VOLUNTARY RECALL: DYNAMIC DUOS MOVIE NIGHT

Friday, February 27th, 2009

Due to the expanding FDA investigation into the PCA peanut situation, Turkey Hill has decided to add one flavor to our previously voluntarily recalled Turkey Hill Ice Cream flavors. Based on some new investigations of the Peanut Corporation of America’s Texas processing plant, we’ve also decided to recall our 1.5 quart Dynamic Duos Movie Night flavor.

Although tests have indicated that this flavor (and the others) are safe, we’re enacting this recall as a safety precaution. If you have Movie Night, please dispose of it immediately or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Movie Night is a new product and we have made very little of it.  Much of it never left our company’s freezers. But don’t worry if you didn’t get to try it. We’ll be making some more as soon as we get new ingredients with peanuts from another company.

Stay tuned to the recall page of TurkeyHill.com for updates on this matter. Until then, if you have concerns or questions about this voluntary recall, please contact Turkey Hill at 1-800-MY-DAIRY (1-800-693-2479) or e-mail our Customer Relations Department via the “Contact Us” section of our website.

SECOND SCOOP: AHOY THERE!

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

This was originally posted on the Ice Cream Journal back in September of last year, but we’re so amazed by this creation that we had to post it again. It also got us thinking about all sorts of things one could build out of empty Turkey Hill ice cream containers!

Remember when you were in the first grade and you made really neat things out of popsicle and ice cream sticks? Of course you do. There was the popsicle stick box. The popsicle stick house. And, of course, the popsicle stick picture frame. We’re sure mom still has that thing laying around somewhere.

An Ice Cream Journal reader forwarded us this story about a guy who took that art to whole new level by building a fully-operational replica of a Viking ship out of ice cream sticks…15 MILLION ice cream sticks to be exact. That’s a picture of his amazing creation on the right. Something tells us it’s not held together with Elmer’s glue and paste.

The builder, Robert McDonald, was helped by his own son and 5,000 other kids. Said McDonald, “If you can dream it, you can do it. I want to teach children that anything is possible.” Hard to argue with that!

The Heladeria Coromodo ice cream shop in Merida, Venezuela holds the world record for the most varieties of ice cream (over 800 and counting). Not all flavors are available every day, but highlights include “smoked trout-flavored ice cream and tuna ice cream, along with shrimp, squid, ham and cheese, meat, whiskey, beer, champagne, wine, crab, rice, pumpkin, roses, black beans, ginger, asparagus, chili, spaghetti and cheese, garlic and corn.”

A VISIT FROM THE PHILLIES WORLD SERIES TROPHY

Monday, February 16th, 2009

Many of you probably already know that the Philadelphia Phillies won the World Series last October. You may also know that Turkey Hill has a long-standing relationship with the Fightin’ Phils as the makers of the team’s official ice cream flavor, Phillies Graham Slam.

As a member of the “team,” Turkey Hill was overjoyed when the Phillies’ World Series trophy made a stop in Lancaster County to spend some time at the Dairy earlier this month. Below is a picture of the hardware along with a camera man from the local CBS news affiliate. A big thanks goes out to Jeff Hutchison at Hutch Graphics in Millersville, PA for capturing this photo.

Doesn’t it look all nice and shiny? We like to think we played at least a little bit of a role in helping the Phils take home the gold last year. After all, ice cream is the ultimate reward for victorious Little Leaguers, so why can’t it work for the pros?

A RECIPE FOR YOUR VALENTINE (OR YOURSELF!)

Friday, February 13th, 2009

We discovered these heart warming treats over on the All Things Ice Cream blog (and she found them on Pinch My Salt). They’re called “Naughty Ice Cream Sandwiches,” but we just call them delicious. They’re made with thinly cut chocolate brownies with layers of vanilla ice cream nestled in between. Check out the recipe at either of the links above and prepare to make one special Valentine very happy!

ASK ERNIE: IS IT OKAY TO EAT SNOW?

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

SUSAN ASKS: With all the chemicals in the air, is snow ice cream still safe to make? I made it as a girl, but that was so long ago.

Good question, Susan. I won’t repeat the age-old lesson about eating a certain colored snow, but I will say that most of us ate snow as children and we turned out okay!  So that means, eating snow is safe, right? Well, that depends who you ask.

