ASK ERNIE: HOW DO I KEEP MY HUSBAND FROM STEALING MY ICE CREAM?

Sandra O. of Bradford, PA asks: “I love your pints, especially your Chocolate Mint Moose Tracks pints. I nibble on it a little at a time, but it never lasts more than few days because my husband always eats it all. How do I keep my husband from stealing my Moose Tracks?!”

I should preface this by saying that I’m not a professional marriage counselor, but I am an ice cream expert, so that sort of qualifies me to tackle this thorny issue.

I’ve heard of special combination locks you can put on your pints to keep would-be thieves out of your Moose Tracks, but I’m going to suggest a much more diplomatic solution here. (I’ve been married for many years, I know all about marital diplomacy!)

I’m assuming you’ve already tried talking to him about it and that hasn’t worked. Next, I’d suggest maybe buying separate containers of Moose Tracks – one for him and one for you. But I’m guessing he’d probably polish his off and move on to yours.

I guess if diplomacy doesn’t work, you could try something a little sneakier. Maybe you can store your pint inside a larger ice cream container he’s sure not to go prying into. Or bury it in the back of the freezer under some frozen peas. He’ll never look there. If anyone has any other suggestions – and I’m sure you do – please share them in a comment. Sandra needs our help!

  1. Christine says:

I would buy 3 containers hit one deep in freezer put his name on one and yours on another and start eating his first and enjoy

  2. Caitlin says:

At the very least, make him replace yours when he eats it! Every time he gets into your ice cream, he needs to put a dollar in a jar. When he finishes it, he can take the jar to the grocery store and buy you some more. lol

  3. Cathy says:

Find a flavor that you love that he doesn’t like! (May be tough with Turkey Hill because they’re all so good!!!)

  4. maggie says:

This may fall under that “for better or worse” clause…however, there are priorities-threaten him with divorce!!!

  5. Evan Thomas says:

How do I keep my parents from eating my ice cream stash?

  6. Greg says:

Turkey Hill has pints? All we have around here are the 1 1/2 and 1 3/4 quart sizes. I guess you need a Turkey Hill store for those, (or at least a PA store) like the Orange Tea.

  7. Grace says:

    haha, I don’t even have a husband. ;)

  8. Yvonne says:

Since each in our family prefers different flavors, it’s not too hard to keep one for each – as long as I get their favorite flavors! You could try putting labels on, though I’ve never tried that solution.

  9. Fergie says:

Hide the ice cream inside some other container. I call it ‘hiding in plain sight’.

  10. Mrs says:

I’m all for the hiding the good stuff. I keep the not-my-favorite kinds up front and the kinds I really like in back behind other things. What he doesn’t see, he doesn’t know he’s missing.

  11. Linda Leffler says:

I would put my pint in a 1# coffee can, husbands would never think ice cream was in there. Linda

  12. Lori says:

I like Linda’s idea. I think the coffee can would work.

  13. Sharon says:

Sandra does well to have it last a few days. The bigger containers don’t last that long here! We have “party cake” ice cream right now, and I’m surprised there is still some left as we’ve had it for two days.

  14. Joyce says:

Having 6 people in the family, it is hard to keep favorite flavors around. We have an upright freezer that is not in the kitchen. So, I put the things that I want the kids to eat in the freezer compartment of the fridge in the kitchen. Then, the things that I want to hide in the bottom drawer of the upright freezer. The key is don’t put it eye level. Make him work to find it. I stick some packages of vegetables on top as they are not likely to look there.

  15. eunice b says:

my husband & i each have our own box…maybe he wants his own of a different flavor or else just share w/ him…after all it’s just ice cream

  16. Lauren says:

I like the idea of hiding it inside another container of ice cream that the husband doesn’t like the best!

  17. Lauren says:

Follow-up to my last comment: An added bonus of putting the ice cream inside another container of ice cream is that you have to eat all of the ice cream in the bigger container first!

