Spring is upon us, which means two things: warmer weather and the start of the Turkey Hill Ultimate Flavor Tournament.
Now in its third year, the Ultimate Flavor Tournament is a six-week showdown to determine the best Turkey Hill ice cream flavor of them all, and it’s all based on your votes. In 2008, Vanilla Bean emerged as the victor. Last year, Vanilla Bean made it to the final round, but was upset by Light Recipe Moose Tracks, which took the title and claimed a victory for the entire Light Recipe line-up.
Here’s how it works: Each week will feature a different series of one-on-one match-ups, all voted on by you (see the polls on the right). We’ll start with 32 flavors (the “Thrilling 32”), or 16 head-to-head contests, with the winner of each contest advancing to the next round, until only two flavors remain standing. The winner of that final showdown will be declared the Ultimate Flavor Tournament champion.
Of course, there will also be prizes. At the end of the tournament, we’ll give away a one-year supply of Turkey Hill ice cream to one commenter chosen at random from all the comments left during the tournament. We’ll also choose 10 of our favorite comments during the tournament to receive some free ice cream.
As always, Turkey Hill’s “Einstein of Ice Cream,” Ernie Pinckney, will offer predictions and expert commentary on each of the upcoming week’s match-ups, starting with the Thrilling 32 of round one below. Check back each Monday for the new match-ups, and may the best flavor win!
THE COCO-NUTTY MATCH-UP – Light Recipe Coconut Almond Fudge vs. Dynamic Duos CocoNutz!
“Coconut is an unpredictable flavor, so there’s no telling what might happen in this match-up, but based on Light Recipe’s showing in last year’s contest, I have to give a slight edge to Coconut Almond Fudge.”
THE ONE-WORD NAME MATCH-UP – Neapolitan vs. Coffee (All Natural)
“Coffee is one thing I can’t do without in the morning, but I’m not sure if it packs the same punch here against an all time classic like Neapolitan.”
THE PEANUT BUTTER LOVERS MATCH-UP – Peanut Butter Ripple vs. Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup
“One thing I’ve learned during my ice cream making career is that peanut butter lovers are a very vocal bunch. I expect this to be a heated showdown and too close to call.”
THE TROPICAL FLAVORS MATCH-UP – Mango Duetto vs. Banana Split
“Ahh, the tropics. Many of us wish we were there right now, but we’ll settle for a taste of the tropics instead. I’m calling this race in favor of Mango Duetto, but that’s just a hunch.”
THE COOKIES MATCH-UP – Cookies ‘n Cream vs. Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough
“Wow, this is an impressive first round match-up. Both of these flavors are strong enough to make it into the final eight, but one of them will be eliminated in the first week. I’m just going to sit back with a bowl of each and let the votes decide this one!”
THE BASEBALL MATCH-UP – Phillies Graham Slam vs. Yankees Pinstripe Brownie Blast
“I’m very interested in seeing the results of this showdown. It really comes down to which team’s fans can get to the Ice Cream Journal and vote!”
THE NOT-QUITE-ICE-CREAM FROZEN YOGURT MATCH-UP – Honey Vanilla Granola Frozen Yogurt vs. Chocolate Marshmallow Frozen Yogurt
“Frozen yogurt is often forgotten in the frozen dessert battle because it’s not technically an ice cream, but I’m a big fan, so I definitely think it deserves a spot in this tournament. I’m predicting a come-from-behind win by Honey Vanilla Granola here.”
THE DUETTO MATCH-UP – Cherry Duetto vs. Root Beer Duetto
“I think this is the year for Duetto to make it far in this tournament. I don’t think it can win the whole thing, but it can be a contender. Look for Root Beer to eek out a win here.”
THE PINT-SIZED STUFF’D MATCH-UP – Tastykake Chocolate Cupcake vs. South of the Border
“Both of these flavors are great, but this looks like an easy win for Tastykake Chocolate Cupcake. But don’t take my word for it… register a vote and see what happens!”
THE LIGHT RECIPE MATCH-UP – Light Recipe Extreme Cookies ‘n Cream vs. Light Recipe Strawberry Cheesecake
“I know, there’s a Cookies ‘n Cream flavor in the Cookies Match-up, but this is EXTREME Cookies ‘n Cream, which means it’s made with chocolate ice cream and packs a little extra punch than its vanilla-based cousin. Everyone knows I’m an Extreme Cookies ‘n Cream fanatic, so it’s no surprise who I’m picking to win this one.”
THE CREAM MATCH-UP – Strawberries ‘n Cream vs. Orange Cream Swirl
“Gotta go with Orange Cream Swirl here, but that’s just a personal preference. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Strawberries ‘n Cream win, though. Decisions, decisions!”
THE FRUITY MATCH-UP – All Natural Cherry Vanilla vs. Black Raspberry
“People forget that fruit was one of the first inclusions added to the earliest ice cream recipes, which is what makes this match-up one of the most underrated in the bunch. I expect both flavors to fight it out to the very end, with Cherry Vanilla taking this one by a stem.”
THE HOLIDAY FLAVORS MATCH-UP – Egg Nog vs. Ginger Snap
“Ginger Snap is a relatively new holiday flavor in the Turkey Hill line-up, but people really seem to enjoy it. Still, nothing says yuletide cheer like egg nog, which is why I think this flavor is going to skate by with an easy victory.”
THE LIMITED EDITION PARTNERSHIPS MATCH-UP – Gertrude Hawk Box of Chocolates (January) vs. YORK Peppermint Pattie (August)
“I know, I know. YORK Peppermint Pattie is a brand new flavor and no one has even tried it yet since it won’t be out till August, but I think the candy’s reputation speaks volumes for the power of this flavor. Gertrude Hawk also packs a punch, though, which makes the winner of this match-up hard to predict.”
THE FLAVORS WITH TWO WORDS THAT BOTH START WITH “R” MATCH-UP – Rum Raisin vs. Rocky Road
“Rum Raisin used to be a holiday flavor, but it was so popular that we started making it year-round. Can its popularity help it get past Rocky Road? Maybe, but I’m guessing Rocky Road will win this one.”
THE MINTY MATCH-UP – Choco Mint Chip vs. Light Recipe Skinny Minty
“This one is truly a coin toss. I’ve looked at this match-up from every possible angle and I still can’t come up with a winner. I’ve even eaten bowls of both flavors and I still have no idea. Maybe I should go back for another taste of each.”

