The first round is in the books after more than 48,000 votes were cast in the 16 match-ups. That’s right, 48 THOUSAND. That’s a lot of votes.
The 16 flavors that advanced to round two are facing off in the new polls on the right and it looks like there will be more than few close races this week. Last week, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough beat Cookies ‘n Cream by a narrow 51 percent to 49 percent margin in the closest contest of the week. Can “The Dough” win again in round two?
Below are this week’s match-ups, along with Ernie’s predictions and analysis. In last week’s predictions, Ernie correctly guessed seven of the 11 contests that he predicted a winner for. This week, he’s picking a winner in all eight contests and he’s boasting that he’ll correctly pick the winner in all eight!
MATCH-UP #1 – Light Recipe Coconut Almond Fudge vs. Neapolitan
Okay, maybe I shouldn’t have been so confident in my claim that I’ll correctly guess all eight winners this week, because this match-up is a tough one to call. A classic like Neapolitan (which is really three flavors in one) against a newcomer like Coconut Almond Fudge? I’m going with the old timer and saying Neapolitan will win this one!
MATCH-UP #2 – Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup vs. Banana Split
This one’s easy. Banana Split is going to win in a landslide. Just kidding. I love Banana Split, but Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup is probably the odds-on favorite to win the whole tournament, so it should claim an easy victory here.
MATCH-UP #3 – Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough vs. Yankees Pinstripe Brownie Blast
It’s not easy to beat the Yankees, but in the world of ice cream, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough has a powerful line-up. After all, it’s got cookie dough batting clean-up, and that’s a tough ingredient to overcome. I’m guessing The Dough will out homer the Yankees to claim a second round win.
MATCH-UP #4 – Chocolate Marshmallow Frozen Yogurt vs. Root Beer Duetto
We’ve got two non-traditional flavors facing off here and another tough match-up to predict. Still, I’m going with Chocolate Marshmallow Frozen Yogurt here in a very narrow win.
MATCH-UP #5 – Tastykake Chocolate Cupcake vs. Light Recipe Strawberry Cheesecake
This match-ups looks like it would be close, and it very well might be, but based on my expert knowledge of how passionate people are for chocolate, I’m going to venture an easy guess and call this contest in favor of Tastykake Chocolate Cupcake.
MATCH-UP #6 – Orange Cream Swirl vs. Black Raspberry
There are very few flavors more nostalgic than Orange Cream Swirl. The combination of the two flavors gave rise to orange cream soda and, of course, the iconic summer treat which combines vanilla ice cream with an orange exterior. (I’m not allowed to say the actual name, but it rhymes with “creamsicle.”). Anyhow, long story short, I’m picking the very dreamy Orange Cream Swirl to win here.
MATCH-UP #7 – Egg Nog vs. YORK Peppermint Pattie
YORK Peppermint Pattie’s win in round one was shocking because it’s a Limited Edition flavor that hasn’t even been released yet! That’s right, it won despite anyone ever having tasted it. That’s impressive, which is why I think it’ll beat our holiday favorite in this round.
MATCH-UP #8 – Rocky Road vs. Choco Mint Chip
Rocky Road put the meltdown on Rum Raisin in round one by a margin of 79 percent to 21 percent. It was the easiest win of the week and it spells another win for Rocky Road in round two.

If you’ve got a technical question about the ice cream making process or some other inquiry about the nuances of America’s favorite treat, chances are Ernie has the answer. He might not be able to answer all questions, but he’ll try his best and some may be featured on the Ice Cream Journal.
Ernie, I agree Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup is probably the odds-on favorite to win the whole tournament…and rightly so!
48000? That’s a lot of votes! Time to get mine in again
I agree Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup
What? No peppermint ice cream in the running??
Now I reeeeeally want some Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup! I have to make a Turkey Hill run!
Mine is still up top Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup..yum yum
Orange cream swirl always reminds me of when i was a kid and the ice cream truck would cause commotion in our neighborhood LOL…..only difference is, TH Orange Cream Swirl is much tastier!
Out of all of these choices I will take Root Beer Duetto – thank you!
Get rid of the Coconut in Coconut Almond Fudge and you may just have a winner.
taking this poll made me hungry.
Orange Cream Swirl.Reminds me very much of my childhood and Creamsciles!!!
Three of my favorites are still in the running! Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup, Light Strawberry Cheesecake, and Root Beer Duetto– although the cheesecake is struggling in the polls so far. Eek!
Yummy – I dream ice cream flavors when I get the e-mails.
Black Raspsberry is the #1 for my vote.
ernie, your predictions are getting better! all this ice cream talk has certainly put me in the mood for something chocolate, with swirls of caramel and/or marshmallow.
choc peanut butter cup
I love your ice cream!
Banana Split is my favorite. We love that flavor when I make an ice cream cake.
For those of us watching fat content, you should have included more double churn flavors.
