To be honest, we had never even heard of this month’s prize until one of our Twitter followers told us about a very neat treat she was making for a party. It’s a special ice cube tray that you can use to create tiny shot glasses made from frozen liquid. We bought two of the trays pictured below and will be giving them away to two commenters chosen at random from all the comments this month.
What you fill your frozen shot glasses with is up to you, but “mrsbenedict” from Lancaster, PA, made her glasses out of root beer and filled them with Root Beer Duetto. Pretty cool, huh? Below are some step-by-step photos she sent us. Thanks, mrsbenedict!
Oh, by the way, in response to our last “wacky ice cream news” entry, story #1 was the fake (about the ice cream vendor who gave his ice cream away for free in exchange for a donation to the “Jimmy Watusic Fun”). Congrats to Betsy R. from Rockland, Massachusetts on being our randomly selected winner!

If you’ve got a technical question about the ice cream making process or some other inquiry about the nuances of America’s favorite treat, chances are Ernie has the answer. He might not be able to answer all questions, but he’ll try his best and some may be featured on the Ice Cream Journal.
What a cool idea for a hot summers day!
Would really enjoy giving that out at out next gathering!
This sounds like such a great idea. I’m writing from a commuter rail train and it’s 90 degrees outside and there’s no AC on the train, so it’s hotter inside. I wish I had a set of these to come home to, today, up here in Boston!
very interesting, but what happens when the glasses start melting?
At Christmas time a few years ago, one of the vodka brands was giving these away if you bought the vodka. We were there to pick up wine for a gift, so we didn’t get one.
Oh boy, they sound and look great. I can almost taste them. But almost is not enough. I’d love to make them. A new idea to cool off here in FL. Won’t they be a hit. Of course, I would need to find the ice trays.
Thats cool!!!! I would love to do that. It looks yummy!!
I was going to ask about the melting too. If they are made with frozen water, I don’t think it would be so bad, but if it’s sugared root beer, wouldn’t it get sticky? I can eat ice cream pretty fast, but liquids start melting faster.
The root beer pairing is pretty neat though!
1. Winner Betsy is an old friend. She was so excited to win, and I was so excited for her! I am also excited she is a fan of The Ice Cream Blog — just like me! Way to go Bets! I told her she’d better go get some lottery tix because good things come in threes and Saturday she also won a prize at my ice cream party.
2. This is the coolest idea EVER — i love the ice cream shooters! Thanks ICJ and mrsbenedict!
That looks both messy and delicious!
Wow I would love to win this. Root Beer floats would taste so good with some turkey hill ice cream.
Omigosh!! Those look SOOOOO good! Congratulations and well done to MrsBenedict for such an inventive creation!
I think to freeze my cups with 7-up and fill them with TH Southern Lemon Pie with a little mint sprig on the side would be the perfect cool-down treat at the end of a warm summer day!
oh my gosh..what a cool idea and a great way to eat your daily dose of ice cream on a hot summer day…or for that matter, any day. I am anxious to get a set of these for my own home…think of the choices you could create. I can hardly wait to get started…
ps: the duette is great if you are trying to watch your weight…makes you think you are getting a whole lot more.
This has to be a very cool idea (pun intended) when it’s a little after 6 a.m., I haven’t yet had my morning cuppa, and I’m salivating over root beer and ice cream.
This would make my parties the coolest.
Love it, so cute
Oh Yes! Great Cool Down For The Summer Turkey Hill!!!
Good Morning to all turkey Hill fans
I love that prize for this month. What I would do is I would fill it up with Turkey hill tea and put turkey hill ice cream in the center, better yet, I would have my granson would help me make them. They would chose to put in the cup and center. this would be good for all ages. I love them.
hey everyone! it’s “mrsbenedict” here. thanks for the kind words – i had SO.MUCH.FUN making these. yes it was a little messy to eat and really only sticky before the root beer froze. they came out of the trays perfectly. as far as melting goes – most of my family didnt take that long to give it the chance. we broke up the root beer cup with our spoons (or teeth – not for the sensitive teeth owner!) and just enjoyed a fun way to celebrate the summer.
dani – i love your idea with 7up and lemon pie – sounds so refreshing!
looks like way too much work. I’d eat the ice cream before i was done
What an ingenious idea — and who cares if it’s messy when it tastes great? Keep the new ideas coming. Thanks, mrsbenedict!
What a novel idea! My husbands 40th b-day is over the horizon and these would make great conversation pieces!
