We’ve all been there. Standing in the ice cream shop with way too many choices in front of you and only a few minutes to make up your mind. You always think you’ll be able to choose the flavor you want before the attendant finishes helping the person in front you, but, inevitably, you’re sometimes caught off guard when it’s your turn. It happens to me all the time.
Maybe you made up your mind or maybe you’ve got a favorite flavor that you always opt for, but more often than not, your three minutes to decide turns into three seconds when, with scooper in hand, the server asks, “May I help you?”
So you choose one of the eight flavors you were debating, and hope you’ll like it. Of course, it’s silly to hope that you’ll like it, because you always do.

If you’ve got a technical question about the ice cream making process or some other inquiry about the nuances of America’s favorite treat, chances are Ernie has the answer. He might not be able to answer all questions, but he’ll try his best and some may be featured on the Ice Cream Journal.
I think there needs to be a hotline people can call for when we’re in a situation like that
I always choose mint chocolate chip. Maybe that makes me boring, but it also makes me happy.
I am happy with any ice cream with chocolate, so it isn’t hard for me to pick one. Getting my family members to decide is another matter!
Can’t I just get one of everything that looks good?
There’s always vanilla.
“So you choose one of the eight flavors you were debating, and hope you’ll like it. Of course, it’s silly to hope that you’ll like it, because you always do.”
I’ve tried flavors before that I wouldn’t get again. It’s very rare, but unfortunately it does happen.
Yes, sometimes it is a tough decision!! Now I want to go to an ice cream shop…
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve decided to try new flavors, not just chocolate. Last time, I tried Rum Raisin and liked it!
That is why I order a large cone\cup with different scoops of each flavor I can order. lol
The simple answer: “I’ll have a scoop of each please.”
*drools* Ice… cream…. yum!!!
I think the best solution for a predicament like this is just to get one scoop of each. The most I have ever gotten at an ice cream shop was 5 (probably because it was my parents treat and I felt too guilty to make them pay like tripple the price of their treat and didn’t want to look like a cow!) But when I am at home, I usually have the freezer stocked with about 6 cartons of different flavors so that I can mix and match when i get to enjoy my dessert bowl each night. That way you are not stuck making difficult decisions and potentially leaving out the most delicious flavor!
Oh my gosh, this rainbow assortment of flavors and colors is really making my mouth water. I have to remember to read this blog AFTER dinner so as not to spoil my appetite (as my Mother frequently warns me). Anyways, seeing as I am a bit obsessed with this picture I have to comment on which flavors I would choose…ranking them from 1-10 in order that they appear (front to bottom and left to right) My order is as follows
1 = #8 the mint chocolate chip…yum
2 = #1 the maple brown sugar looking one
3 = #10, which appears to be a classic chocolate (can’t go wrong)
4 = #7 which I like to imagine is a marshmallow flavor just like fluff
5 = #3 could pass for cookie dough? Although I hope the cookie dough is hiding at the bottom because I don’;t see a lto fo it
6 = #4 the bright orange which I hope is a punmpkin spice flavor to go great with cake
7 = #6 which I am not sure the flavor, but it is almost gone so it has to be a fan favorite
8= #5 looks like a classic French vanilla which will complement all the other flavors ina great way
9 = #9..I was a little werided out by the bright green byt this is a mystery flavor want ot give a chance
10 = #2 which I am calling cinnamon flavor to wash out my tastebuds after and freshen my breath -
I will take anyone but the green I am not sure what that is
Can there be any harder decision in life than deciding what flavor ice cream you want today? It’s a dilemma I love to live with.
i see mint choc chip and that’s all i see!!!
I like to mix my ice cream flavors but if you go to the Creamery on the Penn State campus, they do not allow flavor mixing so you have to buy a cup of each!
What is that electric green one???
Please dip me 1/2 gallon, put some of each flavor in it. There I solved my dilmena. LOL. Linda
I stuggle with this every time (which is almost every week) when buying ice cream at the supermarket.
I just realized not only do I struggle at the supermarket but literally every night at home. I take out so many different flavors that not all of them can fit in my mug.
