On this day in 1776, our nation declared its independence and was officially born. That’s also the year the nation’s first ice cream parlor opened. Coincidence? I don’t think so. After all, what better way to celebrate the birth of a new nation than with a double scoop of Vanilla Bean on a hot July day?
I hope everyone finds an appropriate way to celebrate this joyous occasion, either with a barbeque at a friend’s house, a fireworks display in the local park or simply with a bowl of your favorite ice cream flavor. Heck, why not have all three?!
By the way, we’re closing in on 3,000 subscribers to the Ice Cream Journal. If you’ve got a technical question about the ice cream making process or some other inquiry about the nuances of America’s favorite treat, chances are Ernie has the answer. He might not be able to answer all questions, but he’ll try his best and some may be featured on the Ice Cream Journal.
OK, so we decided to share our Turkey Hill yesterday in honor of Independence Day. Our Graham Slam is gone and we are down to the end of our Rocky Road. Looks like we need to get to the store….again.

HERES SOME MORE ICE CREAM HISTORY: THE FIRST ICE CREAM CONES (EDIBLE WAFFLE CUPS) WERE PATENTED IN 1903. OTHERS SAY THEY WERE INVENTED IN 1904 AT THE WORLDS FAIR IN ST LOUIS.

Happy Birthday USA… what better way than to celebrate with some good old fashioned TH ice cream and watching fireworks right in your own back yard. Also, thank you to all the service men and women who are continually protecting so that we may continue to enjoy the freedoms our fore fathers offered to us! You are appreciated and not forgotten!
We are free to celebrate our heritage due to the sacrifices of many American Women and Men. Let us always be mindful of this as we Enjoy our lives especially the Red, White, and Blue Ice Cream.
The happiest time of the year…
What a great photo! It makes one hungry for that cone and remembers our nation’s great creativity.
We were out of town but really liked the red/white/blue ice cream cone. It looks great. Hope everyone had a safe and happy 4th of July.
when i saw that photo the first thing that came to mind was, “ooh that look’s good!”
God Bless the USA and Turkey Hill for being so generous!
Made me proud to get to see that lovely cone
Love that ice cream cone.
One of the best flavors that Turkey Hill produced was the cocoanut flavor without the “pie” combination. I have not seen it in a long time and wish it would be available once again.
hope everyone had a great holiday weekend.
Now back too work.
So since it was a national holiday, my parents always reserve the day entirely and strictly for “family.” We are instructed to turn off our cell-phones, unplug our computer and remain “gadget-free” for the entire holiday. That way we are able to appreciate the reason for the holiday, celebrate our nation’s historical figures that made the day possible, and give thanks with our family. That is all well and good, but the embargo on internet lasted 2 days and I missed reading this blog
that was truely tragic and I was so tempted to sneak on and see what the topic of discussion was, read some funny posts, and see if there were any additional prizes. But I kept my promise and suffered through with no turkey hill blog…but im back!
Ice cream,–especially this one so patriotic!!–picnics, parades, family, flags and fun makeup the 4th of July plus a good dose of fireworks make us stop and think how blessed we are to live in the USA.
Immediately after the National Monument fireworks, we made a beeline to our favorite Gifford’s!
