ATTACK OF THE SIX POUND MILKSHAKE

Legend has it there’s a place in Annapolis, Maryland called Chick & Ruth’s Deli that offers a towering six pound milkshake. If you finish the $17 behemoth, you get your photo taken and placed on the deli’s website. Many have attempted the challenge, some with a little help from a friend, but most have failed.

Pictured above is a gentleman who not only completed the milkshake in the photo, he tackled the deli’s “Man vs. Food Challenge” by also downing a one pound cheeseburger (that’s it on the table in front of him) in under an hour! Knowing that the Ice Cream Journal has some of the biggest ice cream fans in the world as its readers, we were curious to know how many of you think you could tackle Chick and Ruth’s jumbo shake. The burger, of course, is optional!

  2. Jeffrey says:

If it is ice cream (preferably Turkey Hill double churned), I think I could do it. I love ice cream and in my youth used to eat half gallons at one sitting as a snack.

  3. Bob Kessler Jr says:

I couldn’t even begin to think about drinking it let alone finish it. Milkshakes are great but there is a limit.

  4. Judi says:

Glad I wasn’t there when he burped!

  5. Linda Leffler says:

I am not a fan of milkshakes, just give me a big bowl of Turkey Hill Ice Cream instead. The burger looks good. Linda

  9. Lois Sidelnick says:

I would like to try it if there is no time limit on it, like 2 days?

  10. Andilu says:

    ew!
I am not a milkshake fan…i would much rather enjoy my ice cream frozen and in a cone or dish rather than blendy/melty…there is soooo much ice cream in a milk shake…you could have 5 ice cream cones for the caloric cost of 1 milkshake!

  11. marion says:

    Bring it on–no problem!

  12. Jane M says:

I’m lactose intolerance and the added volumne and air from the shake would do me in.

  13. Robin Ames says:

Six pounds of ANYTHING is too much! I watch Man v Food all the time and marvel that the guy doesn’t spend the bulk of his days in the ER!!

  14. Clara says:

If it were a stawberry milkshake I think I could do it.

  15. Harriet G. says:

Too much. It would not be healthy to consume that much.

  16. Jacqueline Seewald says:

No way I could down it or would even want to!

  17. Pat says:

It sure looks tempting but know I could never finish it!

  18. Deb says:

There is such a thing as “too much” and that’s it. All of that in one sitting would make me sick. Would rather have ice cream in a dish any time.

  19. Fred V says:

If it`s chocolate NO PROBLEM !!!

  20. Sarah says:

It sounds delish but I bet I couldn’t finish even 1/3 of it.

  21. Cheryl says:

Holy cow–that is one big milkshake!

  22. Russ says:

I think I oould handle half of it, but not the whole thing!

  23. BETTY says:

id be willing to try it

  24. Emilia says:

My son would like to do it but I wouldn’t let him! That could feed him, his sister, his dad, and me! Although it would be kind of fun to go there if we get to Annapolis.

  25. alicelynne says:

Oh, my stomach hurts just thinking about it!!!

  26. Mary says:

My son would be willing to try it! He’s been in Annapolis, but didn’t mention stopping there.

  27. Norma says:

I don’t want to look like the successful ones, so, no thanks.

  28. Caroline of Manalapan says:

No way I would try it even without the cheeseburger. This reminds me of the “Kitchen Sink” at Jahn’s where a group of us kids would dig in and try to finish that sundae. It would be fun to order for our grand children’s birthday with plenty of extra glasses for all to share. I would nor order plain vanilla, probably chocolate or strawberry.

  29. Marci Hooper says:

OMG! Don’t think I could handle the “brain freeze”, but, my husband says he could do it…hmmm. Wish we lived closer so I could make him prove it!

  30. Linda says:

It takes me a good month of careful dieting to lose 6 pounds. I’ll be darned, if I’d have one of those 6 pound milkshakes! I know I could drink it in one sitting, especially if it was made with TH. But, it wouldn’t be worth it. Nothing tastes as good as thin feels! I’ll just enjoy my small dish of lighter recipe TH every night & have the best of both worlds.

  31. Kathleen says:

Mmmmmmm….it looks heavenly…could you please throw some whipped cream and a cherry on top please…I’ll share…

  32. Joanne says:

I can’t believe someone mentioned Jahn’s “Kitchen Sink.” When I was in college, there was a Jahn’s on Kingsbridge Road, so me and a few of my ice-cream loving friends went there and ordered the “Kitchen Sink.” The waiter wouldn’t serve it to us; there weren’t enough of us according to him.
So now I’m at an age where I can’t imagine consuming a 6 pound shake!

  33. CAROL TRIANO says:

I would try it, but would have to share with family and friends. Too much for one person to enjoy !!

  34. Joseph says:

I want to do it!!! I love milkshakes.

  35. Dave G says:

I would love to tackle that burger, and as for the milkshake…that’s a whole lotta milkshake, but I’d have to give it a shot!

  36. Stefanie Schmidt says:

    That milkshake looks so good!

  37. icecreamaholic says:

I could tackle it, but it would win!

  38. Craig Kurtz says:

Wow, I have been to Annapolis many times and know of the place but have not visited. Milkshake looks great and would not mind the burger either.
Maybe this man is a Navy Academy cadet and needs lots of energy!!!

  39. Mary Gropp says:

Chick and Ruth’s ROCKS and that milkshake can be triumphed! Nix the burger though. On a hot summer’s day, where the temp in Annapolis is in the high 90′s, and the humidity is high, that milkshake takes on a whole new appeal!

  40. brenda says:

That is a lot of milkshake to drink. If I was real hungry…I could do it.
Was the mikshake made with Turkey Hill Ice cream…I hope so

  41. Jim in SOMD says:

I think that I would love to try and drink it all down, but with two preteen boys, I am pretty sure that it would have to be a family affair. However, if I ever find myself alone in Annapolis, I might just have to seek out the deli.

  42. Susan says:

No way! There is only so much room in my stomach. It looks yummy though! And think of the calories! Yikes!

  43. lORRAINE says:

ALL I CAN THINK ABOUT IS ALL THOSE CALORIES, ON SOMEONE, BUT IT DOES LOOK GOOD AND FILLING FOR A GUY TO EAT. HA..

  44. Karen says:

No thanks. I also prefer ice cream over milkshakes.

  45. leecarr says:

as long as the burger is optional, I would love a shake like this one, slow and smooth.

  46. Tricia Ostermann says:

I am soooo planning a trip to Annapolis! I think I could conquer that shake!

  47. gianna says:

in less than one hour?!!! Nope couldn’t do it!

  48. Lauren says:

I’d try but would almost certainly need some help, unless I hadn’t eaten for an entire day or something.

  49. Ann says:

I love milk shakes, but I think I would need about 6 of my closest friends to help me finish it!

  50. Jan Cis says:

I love milkshakes but the most I have ever had at one sitting is 3. Two were my own, and then I finished off the kids. I know I couldn’t do it in an hour, but boy it would be fun to try. I will keep this place in mind the next time I take a trip South.

  51. Marcy says:

    Not for me!

  52. lyndsay says:

that guy looks like he plays hockey or football or something so he probably has an awesome metabolism… AMAZING that he could drink that thing… !

  53. Kelly D says:

hooly mooly, give me that shake, chocolate

  54. mary ann herrmann says:

    …how cool are these bowls.

resemble my dog’s winter coat – seriously.

  55. bill says:

I might not be able to do it, but I sure would like to try.

  56. Jenny says:

It is Chick and Ruth’s DELLY

  57. Ken says:

    Not for me!

  58. Mitzi Hunter says:

I could probably do it in chocolate! LOL! I would have to skip bfast and lunch though.

  59. Denise says:

I don’t think I could finish it. But I would sure have fun trying.

  60. Patti Kanczes says:

The shake yes!, the burger no! :)

  61. Dan Avery says:

Sounds like I need to take a road trip to Annapolis!

  62. peg says:

I would give it a good try. Maybe in an hour I could finish it and with a little help from my boys

  63. Pam F says:

I absolutely LOVE milkshakes….I would be up for the challenge at least…not sure of the outcome….

  64. Bobby K says:

It can’t be any harder than swallowing the gallon of Gatorade before getting a colonoscopy

  65. Bill S. says:

Yes it’s true! Was in Anapolis over the holidays, and stopped in to Chick & Ruth’s for lunch. THE PLACE WAS PACKED! I did not try the milkshake or the burger, but I saw one being served to someone. If you are near Annapolis, you have to check this place out. Every morning they do they pledge to the flag.

  66. Jennifer H says:

    Zowie that is BIG!

  67. Steven Mueller says:

Woozers that’s a big shake. Can I get some fries with that ISH!?!?! Holla atchaboi! Can I geeeet get? Can I haaaave it? Yours truly, lil stevezy.

  68. alex says:

I tried the milk shake last week! It was probably not a good idea to get the pent butter cup shake like I did because when I got to the very bottom I could not finish all the peanut butter in time. It was a great challenge though!

  69. Alex S. says:

I am the only one who has finished not 1 but 2 of those shakes in less than 30 mins, you don’t believe me? check the link and look for the only guy who is posing with 2 empty glasses for the gallery! http://www.chickandruths.com/ate.html