I like almost everything which makes it very tough.
Deciding which ice cream flavor to have takes your mind off you problems for that few seconds anyway! It is a BIG decision! LOL
looks good!
What is the flovor of that neon green ice cream? Eye catching!
It’s true…I often have such a terrible time deciding that I just choose none at all…I know it’s crazy, but it’s true!
Deciding is such a difficult thing, but I don’t think I have ever had an ice cream I didn’t like!
I usually go for anything chocolate!
I try to get multiple flavors whenever possible.
That decision is not much different than when I am in front of that long ice cream freezer in Wegman’s filled with all the flavors of Turkey Hill–which to buy?? That’s why we have at least 5 or 6 different flavors in our home freezer.
These flavors look so good. I always have trouble deciding which Turkey Hill flavor to try because they are all delicious!
I wish I had an ice cream shop display at home, so I would have a decision to make everyday. Sometimes life is hard. (heehee)
I wish I could go eat all the flavors behind the counter. I love ice cream!!!
I have two hands…..two or three scoops each and two cones…..that way I can try at least six right
Teaberry, now that is a flavor i haven’t seen in a long time
How about some cinamon pumpkin for the fall?
Can you ask for a sample? Over and Over Again! LOL! Of course but you don’t want to hold up the line..so you stick to the old stand by. At least I do!
Did anyone here of the coffee flavors, like amaretto, kahula, rum, french vanilla, and cappachinno? They are delicious! I wished they made them in the half gallons in stores. I love the kahluha the best. I don’t know how to spell it though, and sometimes I say it wrong, anyway it sure tastes great! I can have ice cream anytime a day. it doesn’t matter.
Been there, done that
When in doubt, go green!
I have been faced with that dilemma many times! I love ice cream!
When I can’t decide, I usually order a double dip of 2 different flavors. Then, I have my boyfriend order 2 other flavors. I like to taste as many as possible!
Still can’t find all the flavors of Turkey Hill in our area??? We have a freezer with two shelves just for ice cream—really !!!!! I have 29 cartons in there now !!!!! I am Blessed–I can only have Ensure/ice cream shakes for my total nutrition due to illness !!!! Thank you !!!!!
Every time I get ice cream, I get a different flavor. That way I’ll eventually taste them all!
I too have trouble deciding – there are just sooo many flavors!
I love your ice cream!
I scream you scream we all scream for ice cream! Isn’t it wonderful we live in United States of America!?!?! I heard that in other countries they don’t have the choices of products that we enjoy. So serve up another scoop of any flavor of Turkey Hill and celebrate our freedom.
The ice creams look Delicious, (& Mysterious -the bright green one, the orange hued ones)! I am willing to try them!
You can’t go wrong with any flavor!
That is so me! I like places that give tastings, but sometimes that just adds to the indecision!
I prefer taking out a couple of containers of Turkey Hill and scooping my own rather than those overpriced ice creams shops.
That picture reminds me of gelato stands in Italy. They are on street corners everywhere there. When we got home, thank goodness for duetto…reminds me of italy.
Yum..the picture looks like a delicious ice-cream shop.
If there is little remaining seems like many have selected this one-ask for a sample of it before it is gone.
Butterscotch is my favorite!
Wow! I know how hard it is to decide, sometimes I have to let the person behind me go ahead. What I would really love is for TH to offer ice cream cones just like a ice cream shop! Now that would really make life interesting! I know in NY State, they have a Stewart’s that sells both by the carton and the cone. How about a new franchise TH?
According to my husband, Vanilla is the only flavor that is needed. Although he does try something else once in a while.
Linda the days of the 1/2 gallons are long gone.
I have to admit – for me there is no favorite, I love them all! One day I might be in a Coco-Nutz mood, another in a Moose Tracks – it’s ALL good!
It would be all of the above. I would have a dish with each kind and sample and find what I like best.
I think you pick a wrong picture. It looks to me more like strained baby food than ice cream (peas, potatoes, squash, etc). The few times I am in an ice cream store (when with grandchildren) I stick with my standards. Hubby will try something he finds interesting.
I love trying different flavors. However, I have to stick to either low fat or nonfat and that seems rather limited.
