RECIPE: MINT LOVERS DREAM PIE

Friday, July 31st, 2009

First of all, we’d like to thank all of our new readers who stopped by the Ice Cream Journal during National Ice Cream Month (which ends this weekend, unfortunately). Our ice cream community grew a lot this month and we hope to see more of everyone in the future through your comments and input! And now, on with the recipe…

There were so many fantastic recipes submitted during last year’s holiday recipe contest that we just had to feature a few of them here on the Ice Cream Journal many months later. But instead of using Egg Nog or Peppermint Stick ice cream (as the holiday recipe contest rules dictated), we’re using different flavors in these reincarnations.

This one was sent to us by Naomi L. and was called “Mint Lovers Dream Pie” (with Peppermint Stick ice cream). We’re substituting Choco Mint Chip ice cream and calling it…(are you ready?)…”Mint Lovers Dream Pie.” It’s hard work being this creative.

By the way, the photo below is not a photo of the product of this recipe, but it’s close and it looks good, so we went with it anyhow. Enjoy!

MINT LOVERS DREAM PIE

INGREDIENTS

1 chocolate cookie ready made pie crust
1 tub Turkey Hill Choco Mint Chip ice cream
1 jar dark chocolate with mint ice cream topping (just chocolate topping will do too)
1 1/4 cups dark chocolate chips
1 8-ounce tub of whipped cream

DIRECTIONS

Soften ice cream so it will spread. Place half ice cream into pie crust. Stir 1 cup chocolate chips into other half of ice cream. Spread chocolate/mint syrup topping over ice cream and place in freezer until solid (30 minutes to 1 hour). Spread other half of ice cream/choco chip mixture into half filled crust. Spread whipped cream over that and sprinkle with 1/4 cup dark chocolate chips. Freeze pie for several hours until frozen solid. Enjoy!!

EXTRA! EXTRA! READ ALL ABOUT IT! RESEARCHERS FIND WAY TO TURN CLOUDS INTO ICE CREAM!

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

Whew! I ate more ice cream last night than I have in a long, long time (and I loved every bite). For those of you who missed it, last night was the first ever Turkey Hill Ice Cream Journal Ice Cream Social. Lots of people people gathered here on the blog at 8pm and sampled various ice creams together while chatting via comments. It was a great time. Thanks to everyone who showed up! We’ll definitely be having another ice cream party in the future.

And now on to the too-good-to-be-true subject of today’s blog entry. Two artists/researchers have theoretically discovered a way to make ice cream-flavored snow fall from the clouds. Sounds far fetched, doesn’t it? That’s because It is (for now… sorry), but in 10 or 20 years, it could make spending a day in the park a lot tastier!

The plan, called “The Cloud Project,” involves using sophisticated machinery (which still needs to be invented) to spray liquid nitrogen and ice cream-flavoring into the clouds, which causes the moisture in the clouds to condense, freeze and blanket the earth below in a yummy layer of ice cream snow. Making it work for real is still the biggest obstacle, but the artists have retrofitted an ice cream truck with an attachment which uses the same idea to spray out miniature ice cream snow storms. They also use the truck to distribute ice cream made with liquid nitrogen to curious bystanders.

Just think, one day the weather forecast could be cloudy with a chance of chocolate chip cookie dough. Shoveling the sidewalks just got a whole lot more fun!

THE JULY ICE CREAM PARTY IS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW ON THIS ENTRY!

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

NOTE: For this entry, if you’d like to, please put your hometown and state at the end of each comment to let people know where everyone at this party is from!

.

Let the party begin!

This Wednesday night, everyone is invited to visit the Ice Cream Journal with a Turkey Hill Limited Edition flavor and chat with the group via comment about what you liked (or didn’t like) about the flavor. You may even choose to sample multiple flavors…we know we will.

The Limited Edition flavors you may find in your store include Fried Ice Cream (April), Peanut Butter Brownie (May), Southern Lemon Pie (June) or, our newest Limited Edition flavor, Double Dunker. If you can’t find a Limited Edition flavor or prefer a Light Recipe flavor, just grab some of that and join us anyhow!

