AUGUST PRIZE: THE MINI SHOT GLASS ICE CUBE MAKERS

Posted by Turkey Hill Team on August 5th, 2009

To be honest, we had never even heard of this month’s prize until one of our Twitter followers told us about a very neat treat she was making for a party. It’s a special ice cube tray that you can use to create tiny shot glasses made from frozen liquid. We bought two of the trays pictured below and will be giving them away to two commenters chosen at random from all the comments this month.

What you fill your frozen shot glasses with is up to you, but “mrsbenedict” from Lancaster, PA, made her glasses out of root beer and filled them with Root Beer Duetto. Pretty cool, huh? Below are some step-by-step photos she sent us. Thanks, mrsbenedict!

Oh, by the way, in response to our last “wacky ice cream news” entry, story #1 was the fake (about the ice cream vendor who gave his ice cream away for free in exchange for a donation to the “Jimmy Watusic Fun”). Congrats to Betsy R. from Rockland, Massachusetts on being our randomly selected winner!

  1. Susan says:

What a cool idea for a hot summers day!
Would really enjoy giving that out at out next gathering!

  2. Dave says:

This sounds like such a great idea. I’m writing from a commuter rail train and it’s 90 degrees outside and there’s no AC on the train, so it’s hotter inside. I wish I had a set of these to come home to, today, up here in Boston!

  3. lee carr says:

very interesting, but what happens when the glasses start melting?

  4. Karen says:

At Christmas time a few years ago, one of the vodka brands was giving these away if you bought the vodka. We were there to pick up wine for a gift, so we didn’t get one.

  5. Beth says:

Oh boy, they sound and look great. I can almost taste them. But almost is not enough. I’d love to make them. A new idea to cool off here in FL. Won’t they be a hit. Of course, I would need to find the ice trays.

  6. Lisa says:

Thats cool!!!! I would love to do that. It looks yummy!!

  7. Delia says:

I was going to ask about the melting too. If they are made with frozen water, I don’t think it would be so bad, but if it’s sugared root beer, wouldn’t it get sticky? I can eat ice cream pretty fast, but liquids start melting faster.

  8. Delia says:

The root beer pairing is pretty neat though!

  9. Bethany @ Scoopalicious says:

    1. Winner Betsy is an old friend. She was so excited to win, and I was so excited for her! I am also excited she is a fan of The Ice Cream Blog — just like me! Way to go Bets! I told her she’d better go get some lottery tix because good things come in threes and Saturday she also won a prize at my ice cream party.

    2. This is the coolest idea EVER — i love the ice cream shooters! Thanks ICJ and mrsbenedict!

  10. Alison says:

That looks both messy and delicious!

  11. Stefanie Schmidt says:

Wow I would love to win this. Root Beer floats would taste so good with some turkey hill ice cream.

  12. Dani says:

Omigosh!! Those look SOOOOO good! Congratulations and well done to MrsBenedict for such an inventive creation!

I think to freeze my cups with 7-up and fill them with TH Southern Lemon Pie with a little mint sprig on the side would be the perfect cool-down treat at the end of a warm summer day! :)

  13. lori and john says:

oh my gosh..what a cool idea and a great way to eat your daily dose of ice cream on a hot summer day…or for that matter, any day. I am anxious to get a set of these for my own home…think of the choices you could create. I can hardly wait to get started…
ps: the duette is great if you are trying to watch your weight…makes you think you are getting a whole lot more.

  14. Mary Kruhm says:

This has to be a very cool idea (pun intended) when it’s a little after 6 a.m., I haven’t yet had my morning cuppa, and I’m salivating over root beer and ice cream.

  15. Peg says:

This would make my parties the coolest.

  16. Fran Z. says:

    Love it, so cute

  17. Susan K Lapp says:

Oh Yes! Great Cool Down For The Summer Turkey Hill!!! :)

  18. Brenda says:

Good Morning to all turkey Hill fans
I love that prize for this month. What I would do is I would fill it up with Turkey hill tea and put turkey hill ice cream in the center, better yet, I would have my granson would help me make them. They would chose to put in the cup and center. this would be good for all ages. I love them.