I love chocolate chip cookie dough, but you can never go wrong with vanilla bean!
My dilemna in that situation is somewhat simplified by not being able to eat chocolate — but not much!
mmm they look so good
Wow, so many choices. I should be so lucky to have a store like that in my area.!!!
So many flavors… so little time !
I hate making decisions, I always want more than one!
I always tell them that I read slowly. There haven’t been many times I’ve made a choice that I didn’t like. Then there’s my husband–who always chooses VANILLA.
recall this option at the gelato shop Domplatz Cologne Germany My answer was go for vanilla LOL
Been there and done that. I hate when that happens. Don’t you??
My favorite Homemade ice Cream Parlor is an hour from our house, when i get a chance to go I get one scoop of my favorite..Chocolate with Peanut Butter cups mixed in and top it with another scoop of whatever flavor stikes my fancy at the time….I usually try something I haven’t had before.. one good thing, they let you sample.. so that always helps…and the best thing is they scoop it into homemade waffle cones… made fresh daily at the store
Get kiddie cone sizes of your top choices.
That’s the truth about hoping you’ll like it. Of course, it’s silly to hope that you’ll like it, because you always do.
It’s so hard to try something new when you know a flavor you’ve already had is delicious….that’s where I get torn!
I can deviate if there is a component I’m sure to like
I usually want to try a new flavor!
I like browsing all the different flavors but always go to my favorite
It’s always hard for me to make a decision. When I do, I always second guess and think maybe I should have gotten this or that.. Ho well….
That definitely looks like gelato in the pic. When I go out for ice cream, I tend to stick to getting a favorite flavor. But when it comes to gelato, I tend to ask for a little bit of several flavors. And usually, those flavors have to compliment each other. For example, one time I got the following 3 flavors: blueberry muffin, strawberry cheesecake, and birthday cake! Another good combination I like is coffee and tiramisu. In general, I like the more unique flavors… no plain vanilla or chocolate for me!
how about a half scoop of each, now that sounds perfect.
You got it right Sandy! I was thinking the same thing.
I had a delicious flavor at a place called Brehms(?) when I was in Texas last month – Blackberries and cream w/almonds frozen yogurt. It was so tasty I had no problem picking it again when we went back two nights later.
looks like a box of crayons, but eatable
LOOKS LIKE THE GELATO STORE MY DAUGHTER WORKS IN!! THINK IT’S HARD TO CHOOSE NORMALLY, IMAGINE KNOWING HOW FRESH EVERYTHING IS AND ALL THE INCREDIBLE WHOLESOME INGREDIENTS ARE USED. IT TURNS INTO A TASTE OF EVERYTHING!! GELATO HEAVEN!!
I usually end up with my favorite which is black raspberry.
I would like a bowlful of the bright green please — and hopefully it’s KEY LIME or LEMON/LIME — YUMMMMM!
I’ll take a little taste of each on one of those itty bitty spoons!
OMG! That Mint Chocolate Chip is just luring me in!
PICKING A FLAVOR IS A DIFFICULT THING TO DO. BUT I HAVE MY FAVORITES AND JUST GO FOR ONE OF THEM. THEN I JUST ENJOY.
THINK I’LL GO TO MY FREEZER AND HAVE SOME TURKEY HILL CHERRY. YUMMMMM!
WOW!! What a picture! I love ice cream and even though I say I’m going to try new flavors, I usually end up going to a few of my old stand-bys! lol I would love to know what the flourescent green flavor is in the picture!
They ALL look delicious!
Well I never had a flavor I didnt like & always try new flavors -just because!!
An ice cream lovers dream. YUM YUM
Just give me a spoon, what an adventure to try new flavors and maybe find a new favorite.
When I cannot make up my mind and have the time and money I would get a scope of each in a large, no huge bowl!
While they all look delicious, anything with cherries or strawberries will do.Good to mix it up once in awhile, though.
I hate when that happens. They all look so delicious!!!!
Birthday Cake is my bakeup pick.
When the pressure is on, after all the looking and even tasting sometimes, anything with coffee and chocolate and nuts or maple walnut always wins in the end.