Are you kidding me, Rum Raisin shouldn’t even be mentioned in the same sentence as Rocky Road, much less pitted against it in a head to head match-up. I almost pity poor Rum Raisin, but not enough to give it my vote.

Gertrude Hawks Box of Chocolate would be number one for my taste buds. Can’t get enough of it. Everytime I go shopping & find this flavor, I buy whatever amount I find, because I know it’s a limited edition. Sounds like I’m greedy but if you tasted it you would understand my obsession.
I’ve always loved vanilla peanut butter AND chocolate peanut butter, eating them alternately, so they both are #1 with me. Unfortunately the store that stocked them is closing this Saturday and Walmart dictates (as with everything else they sell) the 5 varieties of Turkey Hill they keep in stock. At this rate I wonder how many flavors T.H. will have in 10 years.

I like a lot of the flavors you have in your polls. Another pair that I wish had made it, in the frozen yogurt category, are Graham Canyon and the new Peanut Butter Pie. Those of us, who are lactose intolerant, feel left out. We like treats as much as anyone else. But have fewer choices, due to food allergies. I’m glad that plain vanilla didn’t make the cut this year.
The “peanut butter” in peanut butter ripple is always harder than the Ice cream, which takes away from the flavor merge. Work that out and you might have a new winner.

I love the chocolate peanut butter cup and chocolate covered pretzel. My absolute favorite was the plain vanilla I used to get fresh out of the machines many years ago when my dad was a Turkey Hill milkman. That was THE BEST ice cream ever. I even took my 1st grade class there for a tour of the dairy and ice cream samples. Things were so different in 1962

While Neapolitan has a fine tradition, it makes me snooze in the versatility department. Yes, you can throw some flavored sauces and a banana on it and pretend you have a poor man’s banana split, but often the flavor that seems wonderful with one of the stripes, say peanuts, has a certain ‘yuck’ factor with another, say the strawberry. Now Coffee has a mystique all its own, yet melds tantalizingly with a huge variety of flavorful add ons. Think about every dessert coffee flavor you have every had in a fine restaurant, in an exotic locale, and you can make it happen in a ‘chillier’ and more refreshing way with coffee ice cream. The old standby of hot fudge-a soda shop favorite with a ‘Happy Days’ diner thrown in. Crave a candy bar-add toffee chunks, or peanuts. Feeling European tonight? Grab some dulce de leche and go Spanish, or some cold Irish cream and make yourself one heck of a milkshake with a ‘punch’. Want tropical? Sweetened coconut milk makes a cooling tropical smoothie. The list goes on. But, sometimes, just old school will do-a scoop of plain, but never boring, always comforting-coffee!
Without a doubt the best Mint Chocolate Chip ice cream on the market is the Turkey Hill version! The shredded chocolate is awesome and the mint flavor is second to none. This should be this year’s best flavor winner!
i think it’s fun “putting ice cream flavors up against each other”.some of them you really have to think about before you can answer which one you like better.

My hardest decision was between cherry vanilla and black raspberry. These are two of my very favoritest flavors ever. A couple of flavors I have never tried so I just went with the one I thought would be tastiest.

I loved participating…finally, a voting experience that made me smile. I love, love, love Turkey Hill ice cream, its flavor and creaminess tops all others. My all time favorite isn’t in the running this year (Moose Tracks, lite recipe) because it won last year. So now I have to go out and try new flavors…touch job, but I’m game.

I love Turkey Hill Light Recipe Snyder’s Chocolate Pretzel! It is awesome. I have all my coworkers addicted to it. If you haven’t tried it you should. It is amazing and good for you.