  18. NSH says:

There’s no diplomacy when marriage meets ice cream – it’s all out war. DH knows not to touch my pint because I will squirt dish soap into his containter! LOL! Works every time!

  19. Joan says:

I have so many favorite flavors of Turkey Hill I don’t have this problem. Poor Sandra I would be really angry if I went to the freezer and found my TH gone. You should save a bag from the family size veggies and hide your pint in that bag.

  20. Lisa says:

I like the one where you hide it behind the frozen peas, or some equally yucky veggie!

  21. Karen says:

Since I eat so much more ice cream than my husband I think I’ll keep quiet on this topic.

  22. Karen says:

Sorry I can’t be overly helpful. My only thought is stock up and share. We have an extra freezer in the basement and it’s 50% ice cream.

  23. Joe B says:

How else, always make sure you have extra, or create a distraction when he has yours….

  24. Clifford says:

The orange and cream are very good too like the old creamcycle.

  25. lee carr says:

always buy 2, one for you and one for your husband. label them and when his is gone and he tries to sneak yours, then you got him “red handed” and he better be ready for his punishment.

  26. Jennifer says:

I hide my ice cream behind the veggies. If he finds it there, I agree with the idea of hiding it in a larger container of something he hates. Also, don’t eat it in front of him. That only reminds him that he hasn’t had any. I hate to be an ice cream hoarder but we women have to do what we must.

  27. Yolanda says:

I guess because I’m newly married, what do I know, but I’d carve words at the top of the Ice Cream “STOP! Get your own!” lol

  28. Karen says:

I’m pregnant so my husband knows not to touch my Turkey Hill ice cream !!! LOL or I’ll send him out for some more at 2 a.m.!

  29. Karen says:

I have the opposite problem – my husband won’t eat the ice cream he buys. He buys what he likes, has one bowl and that’s it. Then I’m stuck eating flavors that aren’t my favorites to make room for the good stuff.

  30. Pati says:

Luckily, my hubby and I don’t like the same flavors!

  31. Rebecca says:

Hide it inside a veggie bag

  32. Stefanie Schmidt says:

Great advice. I love sharing my Turkey Hill because it is so good. But, I always keep it in the house.

  33. Mary Anne says:

Hide it in a freezer container with a label of something that he doesn’t like. Fortunately, my husband & I don’t have that problem, because we always have at least 2 different flavors in our refrigerator freezer and several others to choose from in our basement chest freezer.

  34. Pat says:

    Just keep buying more! :)

  35. bill says:

i just always have lots in the freezer so there is always some there.

  36. janice fitch says:

just eat the whole thing at one sitting.

  37. Meg S says:

    Sandra—

I had the same problem with one of my roomates at my last apartment! She was always stealing my ice cream. What I ended up doing was after buying the half gallon tub, I divided it into 4 or 5 plastic containers that I reuse (one was an old margarine container, another a cream cheese one, etc) And then your husband will never think to look in them.

  38. I scream says:

If that doesn’t work then next time he comes home from work and expects dinner on the table you can withhold his meal until he comes up with the ice cream for you. Have him stop on his way home from work every night if he needs to to keep the ice cream stocked or else he won’t get his meal!

  39. Joe says:

buy a separate small freezer for yourself and pad lock it!!!

  40. Bessie Chaisson says:

I love the dish soap idea that someone mentioned earlier. Some might think it evil, but nowhere near as evil as someone else eating my ice cream!

  41. Faith says:

Well if its my husband or Turkey Hill Ice Cream…..I’m sorry honey you have to go. I’ll only take him back if he brings a year’s supply of Ice Cream in a Big Truck as an I’m sorry gift.

  42. linda says:

His and hers ice cream. its the only way to go.

  43. IceCreamFiend says:

Share and share alike!! There’s lots of TH for all to enjoy! (I know I do!)

  44. brenda says:

    Good Morning turkey hill fans,
In my house hold we all share tureky hill ice cream, I have to buy extra ice cream something, I try to keep turkey hill vanilla on and all the time. My grandson sometime add peanuts, chopped fruits, candies and chocolate pieces to it at time.