Nothing beats Pumpkin Pie ice cream in the fall.
When I go to an ice cream shoppe, butter pecan is my first pick. If none available, anything with nuts in it. After nuts, peanut butter is the next choice. I’m tired of vanille, chocolate, strawberry. That used to be the only kind one could get when I was young.
I remember hot summer evenings in Philadelphia when I was a kid, when my mother said, “Want to go get some I.C.E.?” We lived in the last row of houses at the edge of the city, and I traipsed across the back lot and carefully crossed Ogontz Avenue to the local deli. I watched through the glass freezer front as the owner dipped out a quart of raspberry sherbet, swirling in front of the round scoop. I could hardly wait to eat it, so I usually ran back across the lot, the sherbet safe in its cardboard carton with a wire handle. Nothing was as refreshing as enjoying that treat! (Am I revealing my age here?) Ahh, memories…
The only way to go is TH Touchdown Sundae!!! It’s the best.
My daughter worked at a small shop where they made their own ice cream. They used containers very similar to the ones in the picture. I would order the pistaschio. I say would because they went under. Ah the economy!
I would like a little bit of each flavor!
I would pick 2 of my favorite flavors and have a scoop of both
O.K. This is where those “Penny Licks” would be of great value. Remeber the blog about them? You could try each flavor for 1 cent, then pick in quantity your favorite. Sounds like a plan to me!
I’m “old school”-strawberry is the best!
I can’t even decide what flavor to buy when I’m at the supermarket. Usually end up buying a couple of containers of Turkey Hill. We always manage to finish them up!
I normally go for ice cream in a large group of friends or family so I make sure I am always the last to give my order. This way I have some extra time to decide AND I get to try everyone’s before I get mine!
Sometimes it’s so hard to decide that I just send my husband or my son to get it and (funny) I always seem to like what they bring back.
Faith has the right idea!!! Get as many flavors they will scoop into the same cup-that’s AFTER you’ve asked for as many tastes as possible!!!
If I get stuck and don’t have time to really make up my mind, I just go with my old – but favorite – CHOCOLATE!
i really don’t have that problem because i’m a chocolate fiend….it’s when there’s a variety of chocolate ice cream to choose from…well then i get the darkest one!
A lot of the time it’s a tough decision for me. Usually I go for the peanut butter/chocolate combo (if it’s Reese’s) but usually I’ll stick with Cookies and Cream.
It’s not bad enough that you have to decide which ice cream you want. What about sherbert and frozen yogurt? Decisions, decisions.
When I go for icecream I usually have a few selections of flavors decided ahead of time. In my mind I love peanut butter so it is usually a flavor with that. On rare occasions I like to try something new but of course when Turkey Hill is available that is my first choice
Vanilla is always a safe bet when you are pressed to decide, especially if it’s Turkey Hill!
Make mine coffee!
Decisions at the ice cream shop? I have this dilemma every week at the grocery store!
What is worse is waiting in line BEHIND the indecisive person at the counter OR waiting BEHIND the person who is on her cell phone telling her indecisive significant other all the choices so she can bring something home for him
Online ice cream party? That’s awesome!
Looks like black raspberry and mint chocolate chip are favorites in that photo!!
A live ice cream party sounds like such fun! I spend most of my time writing. Sounds like a delicious break!
Jacqueline Seewald
THE DROWNING POOL, Five Star mystery–available through Amazon, B&N online or can be requested at your local library for summer reading fun!
Always tempted to try new stuff, but generally go for something with either chocolate or coffee in it.
How interesting! I guess I must be a visual person, because just looking at that picture I think… I immediately nix the pink ones and definitely the flourescent green one, I don’t care what they taste like!
But I’m charmed by the yellow-y one in the top right, and definitely the pure white one on the bottom left… hmmm….
sweet!
When in doubt I’d vote for vanilla so I could have hot fudge over it. Delicious!!
I usually get and old favorite then wish I’d tried a new one.
vanilla?