  19. mrsbenedict says:

hey everyone! it’s “mrsbenedict” here. thanks for the kind words – i had SO.MUCH.FUN making these. yes it was a little messy to eat and really only sticky before the root beer froze. they came out of the trays perfectly. as far as melting goes – most of my family didnt take that long to give it the chance. we broke up the root beer cup with our spoons (or teeth – not for the sensitive teeth owner!) and just enjoyed a fun way to celebrate the summer.

dani – i love your idea with 7up and lemon pie – sounds so refreshing!

  20. linda says:

looks like way too much work. I’d eat the ice cream before i was done

  21. Deb V. says:

What an ingenious idea — and who cares if it’s messy when it tastes great? Keep the new ideas coming. Thanks, mrsbenedict!

  22. amy says:

What a novel idea! My husbands 40th b-day is over the horizon and these would make great conversation pieces!

  23. Linda Leffler says:

I never saw ice cube shot glasses before, these are so neat. They would be great for the Holidays, I can just imagine making them with cherry soda and filling with TH ice cream, yum. What a great prize they would be. Linda

  24. Denise says:

    But doesn’t it get messy?

  25. Margaret M says:

My grandchildren would love to make these treats and you could really experiment with different flavors although the Root Beer sounds delicious. As far as being messy, just keep some wet-wipes on hand for a quick clean up. Thanks again Turkey Hill for another wonderful idea.

  26. caroline says:

A few years back hubby found ice cube trays that made chalk size round cubes that fit into water (or soda) bottles which I rarely use. This novelty I don’t think is more than a one “shot” novelty. It ain’t going to hold booze and the water would ruin ice cream. Maybe one that would make bowl size frozen chocolate syrup “might” have a use. I’d pass on it.

  27. Sue says:

Cute idea,, the possibilities are endless! Imagine the conversation these would generate at a party!

  28. Mary Gropp says:

    Now THAT’s frozen fun!

  29. Jill Moser says:

These would be great at a birthday party, or after dinner when you just need a little something refreshing and sweet. They could be served in a small bowl with a spoon, thus to avoid all the messiness.

  30. Dan says:

Very cool, would also allow the option of 100% juice types for the kids…

  31. Courtenay says:

Those are kind of cool. Great for a kid’s summer birthday party.

  32. Maryann Striff says:

Great recipe! I have tried the Raspberry Duetto with fresh raspberries and froze them in small cups. Also the lemon with chocolate chips. Thier both great combinations.

  33. Joanne says:

I would love to win these, Our family would eat them day and night!!!! I love the recipe too. This would have so many options to be creative. Thanks so much for sharing these with us.

  34. Ken says:

    I love your ice cream!

  35. Patti Sherman says:

What a novel idea. I could have another party at my campsite and serve this treat with all the ice cream I have left from my recipe win. These campers would think they died and went to heaven. My make your own sundae party was a hit and I heard someone remark “who knew you could have such fun without alcohol!” We love Turkey Hill!

  36. Carol Triano says:

Wow, what a great idea for a party, that is a fabulous and unique gift to win.

  37. Margie says:

I think another idea would be make them with vanilla Turkey Hill ( or root beer Duetto) and then add to root beer soda for a root beer float!

  38. lucy and laddie says:

Oh boy!!!! We sure like the looks of those rootbeer ice treats. I would really like to try one right now!! If we don’t win them where can we buy them??

  39. jilly b says:

i’ve made these using pureed fresh raspberries n raspberry duetto, by freezing the puree into sm dixie cup’s then filling with turkey hill ice cream, was a hit at friends pool party.

  40. Sue Russell says:

What a fantastic idea! The root beer floats look delicious. How about some vanialla ice cream served with whipped cream on top and then a little chocolate liquor dripped over the top.
Not for kids, but a great desert for adults!

  41. Tricia Ostermann says:

Love the play-by-play pics! I wasn’t really following at first read, but one glance at the pictures had me salivating!
