DID YOU KNOW: EARLY ICE CREAM PEDDLERS WEREN’T WELL RECEIVED

Friday, May 29th, 2009

In today’s society, the ice cream man is a welcome distraction on a hot summer day. But it wasn’t always that way. In the 1850s, when ice cream vendors began selling their treats in the streets, people complained of what they thought was unsanitary conditions and of the poor quality of the ice cream. The vendor’s outspoken sales pitches were also deemed a public nuisance.

During this period, ice cream also hit the streets in London, at a time when Londoners were still unfamiliar with the treat. Said one writer, “The consumers had to use their fingers instead of a spoon, and no few seemed puzzled how to eat their ice, and were grievously troubled by its getting among their teeth. I heard one drover mutter that he felt ‘as if it had snowed in his belly!’”

HERE’S TO AN EARLY SUMMER!

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

Looks delicious, doesn\'t it? In case you\'re wondering, it\'s Green Tea ice cream. Hopefully everyone had an enjoyable Memorial Day weekend. Back to work now, which, if you work in a place where you make ice cream, isn’t always a bad thing.

The best thing about Memorial Day, besides the day off and a chance to pay tribute to our nation’s armed forces, is that it  marks the unofficial start of the “summer season,” even though the official season doesn’t begin for another month.

The unofficial start of the summer season also means the unofficial start of ice cream eating season. Yeah, yeah, we’ve said it before on here, “Every season is ice cream eating season!” But the summer is the best time of all to indulge in a little extra ice cream here and there, isn’t it?

DID YOU KNOW: ICE CREAM FOR BREAKFAST?

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

In the 1930s, the Great Depression and the repeal of Prohibition made a serious dent in the sales of ice cream nationally. One insider was quoted, “The dime that went for soda now frequently goes for beer.”

Ice cream manufacturers tried all sorts of things to get people to buy ice cream again, including suggesting ice cream as a breakfast ingredient. One ad by the Hydrox Corporation exclaimed, “Ice Cream for Breakfast! Well, why not?” along with a suggestion for topping cereal with a scoop of your favorite ice cream flavor. Said the ad, “It is cream, you know.”

(P.S. – As many of you guessed, the answer to the question of which story was fake in our last post is #3. An eight-year ice cream headache is impossible, no matter how much ice cream you eat. And yes, the leaders of our government really do quarrel over issue like the “official state ice cream vendor.”)

ICE CREAM NEWS: WHICH ONE OF THESE STORIES IS FAKE?

Monday, May 18th, 2009

It’s that time again…time for some wild and wacky news about ice cream from around the world. Below are some of the more unusual stories we’ve managed to dig up, but there’s a twist. One of these stories is a fake, made up by the Turkey Hill staff. Try to guess which one by leaving a comment!

1. NO RESPECT FOR THE ICE CREAM MAN – An ice cream man in Suffolk, Virginia was dishing out some frosty treats when two men approached the window and placed an order. When the man turned around to get the goodies, the men brought out guns and demanded that he give them the truck. A short time later, while wandering the neighborhood, the ice cream man heard his truck’s music and found it abandoned. The shaken vendor reclaimed his vehicle and drove to the nearest police station to report the crime.

2. FOOD FIGHT! – A Rhode Island legislator’s attempt to name a local ice cream maker as the state’s official ice cream vendor melted faster than a freeze pop in August when the House couldn’t come to a consensus on the motion. Turns out, several other legislators preferred other ice creameries, and no one was willing to budge on their frosty allegiances. The legislator withdrew his resolution moments before the vote was to be conducted.

3. ANYONE HAVE AN ASPIRIN? – An Eagle Creek, Oregon man claims to have suffered from the world’s longest case of brain freeze after gobbling down a pint of Neapolitan ice cream nearly eight years ago. The man, who’s tried every conceivable remedy, can’t seem to shake the headache, but still enjoys his favorite frozen dessert “at least three times a week.” Doctors at Oregon University Medical Center have no explanation for the affliction.

4. NO RESPECT FOR THE ICE CREAM MAN (PART 2) – A turf war between two rival ice cream vans broke out in Camden, New Jersey last week. It started when one ice cream man encroached on the territory of another. The angered peddler shouted “You can’t stop here! This is my spot!” Soon after, the trespassing ice cream man was assaulted by two thugs and taken to the hospital where he was treated for cuts, bruises and a fractured rib.