  45. jane conrad says:

There’s such a thing as Chocolate Mint Moose Tracks? Where? Why haven’t I seen it in my local stores? Sounds heavenly!

  46. Douglas says:

Just buy enough ice cream for the both of you so that he doesn’t have to steal yours.

  47. Norma says:

    Dear Sandra,

I’ll be in Bradford on Sunday, and I’ll bring you some more Moosetracks.

  48. alicelynne says:

Yes, I have had to use several tactics, also…eat it all at one time..hide it…or label it (FOR ME)!!!

  49. christie says:

We each have our own shelf in the freezer and he knows not to have anything on the lower level because that is all me!!!

  50. Susan K Lapp says:

I Do Not Have To Worry About That THANK GOD! :) I Buy 4 1/2 Gallons Of Turkey Hill Per Nite And Bought Our Own Separate Ice Cream Freezer Now Too! Try It The Cost Is Definately Worth The Taste Of TURKEY HILL!!! :)

  51. Carol says:

How can a pint of Moose Tracks last for a few days?????

  52. Margie says:

I always have enough Turkey Hill on hand but I always have some hidden in the back of the bottom drawer of the freezer, “just in case of an emergency”!

  53. Tom Dinder says:

Try putting it into a container(not clear, though)and label it “spinach” or some other food he absolutely hates and I’m sure he won’t touch it.

  54. SHIRLEY says:

I’m not sure that any of these ideas would work. A different kind of food container in the freezer would have made my ex curious. A package of peas that didn’t lay like the rest of the veges would have drawn attention also. If you only have a fridge/freezer combo many of those don’t have the depth to hide things however a chest freezer would be excellent to bury things at the bottom and the advantage is there is room to stock up on frozen foods when they go on sale. That way you always have a larger variety of foods to choose from when planning your meals.

  55. Lorraine says:

We always have enough to share. Ice Cream is a staple for us.

  56. Carol Triano says:

The first thought that came to my mind was put the container in another container, such as a quart of yogurt, cottage cheese, just be creative.

  57. Alexa says:

How anyone can stop at a few spoons of moose tracks ice cream is beyond me – a pint is gone before anyone can steal any

  58. Deb says:

Just buy more and have several pints on hand at one time. I’m still not sure how a pint lasts that long, because where I come from, the pint goes in one sitting.

  59. Russ says:

    Just buy more containers!

  60. mary lou says:

You each have your own carton of ice cream, give him fair warning then if he gets into your carton he should sleep in the doghouse.

  61. Awilda Mapelli says:

Hide it, or put a note on it that tells him to make sure he saves you some. He should replace it if he finishes it at the least. I liked the withholding dinner until he replaces it idea. lol

  62. Fred says:

Your husband must be addicted to Moose Tracks and that is why he cannot control his actions so you will need to take him to buy the larger container for himself.

  63. Mary says:

All’s fair in love and ice cream. I think the payment idea is a great one. When he eats your ice cream–he has to contribute toward the next pint and go to the store. My next move would be eating his pint before he gets to it.

  64. Ginny Miller says:

Like the others, I don’t see how you can
make it last more than one sitting! But I would buy enough for both to share. Realizing that he will probably eat more than you..buy him an extra one! When I read on this site what a serving of ice cream was I was shocked. We ususally have our ice cream around 8:30 in the evening cause my hubby goes to bed around 9…no wonder we were putting on those extra pounds. We were having at least 3 servings at a time.
BUT WE LOVE OUR TH ICECREAM!!!

  65. Brooke says:

In our house it is the opposite. My husband hardly ever eats ice cream and I can easily go through a container each week. I like the idea of hiding it behind the veggies!

