WOULD YOU EAT IT: SQUID INK ICE CREAM

No, the soft serve treat above isn’t black licorice flavor or even a really dark chocolate. It’s a far east favorite called squid ink ice cream and it gets its dark hue from, well, squid ink!

Apparently, squid ink is used in all sorts of Asian  and European dishes (mainly pasta and pasta sauces). It doesn’t always come from a squid, either, but is often extracted from the squid’s cousin, the cute and cuddly cuttlefish. We couldn’t find much information on the actual taste of squid ink, but the descriptions we did come across described it as either sweet, salty, metallic or even fishy. Either way, it creates a very unusual looking dish and we’re dying to know… WOULD YOU EAT IT?

Not In This Lifetime – It Is Totally Repulsive

  3. Bob Kessler Jr says:

I would try one lick or a small spoonful. I don’t think I could eat what is in the picture. As with anything else you acquire a taste. If my one lick or spoonful turns out to be satisfying I may go for the whole cone -but with a smaller amount than pictured.

  4. Sheila says:

    NEVER, EVER, EVER!!

  5. Carol Triano says:

When I was in Italy a few years ago (and believe me, I ate A LOT of gelato while there! Yum!), a friend I was with ate pasta with squid ink sauce. I had never heard of it before, and it was scary looking enough to make me never want to try it… it turned her mouth an intense black! I don’t remember what she said it tasted like. But no, I wouldn’t eat it. Blech!

  8. jack says:

WOULD SQUID INK ICE CREAM BE KOSHER?

  9. Sarah says:

Well, it looks tasty but I think I would only try one lick. Of course, I would need some great TH flavor standing by to remove the squid ink taste from my tongue it it was bad.

  10. Tricia Ostermann says:

I’m usually pretty open minded when it comes to ice cream, but I’ll have to pass on this one. Squid and I don’t mix, so squid ink and ice cream don’t mix for me either.

  11. Maureen B says:

I think I’ll pass on this one. Squid ink ice cream just sounds horrible. Give me TH Chocolate Marshmallow any day!

It would have to be a very hot day and this my only choice for me to try it.

  24. Christine McKnight says:

I say leave squid ink to the squids.

  25. Norma says:

I’d give it a quick lick out of curiosity, though it really doesn’t appeal to me. Even the color is a bit off putting. However, salty and sweet combine well, so tasting it is the way to go.

  26. CHRISTINE says:

Yuck! That sounds horrible. I will stick to my favorites. This one is really not tempting at all.

  27. Linda Leffler says:

Count me out on this flavor. I don’t eat anykind of fish and so I would never have this flavor. Linda

The color isn’t bad, but I’ll pass on this one.

  30. karen says:

i would try it as long it is either LOW FAt OR FAT FREE AS FAR AS THE BASE n which the flavor and other ingredants come in? ( the milk part made from the milk)………….i never made ice cream. but, after tasting/trying the ice cream…. well, that is to be detemined. bring it on!

  45. Pat says:

    I think Not! :)

  46. Chris says:

    Just ruined my appetite!

  47. gianna says:

No thanks! I love ice cream but that has no appeal for me.

It would look lovely as dark chocolate, but knowing it is fishy is a total turn off. Not on MY menu!

My mother’s famous words. Now I even like Broccoli

  57. Anonymous says:

My tastebuds are used to flavorful fruit, chocolate or vanilla ice creams. Squid ink doesn’t really scream “yummy” on a hot day.
    Whats next grass and mud?

  58. Stefanie says:

I love the color but don’t think I would love this flavor.

  59. Susan Kline says:

I guess I’d be willing to try it, but it doesn’t really sound appetizing.

  60. Jean Marie says:

    Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!!!!!!!!

  61. Tom says:

If you are seriously considering your comment in the caption of “black licorice flavor”. Then I believe a lot of us loyal TH customers would even consider buying it and taking home for the rest of the family. Or how about milk chocolate licorice flavor? There is a delicious thought!

  62. Heidi says:

I never dreamed that somewhere in the world there would be an ice cream flavor that would actually turn my stomach, but here it is!

  71. Rita says:

I don’t know how good that squid ink would taste and I’m a ice cream lover indeed but I may have to past on it, it looks good though

  72. Paul says:

This is nuts! In Japan, they have fish flavored, octopus flavored, ox tongue flavored ice cream and all these other weird ice cream, and yes, squid ink ice cream. Apparently, people do eat them if it has been coded into their culture. This be a tough sell in the United States when the much of the public don’t even eat fish or chicken with a head on it. How long did it take soccer to become just a little more popular in the U.S.? I’ll stick to my Turkey Hill Tin Roof Sundae;yum. No ink for me. Harvest it for printers instead.

  73. JUDY says:

sure I love seafood and a new exciting thing like this would be fun to try.

  74. Karen Vadnais says:

This looks okay but it sounds totally disgusting, I think squid is best left to Red Lobster.

  75. TeeCee says:

Squid ink is used in Sicilian and other southern Italian pasta making to create special dishes. Would I eat this kind of ice cream? NO -first, because it doesn’t appeal to me; second, because I am allergic to shellfish, and third, the picture mocks what would be my PREFERRED flavor: Dark Chocolate.

  76. Kathy L says:

I can’t even imagine how bad this would taste!! I love Turkey Hill, but sure wouldn’t try this one!

  77. Sarah says:

Eww. I’m sure it’d taste fishy which ruins the whole ice cream experience. Given the few things I know about Asian culture, this is right up their alley–a treat especially for the kiddies. They can have mine. Change it to dark chocoloate and you’ve got a winner.

  78. Jack says:

If I tried this, I would look to Turkey Hill for some “Squid Pro Quo” in the form of coupons for some more savory ice cream.

  79. Bess says:

Not on your life would I try ‘squid inky’ flavor ice cream. You’re only knitting with one needle on this one!!!!

  80. carrie says:

The thought of it gives me the hee bee jee bees!! Who would of thunk it??? I try to eat healthy but this is just beyond what I can comprehend!!

If Turkey Hill made squid ink ice cream I’m sure somehow you would make it taste fantastic –like all of your other flavors. And what would you call it? Something like “Squid-night Delight”

  83. Sharon says:

No thank you!!! Fish and Ice Cream should always be kept separate!

  84. mary frey says:

    NO, THANK YOU

  85. mary frey says:

    NOT MY CUP OF TEA

i fish for flounder with squid. i would never try it

  87. ARLENE says:

send me a sample and I would try it. Never know. ever heard of great nut ice cream or sour sop ice cream, well their not bad.

  88. Patricia says:

NO WAY. I’ll take Mint Chocolate Chip & Butter Pecan along w/ Vanilla

  89. No, NO, and NO again. Only if Turkey Hill makes it. Then I would know that it will be tasty.

  90. Theresa Skalit says:

I’d give the squid ink ice cream a try once or twice. I think unusual flavors require an acquired taste, just like the green tea ice cream. At first attempt, I found it repulsive, at the second attempt, not so bad and by the third try its unique taste was rather good.

  91. Tricia says:

That sounds really gross and I would never buy it on my own. If it were free I would try it as would my kids but…. taste says a whole lot for future purchases.

  92. judy norbutt says:

I ate Lobster Ice Cream in Maine and Kielbsa Ice Cream in Pittsburgh. Oddly enough, Squid Ink Ice Cream is next on my list of Unique Flavors to try. Bring it on !

  93. Mrs K says:

It Does look like Dark Chocolate. As long as I knew that I was trying Squid instead of Dark Chocolate, I’d be up for Trying it. I like to know what I’m eating; I’m disappointed when I bite into a cookie expecting chocolate chips only to find raisins. :0

  94. Randall Gabrielan says:

Sure, at least once, especially if given to me. Much of the fun would be seeing the expressions on those told that one has eaten it.

  95. ellen says:

I would try it! Just like the Judy Norbutt, I’ve also tried lobster ice cream in Maine. This would go well with savory dishes.

  96. Lauren says:

Nope, not for me. I think that this is one of those things that most people wouldn’t like unless they’ve grown up with it!

  97. Rokujo says:

Mhm! Delicious looking! The Japanese always manage to make food look appetizing and perhaps even be appetizing- shiso pepsi anyone? I had lobster ice cream once, and didn’t taste bad at all, so I would give this a try. I would give anything a try, as a matter of fact, provided that I’m not dead beforehand.

  98. Theo says:

Hmm… maybe… I’m the type of guy who likes appetite-ruining foods and drinks like Strawberry Milk. I’m so awesome, I might actually try this.

  99. Jill Sophia says:

¿Por que no? I’ve had the famous Cuban dish “calamares en su tinta” (squid in their own ink) and it was yummy. Besides, I’m always tempted by unusual ice cream flavors — green tea, red bean, black sesame, and ginger are among my favs — so why not squid ink? Tentaculicious!

  100. Archer says:

    I’d give it a try

  101. Josephine says:

Sure but just a little to see if i like it. :)

  102. katherine says:

I would try just about anythingwhen it comes to ice cream at least once, I don’t think I could eat a large cone like this but I’d at least give it a try.

  103. Amaya says:

    I’m gonna try it >.:O

  104. JJ says:

Wow! How creative! Great for Helloween party.

This ice cream difinitely for open-minded people!

  105. Peter says:

Squid ink works wonderfully in savory dishes like pasta, rice or even stews. It has a nutty flavor that makes a dish taste richer. How it’s going to work with soft serve, I do not know. But then again, I tried unusual ice cream flavors like olive oil or black sesame and they turned out to be great. I will definitely give this a go!

  106. Anon says:

    Pussies? I’d totally try it.

  107. Tiger Muffin says:

Ya, I’d try it. I like trying new things. But even if I did like it, I probably wouldn’t eat as much as is shown.
