Today’s story comes to us from Joanna D. of Hazlet, NJ. In this entry, Joanna describes the great lengths she go to in order to satisfy her grandchildren’s ice cream cravings.
I am a 64 year old grandmother who has been baby sitting grandchildren for 17 years. They were raised on Turkey Hill ice cream from when they were little and each one has their own flavor that they like. I always have my freezer stocked with, no lie, at least 12 different flavors. When anyone comes to my house, they can’t believe it.
On Sunday when everyone gets together I have a special four section bowl where I place all the flavors I have. I put them in large scoops and we all get to try the different flavors. When I do that for company, it gets them to sample flavors that they never had and they think that is great. I must go through my ice cream in a matter of two weeks time. No matter how much we eat, there is always room for Turkey Hill Ice Cream in my home!

If you’ve got a technical question about the ice cream making process or some other inquiry about the nuances of America’s favorite treat, chances are Ernie has the answer. He might not be able to answer all questions, but he’ll try his best and some may be featured on the Ice Cream Journal.
Hi Grandma
Even though you and I are the same age I am willing to have you adopt me. Just so you will be prepared, my favorite is Turkey Hill Butter Pecan. Draw up the papers!
I can understand how Joanna feels. I have 3 grown grandchildren and 5 young great-grandchildren. I always have 8 or 10 containers of Turkey Hill. I buy pints of Vanilla Moose Tracks for myself and hide it in the back. But my 26 year old grandson usually finds it. 2 years ago I gave everyone, all 13, Coupons for free Turkey Hill,a bowl, spoon and assorted toppings. It was the best and easiest gift I ever gave. Everyone received the same thing in a gift bag.
I am not a grandmom but everyone in my family loves Turkey Hill icecream TOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Too bad we have to decide on 1 or at the most 2 flavors on a shopping trip. That is because I ONLY have a small freezer above the frig no other larger freezer is in the house or I would keeep more flavors in.
Judi, your comment is pretty much word-for-word as my sentiments– I need to be adopted by this lady!
Joanna can I stop by next Sunday? I’ll bring spoons and sprinkles!
My grandkids will eat ice cream for breakfast if I’d let them. My house only offers an assortment of 4, they would be in heaven with 12!
I love your ice cream!
Wow, I am a grandma with 5 grandchildren and I thought I was doing good to offer them 4 different flavors of Turkey Hill! That is just an amazing story! I guess if my freezer was bigger, though, I would have a few more. I am forever running out of TH ice cream around the house, and I go into withdrawal when I know there isn’t any left in the freezer. Way to go, Joanna, you are the best!
i will be over joanna my grandchildren are in pa and nj so i cant help then out with ice crean
hi! grandma
when can i come over?
Today I read where you save money by keeping your freezer full, but not packed. I guess that is what Joanna is doing and I think it’s a great idea. I only wish my kids were closer so we could share more ice cream.
If I had that much ice cream in the house, I wouldn’t eat anything else.
I like the idea of your four section bowl to sample the different flavors of Turkey Hill IceCream. Your Grandchildren are very “Lucky” to have a thoughtful sweet Grandma like you. “Sweets to the Sweet”!
We grandma no matter what age are always willing to please those special little ones in our lives with the wonderful flavor of TH ice cream. Yes, even our granddaughter some times will say grandma I am hungry can I have ice cream for my breakfast, sure and I will too.Turkey Hill ice cream is good no matter what the time is or day.
You are one terrific grandma!!!!
sure you all can come over we can have an icecream feast lol lol and as far as the adoption whats one more just another 1/2 gallon of icecream lol lol
Everyone must be thinking the same thing. I was going to write, ” Hi Grandma. I’ll be over in a little while”. I am not too far from Grandma, I’m in PA., but “Have Grandma, will travel” for Turkey Hill Ice Cream. Add Party Cake and Chocolate Marshmallow.
Love You Grandma! (She’s not my real Grandma, but could be)
Wow Joanna, your grandchildren are lucky to have you as their grandmother.
Joanna’s freezer makes it the perfect stopping place on route to the Jersey shore. See you soon!
nice story–I too, have more than that many in my freezer, I am lucky –I dring Ensure/ice cream milkshakes as my total source of nutrition—can have as much as I want–thank you
If there was a world’s record Joanna D might hold it for the most Turkey Hill containers in your freezer. She never said how many grandchildren but based on 17 years of feeding them Turkey Hill you would have to guess several. I wouldn’t be surprised if she grew up with Turkey Hill, passed it on to her children, and is now passing it on to her children’s children.
That’s the kind of things that make Grandmas special! The things that create wonderful memories!
Wow! I was surprised because I feel like my family has a lot of choice if I have three kinds at a time. I could possibly fit that much ice cream in if I got rid of all the frozen veggies…
Joanna,
You ROCK as a grandmom (and a mom too Im sure!)
The little extras that you do for your family will always be remembered!!! Are you looking to adopt?