  66. Dan says:

Hide it, or buy enough of the same…

  67. Darcy F. says:

Ok first of all, a pint?? Who buys a pint of ice cream? Ice cream is like diamonds…why bother with anything less than a carat…translated to ice cream, anything less than a quart and a half is just palin silly.
Then, doubly troubling is how a pint could possibly last more than a day? Add to that the nibbling thing and you’ve lost me. Sorry..Ernie you’re too nice, she gets what she deserves for too many ice cream faux pas.

  68. Mary H. says:

Just buy a bigger container of it and enjoy sharing it with him, lucky lady!

  69. Sue says:

I’d buy hubby his own ice cream,, label it. If he eats all of his,,TUFF,, he can’t have yours! If he pigs his down first, tell him to go out & buy himself more! Rules to live by! lol

  70. caroline says:

Come on you are not clones. We all have different tastes. There has to be a flavor he likes more than yours so buy him that. We both like “Box of Chocolate” but I can substitute Raspberry Swirl and be happy if hubby polishes off. I keep his favorites around to keep him out of my Raspberry. With the Box of C I get about 4 of them so it lasts a couple of weeks

  71. Beth Z says:

Here’s an idea…Label the two ice creams “His” & “Hers”…when “His” is gone, maybe your could “sell” him some of “Her” scoops. Payment could be a Back Rub for you, Cleaning the Bathroom, Getting your Feet Massaged, Organizing the Garage, etc…these may seem like extreme ‘charges’ for the payment of Turkey Hill Ice Cream, but remember Turkey Hill really is that good! :-)

  72. Janet says:

I hide it in the back of the freezer and put things in front of it. Most people are to lazy to move things around and look. This way i know when i want it, its there for me.

  73. Maryann Striff says:

I don’t have a husband, but my son eats ALL the ice cream! When I buy ice cream, which is every week,I usually try to eat some after I unpack. Sometimes I tell him I ate out of the container, thats what he does to me, so now he won’t eat out of that container. I guess you can say I’m teaching him 2 lessons; eating out of the container is disgusting and I get to have my ice cream and eat it too!

  74. CMC says:

The best solution I have is to eat it all before anyone else can! That always worked for me. (Gee is THAT why I needed to lose 80 lbs?)

  75. Bert says:

    Just buy more.

  76. Nancy says:

My husband and I always share our ice cream – he usually eats more but that’s ok with me.

  77. Robbin L. Netz says:

A variety of flavors in pints for you, buy him a few of his favorite flavors in the larger size. Afterall, guys are supposed to eat more…as long as it’s Turkey Hill!

  78. Nancy (NJ) says:

I think Beth Z. has the right idea about paying back with favors so it’s a win win situation but you should BUY THE LOCK!!!

  79. ERNEE says:

we got 2 small frigerators for each of us a yours mine and ours. love it

  80. barbara kendall says:

If I get a new flavor that it limited, I tell him it is NOT good and have it for myself!! Barbara

  81. Ann R. says:

Dear Sandra, Save empty bags from frozen vegetables – peas, corn, fries, etc. Hide your pint inside and close it with a twist tie. (You might have to put some crumpled paper towels in too to conceal the shape of the container.) Hope this helps.

  82. Denise says:

    Share is fair!

  83. Dalton A. says:

I agree Share is Fair, as long as no one eats more…hahahahahahahaha

  84. Lilly says:

I know what you’re feeling. I get hungry for my favorite ICE CREAM and go to the freezer and oh shucks, my husband has eaten the last of it.
Just buy double so you don’t have to share your container.

  85. Sue says:

By his favorite and your favorite, hoping that each one will stick to his own…or just hide it behind the fish sticks.

  86. Ann says:

Don’t be greedy, just be faster! Eat bigger helpings or eat it for breakfast! My husband is always up later than I am so he eats ice cream while I am sleeping, but it doesn’t bother me, I eat some before he gets home and then some after dinner with him. So in the end we both end up getting our fill. Just be glad you live in a state that has Turkey Hill Ice Cream!

  87. Jane says:

Buy a bigger container and so it stays fresh with no ice crystals, cover the top with waxed paper.