You can chat about anything you’d like, but here are a few questions to consider when commenting during our party:

1. Did the flavor taste the way you imagined it would?

2. Did you like it? If so, should we make it a permanent flavor in the Turkey Hill line-up?

3. What’s your favorite part of the flavor?

4. What would you change (if anything) about the flavor?

5. What sort of toppings would go well with the flavor?

6. If you could change the name of the flavor, what would you call it?

7. Is there anything in the world better than an ice cream party?

The Turkey Hill Team will be here too, chatting right along with you and answering any questions you may have. See you Wednesday night… and like we said in the subject line, feel free to invite a friend either by forwarding this blog entry to them or inviting them over to your house to join in the fun. The more, the merrier!

TRIVIA MONDAY AND THE GOURMET ICE CREAM SAUCES

Monday, July 27th, 2009

In this new Ice Cream Journal feature, we’ll ask five ice cream-related trivia questions. You can use the internet to find the answers, but not all of these questions will be easy! Once you’ve got the answers (or think you do), email your answers via the Ask Ernie link in the right hand sidebar or send them to icecreamjournal@gmail.com. We’ll choose one person with the correct answers at random to receive this week’s tasty trivia prize. Good luck!

1. In our Family Scrapbook on the Turkey Hill website, which flavor of Turkey Hill ice cream is 6-month-old Jeremy reaching for?

2. Which ice cream shop would you be at if you ordered “Cackalacky Ice Cream?”

3. How many stores within 30 miles of Newport, Pennsylvania carry Turkey Hill ice cream cakes?

4. What is dutching?

5. Which two countries produce 90 percent of the world’s vanilla beans?

TODAY’S PRIZE: Speaking of vanilla, if you’re looking to give your ice cream a little gourmet taste, then this week’s prize is for you. We’ve purchased three of the most delicious and gourmet-sounding sauces on the Internet: Raspberry Pinot Noir Chocolate Sauce, Coffee Merlot Chocolate Sauce and Pear Walnut Finishing Sauce.

ERNIE ON THE RADIO

Sunday, July 26th, 2009

Not long ago, Turkey Hill’s “Einstein of Ice Cream,” Ernie Pinckney, was a guest on the Saucy Sisters radio show. The Saucy Sisters – Barbara and Beverly – mainly focus on wine topics, but stray a bit sometimes to include topics like ice cream. Below is a transcript of their conversation with Ernie. Enjoy!

BEVERLY: Many of you have written to ask us, “How in the world did you get so lucky to be a Saucy Sister?” Well, you drink all day and you taste foods from around the world. We  think we’re pretty luck girls. But there’s someone else who has the edge on the “Best Job in the World.” He’s Ernie Pinckney, and he’s the official ice cream taster for Turkey Hill ice cream.

Ernie grew up on a dairy farm and he’s been tasting ice cream, well, for a lot of years. And he’s joining us today from Turkey Hill’s headquarters in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Hello Ernie!

ERNIE: Hello! How are you?

BEVERLY: We’re just doing great! How are things up there in that beautiful part of Pennsylvania?

ERNIE: It’s actually beautiful today. The sun is shining, the rain has stopped and we’re waiting to get outdoors.

BEVERLY: Well, we won’t hold you up. Earlier in our program, Barbara was talking about tasting ice cream. And she can’t just take a spoonful, she has to eat a whole half gallon.

BARBARA: And there’s something wrong with that?

ERNIE: Sounds good to me!

BEVERLY: How in the world do you taste all that ice cream?

ERNIE: Well, we do very small amounts at a time, using a very small spoon, and we place it on our tongue and swirl it around in our mouth and get that official taste from it.

BARBARA: You know, that sounds very much like wine tasting. Beverly and I conduct wine classes and we have people in our class swirling (the wine) around in their mouths as well. Is it the same kind of thing?

