget the math. You make as much as you can and I’ll eat as much as I can. The american way.
Yes,I am probably over the ‘average’ amount too. Morning, noon, or night – there isn’t a time of day I can’t eat ice cream.
Dot
I showed this article to my son, he is 20. He would love to be in a pool full of ice cream. He has to eat it every day. A day is not a day without ice cream!! That his motto!!
I agree with Bert…just keep it coming!!
I know that at our house ice cream never goes to waste–so just keep it coming and we’ll try to get rid of it for you!
Those same 96 million containers of Turkey Hill ice cream line-up end-to-end would stretch 10,606 miles. I am ready to help them line up from Lancaster, Pennsylvania to Los Angeles but I only need to go there one time and back. someone else will have to do the other 3 1/2 times.
Joyce,
