Ice cream lovers everywhere lost one of their own on Friday when 115-year-old Gertrude Baines passed away in Los Angeles. Gertrude was the world’s oldest living person and credited her longevity to a diet of fried chicken, crispy bacon and ice cream.
With Gertrude’s passing, 114-year-old Mary Josephine Ray of New Hampshire becomes the oldest living person in the United States (a woman in Japan who’s a few months older than Mary now holds the global title). Among Mary’s short list of life’s indulgences is, you guessed it, ice cream. It’s good to know that whether you’re 15 or 115, everyone’s favorite dessert can still be a regular treat!

If you’ve got a technical question about the ice cream making process or some other inquiry about the nuances of America’s favorite treat, chances are Ernie has the answer. He might not be able to answer all questions, but he’ll try his best and some may be featured on the Ice Cream Journal.
Sorry to hear of her passing. I hope to also be enjoying ice cream for many years.
God bless Gertrude and Mary….and ice cream lovers everywhere!
Aww, sorry to hear that Gertrude passed away, but it sounds like no one can say she didn’t live a long, happy, and ice cream filled life! Cheers to that!
Right on Mary enjoy every spoonful or lick!
Hi Turkey Hill fans, I read that story this past Sunday. I love it. All I can say is she is in heaven having herself more turkey hill ice cream. I bet she was a very nice person. God Bless her.
I can’t imagine living that long!
I’m sure Gertrude is enjoying her favorite flavors in heaven. And hopefully Mary will here on earth for a long time to come.
115, Grover Cleveland was President when she was born. She lived through the creation of the automobile and the airplane, Two World Wars, the Great Depression, Korea, Vietnam, the lspace program, putting a man on the moon, and the two gulf wars. The country transitioned from an agricultural baase to a manufacturing base. She saw quite a bit of change.
Turkey Hill certainly and undoubtedly leads to a long, pleasant, comforting, and sweet life. As the New Year approaches later this week in the Jewish calendar, we add ice cream to our traditional apples and honey to ensure sweetness in the coming year.
God Bless both of them. I hope to live as long as them or longer by eating Turkey Hill Ice Cream everyday !!!!
That’s great news for those of us with a sweet tooth!
Also interesting – the oldest person to have ever lived (as far as has been documented), a French woman named Jeanne Louise Calment, loved to eat chocolate! She lived to be 122 years old.
Was there ever any doubt that ice cream is a favorite treat? We all should take a hint from Gertrude and Mary, EAT MORE ICE CREAM.
I think there is a connection to eating lots of ice cream and a long healthy life. My grandmother lived to be 99 1/2 and you could never leave her house without having a dish of ice cream. She kept her bowls in the freezer so the ice cream would stay nice and cold. I hope Turkey Hill prolongs my life!
Eating ice cream makes a person happy and happy people live longer than grouches.
When was the last time that a man was the oldest? there goes that equal stuff.
Ice Cream is always a great treat and if it helps you live longer, bring it on.
I love your ice cream!
i should live to be a ripe old age.
I don’t know if I would want to live that long, but I know when I do pass my belly will have plenty of ice cream there. My brother in law pass last Sept. and the last thing he had was TH ice cream. Linda

It is good to know that I am eating something right to contribute to a long life. God Bless Gertrude and Mary!

My Aunt Bert just celebrated her 100th birthday!! She is also an ice cream lover!
With all the ice cream I eat, I’ll live to be 150!
May I still be eating ice cream at 115!
To live to be that age is fantastic. Look at all that they have experienced. Let’s hope that Turkey Hill was her favorite ice cream.
Good news for all of us!!
God bless them!
Every Sunday, we had fried chicken and ice cream. Now whenever I have fried chicken, I have to follow with ice cream for dessert.
everyone likes ice cream, yes indeed they do, everyone likes ice cream,
I do, do you?
search the whole world over,
travel near and far.
everyone likes ice cream no matter where they are.
sorry but I needed to sing this.
Just goes to show you…live life and enjoy it and you could live forever. Ok, well not forever, but 115 years.
My mother is 95 and one thing you could always find in her freezer was ice cream. Even at the nursing home she is living in–she never turns down ice cream! I hope it is the secret to longevity.
Hi, I should live to be well over 100 too! I always have at least 4 containers of Turkey Hill ice-cream in my freezer. My husband always says where are you going to put any more ice-cream. I can never turn down a Turkey Hill ice-cream sale!!! I just love it!!!!
I have always been a fan of soft ice cream! I would drive out of my way to get it. Chocolate is the best and Hardie’s used to have the best!
Dear Lee Carr, I enjoyed your song!
& I scream, you scream, WE ALL scream for ice cream! As long as it’s Turkey Hill!