DID YOU KNOW: THE HISTORY OF THE “I SCREAM, YOU SCREAM” SONG

Saturday, July 25th, 2009

We all know the words. “I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!” Well, we know that much, at least. The song was actually recorded in 1929 by a group called “Waring’s Pennsylvanians.” As the name implies, the band was from Pennsylvania (the founder and leader attended Penn State) and included as many as 12 members.

In the video below (this is a real treat for ice cream fans), you can hear the ode to ice cream in its entirety. The “frog-voiced drummer,” so called in this article on the band, became popular after this song was released and was known to play melodies on his teeth!

For those who want to sing along, the complete lyrics can be found here.

POP QUIZ!

Friday, July 24th, 2009

No, this isn’t a warm up for Monday’s trivia entry, but it is a fun quiz about ice cream. We found this 10 question quiz online and passed it around the office. Scores ranged from four correct out of 10 to nine out of 10. Nobody aced it, but maybe you can! Click here to test your ice cream knowledge. Good luck, and let us know with a comment what your score was!

As for the answers to this past Monday’s trivia questions, they’re included below. Good job to everyone who answered them all correctly!

1. Our All Natural Recipe Chocolate ice cream has 4 percent iron. We also overlooked that our Stuff’d Nutty Chocolate Moose Tracks tops them all with 6 percent iron, so we accepted that answer as well.

2. The Golden Opulence Sundae at Serendipity 3 costs $1,000! More about the world’s most expensive sundae can be read here (that it on the right).

3. The peak months for ice cream consumption are July and August. One trivia test online claimed June and July were the correct answers, so we gave credit those who used that survey as their source.

4. Approximately 50 percent of all ice cream novelties are consumed by adults.

5. Finally, Ernie got his “big break” in the dairy business at the tender age of about 18 months (per this blog entry). Some of you did the math and figured out when he started here at Turkey Hill Dairy, which we also accepted as his “big break.”

Again, good job to all who aced the test. We’ll announce our trivia winner soon!

ASK ERNIE: MY WIFE CRAVES ICE CREAM MORNING, NOON AND NIGHT!

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

The following question was sent to us via the “Ask Ernie” link on the right. Below is the original question, followed by Ernie’s answer, and a follow-up email. This exchange was a big hit with everyone here at the Dairy, and many of the husbands and wives here can relate to our reader’s dilemma. Enjoy!

CHARLIE F. FROM WINSLOW, NJ WRITES: Ernie, My wife is currently pregnant with our first child, a boy, and everything is going great. Except, she craves ice cream morning, noon and night! The only things she’ll eat are Graham Slam, Chocolate Marshmallow, and Strawberries & Cream. I must buy at least a gallon of each a day, and sometimes I’m running to the grocery store at 11:00 at night to buy more – and there’s never any left for me! My wallet is running on empty and she refuses to eat anything else. What can I do to curb her sweet tooth? Is Turkey Hill hiring so I can afford to keep up with her habit? Is my son going to be born part ice cream? Help!

ERNIE WRITES:

That’s quite a dilemma you’ve got there, Charlie!

Food cravings during pregnancy are mysterious things. Several studies have been unable to explain exactly why women crave certain foods when they’re pregnant, though some suggest that women crave foods that help compensate for certain vitamins and nutrients their bodies are lacking. In this case, your wife might be yearning for calcium (and for you to prove your devotion to her by making late night ice cream runs).

As for curbing her sweet tooth, having been in this situation myself, I’d advise you not to try to intervene too much. An expectant mother who’s unable to satisfy her cravings can create all sorts of other problems and I won’t be able to help you with those.

To eliminate the late night ice cream trips, you might consider keeping a few “emergency” pints of Turkey Hill ice cream in the back of the freezer, just in case you run out halfway through the nightly news and you’re already in your pajamas. You may choose to hide or disguise the pints to preserve their “emergencies only” status, but if she finds out you’re hiding ice cream from her, I can’t be held responsible for the results.

To answer your question about potentially working at Turkey Hill, you’re in luck, because we are hiring at the moment. We’re looking for a 2nd Shift Freezer Team Leader and a 2nd Shift Lift Operator. If you’re interested, feel free to email your resume to careers@turkeyhill.com, though I suspect the commute to Lancaster County from Winslow, NJ might be troublesome for you.