Like we said, three of these stories are true and one is completely made up. Chime in with a comment if you think you know which of these tales is too tall to be true.

RECIPE: SAUTEED BANANA SPLIT

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

We didn’t think it was possible to improve on the banana split, but this recipe does just that. This is a simple twist on the tradition banana split that involves sautéing the bananas in butter for a few minutes before topping them with ice cream and other goodies. Judging by how good ice cream is on warm apple crisp, we think this one is a winner too.

A few of us here at the office are trying this one soon, but if anyone tries this, let us know now it turns out!

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 4 bananas, peeled and halved lengthwise
  • Ice cream (your choice)
  • Warm hot fudge sauce
  • Whipped cream
  • Other toppings as desired

DIRECTIONS

Melt butter in a large skillet over medium-low heat. Add bananas and sauté for 1 minute on each side, just until golden. Transfer bananas to 4 shallow dessert bowls and top with ice cream, warm hot fudge sauce, whipped cream and other toppings as desired.

By the way, just to remind everyone, our monthly prizes (this month’s is the waffle ice cream cone maker) is chosen from comments left throughout the entire month — not just on the prize entry – so feel free to chime in often.

ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL TURKEY HILL COUNTRY CLASSIC!

Monday, May 11th, 2009

As reported last week, we recently hosted our 10th Annual Turkey Hill Country Classic. It’s a basically a day of family fun here in Lancaster County. There was lots of ice cream, drinks, Hatfield hot dogs, Herr’s chips and, as always, lots of biking and running races.

After some early morning sprinkles, the weather cleared up and allowed us to get on with the festivities. All proceeds benefited the Lancaster Farmland Trust, which works hard to preserve farmland here in Lancaster County. More than 300 runners and 400 cyclists entered the sporting events (a nice shot of the action is below).

If you missed this year’s Classic, save the date for next year’s event, which will be held on May 1st. See you all in 358 days!

Special thanks to photographer Joe Hess for letting us use this great photo here. Feel free to check out more of Joe’s Country Classic photos here.

GOODWILL AND THE GIANT COW

Friday, May 8th, 2009

As many of you know, Turkey Hill’s Giant Cow really gets around. You see it at fairs, carnivals, store openings, sporting events and sometimes, if you’re lucky, cruising down the highway on its way to another appearance.

Today, our Giant Swirly Cow paid a visit to Goodwill’s award ceremony in Lancaster, bringing with her plenty of Turkey Hill ice cream. The party was purchased at a Lancaster Farmland Trust benefit auction and then donated to Goodwill. Goodwill provides job coaching and training to people with disabilities, and today they honored trainees and business partners for their achievements and commitment.

Some trainees were brought to tears over the excitement of receiving an award for the great work that they do. But once they shed the tears, they were dancing and waving around their favorite Turkey Hill ice cream cups. There were plenty of flavors to choose from. From Eagles Touchdown Sundae to Phillies Graham Slam to Party Cake. Many people couldn’t decide which one to pick, so they picked two flavors. Some chose three.

Of course, there was some friendly debate, too. Steelers fans shied away from the Eagles flavors (they don’t know what they’re missing), so they went with the Party Cake instead. Overall, more than 150 people were on hand and thrilled to enjoy Turkey Hill ice cream on this warm, May day.

MAY PRIZE: THE WAFFLE ICE CREAM CONE MAKER!

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

Sure, you could just buy ice cream cones from the grocery store (something we don’t do often enough), but you can also make ice cream cones at home! Because we all know, when it’s homemade, it just tastes better. Usually, at least.

Now you can make your own cones with the Chef’s Choice 838 Waffle Cone Express Ice Cream Cone Maker. It’s kind of like a waffle iron, except it can be used to make sugar cones “in about two minutes.” It even comes with a cone rolling form and recipes. As always, one lucky commenter will be chosen from all the comments entered on the Ice Cream Journal this month to receive this do-it-yourself gift. Good luck!

MAY POLL: DO YOU VISIT YOUR LOCAL ICE CREAM SHOP?

Monday, May 4th, 2009

It’s that time of year. The time when little ice cream shops welcome the (mostly) warm weather and open their doors for the season. We’ve said before and we’ll say it again: The only thing possibly better than a bowl of your favorite flavor at home is a double scoop at your local ice cream parlor.

Which leads us to our poll question for May: How often do you eat ice cream at an ice cream shop? Sounds simple enough! Now if you’ll excuse us, the ice cream freezer in the break room is calling our name.
