We’ve talked about astronaut ice cream here on the Ice Cream Journal before, but it’s been a long time. Of course, I’m talking about freeze dried ice cream, which really does start out as real ice cream before all the moisture is sucked out in a special vacuum freezing process.
Astronaut ice cream (the standard Neapolitan flavor) was first consumed by Neil Armstrong on the Apollo 11 mission in July 1969. It’s been a dessert staple of astronauts ever since, and a popular item in air and space museum gift shops.
We’ll choose THREE comments at random from all the comments left on the blog this month to receive a few servings of your very own astronaut ice cream. Each person will receive a bar of freeze dried Neapolitan ice cream and a freeze dried ice cream sandwich. Good luck!

If you’ve got a technical question about the ice cream making process or some other inquiry about the nuances of America’s favorite treat, chances are Ernie has the answer. He might not be able to answer all questions, but he’ll try his best and some may be featured on the Ice Cream Journal.
I haven’t had this since i was kid,I love ice cream period, so this would be a nice adition! awwww memories! lol
looks like a winner to me
I love your ice cream!
cool…i’ve never tried this
This would be a great science project for my grandson to show at school when they have science day. They have to come up with hands on science projects and that would be a great learning experience for the kids to see.As a matter of fact I would like to see and taste it myself.
Look mom, no freezer space!
Will definitely save on FREEZER space!
I’ve never seen freeze dried ice cream,
it would be convenient to have ice cream
that available and not take up much room.
I remember tasting this type of ice-cream while on a field trip to a museum in Washington. It was many many years ago and yet I remember how good it tasted:) I loved ice-cream even then (in any form)
Ya’ll will love these; they sort of melt in your mouth like a maltball. The sandwich is better, but just as I do in life, with the Neopolitan, I eat the chocolate and vanilla and leave the strawberry for someone else!
This sounds interesting, I remember eating “space food sticks” when I was a kid and I loved them! You could bring this to work with you and leave it in your drawer until you’re ready to eat it!!
Awesome!!!!! Would love to try that.
OMG – I still remember my first taste of astronaut icecream – family vacation to Florida in 4th grade – visited the Kennedy Space Center. Mmmm – now I think I’ll go make myself a glass of Tang!
I’ve never had this but it sounds great! Especially for those work cravings -
I like ice cream sandwiches almost as much as moose tracks
Hmmm, freeze-dried ice cream? I’ll let someone else try it & tell me how it is!
so, TANG isn’t the only food we can thank the astronauts for. acutally, I prefer ice cream over OJ anyday.
Ice cream sandwiches are the best!!Thanks
Astronaut ice cream – Out of this World!
I love freeze dried ice cream! I remember trying it as a kid (I think you could send away for it with cereal box clippings). I occasionally have it when I go camping– cuz I can’t live without ice cream, even when camping!
Now that an interesting concept! Who would have thought!
OH WOW! Who would have thought about this process, other than NASA? I Love Ice Cream but have never tried this. Looks Good Though
I tried this when we took our kids to the space center in Fla. It is delicious. Now if they could just freeze dry a whole banana split, it would really be interesting.
What a novelty for the kids!
We have baked Alaska why not freeze dried ice cream. Sounds great!!
it’s cold in space
I hadn’t thought about this stuff in a long time. When I was younger we had the Neopolitan but I’ve never had the ice cream sandwich yet! It is really great stuff and tons of fun to eat. I don’t think my children have had it yet so, unless I win, I will need to get some!
Good Morning to all, I never thought I would see this kind of ice cream. I bet it taste good. But I bet turkey hill taste better.
I had it, and it is good. One nice thing about it, it melts in your mouth ,not on your hands.
I haven’t had this since middle school! Great memories of a very fun treat!
Oh my, I have never had freeze dried ice cream and I’d certainly LOVE to try it!
i loooooove astronaut ice cream. except when i ate it too fast and the back of my throat had no feeling and was really dry!! if i win, I promise not to eat it too fast!!
I’ve tasted the neopolitan slice at the Air Force Museum in Fairborn, Ohio, but I prefer the earthbound stuff.
sounds ok to me.would like to try it.
Out of This World – Ice Cream !
Would Love to Try.
I’ve never tried astronaut icse cream before….I’m dying to know if it really taste like ice cream

Very, very fussy about ice cream, would try but would want “earth ice cream”
Yeah Space IceCream!
“I like ice cream sandwiches almost as much as moose tracks” Alexa, I could not have said it better myself!
Astronaut ice cream? I had no idea. My kids would really get a kick out of this.
I’d love to try this E.T. celestial ice cream.
What a fun and unique idea! I’d love to try it! Thanks!
would love to try this product
It’s been many years since I had this treat. Ice cream in any form–Yummm–what could be better?
Astronaut ice cream, sounds out of this world
Would like to share these with my grandchidren. I baqby sit 2 of them 3 days a week.
Thank you
Would like to share these with my grandchidren. I baby sit 2 of them 3 days a week.
Thank you
I think I had that before at space camp!
My son is always nagging me to buy these at the camping store.
Very Interesting creation by someone, cannot wait to try it/
Out of this world!
Sounds “far out” to me!
Its been a long time since we were in D.C. to buy this treat. My daughter would buy five or six and take them to school. She loved this more than the real thing I think. She always hoped to find a way to order it so she cold have them for her lunch.
i need this
It’s been a long time since we were in D.C. The first time my daughter had it she bought five or six and took one to school with her lunch. She always hoped there was a way to buy them buy mail so she could take them with her lunch. It was fun to crumble them and add it to the real thing.
good timing. I have been to the space center a few times but do not remember seeing it. We are now at our son’s in the SpaceCoast area but will have to pass on it since we will not be going to the center. If you had this last year at this time I would have tried it at that visit to the center either before or after the lift-off ride.
ps ernie if you ever get a chance to see the lif-off it is out-of-this-world. prior to 9/11 we saw it on grounds about a mile away and you can feel it.
