MMMMM…BOOKS
Posted by: Turkey Hill Team
Reading, as they say, is fundamental. (Or FUNdamental, according to the posters you may see in many elementary schools.) Speaking of reading and fun, an elementary school principal in Plattsmouth, Nebraska wanted to reward his students for logging 13,410 minutes of reading in the Scholastic Reading Program, so he let 15 young scholars, whose names were chosen at random, turn him into a human ice cream sundae. Check out the photo below, courtesy of The Plattsmouth Journal and photographer Brent Hardin and the complete story here. Something tells me if our bosses let us turn them into human ice cream sundaes, we’d all be reading a lot more too!

If you’ve got a technical question about the ice cream making process or some other inquiry about the nuances of America’s favorite treat, chances are Ernie has the answer. He might not be able to answer all questions, but he’ll try his best and some may be featured on the Ice Cream Journal.

As a school librarian, I believe in doing anything to get students reading. I’m always glad when administration is willing to be good sports in such a great cause!
November 22nd, 2009 at 9:16 pmTRULY SWEET PERSON!
November 18th, 2009 at 3:52 amWell, I am glad that TH is not available in Nebraska! It would have been a waste of great ice cream. On the other hand, I am glad to see a principal who is willing to go all out for his students! Congratulations to him!
November 17th, 2009 at 7:04 pmPlattsmouth, Nebraska need to learn how to have fun by eating ice cream, seems like a waste of good ice cream here.
November 17th, 2009 at 3:02 pmthe kids should ate the ice cream and some read to them
November 16th, 2009 at 4:34 pmSounds like a great guy, and at the same time he had the kids reading books. This was a win-win situation and everyone had fun.
November 16th, 2009 at 3:02 pmNow I would not mind being the human ice cream sundae. The children must have had a great time!!
November 16th, 2009 at 2:22 pmI normally would not refuse an ice cream sundae, but I would make an exception in this case.
November 16th, 2009 at 1:17 pmWhat a mess thats gotta be cold for hime? ha/// Alittle much/////
November 16th, 2009 at 12:26 pmI’m sure the kids enjoyed it and I hate to be a party pooper, but in reality I don’t think it’s setting a very good example when there are so many people struggling to put food on the table these days.
November 16th, 2009 at 12:14 pmWhat a waste of ice cream. I am dire need of ice cream and I see this. I have no money to buy ice cream nor do i have a job. When I see this, I can think of ways to use the ice cream You can give it to other who don’t have any foods to eat, homeless shelters, and some schools. Or you can send me some to eat. Since I don’t have a jobs or money to buy any turkey hill ice cream. What a waste
November 16th, 2009 at 11:46 amGreat Way to reward the young readers!!
November 16th, 2009 at 10:19 amWhat a treat for him and so much fun for the kids. The great part of this story is READING!!!! If kids read the our country and world will be a much better place to live in. YES YES
November 16th, 2009 at 9:07 amWaste!
November 16th, 2009 at 1:22 amWhat a waste! Should have squirted him with whipped cream. Hope he had his mouth when they did his face.
November 16th, 2009 at 12:50 amI’m amazed how many ice cream-related stories you guys find!
November 15th, 2009 at 9:54 pmI would have given the students an ice cream sundae party…and perhaps a few whipped topping pies to throw at the princ. and v.p. (ala 3 stooges)…but to WASTE all that ice cream….that’s a crime!
November 15th, 2009 at 9:51 pmInnovative, to say the least, but how about making a long edible sundae, and have all the kids sample it. That would also make a good photo op.
November 15th, 2009 at 8:54 pmWhat a great incentive for kids to read more! Great job to all who participated in the event!
November 15th, 2009 at 6:53 pmwhat a waste of ice cream, I can’t buy any because there is no room in my freezer for anything that can not be made into a meal and these people waste something I could die for. why not use mushrooms or fish. NOT TH ICE CREAM
November 15th, 2009 at 5:34 pmGreat idea to encourage children to read. Sure it’s a waste of ice cream and created a small mess (hopefully) but the fun the children had was worth it. Maybe they had a special ice cream treat too.
November 15th, 2009 at 3:47 pmI agree that it’s a waste of ice cream! It’s a good idea to treat the kid’s for a job well done but maybe they all could have had a small sundae instead of just 15 being chosen to make a human sundae.
November 15th, 2009 at 10:38 amLove READING! Love ICE CREAM! I’m sure the kids had fun, but what a WASTE!
November 15th, 2009 at 10:32 amI sure hope the human sundae was made with Turkey Hill.
November 15th, 2009 at 9:51 amI am sure the kids would have wanted to eat the ice cream instead for a reward. But the principal did come up with a unique idea.
November 15th, 2009 at 9:09 amAs long as it gets the children to read an no one gets hurt it works for me
November 15th, 2009 at 8:44 am.
The only thing better than reading is reading while eating ice cream.
November 15th, 2009 at 7:19 amwho eats it after the mess??
November 15th, 2009 at 1:10 amWhether you agree with what he did or not, that teacher sure is a good sport. To: Turkry Hill Fan…You’re right! That does look like Simon in the background.
November 15th, 2009 at 1:09 amQuirky!
November 15th, 2009 at 12:22 amI can understand having some fun for the children for reading, but never could see anything funny about throwing food at someone. We came from a poor family and never wasted food so I guess that is why I feel that way.
November 14th, 2009 at 11:04 pmI’m afraid I wouldn’t have used ice cream. Way to good to eat! Maybe creamed soup!!!

November 14th, 2009 at 9:15 pmI think a better idea would be to let the kids have a sundae. Reading an ice cream what a treat.
November 14th, 2009 at 9:10 pmI love your ice cream!
November 14th, 2009 at 8:25 pmI have to agree with RonR F about it being a waste of ice cream, I only hope it wasn’t my favorite brand (Turkey Hill). Linda
November 14th, 2009 at 8:24 pmWhat a waste of ice cream. They should have used fake whipped cream instead.