I never saw ice cube shot glasses before, these are so neat. They would be great for the Holidays, I can just imagine making them with cherry soda and filling with TH ice cream, yum. What a great prize they would be. Linda
But doesn’t it get messy?
My grandchildren would love to make these treats and you could really experiment with different flavors although the Root Beer sounds delicious. As far as being messy, just keep some wet-wipes on hand for a quick clean up. Thanks again Turkey Hill for another wonderful idea.
A few years back hubby found ice cube trays that made chalk size round cubes that fit into water (or soda) bottles which I rarely use. This novelty I don’t think is more than a one “shot” novelty. It ain’t going to hold booze and the water would ruin ice cream. Maybe one that would make bowl size frozen chocolate syrup “might” have a use. I’d pass on it.
Cute idea,, the possibilities are endless! Imagine the conversation these would generate at a party!
Now THAT’s frozen fun!
These would be great at a birthday party, or after dinner when you just need a little something refreshing and sweet. They could be served in a small bowl with a spoon, thus to avoid all the messiness.
Very cool, would also allow the option of 100% juice types for the kids…
Those are kind of cool. Great for a kid’s summer birthday party.
Great recipe! I have tried the Raspberry Duetto with fresh raspberries and froze them in small cups. Also the lemon with chocolate chips. Thier both great combinations.
I would love to win these, Our family would eat them day and night!!!! I love the recipe too. This would have so many options to be creative. Thanks so much for sharing these with us.
I love your ice cream!
What a novel idea. I could have another party at my campsite and serve this treat with all the ice cream I have left from my recipe win. These campers would think they died and went to heaven. My make your own sundae party was a hit and I heard someone remark “who knew you could have such fun without alcohol!” We love Turkey Hill!
Wow, what a great idea for a party, that is a fabulous and unique gift to win.
I think another idea would be make them with vanilla Turkey Hill ( or root beer Duetto) and then add to root beer soda for a root beer float!
Oh boy!!!! We sure like the looks of those rootbeer ice treats. I would really like to try one right now!! If we don’t win them where can we buy them??
i’ve made these using pureed fresh raspberries n raspberry duetto, by freezing the puree into sm dixie cup’s then filling with turkey hill ice cream, was a hit at friends pool party.
What a fantastic idea! The root beer floats look delicious. How about some vanialla ice cream served with whipped cream on top and then a little chocolate liquor dripped over the top.
Not for kids, but a great desert for adults!
Love the play-by-play pics! I wasn’t really following at first read, but one glance at the pictures had me salivating!
This is a really great idea! Where do I get the trays? Thank you.
ok now that’s neat AND yummy looking!
HOW COOL!!!! ALWAYS LOOKING FOR NEW IDEAS AND TREATS FOR WHEN ANY OF MY GRANDCHILDREN COME TO VISIT – GREAT FOR THE ADULTS TOO.
Wow, what a fun treat and delicious too!
How about orange soda cups with TH vanilla for a creamsicle?
Seems like it would be perfect for frozen Irish Coffee with baileys and Turkey Hill ice cream.
I agree with Mimi where can we get the trays. Looks yummy!!!!!!!!!
Gives a new connotation to the Root Beer Float.
What a fun way to make ice cream treats! The whole family would love it.
This is a great idea and thank you for sharing it with all of us.

Looks good! What a fun idea!
when the glasses start melting you have a root beer float lol lol
Sounds great! Would like to try it for summer punch with possible fruit filling.
Hi!!
A shot glass of turkey hill ice cream is worth having a d double or even a triple shot. Once you have one it is hard to stop.
Gee, how about freezing cream soda and filling with TH vanilla ice cream topped with Amaretto Liquore!!!
I really love Root Beer !! It’s my favorite soda! I would LOVE to try Mrs. Benedict’s recipe w/ Duetto Ice Cream. Ask her if she’d E-mail me the recipe ? Thanks, Jeff
WHAT A GREAT IDEA FOR AFTER A BBQ. THEY NOT ONLY LOOK GOOD BUT WITH TURKEY HILL ICE CREAM YOU KNOW IT WILL BE JUST YUMMY.
CAN’T WAIT TO TRY IT.
Love Mrs. Benedict’s recipe for the shot glass trays. Don’t think I could just do one shot, though!
I love this! It is unique and such a great conversation starter. How about filling the bottom cup part with softened chocolate ice cream, freezing, and then topping it off with vanilla ice cream. Garnish with sliced strawberries and serve on individual dishes for a talk of the town dessert! Yum! And no mess!
If I had these molds I think I would try filling them with pineapple juice. Then I would fill the frozen cups with Turkey Hill orange sherbet and top it off with a sprinkle of toasted coconut.
Forget the freezer things and send me some TH.
Those Mini Ice Glass trays look very interesting. What she made looks oh so yummy. Just the right treat size for children and maybe adults who aren’t to hungry.
The root beer idea would be great! Pureed strawberries and vanilla ice cream would be tasty too.
I WANT THEM! I WANT THEM!
I VERY SELDOM GET WHAT I WANT BUT IT’S WORTH A TRY ANYWAY!
Your imagination is the only thing to stop you from coming up with all kinds of possibilities for the contents of these glasses. I wouldn’t mind experimenting. I don’t think it would be a losing proposition.
My mind is reeling—————:
frozen chocolate milk filled with strawberry ice cream.—-better yet: frozen chocolate milk filled with orange sherbet–or orange/vanilla duetto. I am drooling just thinking about it!!! add chocolate sprinkles and cherry for a festive touch.
The possibilities are ENDLESS~!!!
I want them ~~ I WANT THEM!!!
I’d like one too.
I’d put Turkey hill Vanilla icream ant a spoon full of Frozen orange juice(not mixed with water) on top.
Yum!Yum!
I’d take bananas and some heavy cream and blend into a puree, perhaps add some banana liqueur to it to “kick it up a notch,” and make my shot glasses with that. I’d fill them with Banana Split Ice Cream. A Grown-Up Banana Split. Wait – IS there such a thing???
The possibilities are endless. I love root beer floats and those look delicious.
I would use Turkey Hill Dutch chocolae topped with black cherry. The wife had given up on all ice cream till I got her to try Turkey Hill its the only ice cream that does not create a phlem problem for her.Was veryglad when Turkey Hill arrived in the Meadville area
Pretty cool.

These ice trays are awesome! I can already think of a million different ways I would love to use them. They are so clever.
Those look delicious. It’s great for summer desserts and I think it’d be great for a special holiday treat. A nice ice cream treat after Thanksgiving dinner. Yum!
Those look delicious. I am going to try them!
They look just a bit messy. TH ice cream in a bowl is just as yummy!
With use to create similar ice cream treats for our kids when they were young – now they insist on eating directly from the carton.
the ice cube shot glasses would be great on a hot summer day, with lots of Turkey Hill vanilla ice cream. That would be so refreshing.
does anyone else receive the daily blog a day late? this baffles me….
What a great party idea. These are really “cool”. I found guitar shaped ice trays for my daugter but couldn’t find the saxophone ones she really wanted. These would be a huge hit!
Absolutely great idea. I would love to serve this to guests. Can’t wait to share idea.
I’ll take mine in quart bottles!
now that’s a root beer float
My grandbabies would love them…fill each with their favorite flavor juice/kool-aid, then add their fav flavor TH ice cream! With 6 grands, there would be many combos!!
I googled “shot glass ice cube” and got many hits, including http://www.target.com and http://www.amazon.com/kitchen.
What a cool looking treat!!
Sorry about the delay in sending the blog updates, Gianna (and everyone else). The updates are programmed to go out every morning, so yesterday’s entries will go out the following day.
BUT (and here’s the good news), we just changed the setting so that they go out sooner, so hopefully that works!
Wow, I really want to try this. It looks like fun eating.
YUM! This can be used in a variety of ways – I love it! thanks for this chance.
Oh my gosh! I just finished off my root beer duetto ice cream and wish I had more. Why didn’t I think of making something like this?!
The perfect Scotch in the rocks
The ice cube tray sounds cool!
Have to start making a list of liquids to freeze and best flavors of T.H. ice cream to fill it with.
Apple cider with Baked Apple Dumpling – Limited Edition ice cream? Yum!
This is so awesome! Kuddos to mrsbenedict! Will have to look for these trays!
What a neet way to cool off, too bad they are so small guess a person will need more than one.
I love that idea! I hope to be able to get those and make it myself.
I would fill mine with melted chocolate, freeze them and then fill them with any favorite Turkey Hill ice cream. Chocolate Mint would taste yummy!
This is so cool …Wish I saw it before my party…but these are the kinds of things that keep me coming back to the ice-cream journal. Thank-you for sharing!
A perfect liquid for the shot glasses would be TH Ice Tea…any flavor you choose and then fill it with Lemon Duetto…What better combination than Ice Tea with Lemon
so cute!
i love the mini baked alaska idea!
What a great idea. I’m a cook in a commune, they will love this.
This is a great idea. I’m a cook who works for communes, they will love this.