Sounds good to me!
I would really like to try this ice cream. Just recently toured NASA facality in Cleveland. Everything I saw was amazing. But I did see some of the can good food the astronauts eat. Very cool.
I’m in!
I’m very curious to try this ice cream. I’m sure it is nothing compared to TH.
you could say that Turkey Hill ice cream boldly goes where no ice cream has gone before.
Astronaut ice cream looks yummy. Sounds like an interesting process to get it. Never had the opportunity to buy it & try it though.
I think it’s pretty cool that even the astronauts don’t have to go without their ice cream treat!
One small scoop for man, one giant bowl for mankind!
really great on earth and in space
Saw it in the gift shop at Kennedy Space Center…but never tried it.
My grandson would LOVE this! He wants to be an astronaut when he grows up!
I never heard of this before, where have I been? I would love to try this ice cream. Linda
I’ve had the neapolitan and it was quite good! I’ll bet the sandwich is awesome!
Tried the freeze-dried ice cream years ago and loved it. Anxious to try the ice cream sandwich.
Sandy
I’ve never tried this although I wonder if it is anything like Dippin Dots. I’m sure it doesn’t hold a candle to Turkey Hill.
I did not know this was a fact. I’ll bet they are (g)astronautical treats! (:
I’d give it a try!!! Where have 40 years gone????!!!
Sounds like a delicious treat to me! I can’t wait to find these in a Turkey Hill Store.
That is so cool!
Tried these when I was young – would love to share these with my kidlets! camping ice cream!
I always wondered how it taste like? I doubt it tastes better then good old Earth ice cream!
WOULD LV TO TRY THIS. SOMETIMES I FEEL LIKE I WOULD LOVE TO GO TO THE MOON OR SEND A FEW PEOPLE THERE. JUST LIKE JACKIE GLEASON USE TO SAY “TO THE MOON ALICE”
WOW I HOPE IT IS TURKEY HILL ICECREAM
ASTRONAUT Ice Cream………That is sooooooo far out. My kids think I’m a
space shot anyway!
MMMM sounds great! Keep the good things coming Turkey Hill!
Ice Cream for the 21st Century!!!
I was born in 1969 so I would love to try this kind of ice cream! It would be fun to try a new taste! I do love Neapolitan ice cream!
Freeze dried ice cream – how lovely. I may have had some before when I was a little kid, but can’t remember.
I have never tasted this ice cream if its good enough to eat in outer space it has to be good here on Earth so this ice cream should be called out of this world ice cream
Would this mean no brain freeze?
This ice cream looks so good and so much fun. It is nice to know that even when you are in space, you can have ice cream. I would love to win!
Sounds kind of spacey.
See, Even in Space “TURKEY HILL ICE CREAM IS BEAMING DOWN TO EARTH & BACK UP TO SPACE”!
There is intelligent life down here! They eat Turkey Hill ice cream.
Wow!! I really like neapolitan and my husnand likes the ice cream sandwiches, what a nice combo prize…
Wow! If you offer something for free, people really do turn out. You got everyone’s attention with your offer of freeze-dried ice cream. Freeze-dried coffee worked out well. Can’t help being curious about this idea.
I often wondered how astronaut food would taste!
I remember the first time I tasted this stuff, it was at the Franklin Institute, not my idea of ice cream. if I can’t get the real think, then it’s not worth eating.
thank you turkey hill for being there for me.
Woo-hoo !!!!! This sounds pretty interesting and I know the kids would love taking this to school for science class. Turkey Hill, you think of the most ingenious ideas for prizes.
Wow, I’ve never seen a freeze-dried ice cream sandwich before.
I never tried the actual sandwiches but did buy the astronaut ice cream at the space center this summer at the Virginia NASA site. It tasted like actual ice-cream. Love to have a chance to try the bar!
Intriguing, but I would rather stay here on earth and eat my Turkey Hill.
We live near an air museum and the have this product there – but I have never seen the ice cream sandwich one – that sounds interesting – what a great giveaway! thanks for this chance.
Hard to believe. But I am sure the taste is nothing like the real thing. Give me a bowl of Turkey Hill anytime.
Have met several of the astronauts and it would be interesting to try some of their food. It doesn’t sound too tasty but any ice cream sandwich can’t be that bad.
Wow I have never tried freeze dried ice cream. I wonder how close to the real thing it is?
Up until just now after reading this, I had no idea any such thing even existed. Thanks for the info.
Yum
I would love to eat these in space!
It’s been 25 years since I’ve had this! I’d love to try it again!
See–astronauts are normal people, too. Go, Neil!
Like BettyG, I remember space food sticks from way back when.
The Wikipedia article on freeze dried ice cream describes how it’s made. But it also suggests that some real ice cream has been taken to the space shuttle.
Are you planning on marketing freeze-dried Turkey Hill ice cream?
I’m trying to recall if I tried this before or not. Would love to try it again!
i’d love to win this!
My boys are always ready to share the astronaut foods that they buy. We haven’t tried the ice cream; yet
Whenever our out of town visit us, we always take them to Washington,DC. While there, we make it a point to stop by the Air & Space Museum to buy them a few packs of these for their journey home. Astronaut Ice Cream is one of the first and sweetest memories I had when I came to the United States.
I’d love to try your astronaut ice cream sandwich!!!
I remember eating this when I was like 4 or 5 years old when I was on a field trip in elementary school. I just I remember how much I loved it back then!! I would love to try this again.
This is one of the best ice cream I have eaten lately.