  88. Fred C says:

Unfortunatly ice cream in a marrage is common property.I have to make an extra trip a week just for ice cream :-)

  89. Bob Kessler Jr says:

I’m lucky in my household. My wife prefers cakes and pies with a little ice cream on top. I prefer ice cream only. Our Turkey Hill lasts somewhat longer than Sandra and her husband’s. Maybe Sandra should warn her husband of the possible weight gain by eating all of her ice cream.

  90. debbie F. says:

My husband and my flavor tastes are quite different so we don’t have a big problem with this..but when i find a flavor that is both our favorites I give him his container and then keep mine at the bottom of our large chest freezer…he usually doesn’t look there. If I keep a supply of his favorites he usually doesn’t bother mine

  91. Jim says:

My wife is territorial about her ice cream also. as a guy if it’s in the freezer it open territory. It sounds like an opportunity for Turkey Hill to sell gallons of the best sellers.

  92. Tina says:

No freezer can ever have too much ice cream in it!! Just buy extra! My husband and I have totally different tastes in ice cream so I don’t have that problem!:)

  93. Bruce Kiel says:

I love ice cream, but I’m a nibbler, which leaves plenty for my wife to indulge as well! ALWAYS SHARE!

  94. sandy says:

    buy him his own pint.!!!

  95. gianna says:

well, just buy a different flavor and place that in front of your flavors so he’ll reach for that one first. if you see he keeps eating that one then continue purchasing for him and continue keeping yours behind his flavors. or just share and buy more pints!

  96. Jennifer says:

I always buy several flavors at one time and we share them all…that’s what marriage is all about (give and take)

  97. BETTY says:

you will have to buy more ice cream lots more

  98. Stephanie says:

I have the same problem, except its worse. To preface the story I am staying with my in future inlaws for the summer. Anyway, I will buy ice cream and then future father in law will eat it all, but because he is “watching his weight” wont even buy anymore, so everytime I come back for the weekend the ice cream is always gone because he doesnt want to replace it because supposedly he doesnt want to eat it, but he has zero self control, I even tried moving it to a different freezer (because we have 3). Nothing works. Even if I buy a boring flavor, that I know he doesnt prefer he still eats it.

My suggestion for you would be similar to what other people are saying. Ask him what his favorite flavor is (or maybe you already know) and then keep that stocked and then maybe he will leave yours alone. Otherwise, you just have to love him for the ice cream hog he is. (lucky for me my fiance doesnt appreciate the joys of ice cream and prefers other treats).

  99. Fran says:

Why not buy a half gallon and hide your portion in a freezer container?

  100. Ellen says:

Sandra, if hiding it somewhere in the freezer doesn’t work then buy him lots of his own but still hide yours.

  101. Cheryl S says:

Oh my gosh–I know how she feels–my husband eats his ice cream and then starts in on mine!!!!! It doesn’t matter what flavor it is–no ice cream is safe at my house!!!!!!!

  102. mary says:

I do not worry about my husband, I give him his own bowl, I worry about sharing with the puppies, they love turkey hill too

  103. Cinda F says:

I have that problem not only with freezer but also refrigerator products with thehusband. My husband cannot stand bran or bran muffins so I wrap the item in foil with my name and write bran or bran muffin on the label and he doesn’t touch it. So find a food item your husband can’t stand and wrap your product and put a label of the food he hates on the product. Good luck.

  104. ida says:

i hide my in a plastic bag and tell him what ever is in plastic bags it is off limits it is for a special event, i also hide it in the back of the freezer, that usually works.

  105. bill says:

my wife serves me my ice cream. she also locks the downstairs freezer to keep everyone out. So who knows whats in there

  106. Sarah says:

Guess you should find a grocery store that delivers and then put Moose Tracks on auto delivery – a large carton for hubby and the pint for wifey.

  107. kathy w says:

if my husband tried to eat my ice cream i would be very upset, he would either have to get his own or do without, not really i would buy a larger containtor, ( & hope i could eat faster than him.