What an awesome Grandma! I wish I could keep that many flavors around for my grandkids! I can only offer three or four at a time. They all love the TH Ice Cream!
How far from Winchester, Va. to Hazlet, N.J.? If Joanna is willing to adopt a 62 yr. old, I’m moving.
What a great idea! 12 different flavors for your grandchildren and guests is more than I can do. I have only went as far as buying 4 flavors of delicious Turkey Hill Ice Cream including frozen yogurt.
Joanna, you sound like a gem. Your grandchildren will have some wonderful memories to remember and then they can continue the tradition of serving Turkey Hill Ice Cream to their kids.
When we were little we mostly had to finish one before we could start another…that went for cereal, too. Cool grandmom!
I too am a grandma (Nana to be exact) and my little 4 1/2 year old granddaughter loves ice cream and she also loves it when she finds me on the Turkey Hill site so that she can play “Find Bo”. If I am not on that site, she does everything she can to get me to go there.
Wow, I would never have room in my freezer for more than 3 flavors. She must have a deep freeze to satisfy all those cravings.
I must add that I was glad to see Christopher Kimball and one of the Cook’s Country chefs having TH vanilla with their freshly baked peach cobbler on last Friday’s show. It sure made my mouth water and I can’t wait for our freestone peaches to arrive at the farmer’s market so I can duplicate the recipe.
Great story!! I would like to be your granddaughter!!
She certainly is a good grandma. Makes the rest of us look bad though. LOL
I have at least 12 containers of ice cream in my freezer at all times as well…although I don’t have grandchildren or children!
Wow! I want a Grandma like that!
What a great dinner/party dessert idea! Thanks.
I sent the link of this article to my Grandma! She always seems to have ice cream at her house…HOWEVER it is the same 2 ice cream containers that have been there for way too many months to count. I check each carton each time I am there and the ice cream is freezer burned, melted and re-frozen, and hard as rock! And everytime I go I open the freezer hoping for more, but am disappointed. I hope she can take the nice hint and get a smile when she reads this article.
What a great Grandma you are. I don’t have any grandchildren, but I do spoil the neighborhood kids with TH ice cream cones. Just yesterday my neighbors grandchild was visiting from New Jersey, she made a fast clip over to my house for ice cream. I always give her extra dips on her cone, since I don’t see her often. Linda
Hi turkey hill fans, Yes I am a grandmom, also I have to have different kind in my freeze too. I have grandchildren and they have their flavor. I keep vanilla, strawberry, in my freeze all the time, they love to pick differetn kind when we go to the store. They never pick the same flavor.
will you be my grandma too????
Why grandma, what a great big heart u have!!
Even though my family doesn’t drink soda, when I was a kid my mom used to keep some in the fridge for my friends that came over to play. That is nothing compared to stocking 12 different ice cream flavors at once, though! Wow!
WOW, Joanna I am a grandma also but my freezer isn’t big enough for 12 only 6-8 unless I am having my ice cream party, then I clean out the freezer for that day and get 8-10 gallons (or whatever the amount is now in the containers). Each grandchild gets the flavor that they request and can sample all the other flavors as well. I try to limit my party to just the grandchildren but the word is spreading and the group gets larger every year. I do it for the end of the school year to celebrate their accomplishments. I love Rebecca’s idea of giving ice cream certificates and spoons & dishes for a gift for Christmas. That’s what I’m doing this year.
Joanna, I work with your daughter in Law Denise, she always telling me you have a stock of Turkey Hill icecream with all flavors in your fridge!!! Wow when is the next cookout Im there! I love butter peacan
Hi Grandma! I love the pic of your freezer. What a sweet thing (pun intended) for you to do for your family. Enjoy!
Your grandkids are going to have some fabulous memories to tell their kids & grandchildren! And you must have some gigantic freezer…
Grandma’s are the best!
I am, grandmother,too. just had a birthday sunday, my son walked in with ice cream for the party, but not turkey hill; I sent back to store for turkey hill ice cream, just training him to buy the best;
Is that her freezer or the grocery store display?
Joanna, my husband is jealous and wants to know if you would adopt him.
You are his new hero.
Sincerely,
wife of an ice cream-a-holic
Thanks to all of you for your replies, yes that is my freezer not a store display. And to all the Grandma’s out there weather you have one or two or more Turkey Hill Ice Cream the gramd your grand kids will always be happy as long as it’s Turkey Hill.
Move over, grandkids! I’m coming over!! Sounds (and looks) amazing!!!! Definitely best grandma ever!
What an awsome Grandma! I would never be able to remember which flavor of ice cream everyone likes. I do know that Turkey Hill is the favorite brand of everyonewho comes to my house!
Hi Joann,
You are undoubtedly a wonderful grandmother and as many people could now see a great hostess. Everything from soup to nuts; of course including a variety of Turkey Hill flavors that are ultimate! Looking forward to another taste-test! Congratulations Cousin!
Love,
Teresa
