You don’t realize how much weird ice cream-related news there is until you start combing through the archives of the Internet for it. Not old stuff, either. I’m talking about recent weird news. As always, three of the stories below are 100 percent true and one was made up by the Turkey Hill team. Leave a comment with your guess about which is the frozen fake.
WHO’S GOT THE SPRINKLES? – Highway crews in Manchester, England are describing it as “a big mess” and ice cream lovers were tempted to stop their cars and grab a spoon when a frozen foods truck carrying more than 10,000 half gallon containers of ice cream overturned on a highway just outside the city. No one was injured in the accident, but it did send half of the truck’s frosty cargo tumbling out onto the three-lane road and bring traffic to a standstill until the melee could be cleared.
THE MIRACLE DESSERT – Researchers at New Zealand’s University of Auckland have developed an ice cream with two active dairy ingredients that combine to address the unpleasant side effects of chemotherapy. The helpful treat, called ReCharge, is available in strawberry flavor and is being tested with cancer patients in six New Zealand cities.
LOST AND FOUND – An 8-year-old Australian boy who disappeared from his bedroom in the middle of the night was found a few hours later pretty much where’d you’d expect to find a missing 8-year-old. Melbourne police picked the barefoot boy up at 3:50 am after he’d wandered into a 24-hour grocery store and began helping himself to some chocolate ice cream in the frozen treats aisle of his local grocery store. The child was reunited with his parents a short time later.
IT’S LIKE 1935 ALL OVER AGAIN! – In an effort to bring the old days back to life (and more customers through the door), a drug store in Ava, Missouri has set up an old fashioned soda fountain and has begun selling ice cream for five cents a scoop (limit three scoops per person). As expected, most of the fountain’s customers are kids from a nearby school who are anxious to put their allowance to good use.

If you’ve got a technical question about the ice cream making process or some other inquiry about the nuances of America’s favorite treat, chances are Ernie has the answer. He might not be able to answer all questions, but he’ll try his best and some may be featured on the Ice Cream Journal.
I think lost & found is the fake story, an 8 year old would know that eating ice cream in from the grocery store is not acceptable behavior.
To Bad about the Truck overturning, also the icecream probley would have melted anyway, Right////Ha/ Making me hungery today with that look, Ha////
Ice cream therapy; that’s really awesome.
Turkey Hill may not be just for tonsils anymore.
I would say LOST AND FOUND is not true.
I vote for the 1935 story. The cheap scoops would have to be a one-time offer or they couldn’t afford to stay in business.
I’m leaning towards the 1935 story not being true… Now it’s time for an internet search to see which one it really is…
LOST AND FOUND –
that ice cream sure look good. I am going out to buy some now.
The first one is not true
i’m thinking ***lost n found***isnt the true story
I hope that “Lost and Found” is the fake. I think I would move to live near a 5cent ice cream parlor! And I don’t want the one about the cancer treatment to be untrue…that would be fantastic…can they make it chocolate or coffee flavor?????
I would have to say “lost & found” is not true!
I think the 1935 story is fake. It sounds just too good to be true.
Uh, people, it says four of the stories are 100% true and one is made up. Well there are only four stories Sprinkles, Miracle, Lost, and 1935. So they all must be true or some one at Turkey Hill has miss-counted.
I think it’s the miracle dessert
I’m with Brian C. I’m like thinking: so where’s the 5th story?
The 5th story was false since it was not there. I didn’t check with SNOPES.com for the other 4 but asked Hubby. He said the overturns truck can be true as long as the scavengers got there before it melted. The miracle dessert also can be true since a side effect of chemo is nausia. Lost kid also can be true since all humans have a yen for ice cream at odd times and last the nickel a scoop is a great publicity stunt to drum up future business.
I vote for the Lost and Found too. Linda
I say The Miracle Dessert, #3 is a fake. Sounds kind of weird, but you never know!
4 true 1 fake, there are only 4 stories???? hummmm maybe the missing, non-existing story is the fake, or has there been a type-o???