In the meantime, I’ll send you some coupons for some free ice cream to help ease the financial burden until your son arrives. (What’s your address?) I only ask that you consider — just consider — naming him Ernie. It’s a good name if you give it a chance.

Finally, I can assure you, although I’m not a doctor, that your son will not be born part ice cream. However, he might be born with his mother’s intense craving for ice cream. This craving could follow him for the rest of his life, but I suppose there are worse things to be addicted to. Actually, I’m beginning to wonder how much ice cream my own mother ate when she was pregnant with me. That would explain a lot.

Hope this helps. Keep me posted and let me know how things turn out!

Best,
Ernie

CHARLIE’S RESPONSE: My wife found your e-mail first, because we share an account – but luckily she thought it was funny!

Actually, your theory that she’s craving calcium makes a lot of sense. She’s always been on the petite side, never drinks milk, and when we first found out she was pregnant, the doctor also noted she had a calcium deficiency problem. So I guess all of that ice cream is doing her and my son some good, eh? I’ll definitely take your advice to store some extra ice cream in the freezer; I have a freezer in the basement where I store our wholesale purchases, so I can easily hide it in there and bring it out when needed – and maybe keep some to myself as well. Perhaps I should start an ice cream reserve, if her ice cream habit is going to cause her sweet tooth to be passed to our child..

Thank you for answering my question with so much information, it’s greatly appreciated. And I would love to take you up on your offer for some coupons, I really appreciate it. I can use any break I get financially, especially since the majority of my income is going either to baby gear or ice cream at this point!

And I’ve added Ernie to our list of potential baby names – I’m not sure how receptive my wife will be, but if she hears you’re sending over some coupons for ice cream, we may have a little Ernie Jr. running around our home in three months. Thank you again, your generosity is just another reason why I don’t really mind spending so much money with Turkey Hill – you don’t find many companies with an ethic like Turkey Hill around anymore, that’s for sure!

WE’RE THROWING AN ICE CREAM PARTY AND YOU’RE INVITED!

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

Who doesn’t love an ice cream party? They were awesome when you were eight and they’re awesome when you’re 48. That’s why we’re trying something new, starting now.

Next week Wednesday night, beginning at 8 pm EST, we’re going to host a live ice cream tasting party right here on the Ice Cream Journal. The flavors will be any of our current Limited Edition flavors you might be able to find in your store (many are still available). That includes Fried Ice Cream (April), Peanut Butter Brownie (May), Southern Lemon Pie (June) or, our newest Limited Edition flavor, Double Dunker (mocha ice cream swirled with chewy cookie dough and crunchy chocolate cookie swirl). If you can’t find any of the Limited Edition flavors, just grab whatever flavor you like!

At that time, we invite everyone to stop by the Ice Cream Journal with your fresh bowl of ice cream (or ice creams) and share your opinion of the flavor and chat with the rest of the party guests with a comment on that day’s ice cream party blog post. The party will last for about half an hour, or as long as you want to hang around.

As far as we know, it’ll be the first ever live ice cream party in the history of the Internet so, in addition to tasting some new ice cream and chatting with fellow ice cream lovers, you’ll also be a part of ice cream history. Again, that’s next Wednesday night (July 29) at 8 pm EST. Who’s ready to party?

FEATURED PHOTO: DECISIONS, DECISIONS

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

We’ve all been there. Standing in the ice cream shop with way too many choices in front of you and only a few minutes to make up your mind. You always think you’ll be able to choose the flavor you want before the attendant finishes helping the person in front you, but, inevitably, you’re sometimes caught off guard when it’s your turn. It happens to me all the time.

Maybe you made up your mind or maybe you’ve got a favorite flavor that you always opt for, but more often than not, your three minutes to decide turns into three seconds when, with scooper in hand, the server asks, “May I help you?”

So you choose one of the eight flavors you were debating, and hope you’ll like it. Of course, it’s silly to hope that you’ll like it, because you always do.
