SECOND SCOOP: THE MYSTERIOUS SMILEY FACE ICE CREAM

Posted by Turkey Hill Team on July 8th, 2009

This was posted on the Ice Cream Journal a while ago, but we thought we’d bring it back for a second look.

This container of Turkey Hill French Vanilla Ice Cream was purchased by a customer a while ago, who then sent us this picture. No word on whether this happy half gallon will be sold for thousands on eBay or attract hoards of mystified and adoring fans, but as far as cultural icons go, the smiley face is right up there with the best of them.

NOTE: Some of you asked in comments about this. Yes, this is exactly how the ice cream looked the first time she opened it. No human intervention with spoons or fingers at work here, just good old fashioned random luck!

icecreamface.jpg

By the way, how’s everyone’s National Ice Cream Month so far? We’ve been lucky (at least here in Lancaster County) to have some beautiful weather lately, which definitely makes celebrating ice cream a little more fun!

  8. Mrs says:

I’m glad that it’s not too hot here (we don’t need heat to eat ice cream, anyway). For awhile it was so hot here that I was concerned that this summer would be a scorcher. It’s always the right weather for ice cream, though.

  9. Lori says:

The weather is nice, but I like rain.

  10. Cathy says:

  35. i scream says:

now was this face seen mysteriously upon opening the carton, or was it man made? the article doesn’t say, and I am sure curious to find out. Crazier things have happened. I think that opening a fresh carton of ice cream is my favorite part. The top layer of cream, as well as the cream that sticks to the top are the most delectible. I always lick the top cover, and skim the top off the ice cream before scooping myself a bowl. Yum. If I were to open a fresh carton of vanilla bean ice cream right now, I would create a smile like that in my ice cream…with my tongue :) yumm

  36. CherylS22 says:

Interesting photo! I am enjoying these posts every day to celebrate National Ice Cream Month.

  37. Meg says:

Haha…2nd scoop…i get it because this photo is reappearing. I knew I had seen it somewhere before. Its funny how I have a photographic memory for every picture of ice cream I have seen. Can note the quality, color, shape, texture, add ins, container, and other aspects of the photo and have them permanently imprinted in my brain. Yet when I am studying for my anatomy tests I have no where near the memory for those details. I guess that just goes to show where my mind is…ice cream is just way more interesting and important than learning the 206 bones in the body and all the nerve and blood pathways!

  38. Rachel H. says:

I love this…just the exact reason a girl should eat ice cream everyday!

  39. Sharon says:

What fun it must have been to open that carton!

  40. Barbara A says:

  59. Cinda F says:

I can see where someone took the round icecream scoop to make the eyes in the icecream. Adding a smiley imprint perhaps on the turkey hill icecream sandwich wafers or on the cakes would be a great idea like you find imprinted on some crackers!!! This smiley face would remind EVERYONE to smile when you eat the best icecream Turkey Hill. What better season than summer to eat icecream to cool you off but I like it year round.

  70. Turkey Hill Team says:

No, no…she actually did take the lid off for the first time and this is what she saw. It was a complete random natural occurrence!

  71. J Mike says:

After I thoroughly wash my hands, I let my index fingers do the designing, but my wife scolds me for unsanitary behavior.

  72. Darcy F. says:

Has not been “ice cream weather” this summer so far in the Northeast, but that doesn’t deter us from eating Turkey Hill!!

  73. Linda Barnes says:

Who cares whether someone put the smiley face on the ice cream or it was an act of God! Where’s the scoop!?!? Gimmme some ice cream!! Quick before it melts!!!!!!

Some random natural occurrence wouldn’t you say? eBay no way, I’m sure all she did was open it, marvel at this occurrence, take a picture of it and then she ate it plain or with toppings. What are the odds of this happening again? Carefully check your TH in the future, who knows what picture may naturally occur.