Sorry about the miscount, folks! The first paragraph should have said THREE stories are true and one is false. We’ve fixed the error. Keep the guesses coming!
where is #5
Ok that explains it, Lost & Found is fake, my grandsons at 8 years old were mature enough NOT to go wondering out of the house for a stolen mid-night snack, so I’m guessing most 8 yr olds are the same.
These are really interesting pieces of information! I’d like to know more about ice cream that helps chemo patients.
In this wacky world any one of them could be true, but I’ll vote for Lost and Found.
1, 2, 3, 4,
Shouldn’t there be 5?
You need one more!
Now wait, let’s see,
You changed the count!
Only 3 true stories there should be!
Now let me guess
“Lost And Found” is false
8 years old? It should be less!
Maybe 4 or 5
Would make me think
That into ice cream he would dive!!!
I love youe ice cream!
My guess is that the story about the missing boy is not true.
#1 Manchester England is the false one.
Lost and Found is fake I don’t think if someone was lost they would go to a grocery store and eat ice cream
People! So busy counting stries! My, my. Anyway, i too guess it’s the one about the kid in the middle of the night. Loved hearing about the wrecked truck full of ice cream. Wish it happened in front of my house. Not that I want anyone to get hurt. I remember hearing (and seeing) on the news about an egg truck that tipped over. What a mess that was!
okay. So when do we find out which is the false story. I remember last time you did this I never found out.
I’m betting on Lost and Found!!
lost and found
I vote for Lost & Found.
I say lost and found
I hope “The Miracle Dessert” is true. That would be awesome. All of us probably know someone that has gone through chemo, what a blessing this would be.
My guess is #1 — the Manchester England ice cream “accident”. Sounds pretty phony to me.
I’m voting for “WHO’S GOT THE SPRINKLES?”
Number 1!
I vote for the “Lost and Found”.
The first story sounds a bit too vague to be true…
My vote is for “Who’s got the Sprinkles”.
There are so few things left in life that are still so magical and I thank the universe that ice cream is still one of them.
I’d say “1935 all over again”. Kids these days get $5 for an allowance, not a nickel.
Everyone, not just kids, would be lining up for a nickel scoop.
The lost and found story sounds phony to me. This has got to be the made-up story. If the first story is true about the overturned truck spilling out all that ice cream onto the street, how I wish I had been there with my spoon to sample the goodies!
Thank You to all our Veterans out there!
I’m guessing the Miracle Dessert!
very interesting!!
I think the 1935 story is false. Three scoops for 5 cents each??? The place would be packed…..I know I’d be there!
They all seem believable but I am not sure if #1 is true, but it is plausible. I would hope that # 2 is true, so I am thinking that # 4 is false.
It has to be Whos got the sprinkles. the area would have been closed off and this would not have been allowed. However it does make you think about Ice Cream and I am sure the boy walked miles to get some and it sounds great for chemo patients to help them through their challenges. And why not treat the kids, ICream always brings in lots of business. Also we all need to pray and think about our active soldiers and their families and ALL USA
Veterns who have sacrified for our wonderful freedoms.
I will say the Miracle Dessert is untrue. If it isn’t then the U.S. should have that shipped to every hospice center.
The highway story sounds good, but is totally false! Way to go New Zealand and hope we get that product here in the USA soon! And I hope those Australian parents put a better lock on their door. Excuse me now, while I head off to Ava for the 5 cent cones…
Think it might be the MIRACLE story. Sounds to good to be true.
I was going to “google” these stories, but I decided to just guess and my guess is “THE MIRACLE DESSERT” is not true. if it were true, we probably would have heard the news.
I vote for The Miracle Dessert!
I would have to guess the mess in Manchester England. It’s missing too much information. Something like that would certainly be in the international news and I don’t remember seeing it anywhere.
[...] the way, the answer to which story was fake from last week’s wacky ice cream news is “Whose Got the Sprinkles?” (the one about the ice cream truck accident in [...]
I believe it is the one with the sprinkles. The other 3 sound true to me.
I think it’s #2.