I have not met a flavor that I did not like, but I once tried a flavor that did not like me, so I stay away from it.
sometimes I feel like a nut and some times I dont and sometimes I feel like a vanilla and sometimes only chocolate satisfies me. whatever flavor I am eating, it is usually the one that looks best at that moment. variety, the spice of life.
I would venture and try some new flavor. You only live once. If I didn’t like it I could always try another flavor next time. But don’t give me alot of choices. I would take forever to decide and probably hold up the line as well.
I love trying new flavors!
Whenever I’m in that situation – having to decide in 3 seconds – I make it easier by ordering a 3 scoop cup. I then pick one fruit flavor, onw nut flavor and one choclate variety.
You just can’t go wrong!
My favorite ice cream is coconut almond with dark chocolate chunks. A local dairy in Northern Kentucky made it and when I moved to Tennessee my new husband would load a cooler with dry ice to bring it home with us each time we’d visit. We’ve heard you make something similar, but can’t find it in the store that carries your brand locally. I’ve had no luck with requesting flavors through management, so my husband has been making our own version of homemade. Someday I’d sure like to try yours!
Mint chocolate chip is my first choice.
I always want chocolate with peanut butter mixed in some way!

gentleman:
The only flavors that I eat are the
light colored ice creams:I was told as
a kid that all the dairy products sold
that became outdated & were on the turn
were sent back to the dairy.Where they
were dumped in the vat& coco was added
to produce choclate ice cream.
A.A.Zimba Jr.
Easy. I always choose vanilla so that I can get sprinkles.
Too many choices? There are more varieties of vanilla now than there were ice cream flavors when I was a kid. I guess the term “plain vanilla” is gone from the language.
I always pick my favorite, chocolate, and add a scoop of coffee. MMMMMMMMMM.
I love Turkey Hill icecream…as a child my aunt and uncle owned a icecream store with unique flavors like TURKEY HILL…your icecream flavors and the creamy texture reminds me of years gone by,thanks for the memories…keep up the good work…Anita
I like Butter pecan the best.
I will take one of each, thank you
mint choc chip is my favorite…love skinny minty!!!
My favorite is mint chocolate chip but it has to be the green ice cream. I always think I am going to get another flavor when visiting ice cream shops, but at the last minute it is Mint Chocolate Chip with the green ice cream. If they don’t have that, then I do have to pick another flavor. It’s impossible to go to an ice cream shop and come out empty handed !
To avoid all the indecisions, I go with my personal favorite, pistachio.
I wish Turkey Hill would add that flavor as I am sure it would taste great. Why not give it a test run or make it a limited entry on your flavor list?
Oh my goodness that picture alone is making my mouth water! I’m going to the freezer to get some Turkey Hill ice cream now!
To avoid any problems, I always go with my favorite, chocolate. Or if chocolate is not available, I pick anything that has a substantial amount of chocolate pieces in it. Ice cream is good anytime of year.
There are so many terrific varieties of ice cream available these days. This can certainly make selecting a specicific ice cream flavor difficult.Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough is always an excellent choice for me.
I can never make a decision!
years ago in the age of “ice cream parlors” there was a place called “MARGIES”. this little shop on a corner in BROOKLYN, N.Y.;made their own German ice cream. all their flavors were super. one in particular was incredible. PISTACHIO…. WITH REAL PISTACHIO PIECES AND BING CHERRIES . i HAVE NEVER TASTED PISTACHIO ICE CREAM THAT HAD THE ACTUAL TASTE OF PISTACHIO IN EACH SPOONFULL.THAT WAS THE 1940′S the shop IS NOW LONG GONE;ALONG WITH THAT NATURAL TASTE OF PISTACHIO.
There is nothing like good ole fashioned “Mint Chocolate Chip” on a hot summer day! It is soooo refreshing!!!
I have eaten Turkey Hill ice cream for years. I just got some vanilla bean last night to enjoy along with my Shoo Fly Pie from Dutch Haven. It was really good.
I usually bring the grankids with me, and I ask them for a lick of theirs.
They have some really unique combos.
Thank you for “Party Cake” ice cream. It’s my grandaughters’ favorite. They love the taste and the pretty princess colors.
VANILLA BEAN IS THE BEST