I’m glad to see my choices from the first round actually made it to the second round. This is going to be a delicious contest to win, for somebody (me LOL)
this is fun-keep it interesting
Turkey Hill Choco Mint Chip is my favorite and is the only mint chip I’ve found (other than that multiple flavors brand) since my childhood that has shaved chocolate instead of “chips” or chucks. Makes the chocolate more uniform. Plus anything MINT is a go for me. Can’t wait to try the York Peppermint Pattie.
Heck, they are all winners!
This is really fun trying to see if my picks match up with the majority. I see that my all time favorite is still in the running. I love the chocolate peanut butter cup.
I can’t wait to find some of these flavors in my grocery store! Tastykake? Yum!
coconut and vanilla are the best flavors–wish we had the Coconut Almond Fudge in the Detroit area to try !!!! love the Coconut Cream Pie the most !!!!! thanks
And once again, anything chocolate gets my vote!
WISH I HAD SOME BANANA SPLIT IN MY FREEZER NOW. THINK I WILL BUY IT WHEN I SHOP THIS WEEK.
I don’t think my store has ever had Light Strawberry Cheesecake or Coconut Almond Fudge. They sound wonderful. ML
I had a really hard time picking between the Chocolate Marshmallow Yougurt and Root Beer Dueto – but the Yogurt won.
surprised at some of the winners
Rocky Road rules. The problem is there are too many favorites to pick even one out of two!
I cannot believe that cookie dough won over cookies & cream. so sad.
I AGREE CHOCOLATE PEANUT BUTTER CUP SHOULD WIN IT ALL.
Thanks for letting me vote for my favorites. I agree with everyone else that all the flavors are winners. Anything chocolate gets my vote for sure!
Thanks for letting us vote on our favorites. I agree with the others that any flavor of Turkey Hill Ice Cream is a winner. I love anything chocolate so that will always get my first vote. Yummy!
I assume you have safeguards so folks cannot vote twice!!
Is there anything better in life to be voting on than ice cream? It’s enough to make me run to the store right now! Absolutely love my choc chip cookie dough frozen yogurt. MMMMMMM in a healthy version. Fantastic!
Wow! I can’t believe that some of these results are so close.Good luck to all and may the best flavor WIN!!!
Root Beer Dueto, now that is so good and
has my final vote. A lot of voters because Turkey Hill Ice Cream is G000000000000D
EXTREME COOKIES & CREAM IS STILL THE BEST ICE CREAM OF ALL TIME!!!
Sorry to see that Box of Chocolates didn’t make the cut…How much did it lose by?
Aww, come on! Some of these are impossible to choose from. I am pretty good at picking the underdogs though. I just don’t love the peanut butter…sorry. But I do love just about everything else! This contest makes me nervous though because I am always afraid my favorites won’t win and Turkey Hill will stop making them…please say it isn’t so!!!
Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup is way ahead of Banana Split in this round. I too think it can go all the way to No. 1. MMMMMMM Chocolate and Peanut Butter, you can’t go wrong with that.
Go Cookie Dough!!!
Ok this is really a challenge because they are all so tempting and good. Hard to choose…Marilyn
I’ve been enjoying “Orange Cream Swirl”, it reminds me of the creamsicles, that I had as a kid..wonderful memories of the icecream truck that use to come through the neighborhood.
No Moose Tracks. My guesses were not close at all. I still go for the light recipes, and of course, peanut butter anything. cooky dough? NO
Wow, this round it’s either neck and neck or a total blow out!
Orange Cream Swirl is one of the flavors I’ve watched for but never seen up here in NY. Judging by the comments, guess I’d better pack a cooler and do some investigating on my next road trip to State College. Wish me luck!
Guess I will have to try Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup sounds like it is the odds on favorite!
Another fan of Chocolate Peanut Butter cup!
Right now I could go for a light Vanilla Bean!
Chocolate PB cup still in the running!!!! My all time favorite!!!
hahaha…this is so fun!
it was a hard decision this time.
Love that Turkey Hill!! Great flavors!
Seems like a lot of my favorites didn’t make it. But, I’m still voting.
I had only voted on flavors that I have actually tasted!! After York Peppermint -not even released yet-beating out the my most delicious Egg Nog..oh oh oh… PLEASE vote EGG NOG It is soooooo good…
I seem to be doing better with my picks today than before. Anything with chocolate is gaining ground. I can understand that, as chocolate is my favorite, too.
I love playing this game but I really don’t care who wins, I LOVE THEM ALL….
Well, my current favorite is not on the list which is German Chocolate Cake. I do think the Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup is quite good though.
Turkey Hill ‘s vanilla is worlds best in the land, you can top it with evrty thing you desire
great i love to see that we all love ice cream turkry hill
This is the sweetest web site ever!!!!
No sugar added Vanilla Bean is soooo good that even people that can have the sugar love it!!!!