  108. Donna says:

No comment. It is hard to keep a good thing around.

  109. Kim Domines says:

I love ice cream. I eat it often. Most of the time in the summer to cool down. I love Turkey Hills ice cream, they have many to choose from. I like so many kinds my husband goes crazy waiting for me to decide which one I want all the time. My favorite is anything that has to do with chocolate or raspberry. I hope you make more with them ingredients. Keep up the good work. Kim

  110. Frank says:

Freezer pad locks work around this house.

  111. Debbie says:

I solved this problem at my house! I filled an empty plastic whipped topping container with the ice cream, put the lid on and put it back in the freezer, right under another container of real whipped topping. I also left the original Turkey Hill Ice cream container in the freezer with about 2 tablespoons in the bottom. He justs thinks we are running out of Ice cream.

  112. Kathy F says:

My problem isn’t a husband, but an adult son. I’ve found that if there’s something I want to keep for myself, I can hide it under thefrozen veggies in the chest freezer in the basement. He rarely goes in there, and I’ve hidden other things like that in the past (chocolate for example) which no one else ever found :)

  113. Barb says:

I have this problem with my husband and son. The best thing that works for me is to put it into another plastic container because they never open anything up to see what really is in it. Just make sure they don’t catch you getting in your own stash. Also, I buy them both their own ice cream too.

  114. Emilia Napoleon says:

I never realized how lucky I am! My husband and I don’t like the same kind of ice cream. I like “stuff” in mine or else it has to be coffee or choc chip mint. He likes “plain” ones..choc, vanilla, etc. but not coffee or mint. We only eat each the other’s favorites when we run out of our own..solution…always have plenty of both.

  115. Alaina says:

It looks like we’ve all been in the same boat. Intrafamily ice cream thievery is a much larger epidemic than I thought!

  116. Kevin says:

This is one of the reasons why I am glad I live alone. No one is there to steal my ice cream.

  117. Whezie says:

I have to hide my black raspberry sometimes so my husband doesn’t eat it all!

  118. Bonnie Wemyss says:

I don’t worry about my husband stealing my ice cream as I am all about the chocolate and he is all about the vanilla!

  119. Judy Foster says:

Whenever I go in Turkey Hill to purchase some of their excellent ice creams I feel like a mouse in a cheese factory.

  120. Barbara Arabas says:

Is there a flavor he doesn’t like? Buy a pint of that, keep the container and transfer the Moose Tracks into that

  121. Joy Morse says:

For goodness sakes – just eat the whole pint at once – when he is not home!!

  122. Joy Morse says:

For goodness sakes – just eat the whole pint at once – when you are alone!

  123. Rosemary says:

With my college aged children home, I buy multiple flavors to keep everyone happy. They don’t always tell me when they finish off a container though.

  124. Shari says:

She could try writing on the container SANDRA’S DO NOT EAT!!, like my daughter used to do.

  125. EMMA L HORTON says:

GIANT HAS TURKEY HILL ICE CREAM ON SALE THIS WEEK….AM GOING TOMORROW AND GUESS WHAT I WILL BRING HOME

  126. Juanita Priester says:

I agree with the 3 container approach.

  127. John Zullo says:

Love the new selections in the pints

  128. Cheryl Dunlap says:

I have always placed my cartons of ice cream into another larger size plastic storage cntainer. It helps protect against ‘freezer burn’ as well as being too much trouble for the males to open and look inside to see what it is !

  129. MaryBeth Schulte says:

I’d put a note on your ice cream container saying “$1.00 a scoop,” and then I’d collect!

  130. Frank Casey says:

What can I say about Turkey Hill ice cream. Well it’s simple. Turkey Hill gobbles up the competition.

  131. Veronica Buzzanca says:

I buy 2 or 3 at a time and always hide one under the vegs. in bottom/back of freezer. He is happy finishing off the ones he can see and doesn’t USUALLY bother to look for more!
