We had some fun tracking down weird ice cream-related news stories a few weeks ago for a post here on the Ice Cream Journal, so we thought we’d do again. Heck, we might even make a habit out of it! Here’s the latest in the world of ice cream:
APRIL 12, 2009 – FOLKS WAIT OVERNIGHT FOR ICE CREAM
According to the story, about a dozen people camped overnight outside an ice cream shop in Des Moines, Iowa in a tradition marking the opening of the shop for the season. Said the article, “if you’re first in line, the ice cream shop puts your picture on the wall and gives you free ice cream.”
That seems like pretty good incentive, but we have to wonder…if you get there the day before it opens and you’re not the first line, is there still a reason to wait?
APRIL 14, 2009 – WOMAN ATTACKS GAS STATION WITH ICE CREAM
When a Portsmouth, NH gas station clerk refused to sell beer to Jamie Cahill, the woman purchased a pint of ice cream instead. Not a bad idea, right? Well, instead of eating it, Cahill went outside and threw the pint through the gas station’s plate glass window. According to the story, police did not identify the flavor.
APRIL 16, 2009 – FOOD CHANNEL NAMES ICE CREAM THE TOP DESSERT OF 2009
Move over chocolate cake, there’s a new after-dinner treat in town. Actually, it’s not new, but ice cream was recently named in a Food Channel news release as the “new star of the dessert menu and (the) leading comfort food in the U.S. for 2009.” We can’t really argue with that!

If you’ve got a technical question about the ice cream making process or some other inquiry about the nuances of America’s favorite treat, chances are Ernie has the answer. He might not be able to answer all questions, but he’ll try his best and some may be featured on the Ice Cream Journal.
I Just Honestly Cannot Get Enough Out Of Turkey Hill Ice Cream!!! HONEST & FROM MY HEART!!! If It Didn’t Come With Such Great Healthy Ingredients, I Would Be Rolling Instead Of Walking Down A Street!!! lol….. THANKS TURKEY HILL FOR ALL YOU SATISFY MY TUMMY WITH!!!
MUCH SUPPORT & LOVE!!! Susan XOXO…<3
So this OT but I have to share. This week was Passover and my husband who lives on ice cream spent 8 days deprived. Thursday night, as soon as Passover was over, he drove to the store to pick up ice cream. Before he got home, i swear he had eaten half the carton.
I am not that crazy but I have to say some vanilla Turkey Hill with fruit, yummm!
Ice Cream mooooves me!!! Go TH!!
Everyone loves ice cream!!!
The waiting in line thing… I agree, what’s the point of being second? The crime is creative, albeit… illegal. The Food Channel rocks, and it’s about time ice cream got its due!
Interesting stories and I agree with what’s the point of being second in line?? The person who threw TH ice cream through the window must be crazy to waste it like that!!! Lastly, the Food Channel is absolutly right. I think ice cream is the best and most satisfying comfort food there is.
You guys need to think up some crazy stunt to tie into an introduction of a new flavor. Oh wait, you have the Duetto striped cow and that’s pretty cool. Unfortunately most people only get to see it in pictures on your website.
it is a sin to waste good ice cream by throwing it thru a window.
Turkey Hill is tops!
Turkey Hill fills any bill!
No surprise that ice cream is our favorite comfort food. Also, no surprise what lengths some people will go to for FREE ice cream and their picture on a wall. Jamie Cahill wasted a pint of ice cream for what? What a shame.
Keep Turkey Hill ice cream on hand for any situation, I say!!! It is my weapon of choice. Just give me a spoon and a container of Turkey Hill!!!
It is the #1 dessert in our house. We have a dish every night!
First I agree that ice cream is the most often dinner dessert (at least in our home). I won’t say the best since there are rare occasion desserts which could be better since they are rare occasions. Second I would not waste a pint of ice cream on a window of a store that would not sell me beer since I am not a beer drinker. If the beer was for hubby I would just walk out and never enter that store again. Third, I love ice cream but I would not wait overnite to be the first customer of the season or even for a year
Everyone loves ice cream especially Turkey Hill!
Hi Turkey Hill fans, I knew ice cream came in first-turkey Hill ice cream that is. Ice cream is so good you can get all kind of ice cream from turkey hill. I hope that you will soon carry blueberry ice cream soon. I love blueberry. In the mean time i will have to make my own blueberry ice cream with turkey hill vanill and you name it. blueberry.
MOOSE TRACKS DON’T EVEN MAKE THE BOWL. RIGHT OUT OF THE CARTON.TASTES GREATTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTAND CALLS FOR MOOOOOOORE.
I COULD EAT ICE CREAM EVERYDAY
It’s amazing that there are these stories about ice cream in the news. Once everyone sees the article about ice cream as the leading comfort food in the U.S. they will surely stock up on their favorite Turkey Hill flavor. As many of the other readers have already commented, they knew it already.
A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO, TURKEY HILL HAD WILD BLUEBERRY STREUSEL. SOME TIME AGO I ASKED ABOUT IT & NO RESPONSE & NOW
APRIL 18, BRENDA ASKED ABOUT BLUEBERRY.
ARE THERE ANY OTHER FANS OUT THERE? LET YOUR VOICES BE HEARD!!! TURKEY HILL–
“HEED YOUR DEVOUT CUSTOMERS”

The things people will do for (or with) ice cream—the stories made me laugh.
Wild Blueberry Struesel sounds good to me…How about it,TH?
Our favorite dessert is to make pizzelles and shape them into bowls and then put in a scoop of our favorite Turkey Hill Ice Cream. This is a favorite with friends and family alike.
Ice cream, especially Turkey Hill, always makes you feel better – no matter what it is you’re ailing from.
Some day I might be brave enough to explain how I happened to eat ice cream out of the sink. But not today. Maybe others have similar storied they would share?
My mother had a small sandwich shop and soda fountain. We made sundaes and bananasplits, etc. Well one day this guy comes in for a bananasplit, so I made it. I never give small dips, and that guy had a fit because I put to much ice cream in his. He kept on ranting about it that I got so upset that I grabbed the dish and put it in his face. Everyone in the shop couldn’t stop laughing. He didn’t get mad, thank God. Imagine anyone complaining about to much ice cream. Linda
