We didn’t think it was possible to improve on the banana split, but this recipe does just that. This is a simple twist on the tradition banana split that involves sautéing the bananas in butter for a few minutes before topping them with ice cream and other goodies. Judging by how good ice cream is on warm apple crisp, we think this one is a winner too.
A few of us here at the office are trying this one soon, but if anyone tries this, let us know now it turns out!
INGREDIENTS
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
- 4 bananas, peeled and halved lengthwise
- Ice cream (your choice)
- Warm hot fudge sauce
- Whipped cream
- Other toppings as desired
DIRECTIONS
Melt butter in a large skillet over medium-low heat. Add bananas and sauté for 1 minute on each side, just until golden. Transfer bananas to 4 shallow dessert bowls and top with ice cream, warm hot fudge sauce, whipped cream and other toppings as desired.
By the way, just to remind everyone, our monthly prizes (this month’s is the waffle ice cream cone maker) is chosen from comments left throughout the entire month — not just on the prize entry – so feel free to chime in often.

If you’ve got a technical question about the ice cream making process or some other inquiry about the nuances of America’s favorite treat, chances are Ernie has the answer. He might not be able to answer all questions, but he’ll try his best and some may be featured on the Ice Cream Journal.
Wow, I never knew there were actually directions and butter involved in the making of a banana split! sounds yummy!

I sautee banana slices in butter and brown sugar and add liquid coffee creamer. Think I’ll try this sometime.

We tried this last night (well, one of us did) and we’re happy to report that it’s delicious AND easy!
Delicious, the family sure enjoyed making this treat last night. Another winning recipe from Turkey Hill. !!!
That really sounds good, never thought to saute bananas. Thank you Turkey Hill for a wonderful recipe. Can’t wait to try this.
Well it really goes well with Turkey Hill Banana Split Ice Cream…
Well, as with most things, there’s always room for improvement and sauteeing the bananas first might just do it for a split. Of course, there’s no improving of TH (except to add new flavors)because it’s perfect.
I’m glad that you reported that this was easy to do. I would have been hesitant to try it if I didn’t have that comment!
May 16 is Armed Forces Day.When you se
wow! this looks YUMMY!
Oh… my…. GOODNESS! Such a simple little twist for an added dose of yummy! This is definitely something to add to a ‘cheat day’ menu in advance and look forward to! It will make me work harder during the week to earn it, for sure!!!
I have tried a similar version of this. While you sautee the bananas, sprinkle them with dark brown sugar. It makes a syrup/sauce which is yummy. Top the bananas with vanilla ice cream, then drizzle the syrup/sauce on top. Adults may like some dark rum added to the pan while the bananas are being sauteed. This is really good.
My husband loves banana splits so I am sure he will really enjoy this one!!!
Now your talking!!
i wish i had one now
Looks yummy!!!!!
I do not believe in adulterating my ice cream or my bananas!
looks yummy
WOW! Sounds great. Haven’t had a banana split in years. I like the idea of adding a tiny bit of rum. Can’t wait to try.
I went to college in Latrobe, PA. This is where they said the banana split was born. When I go back to college reunions they always offer banana splits as part of the schedule. This recipe adds another twist to the recipe that I normally follow. I’m always willing to try something new. Tonight it’s a sauteed banana split for dessert.
I love Banana Splits. Will try this. Thanks!!!
…And I just bought a whole bunch of bananas and T.H. ice cream…Yippie!
looks good. sounds good. i know it’ll taste good, especially if rum is added to the butter.
Banana Splits are my favorite way to eat ice cream. When are you going to open an ice cream shop like Brusters? Yours is better than theirs. You could make lots of money this way and people would love it.