The Turkey Hill Ice cream cake it the Best! I just had some for my birthday! MM MMM Good!

I would like to see gooey marshmallow mixed with caramel and strawberries in french vanilla ice cream!
Voted – now I’m hungry for ice cream!
I like ice cream!!!
Ice cream is generally all good.
Root beer duetto and Tastykake chocolate all the way to the final four!
So many choices!
Root Beer flavor…Haven’t had that one yet but sounds good!
YAY bring it on!!!
Wow with several favorites up against each other it’s a tough call. But since a few will be knocked out, next round should be easier.
[...] Ice Cream Journal » ULTIMATE FLAVOR TOURNAMENT ROUND ONE: THE SWEET 16 [...]
It looks like some of my favorites made the sweet 16. Now the choices become more difficult – some of my favorites vying against each other. But with all of these great flavors there really isn’t a loser. They are all winners under the Turkey Hill label!!
I voted for my favorites.
It’s a shame Choco Mint Chip has to go up against Rocky Road.
I think Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup will
probably win the tournament..I HOPE…
Peanut Butter Cup is number one!
Peppermint ice cream ..if you like the candy then you will love the ice cream. I can’t waite for it to be in the store. I will buy at least (4.)I know it would win….
Peppermint Turkey Hill would be great!!!!!!!!
I am glad to see my Peppermint Pattie is still in the running, now to get choco mint chip a lil further in the polls. I am ready to eat some TH ice cream for my in between snack. Love your site
This tournament is a lot more fun than March Madness!
I just wish I could get free samples of the sweet 16.
I can see peanut butter cup winning the whole thing…..YUMMY!
I agree with Jane M. Forget March Madness give me the Ultimate Flavor Tournament.
Wow – these are some tough match-ups. I’m so excited that YORK Peppermint Pattie is still in the running! We are really looking forward to trying it in August!
I don’t know if everyone loves peanut butter as much as I do because that would be my pick. Otherwise I’d say the winner will be cookie dough or rocky road.
It has been a rocky road for Rocky Road, but I think she is about to finally get her respect.
Why would anybody ruin their ice cream by putting it in a cone? I would rather eat my ice cream off the floor than out of a cone.
I see that some of my favorites did not make the cut, but I will continue to eat them. there are still a few here that I enjoy so all you orange swirl lovers get out and vote early and often.
Wow!!! So many votes!!!!!
In Round one, not all of my picks advanced and right now, I have picked some of the leaders and some of my picks are currently in second place in their match-up.
I’m for the Tastykake Chocolate Cupcake
I wish Orange Cream Swirl wasn’t up against Black Raspberry. I taxed my brain so much on that decision that I think I deserve an ice cream reward! I’m off to the freezer.
I am glad that I don’t have such a hard decision when I go to buy my ice cream! Some of these are tough choices, Orage Swirl and Black Rasberry are two of my favoirites, how do I chose just one?
I knew Cookies n cream and chocolate chip cookie dough was going to be close. Love’em both.
I love Turkey Hill Ice Cream but some of these choices are tough. Both Tastykake Chocolate Cupcake and Strawberry Cheesecake are delicious. How do you choose? you sure don’t make this simple, do you?
Gee, my coffee didn’t even make it to the second round. Hope I do better on my bball brackets.
Some of the choices are so easy for me while other are really difficult. I think we all need samples of every flavor so we can make a more informed choice. What does the turkey hill team think of this option? How about a sampling type product with different comparents for each ice cream and new one after each round. Too expensive I’m sure but a girl can dream can’t she.
voted
Yes, I must agree with what someone said earlier. When putting Black Raspberry up against Orange Swirl, this was diffently a very tough choice. Was this a fair choice? Only the tourament voters will tell. And I cannot find Orange Swirl now in the grocery store, so go figure. Well we will all see next week as we make our choices again! Until then, Happy Ice Cream dreams!
Some really great flavors here! Glad to see a lot of them are not just the same old ones !
Can’t wait to try York peppermint patty
Turkey Hill Sweet 16 time is here
Some of the favorites are are out I fear….
My most revered flavor is Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup
I am definitely sure that it will make the cut!!!
Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup #1
There are so many yummy flavors! I want to try them all!
Oh man, I can’t believe Turkey Hill’s Cookies and Cream lost! That is one of the best flavors ever!

Okay this is tough vote. I am from Pen. So I know HOW good TasteKake Cupcake are. But can not get them where I live and I have never seen Turkeyhills at out stores. But I can get Turkey hills Chocolate Peanut Butter where I live and it has always been my favorite Icecream. I would LOVE to try the tastekake As I think that would become my family’s favorite. Because we have eaten cake and icecream together for years but think I am going to have to vote for Chocolate Peanutbutter because I KNOW thatis good.
I did it voted for Chocolate Peanutbutter. Although I did want to vote for the Tastkake but I just have never tried it wish I could get it here.