Turkey Hill Ice Cream is our sweetness after each dinner. We enjoy trying the new flavors and mixing them with our old favorites.
I have never seen Turkey Hill’s Rum Raisin on the shelf, but it is my all-time favorite (next to my current favorite Moose Tracks).

Cherry Duetto needs to get the proper respect.
Why no chocolate marshmallow (standard ice cream, not the yogurt which can’t compare)? This is clearly the best and most underrated flavor. I guess it could use better PR. In its place, I’ll continue to vote for the 2nd best Turkey Hill flavor, Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup. Actually, it looks like most of my favorites are out of this group. Those would also include Black Cherry, Party Cake, Mexican Fried Ice Cream, and plain old Dutch Chocolate. Oh well, maybe they’ll have a better season next year.
Coconut almond fudge sounds fantastic, but I’ve never seen it on the shelves…I’ll be hoping Coffee can go all the way.

turkey hill whats not to like they offer so many flavors sometimes I just stand there and stare so hard I have to laugh because you feel one kind is not enough maybe 2 at least hard decision when it comes to flavors and varities love so many of them.
Yay for another tournament and lots more reasons to wash off the old ice cream scoop. My bet’s on Peanut Butter Ripple with its creamy vanilla base and chocolaty-peanut buttery goodness all mixed in. Still that won’t stop me from trying the others too!
Hopefully a Graham Slam victory can make up for a World Series Loss.

In case you haven’t already tried the light recipe coconut almond fudge, you don’t know what you are missing. It is absolutely delicious. Tin roof sundae was always my favorite in the past, but I think this new flavor wins out from now on. If you love Almond Joy candy bars, you’ll love this new flavor. And it has fifty percent fewer calories. Can’t beat that! I hope it remains on the market.
I haven’t started the selection process yet but this first round is always very time consuming. I love to read about each and every flavor (the ones I’ve never tries of course) and go from there. I must admit reading the descriptions definately puts me in the mood for ice cream (which isn’t too hard to do in the first place).
I was in a store with my husband a few weeks ago and two of the clerks were talking about lunch. One of them mentioned ice cream and the other one said “I don’t like ice cream”. I nearly fainted. I can’t get his comment out of my head. How in the world can someone not like ice cream? I literally can’t go a day without it.
There were some tough choices to make but, I did it. With the warmer weather this week, the idea of having ice cream is more inviting. But, Turkey Hill ice cream is good any time of the year.

Oh my–the discovery of Turkey Hill Ice Cream at my local Kroger store a couple of years ago made me totally change my mind about “grocery store” ice cream! I used to think you could only get really good ice cream if you went to an ice cream shop! No I am completely addicted, and try something new every time. My favorites so far have been the Lemon Pie and Cookies and Cream, but honestly I have liked every flavor I have tried.

Hands down, Phillies Graham Slam. It is the BEST!! I find myself looking in every store even after the season ends to find the last few cartons hidden in the back of the freezer. And still as good as eating it at Citizen’s Bank Park in the summertime!

By far the BEST ice cream flavor that is my favorite and should win is Phillies Graham Slam!!!! You just can’t beat it! My best friend and I enjoy this flavor all the time!! It was the best ice cream flavor made!! Good luck to all the other flavors though!

Black Raspberry is an underappreciated flavor! I urge you all to try it. It pairs especially well with all things chocolate: brownies, fudge sauce, etc., but it’s also beautiful with other fruit flavors, like Mango Duetto.
At Christmas I made an ice cream cake with white cake and ginger snap ice cream. It was a hit.

Ok,so sometimes I might feel guilty about eating too much ice cream but now I also feel guilty about having to choose between some of them. However, if you could mix up a coffee/coconut/chocolate combo I would gladly stuff the ballot box!
It’s no surprise that the biggest landslide of the first-round is the Rocky Road’s trouncing of Rum Raisin by a 79/21 margin. After all, Rocky Road is a universal favorite and always the top choice of my poker buddies when they my fridge (which has 4-6 flavors stocked at all times). What is surprising is that one of my personal favorites, Skinny Minty, is losing badly. I guess that just leaves more for me — yum, yum!
I can’t rant and rave enough about Extreme Cookies ‘n’ Creme! It’s so good it almost makes me angry. I love it love it love it! Unfortunately I love it so much that I had to give it up for Lent in order to spend more time with Jesus and less time eating ice cream. But come Easter, I’ll be back!!!

I’m in love with the Limited Edition Gertrude Hawk Box of Chocolates ice cream. I had some last year and I’ve been hooked since. It’s just the right combination of flavors and you’d think from the name and description it would be too much chocolate, but it isn’t. It’s just the perfect blend of everything. I’m so obsessed with it in fact that I looked in 5-6 stores for it this year and even had people looking for me also until I found some. I don’t care if it’s on sale or not, I scoop it up when I see it because it’s so good!

I absolutely love Turkey Hill orange swirl ice cream. Try this recipe for the most refreshing smoothie you’ve EVER tasted:
1 cup of this delicious ice cream in a blender with 1/4 cup orange juice, 2 tablespoons of plain or vanilla yogurt, 3 or 4 strawberries, and a bit of grated ginger.