But first, let’s consider how snow is made. It’s simple really. Snow is created when moisture in the air freezes around a dust particle. So at the very least, with each snowflake you ingest, you’re eating a tiny dust particle, which isn’t so bad when you consider that dust is everywhere around us and we eat it every day. (My apologies if anyone is eating as they read this.)

As for the risks of ingesting airborne chemicals and pollutants when you eat snow, that answer is a little trickier. That’s why we’re going to defer to the experts.

According to Helen Macintosh, an environmental professor at Harvard, as snow falls, it can attract toxins and these toxins are greater with snowfall in or near a city.

It’s not looking good for our plans to make snow cones, is it?

Here are a few other rules-of-thumb, which may or may not be backed up by a Harvard professor. Some say not to eat the first snowfall of the year, because that’s the one that collects all the bad stuff (after that, you can chow down, apparently). Others say that eating snow that falls on top of the Himalayas – or any other tall elevation – is okay because the air up there is cleaner. Good news for those living on Mount Everest.

For our bottom line answer, we’re going to defer to Dr. Lynnette Mazur, a professor of pediatrics at the University of Texas Medical School, who says, “Licking a little snow off a glove is probably OK. A meal of snow is not.”

The only question now is: How much exactly is a “meal of snow?”

Bon Appétit!

VIDEO: BACON AND EGG ICE CREAM

Monday, February 9th, 2009

If you’ve ever needed an excuse to eat ice cream for breakfast (and most of us don’t), you might want to check out this video which features the creation of bacon and egg ice cream. The narrator describes the ice cream as “a gastronomic double-take.” We’ll have to take his word for it.

AN INTERVIEW WITH DYNAMIC DUO #3: MOVIE NIGHT

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

Turkey Hill’s newest line of ice cream flavors, Dynamic Duos, features two different but complimentary ice cream flavors packed into the same container. To introduce you the Duos, we sat down for a series of unprecedented one-on-one interviews with each new addition. Our final interview took place late on a Friday with Movie Night, whose popcorn flavored half makes her arguably the most unusual of the Dynamic Duos flavors.

TURKEY HILL DAIRY: So, popcorn flavored ice cream. No one would have been able to predict that 10 years ago.

MN: Certainly not, but then again who could have predicted Sylvester Stallone would make another Rocky movie and another Rambo sequel?

THD: True. On one half you’re vanilla ice cream  with a creamy caramel swirl – a pretty normal sounding combination. But on the other half, you’re popcorn flavored ice cream packed with candy-coated popcorn pieces and praline peanuts. Caramel Cone Chaos said you were a little nervous about whether America is ready for a popcorn flavored ice cream.

MN: In the beginning I was nervous, but after talking to Party Cake and Phillies Graham Slam I felt more comfortable with my status as an unusual flavor. They’re both non-traditional flavors yet they’re extremely popular. That was really inspiring for me.

THD: Yeah, you’ve got nothing to worry about. The focus groups all loved you and in taste tests, you were voted “Most likely to be eaten in one night.” Sounds like you’ll be a hit at slumber parties.

MN (laughs): Well, that’s an honor! I just hope if they eat me in one night, they hurry out to buy more of me. I’m just as good the second or third time around as I am the first time. Sort of like watching your favorite movie…you appreciate it more each time.

THD: Speaking of films, we feel like we should ask you: What’s your favorite movie?

MN: Wow. I have to choose one? I really like family comedies and anything with animals in it. I’m a big fan of pretty much anything that comes out of the Disney Pixar studios. Toy Story, Finding Nemo, Cars. They’re all great. Of course, a scary movie is good now and then. But not too late at night, or else I can’t sleep.

THD: On the subject of toppings, what do you put on popcorn ice cream? Would chocolate fudge or sprinkles be good on you?

MN: We actually talked about that in the focus groups. Some people thought chocolate and popcorn wouldn’t mix, but a lot of people actually liked the combination. Truth is, I don’t really require a lot of extra toppings, but I guess if you were going to put something on me, you can take a cue from my more traditional half and try some caramel syrup.

THD: Sounds good to us! Well, it’s getting late, we should probably let you go. You got anything else planned tonight?

MN: Of course. I’m getting together with Butter Pecan and Rainbow Sherbet to watch Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Ernie said it’ll give us a whole new appreciation for life here at the Dairy.

THD: So who at Turkey Hill would be Willy Wonka?

MN: Ernie, of course. But don’t tell him I said that. I’m not sure if that’s a compliment.
