ULTIMATE FLAVOR TOURNAMENT ROUND ONE: THE SWEET 16

The first round is in the books after more than 48,000 votes were cast in the 16 match-ups. That’s right, 48 THOUSAND. That’s a lot of votes.

The 16 flavors that advanced to round two are facing off in the new polls on the right and it looks like there will be more than few close races this week. Last week, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough beat Cookies ‘n Cream by a narrow 51 percent to 49 percent margin in the closest contest of the week. Can “The Dough” win again in round two?

Below are this week’s match-ups, along with Ernie’s predictions and analysis. In last week’s predictions, Ernie correctly guessed seven of the 11 contests that he predicted a winner for. This week, he’s picking a winner in all eight contests and he’s boasting that he’ll correctly pick the winner in all eight!

MATCH-UP #1 – Light Recipe Coconut Almond Fudge vs. Neapolitan

Okay, maybe I shouldn’t have been so confident in my claim that I’ll correctly guess all eight winners this week, because this match-up is a tough one to call. A classic like Neapolitan (which is really three flavors in one) against a newcomer like Coconut Almond Fudge? I’m going with the old timer and saying Neapolitan will win this one!

MATCH-UP #2 – Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup vs. Banana Split

This one’s easy. Banana Split is going to win in a landslide. Just kidding. I love Banana Split, but Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup is probably the odds-on favorite to win the whole tournament, so it should claim an easy victory here.

MATCH-UP #3 – Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough vs. Yankees Pinstripe Brownie Blast

It’s not easy to beat the Yankees, but in the world of ice cream, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough has a powerful line-up. After all, it’s got cookie dough batting clean-up, and that’s a tough ingredient to overcome. I’m guessing The Dough will out homer the Yankees to claim a second round win.

MATCH-UP #4 – Chocolate Marshmallow Frozen Yogurt vs. Root Beer Duetto

We’ve got two non-traditional flavors facing off here and another tough match-up to predict. Still, I’m going with Chocolate Marshmallow Frozen Yogurt here in a very narrow win.

MATCH-UP #5 – Tastykake Chocolate Cupcake vs. Light Recipe Strawberry Cheesecake

This match-ups looks like it would be close, and it very well might be, but based on my expert knowledge of how passionate people are for chocolate, I’m going to venture an easy guess and call this contest in favor of Tastykake Chocolate Cupcake.

MATCH-UP #6 – Orange Cream Swirl vs. Black Raspberry

There are very few flavors more nostalgic than Orange Cream Swirl. The combination of the two flavors gave rise to orange cream soda and, of course, the iconic summer treat which combines vanilla ice cream with an orange exterior. (I’m not allowed to say the actual name, but it rhymes with “creamsicle.”). Anyhow, long story short, I’m picking the very dreamy Orange Cream Swirl to win here.

MATCH-UP #7 – Egg Nog vs. YORK Peppermint Pattie

YORK Peppermint Pattie’s win in round one was shocking because it’s a Limited Edition flavor that hasn’t even been released yet! That’s right, it won despite anyone ever having tasted it. That’s impressive, which is why I think it’ll beat our holiday favorite in this round.

MATCH-UP #8 – Rocky Road vs. Choco Mint Chip

Rocky Road put the meltdown on Rum Raisin in round one by a margin of 79 percent to 21 percent. It was the easiest win of the week and it spells another win for Rocky Road in round two.

Turkey Hill Choco Mint Chip is my favorite and is the only mint chip I’ve found (other than that multiple flavors brand) since my childhood that has shaved chocolate instead of “chips” or chucks. 94. David Lintz says:

It has been a rocky road for Rocky Road, but I think she is about to finally get her respect.

  95. David Lintz says:

Why would anybody ruin their ice cream by putting it in a cone? I would rather eat my ice cream off the floor than out of a cone.

  96. leecarr says:

I see that some of my favorites did not make the cut, but I will continue to eat them. there are still a few here that I enjoy so all you orange swirl lovers get out and vote early and often.

  101. Ann says:

I am glad that I don’t have such a hard decision when I go to buy my ice cream! Some of these are tough choices, Orage Swirl and Black Rasberry are two of my favoirites, how do I chose just one?

Gee, my coffee didn’t even make it to the second round. Hope I do better on my bball brackets.

  105. Karen says:

Some of the choices are so easy for me while other are really difficult. I think we all need samples of every flavor so we can make a more informed choice. What does the turkey hill team think of this option? How about a sampling type product with different comparents for each ice cream and new one after each round. Too expensive I’m sure but a girl can dream can’t she.

  106. Jennifer Barr says:

    voted ;)

  107. Tom O. says:

Yes, I must agree with what someone said earlier. When putting Black Raspberry up against Orange Swirl, this was diffently a very tough choice. Was this a fair choice? Only the tourament voters will tell. And I cannot find Orange Swirl now in the grocery store, so go figure. Well we will all see next week as we make our choices again! Until then, Happy Ice Cream dreams!

But I can get Turkey hills Chocolate Peanut Butter where I live and it has always been my favorite Icecream. I would LOVE to try the tastekake As I think that would become my family’s favorite. Because we have eaten cake and icecream together for years but think I am going to have to vote for Chocolate Peanutbutter because I KNOW thatis good.

  114. Charity says:
